I searched the forums and was surprised I did not find this thread already. Iīve just ordered copies of Ghostīs īn Goblins and Super Ghosts and Ghouls, two games that are supposed to be on the "harder" side. I owned a copy of Ghostīs īn Goblins when I was a kid and it is the hardest game Iīve ever tried. I wasnīt even close to beating it. Iīve looked around the internet and it seems the series Ninja Gaiden is even supposed to be harder!
Whatīs the hardest game you ever played?
(And for you who think AoL is hard, on the list that says Ninja Gaiden is the hardest AoL was number 22 ;))

If it is a game for the NES I believe it was nr 3 on the list! Unfortunately I havenīt been able to try it, must be awesome (I love toads)!
This is the list I am refering to:

For me it is AoL. I dont play a whole lot of games though. But this one is just very hard for me. I know I could finish it if I really sat down and played it and maybe I will some day. Heavy barrel for NES is also a really hard one for me.

Mega Man Network Transmission for Game cube was really hard. I spent my first 3 years
trying to get to fireman and the next year trying to beat him. Just awhile ago i beat him and now I need to fight Gutsman and when I was fighting him, it turns out i had nothing good to fight him with

The Ninja Gaiden games are difficult via a combination of good difficulty and pain in the butt programming flaws such as instantly respawning enemies. That is probably what gets me the most.

I'm not good at thinking of hard games, but I'd have to go with Final Fantasy IV. I had to really level up in that game a lot. Get my people to level up by going out and fighting all of the time, and the final boss still seems nearly invincible.

Battletoads is definitely up there. I was never able to get past the speeder bike level. That was just brutally vicious, especially to a 10 year old.
At a time, AoL was a tough one for me as well. I've got better and better as time's progressed, but again, as a 10 year old trying to beat that thing, I often got stuck looking for the hammer. Once I passed that part, everything else was just nasty. It's like the first couple of temples held your hand a bit, then they just kicked you out a door into the harsh world and said "Good Luck!"
F-Zero GX was a tough one also. The overwhelming sense of speed was really hard for someone to just pick up and play. Turns were really tight, and the enemy AI could be brutal. It's still probably my favourite racing game out there though.
Although the gameplay wasn't brutal, the original Metroid's lack of a map made for some tough times. Thank you Nintendo Power for easing up the difficulty on that one!

ninja gaiden black is rediculous. the grunts are even hard to kill in that game. the boss battles are fun as hell but you have to be so careful because you can get hurt pretty easily and they hard to approach. the random ninjas you fight on the street are nearly as skilled as you are. there is no easy mode either... its basically made for those of us who are fast thinkers and can button mash like no other. thats the hardest game ive ever played in my entire life!
by the way... 900th POST!!!

Funny that you mentioned this cause I was just going to bring it up: Metroid! The original!! I donīt remember having extremly rough experiences with this game as a child but I recently started to play it (quite some years later) and itīs not a piece of cake! Some things are really hard to find, like the energy tanks and the varia suit. I guess some people try to find Kraid at an early point but they are up for huge trouble unless they first find the varia suit and also the boots, the ice beam etc. I really understand if people get frustrated by this game cause I really start to reach that point  (I canīt seem to remember where the things are hidden anymore)

I know a few people who got themselves some grid paper and made maps for themselves.

It was HELLA HARD.
I kept dying every five seconds.

I know I mentioned in this thread that Ghosts īn Goblins was the most difficult game I had ever played, we surely had something in common about that.
Iīve been looking around the internet for lists and threads about hard games. For the NES for instance two games are often mentioned, they are: Silver Surfer and Ikari Warriors. If you thought that you died a lot in GnG, try those games, I did  (Ghosts īn Goblins doesnīt seem that hard anymore)

Ghost's n' Goblins and Super Ghosts'n'Ghouls are pretty hard, along with Ninja Gainden
Metroid's hardness dies after you play it for some days.
Mega Man games can also be pretty hard, as well as AoL, but none of them can be compared to the ultimate nightmare of videogames: The Nes Silver Surfer...
The game is a huge pain in the butt, a completely frustrating videogame, I hate it with all my strenght, as well as I love it for being so Hard

Okay, seriously. Ghosts 'n' Goblins is definitely horribly hard, but Cybernoid is definitely harder. You really have no idea how hard that game is until you play it. Silver Surfer and Cybernoid are both horribly hard games, but Cybernoid is certainly harder. I haven't had any game give me as much trouble as Cybernoid has. I'm sure many others will come to mind, but Cybernoid definitely takes the award for the hardest.

