View Full Version : What do you do to calm yourself?

This may sound odd but, what do you do to calm yourself? Like when you have a headache, or when you just don't feel calm.

Me? I listen to Dragon Roost Island theme, infact i'm listening to it right now!

I like to spread out my feelings quite directly on the forums of the interwebz.

Other than, play a game. Makes me happier.

One thing about me is that I don't show anger that well, so people don't really know when I'm angry, so they don't understand why I go off and vent.
But usually I listen to music, and rest, or just meditate.

People make fun (used to) of how angry I can get. To calm down, I stare at a wall and daydream or play a video game. Other then that, I lose my mind... which happens A LOT. *sigh*

I don't think I do the right thing.

At school: this is the worst one. I might start swearing at someone a LOT if they annoy me. I might also just go to the bubbler and get a drink. OR I will ask to go to the bathroom and then just take a walk around school.

At home: Play video games, go on the web (probabaly ZD), listen to muusic, or maybe play with my yoyos. It depends on what time of the day it is and if I have to go somewhere that night. I will do almost anything at home (sometimes video games make it worse if I can't beat it).

Almost anywhere: Sleep. I like to sleep. Sleeping makes everything better (unless you have a dream that makes it worse).

I usually just go with things until I calm down, or go and be by myself.

Or if I'm REALLY mad (this thankfully doesn't happen often,) I'll go beat my punching bag. Yes. I have a punching bag.

If I am angry or sad, I will almost always try to isolate myself. Normally I will sit outside, or I will sit in my room and think about whatever has caused me to be upset - and figure out the best way to go about it.

When i'm frustrated or mad, i do a lot of things.
1. Play (agressive) fighting games. (mostly mortal kombat)
2. Listen to hard music. (mostly rock, trance or techno with a hard bass)
3. Break something. (things that are not important)
4. Punch the wall. (one time i brused it and one time it went a little bloody)
5. Smoke a tabbaco. (i really need to quit)

You are referring to the question in the topic? The topic is asking when you become upset and need to calm down, what do you do to relax and become calm.

Mostly, I just go for a walk. We have a huge woodlot, so sometimes I'll climb a tree and sit there until I'm calm enough. Or maybe I'll go for a bike ride. It all depends on what I want to do, or how angry/annoyed I am.

Well what I do to make me calm is the total opposite of calm. Usually I run into my room and scream into my pillow or punch it till the fluff comes outXD!!! Then I like to wait in my room and just think about stuff, hide under my covers while I think though. Then I like to turn on some Beatles music just so I can sing and forget about it. :) After that I go outside and climb my apple tree. Maybe pick some apples (the rotton ones) and hit them with my tennis racket. After that I bike ride. Maybe do another kind of sport. :)

Tobbaco isn't THAT bad if you don't do it very often. Breaking stuff and punching the wall are good ones. I forgot to say that.

I also forgot to say something else. I will either invite someone over my house, or I will go over someones house. Playing and having fun with other people makes me forget I was ever mad.

I don't need to calm my self often, because i'm calm all the time (eventhough i drink one litre of diet coke a day, which has a lot of cafeine). If I really get upset or frustrated, i'll start swearing and start a whole conversation with myself. And sometimes an agressive game or some chocolate helps a lot too.

Like Linkman8, I don't show my anger very often. I can think of only a few times when I showed just how mad I was.

To calm myself down, I usually exercise, listen to music, play video games, or go online. All of those seem to calm me down a lot.

But yeah it may be a good thing or a bad thing.

Having patience or endure your anger is a good thing.

But bottiling all that anger up until your limit, you discharge all of your anger.
Ever heard of " To be blind by anger" ? well basicly thats it, you don 't see anything until you vented all of you anger.

