I was surprised that I couldn't find a thread on this. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Sonic the Hedgehog. He's one of gaming's most popular figures, and he's had several games over the past few years. What do you think of all of them? Personally, I thought the Sonic games were much better in 2D. Some of the 3D games are okay, such as Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Unleashed, but they're nowhere near as good as the 2D titles.

I like almost all the Sonic games.
The 2-D,games were fun,and the first two Sonic Adventure games were pretty cool, but then Sega added gimmicks to the newer games which has slowly made the series go downhill.

Sonic is my favorite game character right underneath Link, and Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) was the first game I ever played in my life. Definitely a landmark moment.
It's a sad thing that he's floundering so poorly in the current gen market. He has the potential to have great games, but Sonic Team is just plain horrible at their job.

you know what they need to do? they need to go back to their side scrolling adventures. think of it like Kirby style. when they made Kirby for the N64 they didnt make it a 3D world roaming adventure. they made 3D graphics but kept the 2D gameplay and i think that this is what sonic should do with their console games. the 2D side scrolling games were awesome and thats what made the sonic games so good. there were plenty of obstacles and things like that and they should have just kept it that way. not to say that sonic adventure and sonic adventure 2 werent good (because i thought they were) but after those 2 games the 3D games started becoming TERRIBLE. also, whenever they make handheld games now they make RPGs and handheld versions of the console games (which never turn out that well) so i think they just need to stick with their sidescrolling formula because it was working just fine.

I liked the 2D sonic game I played on the Xbox 360 arcade. I dont remember what it was called but it reminded me of Super Mario Bros a little ^^
Other then that game I have never really played any others. I guess I kind of avoid it because lots of people say Sonic is not very good anymore or most people I meet dont like the games at all.

2D Sonic = Great fun and some of the best games from the era.
3D Sonic = Some of the worst 3D platformers of all time.

here are the sonic games you should play that are good and are definitely worth playing:
Sonic the Hedgehog (sega)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (sega)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (sega)
Sonic and Knuckles (sega)
Sonic Adventure (dreamcast/gamecube)
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (dreamcast/gamecube)
other than those i have never played a really good Sonic game. Sonic the Hedgehog for 360 was ok but the load times for the game were ridiculously long. it was cool being silver and getting to like stop bullets and shoot them back at enemies but the game felt very rushed and it didnt seem like they put much time into it.

Yes, my favorite 3D title would have to be Sonic Adventure 2 while my favorite 2D title would have to be Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I have to disagree with you about Sonic 06. I really think that has been the worst Sonic game in the entire history of the Sonic franchise.
Another thing that annoys me about the 3D games: All the worthless characters. I didn't mind the characters they introduced in SA2 at all (Shadow, Rouge), but Big, Omega, Blaze, they all seem like worthless characters that aren't necessary. (Not the Chaotix though. They're the only reason Sonic Heroes was worth playing. :D)

My brother had a Sega once and Sonic was an awesome character (I donīt remember which game I tried or what console but I know it was a 2D game). I wouldnīt mind trying out a 3D game with Sonic as a main character, but like some folks mentioned, even without ever tried a 3D Sonic I suspect itīs not as good as the 2Dīs. Not everything is perfecction in 3D is my opinion.

Sonic was decent, back in the days of the 2-D games on sega platforms...
Nowadays, I don't even like the 2-D titles...
My favorite one is Sonic and Knuckles, because you know, knuckles rocks:D

I've been a big fan of Sonic for a long time, although as of late I haven't played many of the games and have been into other series.
I only own a collection of Sonic games on the PC. I think it's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. Plus some kind of weird combination of the two.
Great games, though, seriously. The 3D incarnations are very different games, but I still find them very fun.

D: I missed his funeral.

