This is a thread where if you generate images with programs like photoshop or gimp, you post what you made and we comment on it.

And even if you don't do this kind of work, you can still comment on what you like or don't like. this is all about constructive criticism.

Hey twili, how'd you make that one? That's pretty impressive for someone new to image editing.

And GildedSword, I like your stuff, it seems really full(because I didn't feel chaotic was the right term).

An Kybyrian, that's some nice stuff there. Simple, and well done. You could maybe think about making it more complex and that would probably help a lot with the style you seem to be using with that Temari one.

Where you can clearly see a style change it depicts the end of the newer ones and the start of the older ones.

There's GIMP, which you could look up and get for free. It's pretty close to Photoshop but no where near the same thing. You can still make a lot of pretty good stuff with it(and on LoZ there's a few gimpers, just for you blackice :p)

Just remember the image tags. It took me a couple hours, and I'd like to screw with the lighting some more, but meh.

That DK one is pretty good, TimeLag. My criticism is the poo-brown color behind the monkeys. I think that brown could be a bit more yellow so that it reminds us more of bananas, and so that it blends better.

Play Donkey Kong 64, after that you won't mind the color.

I'd say the top one is the best Kybyrian, but I think it needs a different text color, and maybe a new font as well. It's just too faint.

I used a feature called "swirl" on photo flexer and all you have to do is click where you want to swirl and it will swirl.

Hylian Shield, eh? I don't know if you've ever seen me or anything, but I popped up in the shoutbox from time to time like a few weeks ago under Kyjin or maybe Kenpari.

Anyway, I especially like that banner. The curved edges really catch my attention, you don't see many people do that anymore.

I also like the Bleach and Mario ones.

It's the only font color and stuff I tried. I went ahead and shot for the Main Zelda Title font, I can try different things if you wish. Colors, font, etc.

yeah thats a good idea.
can you do the font as the one blackice posted but then the collor white, but with the light effects like my last sig. and then the light effect something red or orange like.

I usually just make banners etc. on whatever game Im playing right in the spur of the moment. As of a little while ago, its been Resi Evil 0; one helluva game so I guess I should make a banner? Yes, I will.

Its a pop-out =D Lot of differant layers so as the gun is a pop-out, but doesnt go behind the border, but so Billy himself is under the border. Annoying, but I like it.... somehow...

Very nice altogether. But maybe try using more filters instead of light effects, since I can see a lot of differant angles of light, not as much blending. Try duplicating the layer with the render on it, smudging it outwards and make it overlay/multiply. Then smudge the other layer a tiny bit to blend. :) I hope that helps if you understood it. =P

Well uh, itslikethefirstthingieverdidpleasedonthitme, sho yea, i kind of got bored and i saw this awesome picture from a webcomic, so i tortured photoshop till he spat this out.

I pretty much just croped the image, typed in "Nian" and added an outer glow, then i got a stupid Navi pic, and messed with that, i somehow managed to cut it out of the original thing, and just dropped it thar.

Take note that this is like, one of the first things i ever did in PS, so have mercy.

P.S:The little circles are bubbles, not poop.

Right then:

If this is your first attempt, then Id say it is really good. What I did and what I think you should do is look for some tutorials of differant styles.

First things first. Go onto deviantart.com and download some brushes. To add them to Photoshop, when you open the brushes menu, there should be a small triangle in the top right. Click it > load brushes and then simply select the brushes.

Try and get a gaming render from renderplanet.net and make the origional image size smaller. Brush around the image, on differant layers, and try out with distort filters and blending.

Practice makes perfect!

Master Link, you have some allright material, but make sure you get clean cut-outs of your renders. They look choppy and it's pretty akward.

Except for that last one, which looks pretty decent.

Ky: I think you need to render your images better, since theirs black smudges across the image. For simple-ness and effectivity, but perhaps time consuming, zoom in and simply use the eraser =]

Flexy: Very soft on the eyes, I like it. Perhaps make the banner a bit more likely; but everyone has differant preferances :) Keep it up, your doing great!

