My gosh. I don't believe that. I forgot to list the Inheritance Cycle. And we were just talking about it before I posted this thread. Well, that one too. Just finished Brisingr yesterday, and my only complaint is that I think Christopher Paolini still puts to much description in his books.

He does tend to put a little too much detail, but I don't mind it that much. Tolkien gets into some pretty deep descriptions in LotR as well. The elves in Eldest were kind of annoying though.>.<

the last time i read a book was 3 months ago (your inner fish). I think the Davince Code and the Delta Deception were cool books. I also read all the harry potter books. But for some reason i stopped reading books, i don't enjoy reading as i used to when i was younger.
Good God I agree with you guys on Brisinger. I can't say it's annoying, but the book would probably have at least 50 pages less if he wasn't so damn descriptive.

Anyone says a word about Brisingr's storyline, and they'll wake up in Cambodia with a large bump on their head.
I also forgot to mention "The Dark is Rising" series. Read all five, and liked 'em. Though I haven't seen the movie yet.

Nobody mentioned Dune yet? For shame! :p
All of Frank Herbert's books are great, but avoid the later stuff by his son. They raped his father's works.
But if you want to know the greatest science fiction author of all time, there is but one man, my idol:

The thing is, people who know less about Obama than you do still vote for him. They don't squat, but they think he's the best thing since long underwear. They care that he's a liar, or that he feels we should kill babies that survive an abortion, the list goes on.
Curious, but can you supply a source for your statement concerning abortion where it was stated by Barack Obama himself? I am unsure how credible your remark truly is, seeing he voted against a bill - when there was already protection for infants in his state. There was a Republican senator - and even he rejected the bill. Does that mean he is for infanticide too?
Also, has anyone here read The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne? I have seen this book countless times, and it is now one of the top 10 most popular books of 2008.

I didn't mean to post that. I was quoting Linkman, thought I copied the post, but didn't. So when I pasted it and posted, it came out like that. :hmm: It was meant for another topic, but I didn't post it there because I don't know how to find the source of my statement. There's a lot, although, one of the best I've read so far would be Finber's Bane by Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb. Then there's things like:
-The Starlight and Shadows trilogy, by Elaine Cunningham
-Pretty much everything by R.A. Salvatore (especially the Drizzt series)
-George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones
-Robert Hugh Benson's Lord of the World
-The Moonshae Trilogy by Douglas Niles
-I'll go with LotR because i enjoyed reading it, i wouldn't call myself a fanatic though
-The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
-Pretty much everything by T. Pratchett, The light Fantastic would be one of my favorites though
-The entire Avatar series, or the Time of Troubles, whatever you want to call it, it has different authors, but Scott Ciencin's Shadowdale was one of the best books ever
-Some stuff from Ed Greenwood, Silverfall to name one
-The Erevis Cale trilogy by Paul S. Kemp, i read those at least three times
-I recently read some stuff from Lois McMaster Bujold, Mirror Dance fascinated me since i usually don't read Sci-Fi, i plan on reading some more stuff from her
-I'm gonna be cliche and go with Oscar Wilde's De Profundis, i used to carry a copy of it almost everywhere, that and The Picture of Dorian Gray
-The Fionavar Tapestry from Guy Gavriel Kay was awesome, i'm planning on reading through it again
Those are all that i could think of for now, there's some more, but they don't hold as much importance to me as these do, i might update this if i think of something more.

I like a lot of Stephen King, Michael Crichton (RIP), Dean Koontz, JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling, Ray Bradbury, C.S. Lewis, Edgar Allan Poe, and some John Grisham.
October Sky (Rocket Boys) by Homer Hickam is a good book, as well as The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Greggory Maguire books are also pretty decent, yeah i'll admit it, I read Wicked, but i'm keeping my man-card.
One of my favorite books of all time though is "The Devil in the White City" by Eric Larson. It is a book about a murderer H.H. Holmes and also about the Chicago World's Fair, and he combines the two stories really well into one book. He had two other books as well, one of which I have read, Thunderstruck, and I also felt it was a very good book.
I am currently, and have been reading for quite some time "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" Very interesting to see how Hitler rose to be the Chancellor of Germany, I am currently to the point where he is planning to invade Austria. The book is 1200 pages and is a very very slow read.
The next book I read will be Prodigal Genius, which is a book about Nikola Tesla who has always been a sort of hero of mine, so I look forward to that.