This is a subject which I feel more strongly about than any other subject in gaming to be honest.
Back in the day, my sister had a Nintendo NES, which was technically "hers". My first system, recieved at the age of 4, was the Sega Genesis. So from a very young age, as much as I like the Mario series, I have always been a much bigger fan of Sonic.
On topic, the "classics" are better. Not necessarily just the fact that the 2D games are better than the 3D ones. Some of the crap that Sega has came out with over the past few years has pretty much made me sick of the Sonic series. I never, ever look forward to a new Sonic title being released, but rather go to look how degrating the series has gotten once I do hear about it. Sonic Rush was okay, but it wasn't as fun as the classics. Those games include Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, and any of those that you locked on with S&K. Oh, and Sonic Spinball, but it was more side-gamish. Sonic 3D Blast was even a decent game. Sonic Adventure, whether it was part 1 or 2, or any variation in between, did not and will never match up to the magic or the caliber of greatness that was the classics I mentioned. They may have been good games to some, heck even great games to even less, but to me they will always be the first big mistake in Sega's attempt at recreating what was once awesome.
I find myself, almost on a weekly basis, telling someone somewhere how the Sonic series was so much better before. I own some of the best Gamecube games there are, including Wind Waker, Resident Evil (remake), Resident Evil 0, SSBM, etc., but I will always and forever stand by my honest word and say that Sonic Mega Collection is by far the best $40 I've spent towards my Gamecube.

Let's start with Old School Sonic.
I used to have a Sega, but then it broke on me. I had both the Sonic games that were released for the Sega, and I would play them ALL of the time. Dr. Eggman never gets old. I would play through those levels over and over again, and beat the game countless times. Just sit there in front of my Sega with that controller in my hand spinning around and running full speed toward the finish. I used to know where every obstacle is, and I could clear a stage faster than anybody I know could. I would know just where to jump, stop and go slower, or whatever else you need to do to complete the stage, and it always worked perfectly, and that stage would be gone, just like that. Dr. Eggman was also pretty fast to beat, as well. Not very hard in his many occurrences.
Remember how I said I would move on from Old School Sonic? Well I lied, because most of the Sonic games they make now suck. Sonic Unleashed is absolutely horrid. Sonic Heroes wasn't that bad, though.

I disagree about Sonic Unleashed. Sure, the night time levels are horrible, but I thought the day time levels did a good job attempting to get back to the old-school Sonic style. You're right about Sonic Heroes though. I thought the Chaotix levels were especially memorable.

Well, you're right, the day time levels were better than the night time. I didn't like the whole werehog thing at all...
Most of the Sonic Heroes levels were pretty good, aside from the ones with the fat purple cat guy.

The old sonic games were really good.
As for the 3d sonic games, well its not perfect but i still like it.
Not too long ago i decided to buy sonic and the black knight. IGN gave it a 3.9 but still i bought it, its not the first time i ignored IGN's ratings.
Anyway, i kinda liked the game. Sure it has its flaws but i still enjoyed it. They made a good improvement compared sonic and the secrect rings.

I haven't bought it yet. I got Secret Rings when it first came out, and my expectations were quite low, but it was much better that I expected it to be.
On a side note, I just finished the Final Ending in Shadow the Hedgehog. If you put aside the fact that this game has nothing to do with Sonic, I think it's a bit enjoyable.

Sonic Team has shown that they can make good 3-D Sonic games,so why can't they get back to making them?

It depends on the person itself.
If you rather want a 3-D fast high speed sonic title (like the 2-D versions)
Well i don't know any 3-D sonic title like that, except the daytime missions on Sonic unleased. but the whole wherehog thing messed it up so i decided not to buy it.
Sonic and the black knight has rather a simple gameplay compared to the previous sonic titles. No more one long complicated list of skills like Sonic and the secret rings. There is a level up system but not as long and complicated like secret rings.
Also this time the game is a little longer compared to secret rings, i finished secret rings like within 2 hours.
Also it has some cool extra's like collecting items, and those items can be used as equipment or materials for forging/making weapons.
Those weapons can be used by shadow/lancelot, knuckles/gawain, blaze/percival.
yes you can play these characters in some missions.
as for sonic, he only uses one weapon but instead he has 3 different styles. (speed, power, balanced).

