View Full Version : Your Favorite RPGs

RPGs for me have been a strange genre for me. I didn't really start getting into them until later in the SNES' lifespan with games like Breath of Fire and EarthBound though I never really got into the Square RPGs at the time. So one of things I wanted a PS1 for was to finally get a real chance to play RPGs from what was considered the best RPG company in the world. When we got our PS1, one of the first games I got was FF7. Suffice to say, the game nearly killed my interest in the genre and 8 threw it off a cliff onto the jagged rocks below.
So for several years, RPGs were pretty much persona non grata for me outside of playing EarthBound a ton. It wouldn't be until I got Paper Mario for the N64 that I got back my interest in the genre and while I'm not as obsessed as my friend, Travis, I've found myself enjoying several RPGs of many different varieties, though I still loathe FF7 and 8.
Right now I am playing Persona 4 and enjoy the modern setting and trippy layout. Though I'm pretty sure I am no where near finishing it.
Of course, I'm rambling. My whole point for this thread is: What are Your Favorite RPGs?
1. EarthBound
2. Skies of Arcadia Legends
3. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Tales of Symphonia
Lots, of exposition for a pretty short list huh?

I'm not the biggest Final Fantasy fan either, but I really enjoyed X and X-2. All the others are meh. Pokemon is a favorite too, and I've enjoyed the later Paper Mario games as well. I've never played EarthBound, but from what I've heard, it seems like it's excellent.

My favorite RPGs are Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger.
I like Super Mario RPG for a couple of reasons.
First it has a cool story(well for a Mario game anyway).
Second it mix the Mario world, with the RPG world, and did a awesome job with it.
I picked Chrono Trigger for it's epic storyline, and the timetraveling was really cool.
Plus both games are fun to play.

Well, there is not much to write on this thread but I'll post my top 5 RPGs
5-Final Fantasy Tactics Advance: I loved this game back when I borrowed it from a friend of mine, it was so fun, and I really loved the story. I got disappointed with the sequel.
4-Fire Emblem-Shadow Dragon: When I first got into the series, it was via the GCN game, and I really didn't enjoyed it, but I have to admit, this game is a jewel to be polished and loved
3- Secret of Mana: The First RPG I ever played, back into my cousin's snes and now on my DS. It's an awesome game with a very decent story.
2- Final Fantasy VII/FFVII Crisis' Core: I am not gonna separate them, cause they are both parts of the same story. One of the best RPGs ever, what else can I say?Oh, it has sephiroth:D
1- Earthbound: For anyone who hasn't played this game, you should really hook up to your pc and download a rom(I am not suggesting getting the original game for the SNES cause it's pretty rare and a cartridge is usually worth 75 dollars, while the full package goes up to 120 dollar). This rpg has everything: mistery, plot twists, lovable characters...
It still gets me hooked every single time I play it
I've played a few RPG's, and there were some I liked, and other I didn't.
My favourites would definately be Chono Trigger and Pokemon. I think I need to try new RPGs though just to see if I'd like them or not.

Besides Pokemon, which is my favorite RPG as of now, I really enjoyed Paper Mario for the N64. Some RPG's can feel a little hollow to me, and make me think "do I really want to play this?". But Paper Mario was perfect, and held my interest up to the end.
I did like FF3 for the GB quite a lot, but I never got around to beating the final boss. I think I needed to find one more of the legendary swords though.
Beyond that, I'm not a huge fan of RPG's. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates was another exception, as I like real-time combat more than turn based.

I oddly didn't really get into the whole RPG genre, even though I really enjoyed playing some older RPGs on the NES and SNES. I can't think of what they all are, but I enjoyed Super Mario RPG (definitely!), Ultima (NES), and one of the Final Fantasy's for the NES. I really don't remember which one it was though.

Wow, I can't believe I forgot Kingdom Hearts in my earlier post. Really, this game is among one of the best RPGs I've ever played. I think the main reason I like it so much id because of its amazing real time battle system. Battles go so much quicker than with a turn based system, which allows you to follow the storyline with a nice flow. Others disagree, but I thought the story in this game was very well thought out and organized.

So no one is of the obsessive RPG fan who buys RPGs of most niche variety?
My friend buys all these RPGs that I would otherwise never heard of, like Ar Tonelico. These RPGs are so niche that they are even niche in Japan.

