this can be one you've seen, not one you've actually battled.
I have to say a boss named Mushisihemi futari. Ever hear of it? it's from some japanese arcade game.
He shoots mmillions of purple lasers at you. He takes a couple minutes to beat, and of course he has an impossible yto dodge attack.

Hm, let's see, I've fought some really hard bosses, though they're from more modern games.
First, I'd probably say the last boss of Final Fantasy IV. Never beat him.
Second, I'd probably say a pretty rough boss was Yggdrasil from Tales of Symphonia.
The only one that comes to mind right now would be the Shadow Queen from Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door. Unless you level up your characters to really high levels, you're only gonna beat that battle by bonuses. Really hard one for me.

Whoo boy. I barely survived that one. Had to use Sweet Feast a LOT. I actually didn't use any other special abilities. Had to save my Star Power for Sweet Feast. >_<
But I'd say the hardest boss for me is Dr. Wily in Megaman 7. It's... rough. To say the least.

Hardest? I have no clue! But I never managed to beat Mike Tyson in the legendary boxing game for the NES. So I go with him (guess it can be wrong to call him a boss though, but he´s still an opponent). But if I would have had more time to figure him out, maybe he wouldn´t be that difficult? Interesting thread this one, I will follow it with greatest interest :)

Pick any fighter. There is a good chance that that final boss was made to be cheap and just plain evil.
M. Bison in Street Fighter II for example.

The final boss of MK3. I swear... it does not matter what difficulty level I have it set on... I cant beat him >< It just is way to hard for me.

I've only played a fairly limited number of games, but the hardest boss I've faced so far is Earth Mimicry, the final boss of Sin and Punishment. It showers meteors onto the real Earth, and you have to shoot the meteors so that they are deflected back to the boss. Even on easy mode I can't beat it. The rest of the game isn't exactly a cakewalk either.

I found Doc Ock in Spider-man2 to be a hard boss.
His tentacles moved way too fast,to avoid them.
I'm sure he's not the hardest boss of all time, but he's the hardest boss I'vd face.

I agree. I probably wouldn't have beaten her if I didn't have a guide. I also think Bowser for Paper Mario 1 was really hard. He would recover life so many freakin times. I couldn't even beat him. I also think Gyorg was hard. I don't have much of a wide span of bosses to chose form. I've never even played metroide or Final Fantasy, bu I want to sometime.

Marluxia on Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories. He was easy on the gameboy, but on the PS2, he kicked my butt over and over again.

LOL!
I beat him the first time! The mech nobody he summons was cake too. But, on the topic of Re:Chain of Memories, the final fight with Ansem is brutal. No heal cards, no magic, no nothing. Just a King Mickey card that always gets trumped...

Strange. Seems we are inverted. I found the battle with Ansem quite easy in comparison to the ladyman Marluxia. I seriously used to think he was a girl. I love the flower petals. xD

Ive seen this fight on youtube and it looks ridiculously impossible lol, I dont understand how anyone could possibly beat that thing. I wish I had that game to I could go against it.
Out of every boss I've ever battled, the hardest one was Gruntilda from Banjo-Kazooie by far. It took me over a year to be able to beat her.... without cheats. I could get up to the flying part easily, and most times get up to unlocking the Jinjonator, but I would always die before finishing that part.

I found every boss in LOZ hard, and I also had a lot of trouble with the final boss of story mode on super smash bros brawl

I haven't beat a bunch of games, but I do say that I, in my experiences, have a tie.
1. Giant Bowser from Yoshi's Island (GBA Version). I remember beating him when I was 8 or 9. It took me weeks to beat that guy, and that was before I learned you could go online to look up game help. So, for that one week, I just got slaughtered.
2. Bowser from Super Mario World (GBA Version). Oh my God, this guy flat out was evil. It took me a few days to kill him, yet he was not nice at all. I would always die on a lot of scenes in there. I mean, the castle was ridiculously easy. I felt better once I beat him, for it took me around three days to beat him, and this was only a few months ago.
Of course, Tabuu from Super Smash Bros. Brawl was flat out evil (The wave attack was a one-hit KO).

I'm too lazy to whip out Final Fantasy IV and look for the boss right now, but I have to say the final boss in the game. I still can't beat it. All my characters are above level 85 and I still can't but a scratch on it. Well, I can put a scratch on it, and I use my spells to the best of my ability and my healers, but I still can't manage.
I think it's Cyprus... or Cyrus or something. I can't remember.