I really do not like modern Sonic. Now before you disagree, make sure you have played the Genesis, Master System( yes there was a Sonic game on the Master System), Game Gear, Sega CD etc. games.
When I was a kid, I used to play Sonic at my aunts house alllll the time. I just loved how fast the game speed was, and how it was almost like a platformer, and a racing game combined.
Sonic 1, 2 ,3 is Sonic at its best. When these games were released, they were ground breaking in the processing speed that allowed Sonic to run so fast. The level design and 2D aspect was great for me. I also loved playing Sonic 3 with the Sonic and Knuckles add-on. Now, look at the modern Sonic games. 3-D veiw, different stages etc. Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast, or Gamecube) is really where Sonic changed In my mind. If you ask me, It just didnt feel like a Sonic game. The whole Sonic 1,2,3 appeal just was lost and it took on more of a 3-D adventure role. I mean sure its fun, but its just not Sonic as I know it. (If your more of a classic gamer, you will understand what I mean)
When I think of Sonic, I think of the classic games, and I really think Sonic was a revolution in gaming. I mean there is many cartoons, games, action figures, and the modern gamers are attracted to it as well. I just wish everyone could play Sonic like it used to be so they could understand when people say "its just not the same."

Well most of the sonic game now a days arent as fun as they used to i didnt really like sonic heroes i got bored of it really fast, i find sonic3 & knuckles really fun i cant stop playing some times. the ones on the ds are ok and the ones on the wii are just a joke sonic unleashed was alright i just didnt like the werhog thing.
SA1 and SA2 are just gold, SA2 i think is the best 3D sonic game yet. i wish sonic team would make the games they used to, sonic and the black knight come on is that the best you can do like this is a sad i game where you are a really fast hedgehog with a sword like wtf. i cant take these games.

well, there is one fact, sega is being stubborn and not listening to the fans.
Now the fans want a 3-D sonic game that can really have that old classic feeling like the 2-D games. They can achieve it but for some reason they always experiment new engines. Its really weird. Experimenting is not bad, but still to listen to the fans is important. At least nintendo tries that with their own 1st party titles.
So with sonic and the black knight, finnaly i have collected all items and weapons. Now normally you can trade items with wifi. But its not impossible to gain all items witout trading. In fact, you will figure out that some items can only be gained in certain levels and not randomly.
One other sonic game i also enjoyed is Sonic raiders Zero gravity. I never played Sonic Raiders before and it was getting bad reactions, but i kinda liked zero gravity. But i would liked it better if it had more levels and a online wifi race rather then regestering and downloading ghost data record. But hey, at least sega takes the trouble to actually make use of the wifi. Still this game is nothing compared to Mario kart wii or even F zero GX.

I don't understand it either. Why do they keep adding new elements and twists to the gameplay? I think it was fine the way it was SA2.
I think Sonic Riders is one of the better Sonic spin offs. Personally, I didn't care for Sonic Spinball or Robitniks Mean Bean Machine, but Sonic riders, the first and the second, proved to be much better than the other spin offs. I would buy the third one if they ever decide to make one.

Well since we are discussing about the sonic games.
Lets talk about the music. To tell you the truth, i think that the music is actually good with the 3-D games. Ok when it was 2-D it had this music melodie kinda thing. when they began 3-D, they made it rock themed soundtracks. Some people might dislike it but i really like the music they make.
Going a little off topic, if i look back at games that sega made and if i look back to the soundtracks, they are really masterpieces. Like Sonic series, Jetset Radio, and also F-Zero GX ect...
And i actually download these soundtracks, because most of them are really good.

