View Full Version : Play As Zelda?

What do you think of the idea of playing as Zelda at some point in the next game? I think it's possible that they could do it in some way. I've seen a couple people think up games that have the ability to play as Zelda. (Like me!!) I know I have in a way, where you are Link, but your in Zelda's body. Later in the game you can switch between Link and Zelda's bodies, yet the whole time your actually Link's soul. I also know that Zeldatwilight, in his game idea, has Link and Zelda's soul combined. So you get to play as both of them.
What do you think of playing of Zelda? How would you put it into a game? Would you like to play as Zelda? Would Zelda have other abilities, or would she just have the same items as Link?

I just don't see how this could work. I mean, maybe for a very short time, but still, how would you make it work? What weapons would she use? Light Arrows? Silver Arrows? Other than that, I don't see Zelda using any other weapon. Am I missing something?

Link could use his Item collection and Zelda can use her Spells. just think how big the spells would be making its return. When you use the spells, you play note, LIke OoT.

I guess it would work. But I doubt it would be a success though. People are used to play as Link and I believe a lot of people would get dissapointed. Like Ver-go said maybe for a small part of the game and using spells would be rather fun but never as the main character (I know you did not say that, just want to clarify). But I guess a spin off game could do fine, one with lots of spells and magic and Zelda as the main character :).

this notion of playing as zelda happened once, and it flopped. of course all the CD-i games flopped, so if nintendo did the whole thing it could work.
and yeah zelda would have a bunch of spells, but also a stick:)

I was more thinking that you would play as Link and Zelda. Sorda like the command melody in WW, but you just switch between them with a touch of a button/use of an item. I think Link and Zelda would just share an inventory, but Zelda could do some things Link couldn't, and Link could do some of the things Zelda couldn't, but they would work together.

I guess I was a bit harsh in my other post. Well, we have seen how it can work in WW (but the command aspect would be a bit annoying if you put it too far). In TP it worked well playing both as a Wolf and Link (but I did not love it) and it could also work with Zelda/Link. And how can you know before you have tried it? I guess weŽll have to see what happens :).

I guess that would work better in a Spin-Off, Like Super Princess Peach...
The game would end being scoffed for being another "The Adventure of Zelda", but, oh well...
Also, I don't think that she would have that much options, while Link has a huge arsenal, Zelda only has three spells, and, pushing it a bit, a bow and arrows.
Maybe playing as Zelda in a prologue in the game would work fine, imo

First off, she'd use her sword that she carries in TP. Second, ever hear of Zelda's Adventure? You get to play as Zelda for the entire game! w00t!
I like the idea of playing as Zelda in a new game, though. Tetra would *also* work just fine. IDk, maybe go on a quest to save Link. (Don't worry, it would be very different from WoG!)

I think it would be fun to play as Zelda and maybe sneak around in Ganons castle kind of like how you play Peach in Paper Mario. I think it is a very fun part of those games. Maybe you could find clues and send them to Link some how or something. I know it sounds all to much like Paper Mario. But I think it would be fun to play as Zelda ^^

I dont think it would make the series any better but they could add something to the game at the end, just so you won't stop playing it at the end of the game, and to add a little fun into the game. But playing as wolf link didn't bother me, but for some reason the idea for playing as zelda isn't as great, well for me.I still think we should control link beacause, it always takes a while to get used to another characters powers, this has no point, you'd get used to it someday.Btw wolf link took me forever to get used to.

I would love to play as Zelda. If Link/Zelda teamed up, it would add an extra layer of depth to the game, as you would have to figure out who would work best in the situation. Playing as Link/Zelda by themselves (as in, they only meet at a few points within the game) would be cool too, and would do better for the story's development.
If Zelda were made a playable character, here's what I think her moveset should be. There are two options.
If they make Zelda a warrior-type character, she would be light and fast. She would run faster than Link and attack quicker, but would be weaker than him. Her main weapon would be dual swords and her items would include a bow, a hookshot (both universal items usable by both characters), Deku Nuts and Hover Boots. I know the last 2 items have been used by Link in previous installments, but they seem to fit Zelda's moveset better.
If they make Zelda a sorceress, she would have no items as her spells would do all the work. She would be the one that has a magic bar. She cannot find hearts; she can only use healing spells and potions, so players will have to keep a close eye on the bar, which can be replenished by finding magic jars. An example of an offensive spell is Din's Fire (standard fire attack), an "assisting" spell (can't think of a better word) would be Farore's Wind (works like the Hover Boots) and a healing spell is Nayru's Love. Zelda could also enchant arrows to make them Light Arrows.
Well, that is my (rather lengthy) idea. What do you think?