I dont get angry all too often, but when I DO get pissed off, by George do I get pissed off ;) Im not counting game-rage here, I get awfully competitive on games so they dont usually calm me down. Work me up if anything =D

I find that sitting in my bedroom and reading a good book is always a good thing if I'm genuinly very annoyed. Reading Brisingr at the moment so I've got over 700 pages of calm-ness continuing to head my way :p

Other than that, venting on Skype or LoZ tends to work very well too; lot of people are on LoZ who have always been very good listeners hang around Skype a lot so I tend to just shout and be ticked off at them. Not AT them, really, but at everything. Venting helps =P. <3

I barely show my anger or sadness like linkman and hobbit, But when I do.. I do these things.
1. Listen to rock music with heavy bass.
2. rock out on my bass.
3. sit and think about the problem.
4. Play my favorite video games.

Mercedes, I assume you say by George after one of the King Georges, do ya have a specific King? =D

And to add onto my list, listen to You Tube too. I mean they have a lot of great songs on there, which of course makes me happy. But then I get into the Legend of Zelda Music and it makes me sad again.

I just bottle up my emotions. When I need to let them out, I will do any of these:
1. Play a game like Star Wars Battlefront II or Super Smash Bros. Brawl
2. Listen to some selections from Wind Waker (The "intense" ones help me steam out the emotions, such as Second Maritime Battle, Gohma Second Half, Gohdan, etc.)
3. Ride my bike/scooter. It helps me remove some adrenaline in my system.
4. Go on these forums. I find the members of this site, on the shoutbox, very kind with my problems. I thank you...
5. Just bottle it back up. Remember, it does burst at some point, but I manage to enlarge the size of the bottle. Only had one anger explosion in the 4 years I have been bottling it up.

When I was younger I had quite a temper and had to shout out or punch something very hard until I got exhausted. Gladly those days are over and a long walk in the woods or some excercise will do it, some music can also be relaxing nowadays.

I will always try to find a place where I can be by myself. I might read a book, play a game, go in the internet, or watch TV. If I'm in a place where I can't do any of those then I try to take deep breaths. I also listen to music.

I bottle up my emotions, I don't show my anger too often, when i'm really angry I actually put a pillow in my face and start crying silently (I know it sounds really dramatic but it actually calm me down) and then I eat like 3 triple chocolate muffins. Or I play SSBB.

ya same here but nothing gets rid of it (unless im boxing some one or playing call of duty)
ya when my anger get larger it keeps bottling up (into a hammerspace area)
but it never bursts, unless something extemly angers me then it bursts then nothing can stop me, only time can stop me

Going for a good half-hour walk does it for me. I usually end up humming a string of Zelda themes as I go too (not aloud, but in my head) and that tends to even things out for me.

If I can't go for a walk right then, I put on music. Anything will do really, just as long as I pay attention to it enough for it to wash over the anger.

I go to my backyard and lay in the grass. I have this stream behind my house and the noise of the water and the smell of the grass calms me. If I am really stressed out and need to majorly calm down, I'll just go to sleep for a couple of hours or eat my favorite snack ( t-t-t-trrraiiilllmmmiiixxx). In the past I have listened to recorded nature sounds to calm me, or just read a good book :)

I sometimes will play a game of CoD (A good way to I guess kill someone without actually "killing" them) Or Ill sit and think about things or go for a walk. I'm a genuinely mellow guy, but when I'm upset I need to break something.

I've broken lots of things, but I try to keep it as cheap as possible. Sometimes, I'll just rip paper, or chew on pens or wads of gum (like gnaw, and rip, and tear. not like a nervous tick) but I've torn my own shirts before, and even split a PS2 controller down the middle. Like, straight down the center, between the start and select buttons.

I like to use all my force and punch, knee, elbow, etc. etc. really solid things; like things that won't break. lol. It's less of a risk on my wallet, and I've never hurt myself doing it before, so until I do I think it'll suffice.

I used to wrestle in high school, and now I break things... I think I need to find a new sport. haha

One thing that I've found lately is that I don't usually do much to actually calm myself, because my emotional stability is usually pretty stable to the point where people think it's odd that I don't get angry almost ever; I find that what I do most often is sober my thoughts. This may sound odd, but if I'm worked up internally for whatever reason, I listen to some music that's not sad, but not happy. Somewhere in the middle.

I either just go with my feelings and don't try to calm down at all (I prefer to control the symptoms than fight against or bottle in the actual emotions), or I do some Tai Chi. Tai Chi makes you feel fantastically peaceful, it's really quite wonderful.