Oooh....Sonic the Hedgehog for the Genesis was my very first videogame. And I even got to play it on the original console, what a treat. X3
Anyhoo, I love the 2D ones, form the original to Sonic CD. They have sentimental value to me because they were my favorite series as a kid, and basically the only series that I loyally followed. I really liked some of the 3D ones, but at a certain point I gave up on the series, now I'm a loyal Zelda fan. (Yes, I am looking forward to Spirit Tracks, mind you. XD)
Anyways, I would play the Genesis at my friend's house. He lived across the street from me and I would go over there almost every day to play Sonic 2 with him. I was always Tails and kind of the decoy when it came to the bosses because Tails has infinate lives. We had all these complicated strategies for the bosses, special zones, and just plain finishing the level, at ages 4-5, no less! Fun stuff, and this was basically the pattern that my friend and I followed with every 2D game.
One day, my dad brought home Sega Dreamcast. How I loved that thing, it came with a special blue transparent memory card, one remote control, and two Sonic games: Sonic Shuffle and Sonic Adventure. We later bought Sonic Adventure 2. I love all three of them, and I highly reccomend them to all Sonic fans. I'm not talking about the re-makes for the Gamecube, oh no. Play them on the Dreamcast, it's a totally different experience, espically in the Chao Gardens. Anyhoo, those were the best games I've ever played. Later, my youngest sister got a GAmecube for her birthday, and seeing that my discs for the Dreamcast were all scratched and busted (I never took good care of them when I was young.) my dad bought us the Gamecube versions of those games. Sadly, I am yet yo find a transfered version of Sonic Shuffle, I loved that game despite how hard it was. It was always better than Mario Party in my opinion. (then again, I've only played 4 on so I never got the N64 experience. =P)
Holy....ok, I'll stop. That was much more than I expected to type out. I'll be back to this topic later to continue my thoughts. XD

I they did an excellent job with the music as well. Crush 40 did an excellent job fitting the mood in each game with their songs. Some favorites of mine are Live and Learn (SA2 theme), What I'm Made Of (Sonic Heroes, Metal Overlord battle), I Am (Shadow the Hedgehog theme) and All Hail Shadow (Shadow the Hedgehog credits), and all of them except the latter are by Crush 40. And those are just the main songs. Most of the Stage music was excellent as well.
But some of it really sucked. Tails' and Amy's theme from SA were...... just bad.

Okay, onto whatever I wanted to say. I grew up with alot of the older Sonic games. When I was under the impression that Knuckles was cool, everyone else was all over Shadow. Eventually I got a demo of Sonic Heroes and got the impression that he was better that Knux. Then I thought E-102 Gamma was cool, then Omega. Then, once Silver became cool, I lost all faith in new sonic games. Silver took what Sonic was, and just blew it. Then came Blaze the cat, then the babylon rogues, then all these uber custom Sonic characters. I thought that Sonic lost it's cool. Now that Metal Sonic is apparently going to be in Mario & Sonic at the winter olympics, I feel like the Sonic Team is coming to their senses.
So now I want your opinion on all these new characters in Sonic. Pleas give reasons why and most of all, do not flame others for their opinions.
EDIT: I don't really think of Big the Cat as a Sonic character. Especially how hard his levels were, how stupid he is, and overall, he didn't fit in.
Sonic-- Extremely fast hedgehog
Tails-- Flying Fox
Knuckles-- Gliding echdina that has pointy fists that shoot these red thingies.
Amy-- Love-crazy cat that has a big mallet
E-102-- FRIGGIN' ROBOT WITH LAZERS
Big-- Cat that fishes.
EDIT: Let us not forget how they screw up Sonic himself by making him go from super cool fast hedgehog, to a Final Fantasy hero that can transform into a stupid werehog that spoofs Twilight Princess. Sonic is supposed to be speedy and slick. Final Fantasy and Zelda should be tough and medieval like. I also hated how Sonic Chronicles was an RPG. What does that have to do with Sonic? Sonic should be able to just jump on the enemy all he wants while narrowly avoiding attacks. Not taking turns.

We do already have a thread about Sonic, but I honestly think that this is an important enough topic to have it's own thread (in my view anyway). I think all of these new characters are a big part of what's responsible for the decline in quality of the recent Sonic games. Tails, Knuckles, and Amy were great, I'm all for them appearing in future titles and playing a big role. Let's just pretend that Big the Cat never happened. Shadow and Rouge are awesome too, but I'd rather they be reserved for special games, and not be featured in every title. Then we get to Sonic Heroes, like you mentioned. I'm just barely willing to accept the characters we got there, and for specific reasons: The Chaotix were just plain funny. That was an awesome clash of the personalities there, and I think they should be in future games. Omega, not so much. I guess I could accept him in the future, but meh, it depends. After that, it all goes downhill. Sonic 06 is the absolute worst Sonic game I've ever played, and it trashed Sonic's good name. Silver was a Shadow wannabe, and I thought Blaze didn't really bring anything to the game that I cared about. The Babylon Rouges seemed neccessary for the Sonic Riders games, but I'm really not in favor of a third installment at this point. Chip was cute, but really, they should have but Knuckles in instead of him, because Chip turned out to be kind of boring, just like Blaze.
So yeah, I have a pretty big problem with it too. My advice to Sega from an old school Sonic fan: Stick to the characters everyone loves (Tails, Knuckles, Amy) instead of bringing out boring characters (Silver, Blaze, and to a lesser extent Chip) that no one is going to care about.