I think the warrior idea would never work. But, having said that, I think the sorceress idea is a good one. I really can't picture Zelda with a hookshot, but it's easy to imagine her using the spells that you mentioned and the occasional light arrow if you get in trouble.

I don't really know I feel about this. I want to like the idea...But I don't know. On one hand, I think it would be an awesome change! Zelda would be such an interesting person to play as! But on the other hand it would kind of seem like what Nintendo did with Mario and gave Peach her own game. I have not heard anything else about that game. But knowing how good Nintendo has done with previous loz games, I know that if Zelda was the main character, it would still be a game we all play, we all talk about, and I bet alot of us would enjoy.

See my reply in the "Should Link Die?" topic for my thoughts on this. I have a whole game scenario idea involving a warrioress Zelda and a dead/ghost Link.

I don't know... I think it would kind of change the feel of Zelda a bit much for me. Perhaps if you played as her during a brief portion or certain moments of the game, sort of in the style of Kafei from Majora's Mask, as well as Medli and Makar from Wind Waker. I think something like this could be a good idea.
I suppose actually playing as her could be alright. As long as they did it right (and I know Nintendo could,) then it could be fun. I can't say I'd prefer it, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy it.
Personally, I think Zelda should stay as an NPC... I'd rather see a new hero replace Link than see Zelda as the main character for a whole game, or even a large portion. But that's just me.
Maybe is has to do with the fact that Zelda has always been a character, but Link was kind of intended to just be the player... that might be my reason why. *Shrugs*

Well I for one think it would be a great change in the Zelda saga and like
Ver-go-a-go-go said "what items would she use?" I think that she would use the sword she used in TP and as for items I would go with what zeldatwilight said I think she should have epic spells like in OOT once again I think it would be great

I think they might have to bring the character more out of her princess role and into a rougher adventurer role for me to be interested in playing an entire game as Zelda. She really is the stereotypical damsel in distress still, despite her ability to weild arrows and magic. I don't say this to offend, it's really, sadly, the truth. If she controleld somewhat how she did in Brawl, I think it would make for a disappointing gaming experience.
However, as I said above, if they toughened her up, and showed her princess exterior is a front to an adventurer's soul and ability, it could be interesting. She would probably have to have the ability to use a sword though, because all arrows might not be too effective.
One thing I always thought might work was to give the player temporary control over Zelda in a regular title. It might be interesting to have a boss battle litke the end of TP and have control of Zelda on Epona who has to fire arrows at Ganondorf. Link would be computer controlled in battle (just sort of a pre-structured battle playing out while you do your thing as Zelda) and you have to make the shot to make Ganondorf vulnerable. Once it happens, control goes back to Link for awhile. The cycle could continue like this for the duration of the battle.
Either this, or we could just have a game where Zelda was ALSO the next in the line of heroes. (But then she'd have two of the three Triforces...)

No, never in a main series game. I guess you could control her for a little bit, as you do control statues in WW. Tingle has his own games in Japan, so I don't really see what's wrong with a spin-off in which Zelda is the main character. It probably wouldn't be that great, and it might not get out of Japan, but Nintendo could give it a try if they wanted too.

I think that it would be fun to include the ability to be able to play as Zelda. However, I don't see how they could do it. As for the idea of 'Links soul possessing their bodies.' No, this is far fetched and outrageous. Also, way too similar to TP, but substituting Zelda for wolf Link.
Also, I do not think it would be acceptable to have Zelda and Link as a sort of 'crime fighting duo' WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too gimmicky. If Nintendo pulled a stunt like this, it would dirty the very name of LoZ.
The only way I believe this could be done would be if Nintendo were to include playing as Zelda, as something not storyline specific. In other words. Zelda could be used for side-quests, gaining rupees, maybe even a little bit of research on what is coming next for Link. For example, ask around and glean information on the coming temple, gain hints as to which item will be in there and hints as to how to defeat the temples boss.
This would make Zelda a little relief for those players bored of temples and playing as Link by giving them a change. It also means it would not annoy more hardcore LoZ fans who would rather stick with Link.
I think the way they could include this is by say, Link would go to an inn and Zelda would be there, maybe hiding. If you talked to her she's say something like 'Link you look tired are you going to take a rest?' then, if you selected yes, effectively, Link would go to bed, and then you would take control of Zelda.

