View Full Version : First Zelda Released in Your Lifetime?

Browsing profiles on this forum, it occurred to me that most members were not even alive when the first few Zelda games were released and that probably has a lot to do with how different members feel about the games.
LoZ was released in Japan in Feb. 1986 and I was born in Nov. 1986. The game made it to the states in 1987. I was a baby when LoZ was released, but I remember playing it on the NES when I was a little kid.
The question is what was the first Zelda game realeased in your lifetime?
For reference the release years are as follows (you may have to google the exact dates to see if a game was before your birthday, but this should help narrow it down)
LoZ = 1986, AoL=1987, ALttP = 1991, LA= 1993, OoT=1998, MM=2000, OoA & OoS = 2001, FS & WW = 2002, FSA & MC = 2004, (doubt anyone is younger than 5 but, TP = 2006, PH = 2007, ST = 2009, and Unknown Wii game = 2010)
I especially want to hear from other oldies who were born before ANY Zelda's were released.

*Raises hand.*
The first Legend of Zelda relased in my lifetime was the original "Legend of Zelda." I actually remember when the NES was a shiny new thing. I was about 7 years old at the time, but didn't actually get my NES or LoZ until I was around 10.
I grew up on the Legend of Zelda, Adventure of Link to a degree, and Super Mario Bros... and Super Mario 3... (kind of skipped getting 2). What other games did I have? Oh, yeah, I got something called "Dragon Spirit" for getting good grades... a Jurrassic Park game for one of my birthdays...
And I had a frickin' Game Genie. Remember those? I liked making Mario walk on the sky in Super Mario Bros. 3 with that.
I digress.
Yes, my first Zelda was LoZ, and I'm an old fart.

A Link to the Past was the first out after I was born.
I never played it until about 10 years after its release though.

I definitely remember game genie. Don't remember what you could use it for on LoZ though

I grew up on Legend of Zelda and Adventure of Link, therefore The Legend of Zelda (Hyrule Fantasy to be exact) was the first in my life time.

I don't think Game Genie had any uses for the Zelda titles. I just remember I could do loads of crap in the Super Mario Bros. games with it. I don't think it had any Zelda uses, or at least, I don't recall using it for Zelda, myself.

Original The Legend of Zelda was first Zelda title in my lifetime and it was also first Zelda title I got to play, but I really didn't catch Zelda fandom until A Link to the Past and finally gave my soul with Ocarina of Time. I loved Game Genie .. I remember using that thing with Megaman and Black Manta ninja game. I miss times before internet walkthroughs, secret guides and such. You really feld special when you knew some secret your friends didn't.
Adventure of Link was the first one to be released after I was born.... well, over here anyway. It was already long out in Japan.
It was also my first Zelda game, so it's fitting. :)

Ocarina of Time; it was released when I was two. I haven't played it yet, but I would really love to… I hear it's one of the best Zelda titles out there.

A Link to the Past was released when I was two years old, and, two years after that, it was the first game I ever played.
18 years after it's release, I finally got the SNES version of it

Well I was born in September of 1995 so the first Zelda released in my lifetime is Ocarina of Time. Oddly enough it's also my favorite Zelda and I first played it two years ago.

Well. Let me see. The first Zelda game that was released in my lifetime would be Ocarina of Time. As I was born not to many years before it. I never got to play it though, until I purchased it on the Wii Shop Channel, but then I got it again for my N64 about a year ago. But I didn't actually play a Zelda game till about a year after Wind Waker was released, when I played that.

It really is. I'm one of the oldies who started out with 2D Zelda's, but I enjoy replaying OoT more than any other title and have probably beat it more times than any other Zelda game except maybe the original LoZ.

The first Zelda for me is Link's Awakening, was released when I was only 1 year old. :P And I haven't had the chance to play it yet.
First Zelda I played was OOT, when I was 6, altough it isn't my favorite, I truly enjoyed that game. It's the one that got me hooked to the series. After, I got MM when it came out, and bougt many other Zelda after that. :)

Wow, this is a really cool thread idea!
Uhh... for me I guess it's actually OoT, since I was born just after LA was released. Though initially I wouldn't have thought that, as I never got to play OoT until I was 6, my early childhood consisted of LttP and LA : DDD
Feh, I feel like a little kid compared to some of you lucky people who were alive when the first one came out lol.
Game Genies' ftw. And the Super GameBoy cartridge :3

Wow, what a gap between 1993 and 1998! I guess OOT was the first game released after I was born... I was only 3 when it got released and 5 when I started playing it!