There hasn't been a good character invented since the days of Sonic 3/S&K. That is my opinion. In fact, there hasn't been a really, overall good Sonic title released since then, and I think the characters were a big part of that.
First off, playing as most of these characters was no fun. Big the Cat and Amy were worthless in Sonic Adventure, Shadow was okay in Sonic Adventure 2, but he was kinda just a Sonic copy. Then they released Shadow's own game where they tried to make him all "mature", and that was a mistake.
Secondly, the character's attitudes and personality have really killed the series for me lately. Tails is one in particular that I could not stand to set and listen to during Sonic Adventure. Him having a little kids voice with those less than great scripts that he had to say made the game just seem thrown together. They tried to make Sonic "cool", and that has just made him fail. Knuckles has stayed about neutral. He was what I would have expected in Sonic Adventure, and remains my favorite character of the series still. But I'd say they will end up killing his character too, if they haven't already in some of the ones I haven't played.

These are the only characters I am really familiar with.
Sonic- a sweet main character to the series. I've always liked him and have definitely held him as one of my favorite video game characters of all time.
Tails- I always liked playing as him because he can fly!
Knuckles- He was the Badass guy until Shadow came around. I loved playing as him in Sonic & Knuckles.
Shadow- Awesome addition to the series. I like the "Bass" feeling to him. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, Bass is a character in Megaman who was created by the evil guy but Bass has his own agenda. Shadow was created by Robotnik's father or grandfather or something, but he doesn't listen to Robotnik and he goes and does his own thing.
Dr. Robotnik- I hate it when he's called Dr. Eggman or just Eggman. They should just stick with calling him Dr. Robotnik (like the true, old fans know and love).
Silver- He was cool, but I agree that he kind of destroyed what Sonic was about. The Sonic The Hedgehog game that first came out for the elite systems (360, PS3) was kind of a dissappointment. Silver was like a psychic user? Lame. Stick with super cool/fast Hedgehogs. We don't need witches in the series. The graphics for that game were AMAZING though.
Other than that I know the side characters a little bit but after Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, the series has gone WAY downhill. I don't even bother to play any of the games after that.

SA2:B is one of my favorite games for GCN. Surely I'm not the only one who likes it... Not only does it have an awesome story line and great gameplay, but it also has one of the best side games. That of course would be the Chao World. I've spent hours raising chao, and infact, I'm raising a Sonic Chao as I'm typing this.
Anyways what do you guys think about it?

I really like this game. The levels were fun and challenging but I loved Chao world the most. I mostly like my Hero Chaos but I still care for the Evil ones. I've beat the evil storyline but haven't gotten around to beating the last level of the hero one.

This was the last good Sonic game that was made. Ever since this game, the series has gone way down hill. They either need to make another game like SA2:B or they need to go back to the original side scrolling games that were so much fun. The stuff they are doing now just doesn't appeal to anyone anymore.

This in my opinion, Is by far the best sonic game ever made, I loved the Chao's, Unfortunately for me my brother tooks his GCN and y save file with it. I would love for Nintendo to release this game on the VC, I spent hours raising a Chao at a time with Sonic or Shadow seeing as they were my 2 favourite characters.
If they did bring this game out again on the VC it would be a top priority for me to get. It would be a great game to add back to my collection.