I don't think I would like an entire game where you had to play as Zelda. To me, it wouldn't feel right without Link somewhere in it. Plus, Zelda rarely has any big roles in any of the titles. All she really does is get kidnapped. The biggest thing she done in a Zelda game was in Ocarina of Time, and most of that was done as Sheik.
I would like to play as her for a portion of a game, however. Perhaps there will be a part where Link gets hurt or captured, and Zelda has to rescue him. If only it was for one small part, I think it would be a nice twist.
I'm also all for Nintendo making some unlockable modes in the next Zelda title. It would be nice to beat the game and unlock Zelda's story, and possibly Ganon's story as well. It would probably only be a few short missions, but it would be nice to experience all points of view for once.

Well, in Majora's Mask, we were able to take controll of Kafei, so this is definately possible, however, I have to say nay for this one. Sure, Zelda is cool and all and has cool powers that would be fun to play around with, but, let's be honest, it wouldn't feel Zelda to me. Traditional Zelda's you play as Link. If you're saying for a long period of time, no. A short while is a maybe, I just don't like shying away from tradition.

If there was a Legend of Zelda game in which you completely control Zelda, it would be quite odd. Controlling Zelda for perhaps a minute or so or possible a sidequest with her would be fine, but I don't see how I could fight massive monsters as Zelda, perhaps maybe if a LoZ game were to be two player in story mode, the secondary player could play as Zelda, and if note, Zelda could be a CPU.
Playing as Zelda would also feel kind of off, and afterall, she doesn't have the Triforce of Courage, perhaps if they powered her up, I wouldn't want to see a Tom-boy Zelda. (Well, I guess Tetra is, but she doesn't really count)
Seeing these games getting more and more for the 1st grade audience, Nintendo might even make a Zelda-based game for younger players, but I wouldn't really like that. Zelda doesn't really seem to be a playable character throughout a whole game to me.

Well Zelda has always had the Triforce of Wisdom, so she does possess one piece of it. In that case, she would have different powers than Link, and would probably be powers of telepathy and more magic related skills. Link's courage basically only gave him the ability to complete the adventure, so in my opinion, he's always had the least most power of all three Triforce bearers.
This dosen't change my opinion on my previous post though. I still think an entire game played as Zelda wouldn't feel right. Which is why I suggested a small part, or missions, where you have to do certain things in the game's story.
For example, if you were to have been able to play Zelda's part during Ocarina of Time, they could have started it out by showing some opening scenes of her meeting Link, then switched to her and Impa being chased by Ganondorf on horseback. So you would start out Zelda's sub-mission by having to control the horse and get to wherever her and Impa were going to. After that, you would probably have to learn how to be like a Sheikah. Then, you would do some missions to learn the various songs which Sheik teaches to Link throughout the game. And eventually, you would aid Link in the final battle against Ganon during the part where she holds him down with her power.

I think playing as Zelda would be SOOOO Awesome :zelda:!!!!!!
She could change into Shiek any time she wanted to. Her moves would be sorta like her moves on Mario Smash Brawl. Put of course much better and a little bit more complicated than just pushing 1 button. Her Items would probably consist of Her sword she had in Twilight Princess, the hookshot, bow and arrows, throwing stars (when shiek), boomerang maybe, bombs, and of course spells and magic. Now to have a WHOLE game to play Zelda would be a little odd. I think if Nintendo were to do a game where you play as Zelda they should either have it so you either play mostly as Link but in some cases for either puzzle solving or story reasons you would play as Zelda/Shiek. Or they should have it so you play the game the first time as Link and after you finish the game you can have the option to play the whole game over again Except this time you would play as Zelda/Sheik and play her story.:clap: What do ya'll think?

I like the idea of it being a portion of the game, maybe even half of the game, like mentioned earlier Kafei's style, though if Link was not in the same room/place it would be better for me.
Now a game entirely playing as Zelda, for some reason I don't feel that fond of the idea, maybe a s a second quest after finishing the game, or something like that.

I'd much rather have Link as the main character, but a little portion of the game might not be a bad idea. Think Gongoron in PH. But Zelda as a main character? Nawh.
Just lock her up in a tower to be saved or something. NPCs should know their place. :P

Two of the CDi games had you control Zelda, and we know how horrible those ended up being. (Though, I'll admit, it wasn't entirely because of controlling Zelda in one of them.)
I'm for the idea of only a small portion of the game being controlled as Zelda. She doesn't have all the weapons that Link has, so it would make sense to limit her abilities, at least in comparison to Link's abilities. She might be allowed to do a few things that Link can't that allow her to enter some otherwise inaccessible areas. Maybe have her turn into an animal like Link being the wolf? >o>