Ninja Gaiden, the original, drove me insane with its difficulty. Of course, I was much younger when I played it, but I'm sure it would still give me a hard time even today.
A lot of people had trouble with the G n' G games, but I never found them to be that hard... more annoying than anything, really.

Interesting, I actually never heard of Cybernoid before but will definitely look that up! I say thank you my friend for bringing that game up, Iīll try it if and when possible :)

This is also interesting. Iīm playing through Ninja Gaiden (the original) now for my first time, Iīve reached the last boss and it didnīt take me long. Whenever I start the game I can reach him in less then an hour (maybe even in less then 45 minutes). I would certainly say that Ghosts īn Goblins is harder although I havenīt beaten Ninja Gaiden yet. But Ninja Gaiden 3 seems extremly hard on the other hand, this since you only have 5 "continues" D:

For me it's the Japanese Transformers game for the NES. I could'nt even make it past the first level because once you take a hit, you lose one of your three lives.

I Wanna Be The Guy. It's not a video game, it's a freeware download game for PC. But it is just like AAAAAAAH! The Let's Player on Youtube has to curse 5 billion times.

Hmm, well.. I thought long and hard about this... as a matter of fact I was thinking about it while I was writing these sentences... Major League Baseball for the NES was hard for me... I remember that the only time I would even play is if I had some "Big League Chew" gum.. thinking it would help my game.. I'd also wear my Texas Rangers cap and jersey.. But I'd still not be able to hit the ball... and it seemed no matter what I pitched it would be hit out of the park.. I think the game was haxored..

Ninja Gaiden...
Yeah, remember playing through the first level, how much of hell it was only to find out....THAT WAS ONLY A TUTORIAL LEVEL!
Yeah the REAL fun is on Lvl1! Good luck my friends, and yet, I can't stop playing it :3
Shinobi
Yet another one that needed dedication and patience, a really good game and such but watch out, the ninjas will come at you outta nowhere man! Dx
Ikaruga
We all love shooters, that's awesome, yeah, until one comes across Ikaruga, this little merciless game will put you through ell with its many different color shields and bullets, change the colors according to the bullets or you WILL die, fast fingers man xD
Silver Surfer
Okay so, this game was hard, very hard for only one reason: EVERYTHING KILLS YOU. The walls, the enemies (in one hit), too much stuff is flying at you from everywhere, its horrible. I'd say it was too much, bad game I even dare to call it.
Battle Toads
Amazing game, but yet again, hard as hell. Not too many people have gone to the end without a GameGenie and I admit...neither have I xD The game is good and its fun, but really, the 2 player mode sucks. Friendly fire man, friendly fire...

I wanna be the guy. If you do not want to scream your mind out at the unfairness of this game, don't even try. I got to the third screen before i quit. DON'T DO IT!

Hmm...
NES:Final Fantasy (I have trouble getting gold because the enemies take a while and usually kill one of my players which results in a visit to the clinic. This requires the gold.)
SNES:a Link to the Past (Some of the puzzles are boring and I end up not playing the game for two months)
N64:Majora's Mask (It gets frustrating with all the resets you have to do and game overs just add to it)
GC:Super Mario Sunshine (Some of these jumos are ridiculous in those levels when you can't use FLUDD)
Wii: Wii Play (The sensory of the Wiimote in Billiards is awful)
Silver Surfer

The Angry Video Game Nerd reviewed that. So you can dare to call it bad all you want.

My opinion on the hardest games:
Metroid 2 Echos: the enviroment was confusing, all of the puzzles made you go crazy and boss battles were the hardest ever, you had to try them at least three times to finally beat them and you always went in circles.
Hardest Game Ever Meter
5/5
Star Wars Lego Series: I have never completed any of them on 100%,
there was at least a zillion collectables to get (before you got 100% complete) and you had to always do all the missions over and over to get the collectables in them.
Hardest Game Ever Meter

Why has no one said SMB2, the original one of course. The last level in particular was horrendous.

I really, really, disagree with this. Star Wars the Lego Series was exceedingly easy. If you were playing with just one person, you could have one character store all the lego studs while the other fought, and switch between them whenever you got to a battle or started collecting studs. (at least on the pc version)
I found that it was usually obvious where collectables were hidden, but that's just me. I'll admit it was annoying playing through a second time...

Lost Levels? Oh jeez. That is the exact reason I like the american SMB2. Why is LL so hard? Normally if a game is hard, that's not why it's bad. But in LL's case it is. Thank you for mentioning it.
