View Full Version : The Temple of the Ocean King Really, REALLY Hurts. :(

I thought they'd never make something more frustrating than a few of the temples in Majora's Mask where you had to do a whole level over again and worry about the time limit. I was SO wrong.
Let me put it this way... I may not be able to finish PH because this level is too hard and instills a sense of futility. You have to do it over again from the start if you make a mistake. It feels like I get no credit for solving any of the puzzles, and that's just maddening.
This temple takes everything that stresses me out, and throws it all in my face at once. Time limits and sneaking areas are my least favorite things to encounter in video games. Here, they not only have the audacity to combine them, but they give you normal dungeon puzzles to worry about as well. Worst of all, none of your progress is saved, and you have to go redo what you've already done, possibly screwing that up as well.
On my first real visit to this dungeon after the Temple of Fire, it already had me stressed out. It took me two days to get past the third floor, and then I died on the fourth. When I went back in and had to do it all over again... I was so angry I couldn't see straight. I struggled on the second floor again, and couldn't make it past the third floor. I ended up having my mom do it. I was just relieved that it was over, and I hoped I would never have to see this place again.
Cut to the point after I beat the Temple of Wind. I find out that I not only have to go there AGAIN, and start from the beginning AGAIN, but I've got to redo everything I did last time and MORE, and STILL start over at the beginning of the part I did the first time if I make a mistake after that point.
>:(
I... I... just can't believe it. It's not fair. I get no credit whatsoever. Over and over again. With the stressful time limits. Do the same stuff, get more piled on, and do ALL of that over again for just ONE mistake? I haven't even started yet and I'm already losing it.
This feels more like one of those horrible old arcade games I could never get past level 3 on than a Zelda game.
They've really destroyed the main reason I prefer Zelda games over platformers like Mario. I prefer it because I can take damage rather than dealing with "poof-die" and complete start over of the level upon failure. You could just go back to the puzzle you failed at last time. Now I have to deal with it here, too. Why?!

I know how you feel, Before i completed phantom hourglass a few weeks ago that temple reeeally pulled my strings. You'll eventually be able to complete it, it just takes time and effort. I find it helps if i turn off my DS and come back to it later on, when i've calmed down and ready to make yet another attempt.
You'll be pleased to know thats in Spirit Tracks there is no time limit in the spirit tower! :D

But the last part of the Spirit Tower is extremely annoying. I am so glad I got it off my chest.

I hated the last part of the Spirit Tower, the Ocean King temple can be really annoying but you can do it it just takes time.

Keep trekking, young warrior. Think of the satisfaction you will feel once you finally put that wretched temple in its place.
You'll get through it eventually! That's what I did. I got so frustrated with that temple that I just quit playing for a while. I came back to it a month or so later and tried again and eventually beat it. There's nothing more satisfying than beating The Temple of the Ocean King... again. Good luck!

The Temple of the Ocean King's main reason for frustration was that you had to go through it entirely every time you went there, imo.

It seems hard, but first of all after you get halfway through it, you can just take the yellow warp point to get halfway down it. Also, you'll notice that they create shortcuts on earlier floors if you have later items. One of the big ones is using the Grappling Hook in the first room with Force Gems. You can just launch yourself right up and skip the whole floor pretty much. It is annoying, but I go through it a lot now for ship parts. Remember, there are a couple of Treasure Maps in the game that offer one minute to the Phantom Hourglass if you find them. ;)

AMEN.
That awful temple (and having to return to it!) nearly /ruined/ PH for me.
I was never so fustrated in my life. I like to take my time when doing temples and such in Zelda,
so it's no suprise I had such a problem with it. The same with MM. I hate having a time limit...

It is more frustrating with the time limit but once you finished it and play it again you will see it's much more easier.

I don't get people's problems with it. Towards the end it got hard(that's what she said) but you only had to redo the hardest parts once.

You could say that. While I was playing PH (I've completed the game.) I spent my spare time looking for sands of hours. If I couldn't find any, I'd just really be careful with the time, phantoms, etc.

You'll get it eventually. My fastest time for the first half is 34 seconds, and it only took me two tries to get it that way. (I was mad at the temple because I died on the last floor, so I said "You will rue the day you killed me!" and I won the next time though.) So you should get it soon.

I'm seriously the only person in the world who enjoyed (and still does) the TotOK? Then again, I'm the only American who likes Tingle... And the only theorist who doesn't believe there's a definite timeline/ don't want there to be one... God, I'm effed up...

Well the Temple of the Ocean King was one of the only hard parts in PH but I did hate the fact how you would have to repeat each level again. There sould've been some kind of portal in the room when you get a sea chart, but the portal sould also be able to return you to that room
When I did a 3 heart challenge in ST, I was on the floor where you had to fight a lot of monsters. Even though I had a Wrecker Phantom, I got killed by Geozard Cheifs. I had to start all over from the lobby. If you die in at the TotOk, you might have to start from the alter. What if you're in the 4th seachart room before you fight Bellum, a phantom sees you and you accidently run into the fire with about 1 or 1/2 hearts left? Then that would make anyone angry.
I'm seriously the only person in the world who enjoyed (and still does) the TotOK?
Not nessassarily
Then again, I'm the only American who likes Tingle...
Yeah. The only one.