I am right now loving Jules Verne novels. You know, like:
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Around the World in 80 Days
20,000 Leauges Under the Sea
I've read those three, I need to read the other sci-fi books (not the massive 6,000 stories).

Today I will start reading the last book, been looking forward to that :)

Some of the books I have enjoyed:
The first three Harry Potter books ~ The ones after that were very depressing, but still decent, so I could finish the series.
The Declaration/The Resistance ~ I am reading the second book at the moment and they have been absolutely brilliant. It is engrossing, suspenseful and, at times, horrifying.
Dear Dumb Diary ~ It's a children's series, yes, but it's hilarious IMO.

Strangely enough, I hardly ever read (although I have been reading more recently.)
My favorite book series (keep in mind I have yet to read series like Harry Potter, Lord of the Ring, etc.) is the Underland Chronicles, by Suzanne Collins.
You've probably never read them. No one I know has. Basically a kid falls into an underground world with giant, sentient creatures, like rats, bats, roaches and whatnot. It's pretty dark, but the story's very enjoyable for me. I have yet to read the last two books though (The Marks of Secret, and The Code of Claw.)

Ironic as it is--considering how much I love to read--I haven't read or finished any major series.
But anyways,
I enjoyed The Hobbit, as well as The Mist. I'm currently reading a rather interesting book on ancient history and the like called Uriel's Machine. Another book that I'm reading that I find quite interesting is Physics of The Impossible.
I like mostly non-fiction to do with the paranormal or philosophy, or Steven King.

Holes: This is actually the first book I read and actually enjoied reading. I actually prefer the book over the movie also.
Small Steps: A follow-up of Holes with one of the boys from camp "Armpit". I beleive this book was released with 2 copies, and I own the 1st run of it and I think its different from taking a glance at it in the book stores.
Cowboys Don't Cry: Not many people Im sure have heard of this book but its a good book for a cowboy book. I really enjoied it since the setting was in my province :)
The Outsiders: This book is probably my favorite book of all time. And to think S.E. Hinton was only 16 when she wrote this O_o. Also preferd the book over the movie.

I recently picked up a new book by one of my favorite authors, Margret Peerson Haddix. The book was called "Found" and it is the first books the the new "Missing" series. I couldn't put it down (like her other books) and I finished it in a matter of 4 hours. I was very surprised by how quickly I could finish this 3-- page book. This book definately goes on my favorotite books list, and Haddix is truly a master of page-turning suspense. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

My favourite books are all by one of my favourite authors, Christopher Paolini and the books would be the Eragon series including Eragon, Eldest and the best so far Brsingr. I think they are great and I could never put them down, They do take a while to read though as the first book has about 400 pages, The second book about 600 and that is quite large in size and finally the third one which is the same as the econd but with 700 pages.I recommend them to anybody.

Casino Royale by Ian Fleming is still one of my all-time favourites. I love the Bond series of films, but the original novels are so much better. The first time I read it (long before the movie existed) I read the last line of the book, and then turned the page not knowing that was the last line. I thought there had to be more, and I was left shocked that this is how they ended it. It was extremely well done.
I also read the majority of Star Wars books as long as they take place before the end of the movies. Any of the ones that take place after Return of the Jedi bore me.
In general, Ian Fleming's probably my favourite author. He's able to take something mundane like Bond eating breakfast and make it interesting.

I finally finished Eragon. It was a good book, but it's not my favourite. I still have two books waiting (Oudste and Brisingr). I think i'll start reading them in the summer holiday.
I forgot to add two english books on my favourite list. I had to read these books for english classes.
- 1984/Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. This was book was written in 1948 and describes a future totalitarian regime in 1984. This book is very dark and can be very difficult to understand. It's a very good book though.
- On the Beach by Nevil Shute. Another old book (1957). It describes the future in 1969. Humanity is almost destroyed after a nuclear war (WW III), but people in the southern hemisphere survived. The high radiation comes closer and closer because of the wind and the people on Australia have only 3 months more to live. It's another dark book, but worth a read.