I was born only two years before Ocarina of Time. I didn't play a Zelda game until I was 7, which was just a little bit of the original A Link to the Past. I got into the series when I was 8 with The Wind Waker and the Collector's Edition soon after.
Strangely enough, I grew up in the more modern era of gaming when I prefer classic games from the Golden Age of gaming.

OoT was the first game released in my lifetime I was 1 and I never actually seen Legend of Zelda since my friend played Wind Waker and I don't remember hearing the name until some other friends were talking about a hat that made you smaller or something like that (MC). and Then I didn't even buy a Zelda game until TPs release so I'm still really new to Zelda.
Um. Mine would have to be Link's Awakening, which came out about two months after I was born. I feel so young compared to the rest of this thread. :\

I was born in 1989 so...A Link to the Past in 1992 would be the first since I was born.
I have a mint condition SNES cartridge for it, which I bought shortly before the power supply for my SNES died. v.v I haven't found time to look for a new one, yet.
I was two when ALTTP came out, but the first game i played was OOT in.. 2002.

When you consider the fact that there was a huge gap between LA and OoT, I guess it isn't surprising that many people would answer OoT. I was a born a year after LA, and a good four years before OoT.

Mine was OoT. I was't even a month old. My uncle gave his N64 with all of his games and one of them was OoT. So it was the first Zelda game I've played.

Old as I am my first experience (and release) was with the first game back in the 80´s, on the wonderful NES I also had the great pleasure of experiencing Zelda II. Then it took some years, and the next title I experienced was ALttP, but not the SNES version, I played it on my GBA SP just a couple of years ago. And since that I´ve played all of the official games except FS.

Well, since I was born in '94, I was born a year after Link's Awakening was released, and quite a few years before Ocarina of Time was released. Odd as to how the first Zelda released in my lifetime was my first Zelda...of which I played it first on a N64 I bought from a friend...in 2007.
I guess with that said, I should try out Link's Awakening, considering it came out a little bit before I was born, and I also have no idea how awesome it is.

The First Zelda that was released in my life time was A Link to the Past way back in 1994. I didn't get to play it much though, until 2003 when the GBA version was released and I beat it again and again and again. The first real Zelda I played though was LOZ which was pretty much a thing of the past when I played it back in 1997.

I was born in 1988, so ALttP was released when I was 3. I got an SNES when I was 5, but I overlooked this title for several years. So the first Zelda game I ever played was OoT, and I got ALttP when I was looking for a new SNES game after I realized I just couldn't take any more of the N64's choppy 3D.
I was born 8 months before the North American release of AoL, but that may not count since the Japanese release was a year earlier.
Link's awakening.
Possibly one of the only Zelda games I ahve never played.
I think it's a sign.

I was born a few days before Link's Awakening was released. But the first Zelda game that i played, meet and enjoyed was Ocarina of Time. I also played Mario kart 64, Starfox 64 and the original Smash Brothers. That's all i can remember at the time, Since education was a must in those years so i barely played.
But during summer vacation is where i go nuts. I play non-stop and if i get stuck i play until i beat the obstacle. Ahh those were the days..

I was around 10 or 11 whenever the first Legend of Zelda was released. The kid who lived across the street from me (he was 8) got it before I did, so I got to play it a little over there before my parents got it for me. It had been out maybe a month at the most whenever I got it.
Unfortunately, despite being 10 years older than the Zelda franchise, I've only played through 4 of them (LoZ, AoL, OoT, and MM).

The first game released in my lifetime was OoT, although I never actually played or had even heard of it until a couple years ago. Despite my age though, I was lucky enough for aLttP to be my very first Zelda game (granted it was the GBA remake...).

Link's Awakening came out a year and four months after I was born. =)
I grew up playing the NES games for a long time, though, since we didn't have an SNES or a Gameboy and got the N64 a year or two after it was released.

For me, it was OoT, and I played once at my cousin's house, but I didn't like it. Then my aunt got Majora's Mask, and I played that for an hour, but I didn't like it much either (though it would eventually be one of my favourites...). Then Wind Waker came out, my brother bought it, and he played it all day and night, with me just sitting there watching him. That was the first Zelda game I really enjoyed playing.

I wasn't a long time Zelda fan, because I was only about 2 years old when OoT was released. Of course I was too young back then, and I had no idea what Zelda is. But when I was 8 or 9, I played Alttp and it sucked me into the franchise. I got the SNES version of the game. So, OoT was the first game in my lifetime, but it's not the first game I played.

Link's Awakening. I was born four months before the Japanese release and six months before the North American. I didn't start playing Zelda until the N64 was out and OoT was released.
Same as PJDEP, Link's Awakening was the first Zelda to be released in my lifetime.
And, same again I didn't start playing them until the N64 versions were made. The earlier games just didn't really appeal to me back then, how wrong I was!