Unfortunately I have limited experience when it comes to RPGīs. But when I see that a game like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance made it to your list I guess I should be glad that my experience is limited, because I never really understood what was so great about it! I never understood which characters should be developed and used, and why.
But I might try EarthBound someday since itīs recommended by many and including you my friend :)

I'm pretty big into the following:
Final Fantasy (Any of them really)
Any of the Tales games. (Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Vesperia, etc.)
Luminous Arc series

1. Final Fantasy IV
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
4. Final Fantasy VI
5. Final Fantasy V
6. Final Fantasy I
7. Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy is a great RPG series. :)
Chrono Trigger is a very old RPG, but it is a very outstanding RPG. Very unique and has a great story and plenty of ways to play it. A lot of work was put into that game, I can tell.
And anybody who has played Super Mario RPG can't help but say that they love it.

And anybody who has played Super Mario RPG can't help but say that they love it.
I can say that it is the 5th best Mario RPG and soon to be 6th best after I playe Mario & Luigi 3.
The problem with SMRPG is that the game feels like a RPG Square was making and then pasted a Mario theme over it. They throw in an awkward platforming element and some lame original characters (Geno and Mallow suck) and put it out there.
It is a good game but the Paper Mario and M&L series did a far better job with replicating the Mario feel onto an RPG medium.

I agree!
The market needs more games that have real-time battles (Like Kingdom Hearts or Zelda!) or things to do during turn based battles (Like Mario and Luigi!).
Turn based games are boring.
I'm getting bored of pokemon now.

Oh geez, this is kind of hard. I love RPGs.
1. FF3
2. Tales of Symphonia
3. FF4
4. Tales of Phantasia
5. Pokemon D/P/Pt
I'm sure that some more FF and Tales titles would be up there if I decided to buy a PlayStation and play them. :)

3. Pokemon G/S/C ~ These in my opinion were the best of the pokemon series. Now I know Pokemon isn't considered an RPG but it functions like one. Random encounters, turn based battles, items, leveling up, the usual.
2. Earthbound -- This is a great RPG because it had a good plot, good setting, and replaced 16-25 year old swords and sorcery style protagonists with psionic preteens (minus the one that uses the missiles and stuff). Plus its predecessor was named after the song written by John Lennon and makes millions of Beatles references. The only reason its not 1 is to show my disliking to how Shigesato Itoi does not plan to put it on Virtual Console and holding Mother from the US.
1. Super Mario RPG ~ This one is the best RPG of all time (I'm gonna guess Chrono Trigger would be better if I actually could play it) in my opinion. this one is the only one in the RP Mario Games that didn't use cartoony outlooks. It looked like an RPG, and it looked like Mario. Geno really sparked it, playing as Bowser was cool, Mallow is okay, and Peach is cool for those healing psionic moves.

I'll confess I'm not a huge fan of the RPG genre. I like RPGs, but I'm not terribly into the traditional ones (think the main Final Fantasy series.)
But when it comes to nontraditional RPGs, I'm a huge fan. Some of my favorites:
Final Fantasy Tactics
Kingdom Hearts
Parasite Eve
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Basically I like action RPGs and tactical RPGs the best. I also like RPGs where the attacks and abilities require button presses or minigames, as well as ones with really unique fighting systems.

pretty simpe, just name your favorite RPG (Loz games don't count, they're action/adventure games). mine's chrono trigger because of the good story, combination techniques, and fast-paced combat.:D

I can agree with you on that, Chrono Trigger all the way. I played Chrono Trigger a long time ago, though. I did just about everything there is to do, collected the most powerful weapons for each character that I could, went through the different endings and all that. The game was a ton of fun. It was definitely more enjoyable than most of the Final Fantasy games. I absolutely loved it.

pokemon is possibly the only rpg i like, they simply arent my thing, i tried so hard to get myself into elder scrolls 4 oblivion and just couldnt, no matter how hard i tried. and no dont tell me zelda is an rpg, zelda has next to no rpg elements whatsoever, zelda 2 (which i love) is almost an rpg, just because of the leveling up

PMD explorers of sky. i loved the plot. Pokemon used to be my favorite series (until i knew TWW existed) and realized the plot should be deeper. Since PMD spin-off series had the best and sky was the first one I beat its my favorite!(but i dont know if its an RPG)

@FirevsIce yeah it is, but it's a special type of RPG called a dungeon crawler (i think.)

Gotta say Super Mario RPG was a favourite... :)
Phantasy Star Episodes 1&2, a beautiful, futuristic RPG. It's a bit outdated now and has sequels, but I will never grow old of that game. Also, it's the only game I own which I haven't completed, it's just TOO long.