I just gonna say a few things, Oudste?O.o, Thats the only one with a different name, In England it is called Eldest , Suppose it is the Duetch name. Also Eldest and Brsingr are a lot better so I you will probably like them a lot more the Eragon, Eragon is quite boring, Not really much of a fight at the end compared to the other two.

The Epic of Gilgamesh was rather interesting, too.

classic "sherlock holmes" i love the mysteries and the puzzles his book is totally awesome it has a very interesting story ...and a little...unknown?
and i think that you didn,t heard about this one: its called "Diary of a dog"...this story has a very sad ending (its long and...sad) "poor dogy it was only a little inoccent pet, why did those people lend him in the middle of the street alone?"....and then for long time passes...he dies (this is the most saddest story i ever readed in my life)

I also love Goosebumps, I think I read them all. They were one of my favorite series. I still watch the movies whenever they show them, or the tv series.
I also enjoy reading fantasy stuff, and I create fantasy stuff.
Aside from that, I also like to read comics.
I've read Lord of the Rings, all three books and the extra content. Also, the hobbit and a few books from the Mib series.

I used to read loads, but not so much these days. I've read Harry Potter series, Artemis Fowl series, the "Eagle" series (by Simon Scarrow, about 2 legionaries in the 2nd Roman Legion when they invaded Britain), some warhammer 40k books, and the Dark Templar Saga (these are all the things that I can remember reading).

My favorite books up until around last year were the Artemis Fowl books. As for the inheritance cycle... i tried to start Eragon, but the "prologue" so to speak before he leaves is just too long for my tastes. I read the hobbit a long time ago, and it was awesome. LotR, too. I'm starting to enjoy Tolkien's work a lot. I'm also a John Green fan, too. The only book of his that i've read is Paper Towns, but i have the other two.

What, does John Knowles get no credit, and the Inheritance series DOES? Chris Paloni, while maybe descriptive, is not the most original author. John Knowles' "A Seperate Peace" and Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" are two of the best books ever, and few mentioned them. Ah well... maybe more of you will read the classics first!

I really need to start reading more books. I really like Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, and I really liked John Grisham's books, more specifically The Innocent Man. Which, may I might add, is completely non-fiction and written about someone's life on death row.
I also really like Catcher In The Rye, which was a very controversial book years ago and it is read by a lot of mentally ill people like John Lennon's killer. The book might be boring to many, but I found it interesting.
I feel like I'm missing a couple, but those are the ones I've come up with at the moment.

My favourite books are the Darren Shan Saga and the Demonata Saga
Hmmm, I think one of my favorite books is(are?) The Time Travelers Wife, When the movie came out and was said to be based on a novel by Audrey Niffenegger I decided i wanted to read the novel first, It was amazing. So much better than the movie, If you haven't seen the movie, i reccomend reading the book first. It has so much detail that was left out in the movie, lots of missing information and a totally different ending.
(I was actually watching it a the movies, and when it ended I literally shouted "That's not how it ends!" Good thing there was only about 10 people :P)
I also enjoy books by Tess Gerritsen, she writes mainly medical/crime thrillers. Another talented Auther, My favorite of hers i think is...Gravity.
Again, i reccomend it :) Though I wasn't really impressed with the ending. =/

My favourite books are the Darren Shan Saga and the Demonata Saga
I borrowed the first Darren Shan trilogy (the title of the book says freakshow trilogy) and I really like it. I almost finished the first story and I constantly want to read it again eventhough I have to study for an exam.
I also added Eldest in my most boring book lists. It is just a lot of political talk and almost no adventures, even the elves are boring with all their stupid rules >.>

Well, I've been reading a little bit more now. I still enjoy Jules Verne books, but I haven't read them in quite a while. However, there's one book I've really been liking currently. That book would be Flowers for Algernon. Its an awesome story about how a mentally challenged adult is given a second chance with a brain operation, and his world drastically changes with his understanding of things. However, with that, people think differently of him as well.
A few other reads I've found interesting were Alas, Babylon, several selections from Edgar Allan Poe, such as The Cask of Amontillado, The Fall of the House of Usher, and a few others. One book I also found nice was The Alchemist. Now, feel free to compare this post to the post I made around this time last year, in which I only enjoyed the works of Jules Verne.