The first Zelda to be released in Japan in my lifetime was aLttP (AoL came out in Japan half a year before I was born), for US release dates it was the original LoZ (I wasn't even a month old back then), the same goes for the EU release (almost 4 months after I was born). But the first one I played was aLttP, and that wasn't before 1994 when I was already 6 or 7.

In my lifetime? The Adventure of Link. I was born in '87, a year after The Hyrule Fantasy. Still, I played the first Zelda before TAoL. Oh how I love my old NES. I was so young... I started playing as a toddler, so of course everything pretty much had to be done for me. By the time A Link to the Past came out, I was able to play games on my own.

It was the first one. And I am old enough to remember playing/beating it. Which would be a cooler story if I were a lifelong gamer, but there has been a twenty-year gap between the NES (my last childhood console) and the Wii (current). I've managed to play eight of the games since becoming hooked again, though.

And sadly, I haven't played either.

I was born in 1995 so for me it would be Ocarina of Time. Then as more Zelda games came out, my friends told me that they really enjoyed the series and that I should try it out. Sadly, I didn't listen to them until I was like 11.

i was born in October 1992. I have no idea what the release dates were, but I remember my brother (he got me hooked..) and my father would sit in my room on Super Nintendo and play LttP for hours. Probably the only reason I could come close to doing anything with it was because I saw them play it first and would memorize what they did!

Well, if you count the color remake of Link's Awakening, then Link's Awakening DX for the Gameboy Color was released first, beating Ocarina of Time by about 2 months. I was born in early 1995 and there weren't some games for about 5 years after Link's Awakening (of course, I mean the original)
The game released in my lifetime was Adventure of Link, but the states didnt get either of the first two until after I was born. Some of my oldest memories are of my mom and dad playing adventure of link <3 We quickly got A Link to the Past - Zelda's always been in my life.

Ocarina of Time for me. That's what it is for many of the people here because a bunch of people on ZD are around 14 years old. And also there is a pretty big gap between Oot and LA increasing the chances of you being born in that time.

Well i was born in 1975 and i have seen every Zelda game released.
I was ten when LoZ was released.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can remember how excited i was when i knew the game was coming out.
It came out for the Nes Nintendo entertainment system.
It was a gold cartridge.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was the only game i ever saw for the Nes that had a colour other than Grey.
I remember thinking how fantastic this game was.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The idea of collecting weapons and solving puzzles etc was something id never seen before in a game.
Did i think Zelda would be still going strong after 25 yrs no i did not.
And i have the Nes with That first Zelda game anbd i still play it regular and i can say it holds many memories for me as a kid.

Link's Awakening came out the year before I was born (I was born August 21, 1994), so the first would have been Ocarina of Time when I was four, but I didn't play it until I was 9 when my older brother got our GameCube (my first video game home console) and it came with the Collector's Edition disc, and that's how I got into Zelda and by extension into video games as a whole.

Born November 7, 1992, so a little after the American release of ALttP. So kind of ALttP, as it was released in '91 in Japan, but it was LA for America. (My first one was OoT, though.)

I don't think Game Genie had any uses for the Zelda titles. I just remember I could do loads of crap in the Super Mario Bros. games with it. I don't think it had any Zelda uses, or at least, I don't recall using it for Zelda, myself.
Ah yes. I've been alive for the release of all the games too. I started playing Zelda games using the GG when I was about eight or so. Downloaded them on the VC about a month ago, and thought they'd be downright impossible without the GG. I was very wrong. Not easy games, but definitely doable. :D

Being born in 1984, The original Legend of Zelda came out when I was a baby. I feel old when others say OoT..
Adventure of Link was the first game I actually played though. I instantly fell in love with the series, though I couldn't even make it to the first dungeon. I would just roam around killing things. It wasn't until A Link to the Past when I really got into the series and was able to complete a game on my own.

Seeing how I was born in September 1997, mine would be Link's Awakening DX. The funny thing is, LA/LADX is my 2nd favorite Zelda (1st being TP). I, however did NOT grow up on Zelda. Heck, I didn't grow up on video games AT ALL. My 1st game console was a fat PS2 that I got for my 9th birthday. I got an Xbox soon after. Due to this, I grew up (somewhat) on Halo, Guitar Hero, and LEGO Star Wars. I was not introduced to Zelda until I got Twilight Princess on Wii in February 2009. I wasn't really hooked until September of that year, when I actually started really playing it

A Link to the Past for me. Oddly, it's the only Zelda game that I have that I have yet to beat.
Although it was already out in Japan, AoL had not been released here or in Europe, so I will consider that one to be the first Zelda game to be released after I was born.