I didn't play that many RPGs yet, but out of the ones I played I'd say Final Fantasy IV and V, I really liked them. SMRPG was good too, the only thing I can complain about is that it was a bit reduced compared to FF (Paper Mario, while having a really good story, nice music and graphics, was a bit too limited for me). Since it has been overwhelmingly praised by almost everyone, I think I'll give Chrono Trigger a try in the near future. But I wonder if it is actually some sort of "Final Fantasy Light" with reduced stats, leveling etc, or does it even add things? And does it contain a lot of Sci-Fi? (Because I'm not really a fan of spaceships, light sabres and the like, I rather prefer a medieval setting in my fantasy games)

Well, Pokemon Yellow is my favorite so far, but I'm getting Secret of Mana soon, so it might change.

@blubb it's kinda like one fourth sci-fi. the game's main feature is time travel and one place you go to is the desolate future, but don't worry, you're not going to be light saber dueling with darth vader on the moon, the game maintains that medieval feel for almost the entire game.
@Epwna i wouldn't get my hopes up if i were you. the game isn't all it's cracked up to be. :(

it was just so great: graphics (on GBA) we awesome, the Djinni were fun cause you had to find them, then use them stratigically in your battles, and the battle system was good too.
Best part about it was there was very little need for GRINDING which we all hate...

My first RPG ever Pokemon Blue. I was five or six at the time of the game and the gameboy massive sulphide. Shortly after I moved to gameboy pocket, gameboy color and then. I was really into Pokemon when I was a kid. My collection included blue, red, yellow, gold, silver, Crystal, Ruby and Sapphire.

I'd have to say.... Quite a few, now that I think of it. My first RPG was Dungeon Lords for the PC (Everyone hates it for some reason, but I loved it), and I will always have a special place for it because it was my first RPG. Recently, I've been playing Secret of Mana. Now there is an awesome game. Such open-ended exploring, in a world so extremely massive that I still can't believe it when I ride on Flammie the dragon. I like that game A LOT. It has great graphics, too. Also, I loved paper mario for the 64, and it's GC sequel the thousand year door. I am also currently enjoying Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii, although I'm not sure that it counts as an rpg.

Phantasy Star IV: The end of the Millennium .. it brought perfect closure to the series up to that point, had a great story, awesome combos, lots of characters with various personalities, and was lengthy, but you didn't spend 3/4 of the game leveling up.

I'd say Pokemon Silver, if I considered it an RPG. When I hear RPG, I think Role Playing Game. As in playing the role of a specified character. In Pokemon Blue, are you forced to have a Pikachu, give up your Squirtle, and steal a Gym Leader's bike? I thought so. I love the game Pokemon Silver, but I don't consider it an RPG. So my favorite RPG is Earthbound. It's funny, quirky, makes a lot of pop culture references, and bases it's final boss off an R-rated murder scene. The graphics are also SUPERB for it's time. It doesn't even need some stupid 32-bit device or Super FX Chip like Super Mario RPG or StarFox. It's also pretty fun to experiment with items and PSI Powers. For instance, let's try using a Protractor. "Ness used the Protractor! Now, Ness can measure angles with ease!" ...and the rowdy mouse smashes him to death. It's a classic, not only for being fun, but also humorous in nature.

This is a real tough question; you'd have to split it into more specific categories, like these:
Western RPG: Usually contains some sort of leveling system, upgrades, and occasional talent trees, with real-time combat. Examples include Fallout, Mass Effect, etc.
Japanese RPG: Often turn-based and heavily reliant on strategy, party members, and leveling up. Examples include Final Fantasy series, Pokemon series, etc.
MMORPG: Any online game that requires teamwork and social skills, as well as massive amounts of time and effort. EG: World of Warcraft.
My favourite Western RPG is Mass Effect 2, by far, but my favourite JRPG is a much harder choice. Mario and Luigi: Super Star Saga and Chrono Trigger probably take the top prize, with Pokemon coming in pretty close, too.
My favourite MMO is by far WoW, despite the fact that it ruined my life, created horrible addictions and stole my soul for a very long time with enormous repercussions. But man, it sure was fun. :xd:

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. The game is truly a masterpiece. It has plenty of good humor, but it also knows when to be serious. The music is spine-tingling, each piece is unique and fits in with each and every environment. While I'm on the subject of environments, the places you visited were very diverse. One moment you're in a land of perpetual twilight trying to save its citizens from being turned into pigs, the next you're on a ritzy train to solve the mystery behind a sticky, yummy threat. All of Mario's partners are awesome in their own way, and you must use all of their abilities if you are to complete your quest. Oh, and the final boss is seriously epic, easily matching Ganon in terms of evil and awesomeness (I won't spoil it).
Whew, finally got all that out. Didn't mean to rant, but no one comes between me and my TTYD!