Coraline kids film just came out this year! It's pretty good too. I really recommend checking it out sometime.
2. Solaris written by Stanislaw Lew

I used to love reading when I was younger, but when I got older I despised reading. I never understood why people liked about reading. When I was in 5th grade I picked up a book series and it had cats (one of my favorite animals) and so I proceeded to read a few chapters. It was really good, I found out I read "The New prophecy: Midnight" and they had another series. I read the first series and understood how whatever happened in Midnight came to be. I conitued to read and now I have my own favorite characters, one for sure is Jayfeather. The way Erin Hunter writes about his feelings totally fits him. The verbs she chooses describes him so much on his attitude. Easily irritated, mysterious & I guess he prefers to be a lone wolf throughout the Power of Three.
I am also a fan of the Zelda mangas and it has it own unique twists. I read the another book called "The Shwa was Here". Wonderful novel. Basically a kid named Calvin is "invisible" and he is often upset why no one can actually get to know him. He meets up with a boy, the main character, Antsy and he tries to help him what happened to his mother and his dad really makes me want to punch him. His father doesn't remember he has a son and forgets to feed him so Calvin usually feeds himself half the time. Sometimes his dad remembers. It's a depressing story to find out what Calvin goes through.

1984 is an intriguing story. I really liked it...in a dark kind of way. I guess "enjoyed" is not a good word for such a story. It was a really good read, though.
1984 is a good read, but George Orwell's Animal Farm is far better. I also like Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion

I recently started to read the Dresden Files series, and I really like them. They're about a wizard for hire who deals with the supernatural cases that the police get, and he goes around solving cases and kicking arse with uber magics. I read the first three in a week, and I'm going to try to get on the other books that I'm only half sure exist. =P I recommend them to anyone looking for a good read; wizardy or non-wizardy.
I also read Forrest Gump in my English class, and that was an awesome book as well. Go read it now. Along with the Dresden Files.

My first post in this thread was dull, and my perspective on books have changed greatly. While I am not saying that The Hobbit is no longer worthy of being a favorite or is any less amazing than it truly is, there are other books which I have read that I've grown to love. I, without a doubt, have loved reading the works of Michio Kaku and Richard Dawkins. Most recently I've read Physics of the Impossible and The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution. I am a huge fan of non-fiction, and these two are absolutely favorites of mine. I've been reading more non-fiction in my spare time, and I enjoy it more than any type of literary genre.
I've read plenty of other books, but these outshine the majority. I'd definitely recommend them!

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. It's fantastic, oh goodness.
A Confederacy of Dunces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Confederacy_of_Dunces)is amusing, offensive, invigorating and so many more things, all at once! While there's not much on character development, there is a lot of stubbornness, adventures, general misunderstandings and the like to be had. The setting is a good ways back as far as USA goes, I'd say 1920-1960 somewhere, and it's a bit, ah, different. I don't understate the offensive.
Hmm, perhaps more friendly is the A Wrinkle in Time series, or perhaps The Phantom Tollbooth. Veritable STAPLES OF MY CHILDHOOD. Both mostly adventures. One with a bit more science involved, and the other, the latter, a bit more with silly wordplay abound.
I remember My Side of the Mountain, too. Good stuff.
Also, if you'vr never read Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel you're missing out. It made me spontaneously develop a six pack when I was five.

The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
I'm so drawn in by all the conspiracy theories and such that he incorporates into his stories. Also, the addition of the subject of Free Masonry just boggles my mind. He uses everything so well and it really is what inspired me to want to be a mason (Which I'm not yet). After reading the book I read up on masons and overall this book is just fantastic. A great read.

Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Caroll.
I don't remember ever reading the original Alice in Wonderland, but I seriously love its sequel. I can't even remember why I love it so much. Maybe it's just because it's "nonsense fiction" and so irrationally peculiar that there's nothing for me not to love about the story. Maybe it's because there's nothing rational enough about the story to consciously analyze so I can't get distracted by all those over-analization techniques that English classes have brainwashed me with.
Oh gosh, now I really want to go dig out my old copy for another read.
The Children of Hurin - JRR Tolkein

Call of the Wild and All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. The first one is a fantastic novel, the second one is a mishmosh of all sorts of things, which makes it almost indescribable-short stories, words of wisdom, advice, thinking out loud, there's just so much in there that it's hard to describe.
Of the two, Call of the Wild is my favorite, but I love them both.

Drylor The First Artifact by Ryan Tomasella. It is a fairly new fantasy book but sooooooo good. Here is what it is about (taken from amazon)
When a man wakes up inside a cage that is being carried through an underground city, he has no idea where he is or what has happened to him. As Von, a victim of amnesia, is taken to a jail cell to await his fate amongst elves, humans, dwarfs, gnomes, and halflings, he is told he is a member of the Royal Guard of Genisus. It is not long before he is transported to the palace where he meets an impatient king who eventually returns him to his jail cell while deciding his destiny. As Von's memory slowly returns, he discovers that he is the only one who can protect Drylor-a world that abandoned him-from its greatest evil, his own brother. Through his journey to the truth, Von meets an unlikely group of friends who are willing to sacrifice everything to help him stop his brother Scarlet from annihilating the only world they have ever known. The Thief Lord
The Healing Spell. This was one of the few fiction books I consider to be somewhat benign.
The Lord of the Rings. DERP! I'm still working on the Two Towers.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (STILL need to read book two.)
The Song of the Lioness series
I am Number Four. I'm almost done the book, and the movie isn't half bad. Not as good as the book, of course.

My favorite book is Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I was first introduced to the story via the musical based on the story. Being a huge music fan and book fan, I decided to delve into both versions. I took a week to read the book in it's entirety. It's translated from French, so at times it could be a difficult read. But it is by far one of the best stories ever told. By second favorite is The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. Some of you may have heard of the first part of this: Dante's Inferno. I know it's required reading in a lot of high schools and college level courses. I took it upon myself to read the whole thing, including Purgatory and Paradise. John Ciardi's translation is the best if you're looking for an easy understanding of the text.

My brother has that book and just by looking at it makes me cringe. I love reading but big books like that make me nervous.

Here is the thread to list your favorite books of all time.
Here are Mine:
The Lord of the Rings (the entire trilogy) an awesome series, epic and well written
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (all of them so far) really good series, and I like mythology :D
Harry Potter (whole series, again) this one's a given
Any Terry Pratchett book, he's a great author with many great books
Redwall. Now that one's for younger readers really, but I loved it when I was younger, and still like it because of that.
That's all I can think of right now.
those, except the LOTR books. they were shallow. shallow and pedantic. ha.
also, the Maximum Ride books. Dragonlance Chronicles, and Tales. The Legends of Lone Wolf, too.

I just finished reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as well as the sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and I'm about 1/4 way through the last one in the series. And wow, these books are phenomenal. The plots in all three are downright amazing, and all the plots intertwine and just when you expect something, something else crazy happens! They're my second favorite book series, and I recommend them to anyone who enjoys mystery thrillers.

Hmm, I have a few different books I really enjoy. Actually, series I enjoy. I love continuous stories. I also love fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi.
My favorite would have to be the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon) by Christopher Paolini. I love the magical aspect of the stories. They have a great mix of action, tragedy, romance, and humor. Plus, Paolini's writing style is fantastic. I also enjoy the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. I love mythology, and those books were chock full of it. Plus, they were cute and really funny. Now, I'm reading Riordan's spin-off series, The Heroes of Olympus. It's quite interesting to see the clash of Greek and Roman mythology. Let's not forget about Harry Potter! I love the Harry Potter series. They're simply great books, filled with magic and comedy. They're a bit more child-oriented than the Inheritance books, even though both series include similar themes of magic and fantasy.
My favorite book series when I was younger, though, was the Animorphs series. A total of 64 books in all; 54 main titles and 10 extras. Now, mind you, the main books were about 150 pages each. They weren't fifty-four 500 page books! :xd: Out of the 64 total, I've read 60. I was so obsessed with those books when I was younger. They were great, with a lot of action, but a somber feel. Plus... epic series cliffhanger. 'Nuff said.
There are many other books I really enjoy, but those are some of the most prominent in my mind.

