Of the sidekicks that Link has had, Navi(being the first sidekick), and Midna(one of the newer sidekicks), which do you like more?

I prefer Midna over Navi.
Midna has a real personality, and she grows and develops as the game goes on.

Navi on the other hand has no personality, and plays almost no role in OOT's story.

That's why I chose Midna over Navi.

Navi has a lot of un-deserved bad rep for constantly saying "Hey....Listen", The only thing I found annoying about Navi was when she forced you to listen at the start for small things like how to open a door .....I'm pretty sure over the 10+ years Link has been there he opened a door.

Navi also doesn't add anything to the story, But if it were not for her we would have recieved a different sequel, She is the reason MM was made the way it was. Which is a plus but then again I think that the game would have been made just as good.

I prefered Midna much more, She looked good and was excellent compared to Navi, Navi was just a glowing orb with wings, Midna was an Imp like creature who could emotion which added to TP's Story.

Midna also added a lot of depth into TP, Her cutscenes were very good where as Navi's weren't so good. Navi always seemed calm other than 2-3 times, Midna was getting more angry as the game got on which I liked. It built up even more depth to the game.

She had powers that helped Link in his Wolf Form. In OoT you could warp around using the Ocarina of Time, Although the music was a loss to TP Midna was the reason you could warp around Hyrule.

Navi didn't really do much, She gave you a fair amount of useful hints throughout the game but they were out weighed by the amount of useless one's she gave you about everything. She didn't add any depth to the story really.

Then at the end Navi ran off with out much explanation, All I can remember is her just running off, If I remember correctly the reason she left was lame. Midna left because she feared letting what had happened to fall on Hyrule again because of her own people. I liked her ending as well, It was not running away but leaving for the sake of Hyrule.

As you can see above this is why I much prefer much...

i loved navi in OoT how you never had a fairy and then when you get navi every one tells you yay you got a fairy!

I depends on what your comparing. navi is more useful, but midna's a better supporting character. (they're both equally annoying)

I'll be quite honest when I say that I found Navi to be much more helpful during my first play through of OoT. The first time you go through it, she's not that annoying at all. In fact, I was relieved when I heard her little "Hey!" because I knew I was about to get an not-so-obvious hint. Midna was really all that helpful game play wise. Very few times did I press the Z or Up button to get her opinion about a situation, mainly because I never really needed any help. Having said all that though, I'll go with Midna because she's such a better character. While Navi does have sort of a purpose story wise, Midna has a much greater and better one. Midna also had a personality, something that Navi lacked.

I adore both of them.
But if I had to choose, I would say Midna. I just love her spunk and sarcasm, where as Navi was kind and...rather boring. xD But I love her nevertheless.

She's my ringtone. When I get a text message, my phone says "hey! listen!" xD

OMG Navi is my least favorite thing in all zelda games! She WAS useful for the first two minutes but then it got realy annoying!

Midna is better as she was actuly useful most of the game because you could warp and turn into a wolf.

But I still dislike sidekicks altogether so thats what I chose.

I never found Navi annoying. But I think Midna is a better character and she has more personnality.

I prefer Midna as she felt like she had more of a story, and I found her marginally less annoying than navi.

I voted for Midna and my reason is just one and you might call it a pathetic one. My reason is that Midna is bigger and more "human"like. A fairy like Navi etc. is just too small and tiny in my opinion.

I prefer Midna.
Navi has only the role to help you out, she didn't fill a story in OOT. Button info, opening doors and all that. She is really annoying when you know that all... Always annoys you with ''HEY'' ''LISTEN'' while i know what to do.

Navi is not so sarcastic as Midna. Midna had more to tell. she has a big role in TP.
Also Midna has a cool look, the fairy idea was just a simple design. But Navi was always not so annoying as Tatl right? Tatl was killing me in MM >_< Stupidness.
I liked the glowing fairies though. Midna is just win, her ''normal'' human form is totally awesome.

Midna for sure, she was cool. Navi was just plain annoying and never had anything useful to say.

some people actually chose Navi? thats.......strange.0.o
Navi pissed me off so much. I'd be walking through the Lost woods as a child and all of a sudden,"HeyLookListenHeyLookListenHeyLookListen. Lets go see what Saria has to say."
Itried catching her in a bottle.