It would really depend on what I was upset about, because there are few things that I really get mad about. I am normally the kinda guy who wouldn't really ask for advice for every problem I have. I would tell my friends about a problem, just to let them know or something, but only when I'm really upset about something to I ask for advice on it. But if I'm to the point to where I'm really mad, I just stay mad until I eventually calm down. I try and find things about the problem that make me not care about it anymore.

I take a walk, if I can - anything that can get me out in nature.

I feel like I'm never calmer than when I'm working on a piece of artwork or jewelry... or when I'm fishing. Just tossing a lure back and forth into the waters of my local creek, or working a fly is just very peace-making for me. Again, it's an out in nature thing, but there's also something about a repetative, yet potentially productive activity that does that for me (actually catching fish is a big bonus).

Also, once, when I was really angry and upset about something, I tried something that sounds very weird that I learned from people in the psychology profession: Chucking ice cubes into a bathtub. I'm serious! It helped just a little. There's something about throwing the ice cube violently into the tub and hearing them clink and crash that can "get out anger" in a way that doesn't hurt anyone.

But, mostly, for me, it's art and nature that helps me. A couple of years ago, I was undergoing some very bad things and... I think fishing might have saved my life.

What I do to calm myself:

Play easy videogames
- So I don't lose easily and get even more angry. It calms me down a little.
Rest
- It just works.
Listen to my favorite songs
- Usually calm ones, or I just listen to Legend of Zelda music.
Release my anger in Wii Boxing.
- :xd:
Grab a small snack.
- Yum, it calms me down.
Take a walk
- Chillax.
Drink some water + wash my face.
- It relaxs me.

Those things usually calm me down, if they don't I just keep sleepin'. ;)

No, really I play guitar, it can usually pull me from any mood I am in to being completely focused on what I am playing. I can at times listen to music, like Piano Man or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YgAw1G-4zY.

sometimes

1, anger...well... i usualy do suallow it and pretend that nothing has happened, but when im on a top of a bomb i grab something to crush it with my hands so hardly that could set my felling free

2,. madness, madness is what makes from a dissapoint or a failing, what i do is sing a song about what do i feel (no, i don,t use offensive lyrics, i like to make loud and crunchy sounds than that)

3,. rage- this is quite difficult to control to me, cuz to make it go away i need something that scares me to death, or something more stronger that could make the feeling go away

4,stress, what i do to deal wtih this one is: sleep, do something to make me forget what i was worried about, go and invite my friends at the treehouse (it rocks, a nice place to B) and/or play a videogame that i did not play for a long time

5,hateness, i don,t usually hate anybody, but injusties is what i don,t like, cruelty nor evilness makes me hate what they DO, not them, well... i take a clear view of what is going on, and if its a hard situation i do all i can to fix the problem, theres allways a chance that you could end making good things, so far i know that i have allready go throught those facts,"...if there,s a problem there is a solution"

and the most difficult to calm is: being nervious and extremely worried... i cannot unstick from those 2 ones, its quite difficult to me to calm myself when i am very worried of something "for example...if i have get an F on a test" or when i have lost something very important (i usualy go shopping to calm myself and take a walk)

Depressed like a sad puppy who had lost his first Bone- I listen to, it may seem...Odd and completely Ridiculous, Zelda's Lullaby, Ballad of the Wind Fish, Song of Healing and Rutela's Theme.

Stress- Play some games or read a good book while receiving some Shiatsu.

