View Full Version : How Do YOU Open a New Game?

So, it's finally release day for that game you've been wanting for MONTHS. You hurry home excitedly from the store, or wait anxiously at the letterbox, and FINALLY, you have it in your possession, and it's time to open it. So what do you do? Do you tear it open, glancing admiringly at the cover, before jamming the game in your console and start playing as soon as possible... or do you slowly unwrap the packaging, carefully admiring every detail and savouring the intense moment just before you can finally play it? Or are you somewhere inbetween?
Personally, I normally do the latter, often, no matter how much I've been wanting something, it's surprisingly easy to resist opening it for just a little longer while I admire the box almost teasingly, savouring the moment. I love to do that xDD (odd, I know)
But what do you guys do?

Well. Let me see, I open the box and put the game in the system. I don't rip it open extremely fast or "savor every moment". I just open the game case and place the disk into the system like a normal sane person. I mean, you don't want to wreak it, plus it's kind of hard to get the plastic off fast. But why would you just sit there and "savor" opening the game case. I mean, I have plenty of time to look at the case on the way home from the store or as I walk away from my mail box if I preordered it for delivery. But uh.. That's just me.

I try to open it fast. I'm usually successful, but the plastic cover around it kind of strains my muscles and I usually end up having my cuticles injured by the edge of the box. Then I rip open the box, pop in the disc, and play.

Well when I wait months for a new game I tend to tear into the box like a mad man then it's onto button pressing, screen touching, microphone blowing, remote pointing, and controller shaking.

I open it right after I step out of the doors of the shop.
I open it right after I step out of the doors of the shop.
This.
If I have my game system with me, whatever it may be, I'm going to rip open that plastic wrap, with my hands, with my teeth, whatever I need to, to play as soon as I can if it really interests me that much.
If it's a console game, I'm still going to rip it open when I get it :p

I open it slowly and see anything that is necessary, I use this tactic to AVOID damaging the container of the game and to keep it as another storage box, cartridge case etc. as a spare.
Besides the slowly i open the game, the tension builds slowly and surely by the time I play the game, My tension, excitement, anxiety, happiness, disappointments, regrets, and salvation bursts out of me and I go Nuts about the game.

Haha, good question! I neve really thought about it before, but I tend to savour every moment of it. I don't needlessly make it a longer process than it has to be, but I look over all of the paper leaflets within. I also read the instruction booklet to get a general sense of the controls before the game walks me through the tutorial that seems to be commonplace in modern games. Some things aren't covered in-game I find, or maybe not made as clear as they could be.
I also tend not to play the title right away. I used to in my videogaming prime, but I have a small backlog of titles to work though right now. I never play two games at once either, unless it's the occasional Mario Kart circuit online with friends. So, the new game will patiently wait for me until I'm finished the current title.

the nearest game shop of any kind is about 30-mins away. So when i get a game, i get it the car, i open the packaging all slow-like, thinking of all the things i could do to it... wai- what? oh sorry. then i flip through the manual and admire the epicness that im about to unleash, then i get home and first thing, i start playing. and i usually am stuck playing the same game for the next few days.
slow then fast, thats the way its done, and yes that was intended to have a double meaning.

I usually savour it, as odd as that sounds. Especially if its a good game that I've been waiting for for a long time.
And I usually uh, smell it... uh
New game smells good. Come on whos with me?

I thought I was the only one... Glad to see I'm not alone! New games/manuals always smell good for some reason. Err, to get back on topic; most of the time I just tear it open unless it's a 360 game. It seem like I always need a knife to open those. Sometimes I'll read the manual first, but that doesn't happen a whole lot.

Oh... my... god... I thought I was the only one!! I HAVE HAPPINESS!! It just smells so good! I love smelling the inside of a DS case!

Wow, there's quite a variety of answers here xDD
ANd I'm with you too, I usually smell just about everything new I get, as odd as that sounds... new books (and booklets) smell so goooood. And new shoes, they always smell good too :D What's funny is if you smell the inside of a closed box, you can often smell the place where it came from xDD...
Anyway... I also hate it if you buy something preowned, and it's all torn up from the previous owner's eagerness... xDD So if I've opened it slowly, then if I trade it in the next person won't get a shredded/broken box (although nowadays, it's harder to damage the plastic game boxes... but not the console ones *shakes fist*)~
But I'm always worried about losing things if I opened it as soon as I got out of the shop... :c

Exactly. Once I got Pokemon Platinum, I got out of the shop, opened it up, played it in the car, and while we were in the mall later. I'm not really very patient when it comes to opening games. If it's on Christmas, when I'm opening my presents, I'll open all my presents, and once I'm done, I'll take each game one by one, open them as fast as possible, and play each of them for hours.