I used to be addicted to this game. I loved everything about it. It was pretty challenging for me back when I was younger, which made it more fun to play. Not to mention the story, like you've previously mentioned. I really enjoy the first level, earthboarding through the city streets was so entertaining. Though the boss battles would have to be my favorite parts. They were really fun and creative. (Spoilers, for those of you who haven't played.) Especially the Biolizard/Ultimate Life Form. The final boss would be a daily ritual for me. When I came home from school, the first thing I did was stop it from crashing into the Earth.
Another thing I really liked was Chao World. That was great. I used to love raising them, competing in competitions, etcetera. It was especially fun when they reached their peak, getting to go to the heaven and hell realms.

Not only do I think this was the last good Sonic game, I find it to be the best out of all the Sonic games. It had such an amazing storyline, as well as gameplay, and while the graphic weren't great, that doesn't affect it at all. It's also one of the few games in general that has a good multiplayer, especially the rails ones. I also agree that removing Chao from the series was a real bad move, and I'm absolutely up for a SA3 if they do it right.

In my opinion this was the last really good Sonic game.
This is also the game that made me a fan of the Sonic series.
This game also was the first Sonic game that had a interesting story to it.
We also get Shadow and Rouge(two of my favorite Sonic characters).
This game also had the Chao Garden where you could rise and level up your pet Chao.
I also like the different levels for the characters, speed levels for Sonic and Shadow, the ones where Tails and Eggman ride around in there battle robots, and the treasure hunting levels with Knuckles and Rouge.

I, like so many other people here, agree that this was the last "amazing" Sonic title, and is by far the best of the 3D titles. I was so hooked on it when I was younger. I thought the whole plot itself was amazing, and rather complex and absorbing compared to the 2D Sonic titles I had played. I thought all of the levels played out very well, and it actually got HARD during the final levels of both sides. The music, for the most part was amazing. I'll never forget the City Escape theme and Eggman's theme. I was surprised that some mentioned the Chao. I actually thought I was the only one that got insanely addicted to those things. I remember spending hours on the Cube trying to get a Sonic chao, and I never could quite get it right. The karate especially amused me, with all of the funny little punches and kicks you could do.
It's just sad that Sonic proves with this game how good he can be in 3D, and yet the most recent titles suck pretty bad. Instead of all the quirks we've been getting (Werehog, Sonic with a Sword, Silver the time traveler) they really need to look at what made people love SA2, and create Sonic Adventure 3.

Well first of all the Dreamcast version is better. Especially if your talking about chaos, because on the Dreamcast you could save your chao on the memory cards. I'm surprised that nobody has really mentioned the Dreamcast version since its the same thing. And in my mind, Sonic Adventure was what changed Sonic forever, its just wasn't the same as the others. If you play the classic ones you would know what I mean. It was a great game but it was completely different from what I classified as Sonic.

You could do this on GameCube as well. I once needed to make space on my memory card, so I deleted my SA2 data, but before doing so, I gave all my Chao's to my friend.

But the Dreamcast version lacked the two player mode, which I would call the best two player a Sonic titles has ever had. Recent multiplayer Sonic games have been pathetic. They really just need to bring back the Sonic vs Shadow races that made everything so cool. Add in Metal Sonic again (forget Amy), and you've got a pretty good multiplayer race right there. Stages made it even better. City and Escape was so cool for me at the time, and that Radical level provided a nice mix of difficulty against others. In defense of the Dreamcast version, I hear that it had a Chao Editor, which allowed for Knuckles, Tails, and Rouge chaos to be created.