Me? I usually find somewhere to be alone, and:

- Go for a looooong walk. Like, to another town. Somewhere I can see the hills. You feel like you're the last person in the world- so peaceful. And the exercise from walking gets anger out too.
- Oddly enough, if there's a lot on my mind and I just can't get calm/away from it, I go play an intense stealth game. Why? Because if I'm concentrating on not being detected in the game, there's no room for my mind to think about anything else, so it actually calms me down :D
- Lose myself in a book- often some kind of epic fantasy- again, if I'm focusing on someone else's intense emotions/troubles, I can't be thinking about my own worries~
- Listen to music. It depends on the situation, but usually I flick around until I find a song I can really relate to at the moment... then I listen to something cheery/hopeful/funny to lighten my mood~
- Play an instrument. Just improvising the song, I always feel you can pour all your emotion into the notes... and you can bring peace to yourself in the process... it's like a way to transform your emotions into something tangible, convert them to sound, and let them fade with the notes. Atm, I love doing this with my ocarina, the whole instrument seems to resonate beneath your fingers when you play, which is calming in its self :3

And if all else fails, I just focus on my breathing, matching the ins and outs with the noise of surf, of waves rushing foward and drawing back. Calms you down in no time, and works well in public situations too :3
It also helps you stop laughing as well xDDD

Depends. Sometimes I calm myself by going jogging for 10 miles or so. It's amazingly relaxing how long an hour and a half or so away from home can be.

Other times when I'm more busy I just listen to the myriads of zelda remixes and original soundtracks I've collected over the years.

My most favorite and most effective way to calm myself these days is to go and play some of my favorite zelda pieces on my baby grand. Zelda's Lullaby, Sheik's Theme, Hyrule Field Theme, Ocean Theme (WW), Grandma (WW), Song of Healing, Legendary Hero, and Farewell Hyrule King, etc., I've found some relatively advanced sheet music for and love just getting lost in the music. On the easier ones such as Zelda's Lullaby, Song of Healing, or Sheik's Theme, I sometimes find myself nearly falling asleep. (guess it really is a lullaby then? :) )

Amazing how beautiful some of those pieces are.

If I'm feeling off at all, such as angry or anxious, or panicked, I tend to listen to only one song: "Last Regrets" by Key & Ayumi. Or just more calming music in general.

Otherwise, I try to stay silent until I do calm down. Just think on it, ect. Or even something else entirely.

Normally I just sit there and take deep breaths like you do when you hyperventilate... Other times I shut my eyes and imagine I'm somewhere else...

Normally it helps, other times... nope.

If i'm stressed from work or something, usually i just light a candle, (yes, how masculine of me lol) and lie down/watch a movie. I find candles very anti-stressing, Especially the scented ones.

To calm myself, I will normally do one, or several, of these things;

1- I will normally meditate for a short while, to clear my head of things, and to empty out everything that is troubling me.

2- I will go on a long walk to absolutely no-where. Walking for long distances (Especially around Sunset) normally calms me. Just watching the world fade into Twilight is amazing. The change in everything just completely clears everything from my mind.

3- I'll listen to one of several Zelda themes or any other game tune.
Some of these include;

The Song of Storms
The Nocturne of Shadow
The Minuet of Forest
and Zelda's Lullaby.

Other than those, I'll watch a video on Youtube, look at things related to games, go on ZD or mess around with different things on my Laptop.

When I'm upset about something, I usually do the popular - listen to music, take a walk. Basically, time alone, but sometimes, I like to go back through messages on my email from old friends. It calms me to down to read all of the wise remarks and funny things I used to talk about with friends.

I just sit on my bean bag being depressed and staring at the wall until I'm either calm or my mum tells me to quit it because I look like a loony.
If it's raining, I go out barefoot in the rain and just stand there, especially if it's a thunder storm. I look at the lightning and listen to the rain. It's beautiful.
Then, in both cases, I play some cello/

I mostly when I annoyed or angry, there's the option of Zelda music {ST or TP}, or there's walking into a shallow bit of water at the beach & dipping my feet in. That alway's calms me down. I don't know why, it feels so nice.

I thought I had posted here as well....

Anyway, first of all, take a deep breath, calm myself. If that does not work, I listen to music to settle down or play video games.

I never let it show if I'm angry or upset, so I usually just go off by myself somewhere, outside, my room, and read a book or think about the issue (if there is actually a legit issue that needs taken care of). And.. on occasion I have come online and ranted to a few close friends.

I do things to distract myself, mainly stare at the computer all night (I REALLY need to stop doing that), rub my forehead to help with headaches and stress, or just take deep breaths and relax.