I think playing Princess Zelda would be really cool. For years I've always been stuck playing Link even though this game is called "the legend of zelda" O.o. (*sigh* don't you think that Link should share the spotlight???)
Anyway, I strongly think nintendo could make it work. Just like square enix's Final Fantasy XIII demo, I believe they should allow players to play each characters story (Zelda and Link) separately, so that your not always stuck with one storyline. To be honest, It would be a nice change for this series.
As for her weapons/abilities? Well, of course her part of the triforce would be a must for this game. Her light and silver arrows would be good too. What else????? Maybe her own sword? IDK

I think that she maybe able to use a sword as in the cutscene in Twilight Princess where it shows Zant and his forces over come the Throne chamber in Hyrule Castle she is wielding a sword.
Even with that in mind though I still dont see Zelda using anything else as a weapon, Magic maybe, I doubt it though, In my opinion Nintendo should never even consider using the idea of being able to play as Zelda. It would be for the best

I think maybe, Zelda could almost be a sidekick. Like some people have said, she would use spells and stuff, so maybe different parts of the games need you to use Zelda, and other then that you can play as Link. If anything made sense, in the First LoZ, names The Legend of ZELDA, you should be able to play as Zelda. Lots of people get Link and Zelda messed up (thinking Link is Zelda). I don't think having Zelda as a permanent character would be a hit, but having her as a sidekick or something would be cool.

This is something I would not want to see.
If there's one thing I like the way it is right now, it's my Zelda games. They have a solid and consecutive plot structure, good puzzles and a boy in a green tunic. I wouldn't mind seeing this paradigm shift a tad, like in Majora's Mask, but playing as Zelda? I don't see how that would work.
Zelda represents wisdom. With her piece of the triforce, I don't see what sort of adventure she could get into without breaking from that essential role she plays. The furthest I see her as a playable character is being able to control her for a given period of time like in Wind Waker.
Zeruda

Zelda may be associated with wisdom because in some games she possesses the Triforce of Wisdom, but that doesn't mean that she couldn't aid Link in his quest in a more physically aggressive manner. In fact, Tetra was pretty tough. She robbed people and commanded her own band of pirates. She freakin' attacked Ganon's face.
If Zelda was to fight (be it co-op play or interchaning sides [like in Fire Emblem]), then I'd rather not see her use magic abilities... at least, not pure magic abilities. I'd like to see her brandish a sword or dagger. If not, arrows would do. I would not, however, wish to see her take up an alter ego. I've grown tired of that, and I wish they'd give it a rest.
I think controlling Zelda for a few moments, possibly a side mission, would be a refreshing experience for the series. I do think that if this were to happen, though, it should be with a brand new Princess Zelda, and not one we've come to know by now.

I could see Zelda taking up arrows once again. Heck, she's had enough experience with light arrows, I'm sure she'd be able to handle fire, ice or regular arrows too.
And yes, we would have to have a new incarnation of Zelda for it to work.
One thing though, I like the idea of her alter ego. I personally liked Shiek a lot more in Ocarina of Time rather than Princess Zelda herself, even though they were the same person. I would love to see a revival of Shiek in a new game. Controlling Shiek for a side mission would be nice, or just controlling Zelda for a while with arrows.
I think if we were to have a new Zelda with a new attitude, it would have to be displayed a load of times before you got to actually control her for the time being.

gotta have a little faith in Nintendo... i'm sure they could come up with a few different ways to use zelda like spells(as mentioned earlier) she could have her own items too... she could even fight along side of Link she does have her own sword in TP doesn't she...
i think maybe this idea could work out, i always did like the idea of using bith Medli and Link together during that one temple in WW... kinda like switching between Kafei and Link in MM. or maybe zelda could have her own small parts just like Peach did in Paper Mario...
yeah i think this is not a bad idea

The best idea I thought of would be that at one point in the game, we would play Zelda :zelda: and we would have to sneak in Hyrule Castle talking to guards, servants, etc. Like a stealth with Zelda instead of Link. :)
So, a stealth part with Zelda :zelda:!

I could see Zelda having a game to herself, or as people have said earlier in this tread, co-op or sidekick (like what we are seeing of her role in Spirit Tracks.) My assumption would be if she is going to have a role in any games she would be a spellcaster, and maybe use the bow. I would think Nintendo will try out having her participate or be temporarily playable in a few games before she would get her own game.
Back some years ago I wouldn't have thought so, but in the newer games she has grown as a character, more impotence to the games and less of a damsel. Like her portrayal in WW, She was tough as Tetra and helped in the final battle. Even in TP she has a stronger personality then the classics. While she didn't play a big part (at least I don't think, haven't played it really), she was seen with a sword, she clearly could fight. How well on her own hasn't been explored much though. And even in OOT as Sheik she took more of a direct role, and could fight a little?, and as a child she was working hard to save Hyrule though lacked the means to do it alone. She has always been strong in magic too but Nintendo has done very little with that.
With the Smash Brother games taken into count and with her role in Spirit Tracks, this could be the start. How well the reception of Zelda as a sidekick/playable character goes, Nintendo may consider giving her a larger role in future games.
it's about time we get to be zelda for once while Link distracts these guards or gardeners. if zelda wasn't playable then this game wouldn't exist neither would the title from 1987.