Maybe. Why don't you want timeline?

That doesn't make any sense. If you don't theorize about the timline, what else is there to theorize.

A little off topic, but I think i'll add this in;

How locations came to be, characters' lives and how they ended up doing stuff...plot details...etc.

I'm sorry to say I don't know how you feel. I suppose on reflection it has the potential to be a VERY irritating dungeon, but I don't really remember getting that fustrated about it. The time-stealing wizrobes, or whatever they were were quite annoying at first though, but I thought it was a nice combination of gameplay styles, though it did become occasionally tedious... Then again, I was ill at the time I played it, and I do love stealth sections anyway~ XD
Hahah, but your description of futility reminds me more of Zelda II's Death Valley. Talk about no recognition: you've got that far but nope, 3 chances and you die, whether you miss a jump and land in a insta-kill lava pit or whatever, and then you go all the way back to North Castle. Enjoy your 10 minute, forced-ambush filled hike to get back there only to die in the same spot and do it all again *fake smile*
Believe me, for me PH feels like a virtual cakewalk after that XD

I find the Temple of the Ocean King annoying at first, but then I found it as a new challenge.
Sure you had to repeat from the top Level, but it was the point of the shortness of PH. PH was meant to be easy and short from the start. The creators made it that way so people can play Zelda more, to attract the young people.
Anywho, the Temple was fun to go through, I collected the spoils from those monsters, and it's fun to kill them after they have killed you SO many times before you had the Phantom Sword. It was a pain to loose time and trying to get to the end without getting killed or hit. But I had fun, especially after I had made to the bottom of the Temple with a perfect time of 25:00.

The first time I played it it was mostly easy but had some hard points but they should have made the warp phantom floors harrder :(

Well to me i thought PH Ocean temple easy, sure it may have stumped me a few times but i kinda did everything else before i did the main story line and all but i had to, also when i got the two scrolls for the sword spin attack it made the first floor easy to go through with out wasting time. And the main part i hated most was the ship guiding the damn 4 girls and if a bug appeared i had to start over, i got pissed at that the most. And it is really easy if u have the Phantom sword.
In ST it was quite easy to, but at first when i had to fight that train thing i got really fustrated cuz i was doing it wrong. But i got over it. But i aim to et everything befroe i finsih up the game.

Errrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! I FRUCKiN HATE HOW YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO StaRT AT THE BEGINNING!!!
Personally, I hated the TotOK. One thing I really enjoyed after getting the Phantom Sword *SPOILER!*
Was being able to kill the phatoms by hitting them in the back. I was like "I have had my revenge on you, Phantom! You shall never hurt me again until I leave and come back, and in that time you will have regenerated and I'll have to kill you again."

I know what you mean I am not terrible at time and stealth but the fact the phantoms take my time away was maddening to me. later on when you can kill these freaking things I went insane with joy and love... That was until I got to the last floor. I had 1 mi 24 secs left and I had to kill NINE PHANTOMS I almost cried.

as some people have already said, there is a yellow warpy thingy once you get to about the seventh floor or wherever it is after the red door when you draw the triforce on it and go in and talk to the skeleton. also when you get to the last room there is another warp that is made by the three fairies which you can use to go from the first floor(where you found the phantom hourglass) to the last floor. and there is no "time limit" while fighting bellum. yay :)

there is a red pot you can throw into the middle of the room in front of the big gold chest and hide in there while killing the phantoms, it works like... something that works well

Okay, new update...
I finally got the Northeastern sea chart!
I've been watching videos of how to beat this temple ever since I first posted the thread. I've had to ruminate over the problem for several months, with the aid of every walkthrough known to the Internet. But I finally did it!
The attempt before this final one, I got to B13, got two Triforce pieces on the pedestal... and ran out of time before getting the third one there. I started running low on health, and managed to kill one of those monsters that gives you 30 more seconds, which would have been enough... but I ran out of health RIGHT after killing it, and died with an extra 30 seconds within my reach. :(
On the final attempt... something finally clicked. I perceived all the inefficiency in the video walkthrough I had been trying to follow, as well as everything required to get through each floor, and used a slightly different tactic. I busted through the first floors before the pillar maze and the Triforce room using about 2 minutes of time. I managed to reach the Triforce room with 7:00 minutes left, and finished the entire puzzle, left with the map, and had 5:40 minutes to spare!
It's like it all came at once. Months and months of failures... and then finally, it clicks.
Now I won't have to give up on this game! I'm so relieved.
Thanks for all your help. Much of it was useful, and got me through on several occasions.

thats one of the things that i think ST fixed...this time you only tackled 3-5 levels at a time...not 20...i was so relived when i found out that you didnt have to do it all over again in ST

I thought it was a fun, sort-of-challenging "Growing Dungeon" as you might call it. Oh, and by the way, I'm American, and I <3 tingle! But, that's also coming from a guy who can play OoT (well) at 13:00 at night. Wait a second...