I prefer Navi, because she dosen't take the spotlight of the entire game. Also, another key difference between the two which makes me like Navi better is that Midna treats you like her servant through the game. Unlike Midna, Navi was unaware of what would happen in the future, and was litterally you companion, and knew just as much about the plot as you did your first time.

In my opinion Midna completely destroys navi cuz midna has a personality while navi doesn't, midna actually gives link good advice while navi does the opposite, midna actually helps you get from place to place while navi just floats around you, midna is funny while navi isn't. I'll leave it there.

Navi is better because she added the adventure for me. She also didn't have millions of grotesque pictures of her. Midna makes me wanna throw up every time. Her face, her helmet, her human form, her fused shadow form, her cuddling around Link with a devilish smile, her Joker smile, and worst of all... she teases you the first time you see her. Midna had personality. A real trashy one. She showed affection for Link and mocked him. That is just ruining Link's good name.

she went with that story more and Midna looks stupid

Well this is hard to say because Navi will say this is how to defeat an enemy and Midna well is funny and more of the story. So I would have to say Midna is more me. One fairy you forgot is Tatl the fairy in MM but I still say Midna is my favorite.

I don't know many people that don't like Midna beside myself. Midna just seemed to be more annoying than most characters. She acts like Link is her little slave a lot of the time, riding on his back when Link is in Wolf form. Sure, she was used for some things, like teleporting and such, but she didn't give much advice during puzzles like Navi did.

I also didn't like how Midna was, say, flirty. Especially when you first meet her, she seems like she really digs Wolf Link (owOOOOOOO). Her personality as a whole kind of annoyed me, even though it seems that most people loved her personality.

The way she talked was a small annoyance at times. I don't think whatever language she uses seems to flow well, haha. Although it's pretty funny when you can hear english words or phrases in her "Twilight Language", or whatever you want to call it.

I will admit that it was kind of cool to see her in human form at the end of the game. As a human she seemed a lot more mature than her other form, and I liked that about her.

I think people tend to overrate how annoying Navi is. They act like she's the most annoying player in the whole series, and their only reasoning is "It's annoying when she always says 'hey' and 'listen', and she doesn't give any useful information".

People like this annoy me. Sure, the "hey" and "listen" got annoying at times. But I kind of liked the fact that it was a reminder for me that, hey, you have this fairy, and she can tell you how to solve some puzzles and beat some enemies.

Which leads me to the fact that that Navi was a lot more helpful than Midna, in my opinion. A lot of people think her information is annoying and unhelpful because the only time they've ever used her for anything was when she automatically tells you how to open a door in the Deku Tree. In reality, though, she can help you out. Some minibosses and other enemies were difficult for me to figure out at first, but Navi was right there to tell me how to beat them. People really take her tips for granted.

So overall, I like Navi better than Midna. I'm one of the rare few that disliked Midna's personality, and used Navi's information. Neither are particularly bad sidekicks, though. I've never really thought that the sidekicks in any game angered me too much.

i never thought of navi as annoying during my first playthrough of OOT because it was my first zelda ever.

during my later plays of OOT navi is totally annoying

i prefer midna over navi now because midna never tells you useless things

I didn't vote because I like them both about equally. I suppose I'll address my thoughts about Navi first...

I did not find Navi very annoying, actually. Tons of people seem to hate her, but she never really bothered me. Actually, rather than her saying "Hey" or "Listen", the only thing she did that ever vaguely irritated me was when she'd occasionally chime in and say where you were supposed to go next. That was kind of annoying, especially in a game with so many sidequests. It would be better if you had the option of asking her like in Twilight Princess.

I liked her enough as a character. Actually I found her quite likable, and some of the things she did were actually kind of cute and amusing, like the whole "Fairy Flying" sequence at the beginning.

She was also a great hint system, and I liked how she functioned a lot.