Master Link: Choppy renders again >.< I hate downloading bad cuts; I try and render my own now. I rendered Ryu in my banner by cutting him out slightly, duplicate layer > filter > gaussian blur and then erase edges.

Jeff on LoZ told me that to get less fuzzy edges and it works awesome :)

Go in and erase pixel by pixel what you dont want. Also, try websites like PlanetRenders and such that will host images that are typically allready cut out.

They're Apophysis renders that are blended with the main render. It's actually pretty tricky to get the hang of, I had to make 15 Photoshop layers because I applied the image a whole stack.

Actually it's the same on a signature as in real life ^^" Just a difference in distance between ' objects '. The most common way to create depth would be using sharpen/blur, light source/shadow,...

An example:

The flower above ( mechanic flower...) is sharpened, while the background is blurred. This makes a difference in depth and makes you realize the flower is close by and the field or w/e is behind it is further away. It also focuses your attention on the flower. Most of the time if a designer uses depth in his/her signature it's supposed to bring up the focal points ( like...a render of a person, or in this case a mech. flower =P ).

End of the lesson.

The picture in the right top corner is NOT the shadow of a ninja, like many people have assumed, it is the silhouette of Altair from Assassin's Creed.

And the little impish character in the corner, well, I think you can figure that one out. ^^

As for how I did it.... a tutorial. ;D I found a good one a while back and that's where I got the glow/shatter effect thing.... but I did do a lot of other stuff to it like add in a few c4ds and messed around with light, color, and a few other effects.

Photoshop is dah best. CS3/CS4 recommended. I work with CS4 because my comp can handle the system requirements ( wich are...becoming sicker and sicker with every version) but CS3 work the same imo.

Try putting your render on a black or white background, smudge like crazy, and then put another copy of the render on top of that.

An easy way to make backgrounds on GIMP is to use the Lava filter and experiment with different gradients.

Really awesome sig Master Link! @_@ I love the Ganon one, the only thing that's bugging me is the text. It almost looks it was a watermark on the Ganon render. Otherwise.. wow!

It's not that bad Petman. XD Give yourself some credit! Just a suggestion, when you save, use PNG (If your using paint, I don't suggest messing with GIF unless your using a very limited color pallet. Even then, I would save a PNG version of it just incase the colors go funky on you) Saving anything pixely as a JEGP will -always- kill it's quality.

I haven't made many signatures, but I have a few. n _n

keep in mind I customize GIF's backgrounds to the forum color I'm going to be using them on... So please ignore white/blue backgrounds. ^^;

Yes Petman, like Chise said, you always need to save in PNG format. It makes your tags 100 times better. The only exception is if you need it to be animated.

And to Chise, I love your graphics, especially the first one with Link. I'm not that good with animations yet, so I'd liek to know how you did the Link one. Also, which program do you use?

At Dark_Kokiri. I like your signatures... sort of.

Brushing and texturing is cool and all, but there is a point when you have too much. Looking at those signatures you have, all but one of them seems a bit over brushed/textured to me. You do a great job of blending the image, better than I could do, but try easing up just a touch on the background stuff. The signature with the Shadow render is a great one though. :)

For my outlines, I use the "Path" or the "Pen" tool. I have a shakey hand so things don't always come out well when I use my graphics tablet to strait up draw. =P I use the path tool for the cell-shading as well...and I do something else to the shading but it's too hard to me to explain in words. XP

And nice siggy you got there, Guardian. I suggest taking the glow off the text and making the render more vivid in color, it doesn't really match the background. Pretty good, though!

@ Master Link: Ack, figures I would of landed at the bottom of the page. maybe that's for the better, those are pretty big graphics I posted. :lol:

I use Photoshop elements, and I also use Adobe Illustrator/ and Open Canvas for certain things that are harder to do in Elements. (Oc usually only for very fine lineart, and when I"m in the mood.. shading.)

Blinking and stuff is pretty easy to do. First just resize your render to your desired signature size.

Keep in mind that each layer will stand on it's own once you save it. Meaning, if you have text in it, and it's on another layer.. it will first show the graphic, then the text. So merge it all onto one, then copy paste it a bunch of times.