Well first off, some stores only sell the empty disc cases of the game and after you pay, then they put in the game in the disc case to prevent stealing.
If this happens, then i always check if the game disc is in a good shape.
When i come home, i first read the manual of the game and then start playing.
Depends on the game and the time.
First i buy the game, and at way home, i open it,
read the manual.
When im home, i start to play it.
And i like the smell of new books.

I generally do look over the packaging and *gasp!* maybe even open the instruction booklet. I know, I'm a loser. :P However, I do receive most of my games at holiday events (college is expensive, otherwise I would buy them myself), so I won't be able to play them for a few hours. Reading the packaging and the booklet makes me only more excited! :D
If I buy the game myself... Yeah, I tear into that baby. I want to play it NOW.

When I get a new game, I usually open it carefully, to avoid damging the case or the game itself... I always read the background of the case and overlook at the booklet. Then, I play the game and enjoy it. :)
When i get a new game, i'll try and find the little flap to rip the cling film off.
Then i'll look at the box, cover and read the stuff on the back.
Admire the disk art/cartridge
Sit back and read through the manual, looking at the art,
Then i'll start playing.
But it doesn't stop there xD I won't press anything, so it'll show that beggining... trailer? then goes to the usual start screen.

lol you read manuals.
Well, let's see. If it's just a game case then I'll just pick the plastic at the corners, open the case, and insert the disc and start playing.
If it's something like Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition, however, I take my time and admire everything and make sure everything is put away nice or assembled good or whatever.
Then I pull it out and insert it.

I start playing it ASAP. I generally really want to play a game because I'm excited about it. Although usually I'm still in the car or can't play at the moment for some reason, in which case I open it anyway and start reading the manual and such. Just more impatience really. :P

When I get a new game I usually just open the box as fast as possible cause I just want to play it right away. But for games such as pokemon, Zelda, or any sort of mario games, I usually take my time and admire the artwork on the box, read the back, and take gental care of the game (cause i dont want to break it first day i have it), maybe take a quick glance at the instruction manual, than i fire it up. I only do it to the games listed above since they are by far my favorite games around (Zelda #1!!!). I'm sure I'll act the same way when I would finnaly get my hands on Spirit Tracks! :)

I usually open it as soon as I get in the car to get home from the store. I'll admire the box art during the drive, and if I'm quite a ways from home, I'll read the instruction manual a bit so I'll get the gist of things before I play it. But I'll never read the manual if I can play the game right away, so DS game manuals don't get much attention from me. As soon as I get home, it goes right the console without a second though for the box or manual, seeing as I like to figure things out myself in-game.

Hmm...how do I open a new game, you ask? :hmm:
Well, after I have the game in my possession, I get the packaging that the game came in off and I look at the box that the game is in. Then I will proceed to read the manual. After that's all said and done, that's when I'll get the game out and start playing. :)

Well I open it like a chrismas present. I look like a little kid. :P Before I even play the game though, I look through the gaming book and read.

When I know I'm going to get a new game, I always bring that game system with me.
But only if that game I'm getting is for a portable game system... like the DS, GB SP, PSP...
Well I open it like a chrismas present. I look like a little kid. :P Before I even play the game though, I look through the gaming book and read.
xD Feces, wow... I gotta be there and record your reactions if I get YOU a game...
Though I've seen you when you get something interesting. You're pupils dilate and your eyes get all wide and sparkly...

I think I'll pick this one. ...And sometimes I reread manual after I quit my first play session.

I just open it normally and try to play it as soon as possible. I savour the game either while playing it or in my free time because the only thing that is on my mind is 'let's play the game already!'

When I buy get a game I absoulutley savour the moment.
1. Buy the game
2. Feel the plasitic wrapping
3. After leaving the store I smell the wrapped up box
4. slowly pick off the folds in the bottom corners
5. unwrap the plastic cover so only the center of the game box is unwraped
6. Smell again
7. slowly unwrap the rest of the box
8. Smell again and feel the strange coldness of the box
9. pry open the box
10.smell all parts of the box
11. on the drive home I admire the game chips art and color and read a small part of the manual note: read the warnings first
12. at home put game in DS/Wii/GC/GB note:if Ds game take out and put in again several times to hear the clicking.
13. play the game with box at side often admiriring it
14. before I go to bed I read the rest of the manual
I do most or all of that whenever I get a game. Unless Its a pokemon game and I have my DS in hand. Then imeadiently smell unwrap and play in the parking lot/sidewalk.

Most of the time, I ignore the manual, throw off the plastic covering the case, and open it. It is the cartridge/disc that makes it feel awesome! Either I slap it in or slowly put it in (not an option for Wii). Turning it on feels even more epic. Then, I hold the console/computer/TV captive until I reach a point in which I'm stuck. Whenever I get a new Zelda game, however, I play the "Get Item" theme. Whenever I get a new Mario game, I play the 1UP theme from the original game.