Wow, I'm surprised no one mentioned the better half (well, technically third, if you count Fleetway) of the Sonicverse. The Archieverse. Yes, the Archie Comic book series Sonic the Hedgehog. :D
I'm an Archie-Sonic Nut and proud to prove it.
While I've sold (in the process of selling) all the old Sonic games over the years, the only one I've held onto is the new one, Sonic Unleashed. And yes, the Werehog was garbage, but everything else was just like the old games. I loved it.
If you want to see the games I'm selling go here: http://boomtrex.forumcircle.com/viewtopic.php?t=679
But, while Unleashed was one of the best in many years, I still love the feel of SA for the dreamcast. Nostalgia how sweet the sound.
I'll compile a list of the best Sonic games:
StH (Genesis)
StH2 (Genesis)
StH3&K (Genesis) [Note: Not StH3 or S&K, but BOTH together]
SA (Dreamcast) [The GC version was good, but not better than the original)
SA2 (Dreamcast) [Again, the DC version beats the GC version)
SR (Nintendo DS)
SU (Xbox360) [The Wii version is garbage, and the PS3 just sucks in general...]
While I like the storyline for StH06, it doesn't place with the best, plus all the glitches and too realistic of humans.
ShtH was fun, but short-lived. Plus, guns shouldn't be wielded by hedgehogs, namely emo ones. XD
SH was fun, but not good enough to place in the tops.
And all the spinoffs suck, namely Sonic Riders and S&tSR

You probably already knew that I am a long time fan of sonic. The 2D titles were better, but some of the 3D ones like Sonic adventure, etc. were very good. Todays such as TBK, TSRs, suck completely. I I will always be a fan of sonic.

The most recent game I loved was Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic Heroes was decent but after it was mostly garbage. I hate that big sonic game for the 360 named after the first game of the series, like its some sort of successor or sign of goodness or whatever. Well, I'll tell you right now, I've played it and it's none of those. Everyone I know thinks that this game is awesome. I asked them what was more awesome in it than all the previous games. They all answered the same; "Silver is a magic psy-guy (that's how we refer to superhumans who perform arcane and/or psychic nature time/space bending powers) (Sonic doesn't need that stuff), theres a cooler bad guy named Mephiles (as if Shadow isn't enough of an anti-hero they decided to recolor him with a different voice. How is that "cooler"?), theres a human in the game besides Eggman (ITS ROBOTNIK. GET IT RIGHT. Anyway that "human" who is in love with Sonic shows that SEGA might be insinuating bestiality in the game to appeal to the Sonic Porn Drawers), and the graphics are WAY better!!! (...I already made a thread on this.) Did any of those "better things" have anything to do with gameplay? Nope. Just "better" characters and "better" graphics. I think SEGA is starting to become a second SONY with Square outlooks. I stick with the old games on Mega Collection (including Ristar and Flicky).

I would like to take this opportunity to unleash my fury against the putrid Sonic 06.
I remember reading about this game before it came out. It was going to be epic. There was no subtitle, just SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, which meant this game was going to be something special and unique, just like it's predecessor with the same name. Except this time, it was going to be big and mature. Eggman, now with a different look that actually made him look real and mean, wasn't joking around. He was out for blood this time. Heck, the back of the case said THIS TIME, SPEED WON'T BE ENOUGH. This game was going to push its characters to the extreme. Of course, Nintendo wasn't cool enough for this revolutionary game, nor did its system have the graphic capability that was needed to impress the mature crowd they thought they would appeal to. No, this could only be on the PS3 and 360. This game was too epic for anything else. Sonic had a human girl friend, Shadow had his guns and motorcycle, and Silver was a psychic hedgehog from the future. This surely would be the best Sonic ever right?
No, not at all. The series tried way too hard to be something it isn't. They seem to be doing that a lot lately. Adding so many unnecessary characters and game play elements, that what made the original games so fun is drowned and forgotten. Instead, it becomes another faceless game with nothing special about it. This game won't go down as Sonic's prime title, like it was hyped to be. It'll go down as his lowest and most embarrassing moment ever.

Amen. Sonic Adventure 2 was one of the last good sonic games. Sonic Adventure was amazing. To this day I love it. I also have Sonic Mega Collection and a lot of other games.
That happens to every game these days. Banjo Kazooie is a big example. You see 10 years ago it had only a few characters, and no humans. The problem with today is that game creators are adding non-fiction things like people, cars, guns, etc. in games that didn't have those things back then. The only good thing about BK Nuts & Bolts was that they re-released the originals on the 360.

Like when Sonic the Hedgehog was only sonic and his gang facing Robotnik and his robots with nothing else in the series? And then, out of no where, Sonic is all of the sudden on Earth fighting side by side with humans.