Now, Midna. I actually hated her guts throughout the first three dungeons of the game. I heard people really liked her, but when I actually saw her, I found her so incredibly annoying and rude. I thought she was a *****. :xd:

Although as time went on... more specifically around the completion of the Lakebed Temple, I took a liking to her. It started with her dialogue when you collected the final Fused Shadow, and it only continued during the sequence with Zant in Lanayru's Spring, and then throughout the rest of the game. She was a very detailed and interesting character, and the lessons she learned throughout the game were very intriguing and they made her into a very likable and in some cases admirable character.

Unfortunately, she wasn't as good as a hint system in my opinion. On both ends of the spectrum, actually. She didn't give you information one whatever you were looking at, which I disliked and frankly, I've missed that since Ocarina of Time. She only gave you vague hints or sometimes just statements about the area you were in. Then on the other hand, the second you encountered certain puzzles, she'd immediately give you an extremely revealing hint, more or less telling you how to do the puzzle before you even start it. I didn't like that.

Though Midna did have some cool powers for you to take advantage of, such as warping and turning into a wolf. I did like that. :)

So for me they both had their pros and cons, and I liked them both equally. Navi was a better hint system, but Midna was a more interesting character. I liked Navi's personality better, but Midna had cool powers. :P

Definantely Midna. She actually helps you with both information and techniques and is also part of the game. Navi on the other hand, she only says the same things over and over and which can get quite annoying (especially when you want to zoom in, you have to wait for her to shut up) and isn't much in the story, while Midna is.

Well let's see:

Navi
She was a good side kick and gave you info on your enemies, Midna doesn't, she played a small role through the game as giving you hints as to what to do next. But she didn't have anything intersting about her except she is a fairy and the great deku tree sent her to guide you and she would of ignored you if you weren't the hero of time.

Midna
Well she has a role of being your side kick and she does a better job than Navi, she plays a major role in Tp and grows to become a better friend than Navi, she also gives you special abilites in the game, transfroming into a wolf, warpping, and basiclly becomes your best friend, which Navi on the other hand doesn't try to at all, she just pretends to show feeling when she feels sad for you (last boss battle when she says your fighting together against Ganon).

So ultimately Minda would be my choice rather than Navi.:D:thinking::nerd:

I think you got to know Midna alot more than you got to know Navi. Alot of things happened in the game where Midna became a more familiar character. Midna had her weak hour where she was vulnerable, her spunky personality, and her transformation at the end. All of these things made her character in the game develope more. I didn't mind Navi, I just prefer a character who you feel like you get to know in a sense.

Even though I prefer OOT over TP, I like Midna better than Navi, and always will, Midna isn't annoying, she's got personality, and an overall contribution to the story, as with recent Sidekicks such as Linebeck. No wait, I take back calling Midna a sidekick, she's more like a partner.

I agree with Axle the Beast, and I didn't vote either :P
My thoughts...

NAVI
Only on later replays did I actually find her annoying- at the time when I played it, I thought it was a really cute idea to have a fairy companion. And even now, her little glowing light always emboldens me in the darkest of caverns... I always found her pretty supportive, just by her presence, if not her dialogue~
And the hints she gave were extremely useful, especially her ability to find enemy weak points. She only really nags at you if you ignore her xDD

MIDNA
I really hated Midna at the start, came across as inconsiderate and bossy :( But as time went along, she gradually became kinder, humbler, until she was at the point of being a supportive partner. On looking back, this was actually a pretty creative way of presenting her character, her personality. I especially like the fact she actually kind of fights-along-side you, with her dark energy attack and when she helps you leap. Though her hints could've been a bit more informative, but her sharp sarcasm actually discouraged me from asking for help, which I'd say is a good thing xDD And imp Midna's adorable to boot xD

--
So yeah, I love them both really... but if I were to vote, I'd probably go for Midna, just because I like the more active role she seemed to take in fighting situations, as supposed to just providing information :3

But in Navi's defence, there aren't actually any other doors in the Kokiri Village, so it would actually have been the first time Link had seen a door xD I guess she felt she should say something, just in case he started gnawing at the doorknob or something

Okay this is a tie for me. Navi is nearly useless, and she tells you the most retarded things( Like you walk up to a door and she says"strong iron bars are covering the door" dur de dur) while she tells you what like the enemy is and gives hints on how to destroy it.