Then, edit the eyes to a shut position, then go to file > save for web and save it as an animated GIF. Make sure that "loop" is checked, and there you go! Blinking. :)

@DK- I can kind of see the shadow on this background, but it's hard I'll admit. I really like the colors you used for that sig, it's really pretty. Congrats on another SoTW win!

and I agree that this isn't exactly the ideal place to put Non-signature art, but this really is the most suitable place for now. I luv your art, and it's awesome that you can look at pretty much any of your pieces and tell that it was YOU who made them. Keep up the good work!

I need to put up some non-siggie art here if that's where it's suppose to go.. but maybe after finals. >.>; ::passes out::

@ Guardian: That's an adorable signature... I wanna pet the kitty. ; ^; Only suggestion is to move the font to the upper-left. Not only will it not be all covered up, but it will compliment the movement that the glowing lines create!

You have some very skillful copy pasting going on in that signature. It looks quiet natural, like it's an ordinary un-doctored screenshot. Your choice of color is quite interesting, but it proves that simplicity and text signatures for that matter, can rule if done correctly. :P

Okay, so after many failed attempts at trying to figure out how to make a sig, I made one. I wasn't able to successfully cut out the images I wanted, so I just stopped trying for a while. xP

Anyhoo, here it is:

It's really plain, doesn't have text, and is very amateurish (if even that). But being the first sig that I've made, I'm rather happy with it. =P I'm still experimenting with the different filters and other magical effects.

EDIT: I think the copy I made of it got changed a bit... It looks different than it did when I finished making it.

Background + tekst are kinda plain/random, and you should blend your render m8. I would recommend a brush sig tut. Most ps'ers ( and prob GIMP users ) start that way =]. Nice beginners try tho, tut's tut's tut's and keep practising.

The reason why it has changed is because you saved it in JPEG format. When you want to make it have better quality you need to save it .png

So yeah, because I am THAT cool, I decided to make my final piece for my GCSE art project something Zelda related. After a quick brain fart or two, I decided to make a big collage of a poe using only ripped up pages from magazines.

Am I mad? Yes.
Am I awesome? Probably not.

I think your poe looks very cool rupeeblue. It reminds me of a small classproject I had years ago where I had to create a monster with chickenfence and plaster it with paper and glue.

EDIT: I made a new signature thingie. I'm very proud with the background (since I made that myself :P). I also added the claw and the left shoulder. The original picture had the arms a bit lower and without them volvagia looks more like an angry snake :P

That actually looks like a decent desktop! I can see that you used the perspective tool a lot. I've never used it that much myself, but I can see how it works well in desktop wallpapers.

Smitie: Sweet Banner of Volvagia. My only problem with it is the green parts in the bottom left hand corner. They throw off the bottom part of Volvagia's mane slightly.

@ Smitie: Nice Volvagia signature, good render placement, triforce font is kinda overused tho. Overall good look, but needs a finishing touch like... ( Light source, depth etc).

@Sword of Faith: Lot of great ideas, but you should follow more tutorials. 1 tip: Tekst should never take a filling role on your sig background. Never. Font size 5 is readable.

You see the lighter part in my Fullmetal signature ? The light source(s) add light/schadow ( what makes depth ) in signatures. Just remember you have to make the light/schadow to correspond with the render, if the head of Volvagia has light on the left side and a darker tone on the right side...well you can guess were 2 put your lightsource xD

This is a commonly used 3-D animating engine. The workers at Sony, and a couple of others use this as a designing and animating engine.

Well, I guess I should release some artwork. I'm nowhere near a decent artist, so I decided to create my own art from scratch in GIMP. The only effects used were air brush, paint brush, pencil, and gradient. I made it for my blog, in which it talks about how water temples are the most frustrating, It depicts WW Link in the middle of the Great Sea. It took me an hour to draw this, considering I am terrible with both pencil and mouse. Without further ado, I present to you...uh...I have yet to name it, so my artwork...

Now that we are talking about 'art'. I just send an email to Juliet (from north castle) to submit some artwork that I have made. I post one of them as a small preview.