The god of destruction in Lost Kingdoms was very difficult. You have to fight him right after defeating Thalnos and if you don't have good cards in your deck, you will fail and you have to start over again. The field where you fight is very small and the god of destruction has very powerful attacks and moves fast.
Another difficult boss is one boss in Bujingai Swordmaster, I can't remember the name, but it's an enormous dragon that kills with only 2 hits D:

One of the Hardest bosses I have ever had a fight against is Tabuu on Intense, He was a hard one, Mainly when he would use the 1HKO attack, Also I am not sure if any one here played this game but the final boss from Jak 2, He was annoying and it did not help I had no ammo for the chain gun I had or the other pwnage weapon (The Peacekeeper I think), In the end I did it with the Shotgun and Rifle mixed and kicked his butt

Definitely the Shadow Queen from Paper Mario TTYD. She would attack you with really powerful attacks, then she would become invincible for a certain amount of time, and then she refills her HP! She really pissed me off and is certainly the hardest of all time.

I thought both of those bosses were super easy. The SNES version of SMW's final boss was harder because even if you had the cape or flower, you'd still become small Mario when hit.

For me it's Luna from Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters on PSP. The battle starts off with you being chased by Luna in a plane with the actual fight taking place on a small platform. Often she fires red beams that I can't even see which finishes me off. I also can't view my health for the entire fight. Once you fall off, you have to start the entire battle over again plane chase included. :(

I can't think of the absolute hardest one ever, but here's a couple that I remember losing a lot of lives on over the years.
Bowser in the original SMB. With the fire, the jumping, the hammers... if you're small, it's even harder, and seems the more you hesitate, the more you shoot yourself in the foot for getting a hole to jump through to hit the axe. If you've got fire-power still, it's a cake walk.
Quickman in Mega Man 2. If you don't have Flashman's power, he's quite annoying to fight. If you DO have Flashman's power, and then you die, it's then extremely annoying to build up enough energy to use it again on Quickman.
I think I've played these both enough now to get the hang of them, but back in the day, with no walkthroughs, or FAQs, or Youtube videos, or tool assisted runs... well, you get the idea... these guys were really hard to deal with.
i would have to say...
Pixy from ace combat zero (AC is a flight simulator) is the hardest boss. The only way to kill him is to shoot missiles in to his front while he is shooting back.
he got me 10 times:(

Pretty much anything from Partners in Time. That game was designed for masochists.
I found Manhandla in LoZ way too freaking hard, but once I left, got my hearts up, and collected some rupees for arrows, I won with a quarter-heart left and 3 rupees. Freaking nuts.
I also found Aletheia or whatever in Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 really tough, but that was because I was doing it in an actual moving car, multiplying the difficulty tenfold.
And I still got an S-rank. I rock hard at UtK 2- at least the normal missions. I can't even begin to get a chance at beating those optional ones at the end. I mean, a five-minute timer, more Kyriaki then ever, and oh, yeah, damage is doubled and vitals are rapidly dropping through the entire thing. I still haven't passed it- it's enough of a boss fight for me.

Hm... I have a few to add here..
The Boost Ball Guardian from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was considered by far the hardest boss in the game, along with the Spider Ball Guardian.
Llednar from Final Fantasy tactics Advance is also a though guy.
Of course, the Shadow Queen from PMTYD is very hard, if you are not a power leveler or do a long grind.

The hardest i've played was The Cloud of Darkness from final fantasy 3.
The Hardest i've seen would be Yiazmat from final fantasy 12, that thing is immpossible with 50,000,000 HP and if im right you can only hit 9999, so the battle could take hours at the least. Ok so mabye Yiazmat isn't tecnicly a final boss but in the Guinness book of world records it's stated as the most powerful monster im the final fantasy series.

Hmm... in Zelda games, or in any of them?
In Zelda games, I'm not sure because none of them have been TOO hard. Here are the candidates, though:
1. Dark Link from Zelda II.
2. Wart from Majora's Mask.
3. Bongo-Bongo from Ocarina of Time.
4. Jalhalla from Wind Waker.
If you mean ever, then I'm pretty sure I know the boss, because I've just spent more time on him than on any other boss.
Jegran from Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.
The main reason he's hard is because you have to move in all six possible directions, deal with slow lock on, and yank the Wiimote while trying to dodge an arm in four stages, one of which also forces you to dodge four cannons. It's like Bongo-Bongo on steroids.

I thought that the water temple boss in OoT was pretty challenging the first time you played the game. I also tought that Zant was way challenging the first time, until you figured out what you needed to do.

The most difficult boss of any game for me, would have to be Gruntilda/HAG 1 from Banjo Tooie in Replay Mode, which is basically impossible to accomplish.

I would have to say... the final round of the Challenge Node arena in Bowser's IOnside Story. EVERY SINGLE BOSS YOU FOUGHT SO FAR! And you onl;y have 50 moves to do it! And they are all powered up! I think that they changed it from the japanese version where they had an overpowered Bowser. i am not sure. is it possilble top beat them?
Edit: Now that i think of it, i think that Charizard from the First pokemon Ranger is also quite hard to beat. All that fire it leaves, it is almost impossible to loop. Then you have to face charizard again later in mission 9!