Link could use his Item collection and Zelda can use her Spells. just think how big the spells would be making its return. When you use the spells, you play note, LIke OoT.
Agreed!!!!!!
Id say this game revolves around mirrors and soul stuff
Haha this is my idea
After a while in the game, (after begining and all) Theres a cut scene:
Zelda is in trouble, and Link Rushes in to save her. The main villian tries to push Zelda into the mirror, to sever her soul from her body! The main villian tries to have her soul so he can extract the Triforce from her body(thus destroying her body too)
Zelda is pushed towards the backend of the main mirror, and link rushes in to save her. Zelda hits the mirror a second before Link, and her soul comes out. Link runs into the mirror loosing his soul too, but this time it transferred into Zelda's body. Links body is souless right now, and is in Zelda's body. The main villain then kidnaps Zelda body and teleports away, but right before he does, he destroys the mirror, into 7 piece and scatters them across the world. Zelda (link soul) is unconsious right now.
Link eventually awakes up, to see bars in front of him. He sees 2 people fighting.
Main Villian: I captured her body! her soul cannot return unless its a full moon with the mirror, but I scattered the mirror pieces across the world!
Main Villian 2: You fool we extract the triforce using the mirror! Now were going to have to find the pieces!
Main Villain 1: Im not an idiot! There is another way, the reflection lake! On the next full moon we will extract the triforce!!!!
Main Villain 2: And all we have to do is keep the boy in green away from the peices!
Main Villain 1: Exactly! And we will get the triforce!
They leave laughing
Link (Zelda body) wakes up and looks around, then he realizes hes zelda! He hears a whispering noise next to him
Didya hear that? I can return to my body if we get the pieces of the mirror back! But it sounds like we have to do it before a full moon!
Link (zelda body) turns to see a spirit bouncing up and down, it was princess zelda!
After a few momments of chatting link gets control of the body.
Spirit zelda gives him a small tutorial on how to operate him, and lets him go off..
Zelda realizes its hopeless to get out, and takes out a piece of mirror. She explains to link how it was a small part of the mirror and should return links body. Link (zelda) touches the mirror and blacks out.
Momments later, Link wakes up back in the palace with the brocken peices of glass, princess zelda appears next to him and explains to him the mirror trick.
How ya like that? lol it sounds like a phun game id play!

Well, I'd rather play as Zelda than be stuck living without magic. If they're going to take away Link's magical capacity, then it only makes sense to allow the player to access magic by playing as Zelda.
The real question is, how much could we play as Zelda without fans complaining? I suppose it would really depend on how good the game was. If they made a game that was as intriguing as OoT or something, I doubt anyone in their right mind would complain if you happened to play as Zelda. People tend to pick more on the game not living up to tradition when the game itself isn't very good, but tend to overlook it when the game pulls off whatever it tries to do well.
I don't want Zelda to rescue Link or anything like that, but I might still like to see a game where Zelda has to deal with an issue because Link is off adventuring elsewhere (such a game could easily be placed in Hyrule during Link's Awakening, the Oracle games, or Majora's Mask, and give new insight into the timeline debates).
Alternatively, it might be nice to have a game filled with dungeons that work on a similar principle to the Spirit Temple. That is, they'd require you to clear one part of it as Link, and another part as Zelda. Basically, instead of the Light/Dark, Young/Adult, or Wolf/Human concept, we could have a Zelda/Link concept. If done that way, it could tie in quite nicely with the rest of the Zelda series. I hear ST has already laid the basic foundation in the series for such a thing to be done, but I haven't played it yet due since I'm still struggling with PH.
I don't think I would like it very much, she's the person your meant to save, not the person your meant to experience the game with.
I wouldn't like the idea of having a game with anyone else but Link, especially not with Zelda.
I mean what you do as Zelda?
Save Link from Ganondorf with your trusty Triforce of Wisdom?

If it were similar to Spirit Tracks where you were working together towards a common goal, then I would be happy to play as her. If it were a "Zelda save Link" scenario, then no, I would not like to play as her.
Although if I were to play as her, she'd better not be as good with a sword as Link, and should make up for that with some cool magic.