I have another book for you. It's called Divergent. YOU MUST READ IT. It's on about the same level as the Percy Jackson series for me, which says alot.

My favorite books.... I have plenty, but these are just a few memorable ones:
- Stargirl and Love, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli - There is something about this book I love. It just radiates a "be yourself" message.
- The Time Cat by Lloyd Alexander - Adventure time through history! One of my favorite things to do.
- Eclipse of the Cresent Moon (Egri Csillagok) by Geza Gardonyi - What can I say. It combines both Hungarian history, because it is a fictional novel, and action right through what somebody would have done in a person's view living at the time. It is just a beautiful and great story.
- The Twelve Kingdoms by Fuyumi Ono - My favorite series. I stumbled upon it by accident and loved it ever since. It tells of a magical land parallel to ours, which made my fantasy spin wild. I have seen the TV series based on the books, but I don't think it was as good as the book.

I really not very interested in fiction, but I do enjoy a good nonfiction book every now and then. My favorite book would have to be God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens, but I really love everything that Hitchens writes. His memoir, Hitch 22 is also a great read, as is his short book on Mother Theresa, The Missionary Position. I'm also really into history and right now I am reading a book put out by Oxford Press on the Russian Revolution. I got it and My Life by Leon Trotsky as a gift from my Latin teacher for graduation. There both great books.

Im not a very heavy reader, I used to read a bunch of books from the Lybrary when I was in Middle School though.
My favorite would have to be 1984, it's like Half-Life but without guns.
I also liked Of Mice and Men and the Grapes of Wrath.
Im a big fan of Percy Jackson but I never read the last one and I haven't had a chance to read the new series by the creator. Same with Diary of a Wimpy kid and Vladimir Tod I read the first few and I havent read the last ones that came out.

I'm not really into western things, so my favorite "book" would be a light novel from Japan.
My favorite light novel would have to be To Aru Majutsu no Index. To Aru Majutsu no Index is set in Academy City, a technologically advanced Academic city located at western Tokyo which studies scientifically advanced superhuman students with powers, but is also set in a world where magic is real. Touma Kamijou is a student in Academy City whose right hand, the Imagine Breaker, has the ability to negate any supernatural powers, but also his own luck. One day he finds a young girl hanging on his balcony railing named Index. She is a nun from Necessarius, a secret magic branch of the Church of England, and her mind has been implanted with the Index Librorum Prohibitorum—103,000 forbidden magical books the Church has removed from circulation. His encounter with her leads him to meet others from the secret world of science and magic and an adventure with his friends where science and magic collide. Touma's unusual power places him at the center of conflicts relating magicians and science-based espers in Academy City. As Touma tries to help and protect his friends, he learns the people he knows are not as they appear and begins to attract the attention of magicians and espers alike as they try to unravel the secrets of Academy City and Index. There is also a spin-off series called "To Aru Kagaku no Railgun" which focuses on Mikoto Misaka who is one of the characters of the original.
The To Aru Majutsu no Index light novel series is one of the most popular in Japan and also one of the best selling; Index alone has sold over 10 million copies and the overall Light Novel franchise (including side stories and Railgun) has sold over 15 million.

Of course, there's the Lord of the Rings trilogy, plus The Hobbit. I got into those books when I was in grade school, and I've never stopped loving them. They're classics. Same with the Harry Potter series; I started reading them before they got so popular, and even now that I'm older they are among my favorites. Besides that I enjoy a lot of Dean Koontz's books. I like his writing style, and he's very good with the suspense and mystery and unexpected twists. Also, Jean Plaidy; I've read most of her Tudor era novels. And Jodi Picoult. Her books are very moving.