This is a korok concert :D. I was thinking about how it would look if every korok made music like Makar did. Here is the end result (I wanted to use imagetags, but the picture is too large). I first drew the koroks on paper using original art as a model, then I scanned it and colored it with gimp with the paintbrush. You will see this on North Castle sooner or later along with some other pictures that I made.

Well, using a similar technique to Smitie's, I have composed another piece of artwork. This time, I spent longer than an hour on this project, and made it entirely from scratch with no references (Except for the text. It says Bazaar in the HT Hylian font.). I sketched it out via pencil and card stock paper (More resistant to time), uploaded it into GIMP via a high resolution scanner, then simply colored it in. Over the course of two days, it took about three hours to complete. I call it Checking for Rupees.

Hi, bellum. You asked for tips, so I've got a few for you to start with:
1) Start with renders. This means images that have had their backgrounds removed.
2) Use images that have similar levels of brightness and contrast. For instance, don't use an image that is very vividly colored and then one that has dull colors. You want them to be balanced when you start.
3) Practice with light sources. If the light is coming from, say, the top-left, you want the light to highlight parts of the image that it hits.
4) Forget backgrounds. When you start out, it's never a good idea to jump into backgrounds, because you'll lose focus on what you're trying to work on. Just focus on making the main images blend well and either match or contrast.
5) Contrast is good! Sometimes a black and white image with a certain portion of it colored will look much better than a fully B&W or colored image. Just experiment.

By the way, that is Minda riding Wolf Link. I think the picture of Zant kinda ruined it, though. This is why I enjoy playing around with all of the little filters. Who knew pressing random buttons would lead to a decent result?:D

You'll want to download a good program first, like GIMP. GIMP is free. You can download it at their website: http://www.gimp.org/

After that you'll probably just wanna fool around with it for a bit, and get used to the program. Once you know some basics, google around for some GIMP signature tutorials. :)

I have always been pretty simplistic when it comes to desigining my signatures. The first forum I joined was Mortal Kombat Online, and the majority of my signatures over there consisted of pictures I would make out of sprites, backgrounds, etc, from the games. I like doing things like this, rather than making a big fancy signature. But I have made a few, especially here, that are all nice looking. Problem is, I don't use GIMP, because I prefer Photoshop, but I'm not shelling out near 1000 bucks for PS. So whenever I get the chance to download a trial, I make a few things.

Here are a few of the signatures that I used for a while, roughly in order.

Great stuff! Yeah, I was never too fond of shading myself, but when done and done well, it really does help give an extra dimension to pieces of art, especially comic / animation styled pieces. I think you did a great job here on it, it's not overpowering, and it's not too subtle, so it works well. It really helps make it seem as if you're looking upwards and it's flying overhead of you.

Keep at shading when you can though, and after awhile, you'll get used to it, and even welcome it! I find in my own work, it can turn a "meh..." piece to a "nice!" piece.

I think you need to start blending your images more, instead of doing effects of the same colour, making them deliberate stand-off's or sticking an overlay down. =P

Try and do some effects on a canvas, place your render, and then work on a layer which is ABOVE your render. Do effects around the edge of the render; if you Apply Image > Merged and then stick this on overlay, it will give you image much more dynamic colours which you may like.

That's why all my images are extremes e.g. very dark and grunge or very light and wavy ;)

I like what you where going for in that avatar though, making it seem like movement Im guessing? Thats very nice, I like it. Try pasting two renders in the same place next time, lower the opacity of the top one to 50% and move it a slight to the left/right. That should give good movement physics.

Then, break out a softbrush on about 20% and slowly brush away the very edges of this lower opacity render, then using the two renders as one and blend into the banner. Stay away from any layer effects though ;)

I have recently been teaching myself the wonders of the path tool in GIMP. It's very helpful for cutting out individual people from full pictures and for creating abstract shapes.

Here is a picture of Sasuke from Naruto that I created only with the path and pencil tools:

I am a bit dissapointed in the way it turned out; I made his face way too long and not wide enough. I should have used the burn tool to make it look more realistic but I had already spent 3 hours making it. What a total waste of my afternoon. :xd:

EDIT: The white outline wasn't there in GIMP. I guess it just showed up on this dark background.