But then there's midna who fits into the story more than navi(IMO) but she is just odd, all she does half the time is just sit there and giggle....

This is why I can't really decide.

Why only two sidekicks? What about Tatl, Ezlo, and Ceila? I suppose they are less known then navi and midna, but why not include all sidekicks? I for one found navi's voice unbearable, although she wasn't all that frustrating to be honest. Midna plays an important part in the story, but she's in a way more annoying than navi, because I felt that while navi was just a ball of pixels giving hints, midna was a character with a bad personality. I never grew to like midna, or appreciate her constantly following you. I just found her to be a pain as the story progressed, her character grew tiring.

I loved tatl. She had an attitude, but it wasn't forced and constantly in your face like midna's was. She was more snide and quiet, which I appreciated, too much sidekick, unless executed very well, is not a good thing. Supporting characters should stay supporting characters, which is why I found Midna annoying, she seemed to be an annoying sidekick who morphed into an annoying main character, which is even worse.

I have yet to play Minish Cap, so Ezlo is relatively unknown to me (besides the fact that he sits on link's head) and Ceila was a lukewarm character whose personality felt a bit forced. Luckily she mostly stayed out of the way, rarely did the game force you to take part in long conversations with her. Her character just felt too generic and false to be enjoyable.

I didn't really care much for either of them, to be honest.

Navi, was somewhat annoying at times. I wouldn't say she is as annoying as a lot of people make her out to be, but she isn't a favourite either. The thing I found to be annoying, was not so much her incessant shouts of 'Hey', and such, but more the fact she was too helpful at times.
For example, when I am fighting a boss, especially a somewhat more difficult one, I'd rather not have any hints or clues, I would rather figure it out on my own.

I actually found Tatl to be worse than Navi. At least Navi wasn't an *** about everything. When you Z-targeted an enemy in Majora's Mask, Tatl would make some remark about your ignorance of it, or something to that effect.

Midna, whilst she obviously was a key addition to the story of Twilight Princess, and while I don't really mind her being in the game, I didn't particularly like her.
This doesn't mean I hated her, or anything of the sort, but I thought she could be a tad annoying at times, but not to the point that it really bothered me. I think it she showed quite an improvement in character development for her sort of character, but other times I think her role became too prominent, and overshadowing other aspects.

I wouldn't choose either Navi or Midna, I don't really like or dislike either of them.

For some reason I love Navi more then Midna. I guess I love OOT more then TP! Anyways, although Navi was quite anoying I still felt a bounding between Link and Navi. i think navi is def better then midna. I hated midna to be honest. She thought who she was and would talk **** to anyone who would listen. It was annoying. Navi served her purpose she never did anything besides give you little hints. She had no real personality. She wasnt trying to be a friend or w/e just simply a guide to help first time players. Midna was a little romantically confused imp

Well, Minda really doesn't care about you as much as Navi does, but, at least she doesn't talk as much!
Overall, I say Minda is better than that little pain in the butt fairy.
But... Navi did give you hints on how to defeat enemies.
So, I guess they're both pretty cool.

As much as I thought Navi was semi-rememberable character from back in the day, Midna has a good backstory, along with good character traits and progression. Navi's just sort of ... there. She's only really there to help you to a low degree.

Navi actually gave you info on enemies and how to get through the game but she was a little boring

I like them both, now. Don't get me wrong. I guess Midna is, overall, a more appealing character. Her personality is dark and cute.

Having said that, I like Navi more hands down. She gave so much useful info in OoT. I had been wondering about enemy names since the first time I played a Zelda game. And Navi had a name for just about all of them. I realize this is a sort of in character game mechanic, but hey, it's useful!

Navi had a pretty good line during the fight with Ganon. I guess it's not as cool as Midna's boldly challenging Ganondorf, but it's pretty appealing in its own right. What exactly was Navi going to do against Ganon? Float around him and scream "hey, listen and watch out" over and over? I've laughed about that to no end, all to navi's credit.

There's a certain mystery associated with Navi, too. She faithfully sticks by Link until the end of the game, where she suddenly floats away, not appearing in the next game. Was she really his friend? Or was she there out of a sense of obligation? Who knows? (Yes, that's right. I like plotholes. :P)

Petman1325
12-09-2009, 06:14 AM
Well, I've got a good discussion here for me. Remember, OoT is my favourite, but I thought just about all of the Zeldas were great.