You know, I didn't have a problem with humans in Sonic Adventures 1 and 2. Seeing as they were just kind of there with no story relevance at all. I guess saving actual humans from the destruction of earth could be called more epic that just saving woodland animals, and I can understand that. But when one of them actually becomes a main character and love interest for the main HEDGEHOG character, I think they've gone too far. Sonic Unleashed pushed this too, with that stupid Professor Pickle character, but just not as far thankfully.
As for how Sonic got to earth in the first place, I have no idea. If anyone has ever watched the Sonic X show (which is actually quite good), I think they provide a fine explanation to how talking super animals get to the human world along with a power hungry super genius.

I've been watching Sonic X through again on Youtube, and I must say for it being the only Sonic franchise that has brought so many noobs to the games, it's quite good. It perfectly explains the plothole Sega created when they went from S3&K to SA.
However, no matter how sucky StH06 was, I loved how it was set-up. To me, even playing through GRAPHICS THAT COULD'VE BEEN ON THE WII (hint, hint), ahem, I loved how it was set up like the Adventure games. Separate Stories, Different gameplay for each character, etc.
But, no matter how good the games are, the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series from Archie will always top the games. I should make an Archie Sonic topic. Well, maybe not.
Ken Penders did an amazing job with explaining how Robotnik became Eggman. Amazing. But, he also screwed up the franchise through Issue #159, and everything is being patched up by the total-dude-of-awesomeness, Ian Flynn right now. He's written issues 160-203, 204, 205, 206, 207, and Sonic Universe #1-6, 7, 8, 9, 10 so far, and they've been the best issues I've ever read of the series.

Gah, I know the feeling. Come to think of it, I never got all the chaos emeralds in that game, and it's my favorite 2D Sonic of them all..... At least the Oil Ocean boss was pretty easy. Non-poisonous, constant jumping allowed oil makes it pretty simple.

There's a code you can put in at the Level Select that lets you turn into Super Sonic (which basically gives you the Chaos Emeralds). The code is, 04,02,01,06.
But on that topic, I have gotten the Chaos Emeralds for all Sonic games. I really do just dominate classic Sonic since I've played it my whole life. Some of my friends just set and watch me play sometimes because I know where everything is, the layout of the special levels, etc., and can do all these things, but it comes from years of playing. I never really have trouble dying on those games either. I very rarely ever die.

Dragon Ball Z - Super Saiyan
Yeah, both were based on the same Japanese legend about some "Golden Warrior". That, or DBZ was based on this legend, then Sonic followed from DBZ. It wouldn't be the only time there have been Sonic/DBZ similarities. Here's a few more from SonicRetro .org
-Seven Chaos Emeralds, seven DragonBalls
-Super Sonic, Super Saiyan
-Kami's Lookout, Floating Island.
-Goku could fly with his tail, and Tails flies with his tail
-Goku and other DBZ characters have super speed, and Sonic characters do.
-Perfect Chaos, Perfect Cell
-Characters named after foods.
-Vegeta getting tricked into doing evil things, Knuckles gets tricked into doing evil things
Of course I don't know a lot about DBZ because I never did like it much or get into it. But I'm sure some people will find these similarities pretty interesting.

See the avatar? From the first issue of the first Knuckles comic. Those were epic.
I stopped following the Sonic comic around issue 100. I'd started around issue 25, and I was enthralled; but after endgame, the comic had absolutely no direction. I don't know how well it recovered. The Adventure-focused comics were alright, but they weren't as good as, say, the Mecha Madness issues.
Which brings me to the Knuckles comics. Almost all of them were heartfelt, enthralling, and completely original. There were some cliches, sure, but I felt like the focus was squarely on the characters, and I always wanted to see what dilemma they'd find themselves in next. Oddly enough, it really picked up during and after "Reunions." I'm not sure what issue number that was, but it's precisely when I realized how good the characters were, and how much I cared about threats to them.
Sonic was good prior to Eggman's death (and starting around issue 20, because before then it was too silly), and decent enough around the Adventure issues. Knuckles was ten times better, which is saying something.
Unfortunately, my mom threw away all issues of the comics, so I got nothing. Bummer.