For starters, character development/involvement in the plot. Well, when you think about it, Navi wasn't much involved with the plot. The only thing she did was be the annoying back seat driver (not as annoying as Tatl's bell, however). But, if it wasn't for Navi, Link would have never came to the Deku Tree in his time of crisis (and inevitable death, even if you killed Queen Gohma in thirty seconds with jump attacks and Deku Sticks), or have gone to visit Zelda, or be able to learn about the boss' weak points. However, being directly with the plot, the only plot twist she was involved with was leaving Link at the end of the game and joining Link at the start of the game.

As for Midna, she was quite involved. Is it me, or does her character development seem similar to Linebeck's (selfish at start, very involved at the end, which I think Tatl did that as well)? However, it is that that makes her stand out. She, at first, only used Link as a pawn (someone to do the work for her), not as an actual person. However, it is at that breaking point that she does, in the end, decide to help out Link's and her own causes. However, when you consider it this way, Navi was on Link's side the entire time. Referring to the previous sentence, it was that move that made Navi lack character development, because she knew everything about you and you didn't need to know much about her in the first place. So, for plot/character development, I would have to say Midna won this round.

Now, when it comes to usefulness, there is a bit of a breaking point here. Midna helped you out throughout the quest by saving you from being a wolf for eternity and warping you, but Navi tells you the weak points of each boss/enemy (unless she doesn't know) and helps you target an enemy. So, like I said, there's a breaking point. All of those events are a bit important, but Midna's seems to be a smidge more important, even though I am about to say that both of them win this round.

So, as for who I prefer more? Character wise, I prefer Midna. Usefulness, I prefer both. Yet, Navi actually had that heart-felt feeling towards Link (in a way) that Midna didn't really expose. Then again, Midna helped fight Ganondorf. Yet, I'm still picking a tie for that. Being the OoT fanboy I am, I would have to say Navi, but in general, I would have to say that both were actually pretty awesome.

Out of the companions, Navi wins. She was actually helpful, and she didn't have a 'tude. Sure, she's annoying inside the Deku Tree, but after that, she almost never says anything. Plus, she does thing out of the goodness of her... heart? Midna was more, 'if you're a good little doggie, I might help you.'

Now, character-wise, Midna wins. But only 'cause she changes throughout the game.

But since this topic is about the sidekicks, Navi gets my vote.

As much as navi is put down she is a sidekick. Midna worked her way into the game as a sidekick but as it progressed we see that she was becoming the main part of it. We rarely saw zelda. I think a sidekick should only be there to assist you when your lost not become part of the story. Midna also created alot of uneeded trouble for Link.

I actually prefer having a fairy as a sidekick. I think that really fits well with the Zelda aesthetic.

That said, the personality is more important, and I think Midna wins out for that reason...she actually has a personality.

I wonder if there will be a sidekick in the new games, and what it will be...

I like Midna a LOT better than Navi. Navi was cute and all but she had no personality and she was extremely annoying with they "Hey!" "Hey!"
Midna has a cool personality, a more intricate past, less annoying (although can still be annoying at times), she has a mind of her own rather than just following the orders of the Deku tree, and she looks super cool! The first thing my boyfriend said when he played the game for the first time was "Midna would make a great tattoo"

Midna is funny. I liked her sarcasm. Navi was not much more than just a voicemail. Hey, listen. Midna had conversations and she helped Link with climbing etc.

To be honest, I don't entirely trust Midna, and still think she may secretly be as evil as her Twili ancestors. Midna is kind of... too dark, arrogant, and apathetic. In other words, she seems more like a Zelda player than a Zelda character. I hated how whenever I felt like mentally making a condescending remark about Link's obliviousness, she'd beat me to the punch.

I liked Navi better because she seemed more loyal/nice, and would never think to plot against you, manipulate you, or betray you. Also, you get the feeling that she's your helper and needs you, while with Midna she makes you feel like HER lackey. It detracts from the typical feeling of control you have over the character, makes it feel like Midna is controlling Link instead of you.
