View Full Version : What Other "fandoms" Have You Been a Part Of?

What other fandoms have you been a part of, and what kind of activities did you do? If you are like my friend and listing them all would take all day, feel free to just mention favorites. *g*
For those who are unfamiliar with the term "fandom" - here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fandom) is the wikipedia entry. To me, it's just when your level of interactivity with other fans is fairly high.
My first fandom was Sailor Moon. That was also my first experience with fanfiction. I stumbled across an "alternate universe" fic and didn't know what to make of the concept but was intrigued. Eventually I wrote some myself. I wasn't so great at it, being a beginner, but both websites that used to house my stories are down, so at least it's not out there taunting me.
My next significant fandom was Pokemon, though more of the anime than the games (which I didn't have a lot of access to, though I did play Pokemon Red.) I wrote fic in that fandom, too, and I had a fan message board I used to frequent, though not one of the big ones. And I didn't intentionally set out to collect merchandise but a lot of my friends used to get me presents that were pokemon related, like my pikachu pillow.
I count Prince of Tennis - an anime - as a fandom despite my own definition. I didn't join many communities but I got a lot of merchandise, mostly tons and tons of trading cards. It's a little embarrassing the extent I went obtain them, actually, but they are still pretty.
And here I am at ZD, where I talk to you guys and try my hand at the occasional one-shot. I am enjoying hanging out here. :) I am also going to seek out a little merchandise, but I'm trying to be more sane about it than Prince of Tennis.
I have had plenty of other fannish interests - such as Harry Potter - but those are the ones I've been most interactive with (or merchandise-seeking) and stick out best in my mind.
Far too many in the past so i'll just generalise and pick on more recent ones.
Generally anything by CLAMP. Although at this point in time my interest revolves solely around the on-going HOLiC and a few re-reads that i'm doing of Chobits, X/1999 and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles.
Apart from those, I also have a keen interest in Neon Genesis Evangelion, more specifically the Datenroku spin-off which only has a chapter left, and Wolf's Rain which i'm re-watching.
In the past i've been in the fandoms of Pokemon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo and generally whatever was shown on the cartoon channels during my child room. Be it anime or the cartoons of Sonic, Mario and the like.
These days, during my re-reads and re-watches I generally RP on LJ comms from some of the fandoms. While I have the urge to write some more prompted fanfiction I simply don't have the time.
Of course, that's partially also due to the fact that I not only lurk around this forum set but also the tomb raider forums which says a little of where my video game interest happens to lie.

My fandom activity took place mostly in the following:
- LoZ
- Pokemon
- Hamtaro
- Invader Zim
- Ultra Maniac
- Lucky Star
I've had other minor interests, but those are the big ones.

I've been in the fandoms of Pokemon, Digimon (Sort of), Harry Potter, the Gorillaz (not anymore), Warriors, Ace Attorney, and Fullmetal Alchemist. This is in the order that I liked them too. :p

For a long time I was very much into the visual-kei/j-rock fandom, but then after a few bands got recognized in America, a swarm of ... well... not-so-great and fairly unintelligent fans hopped on the band wagon and the fanbase became even more divided than it was to begin with. I ended up leaving partially due to the elitism and the fact that my musical interests are constantly changing. Most of my money was spent on things like imported CDs (ranging from about $30-$50, plus shipping), and the Japanese music/fashion magazine called Cure. I still have a huge stack in my closet and I use a lot of the photos as references for drawings.
I was into Final Fantasy for a while, too. Mainly X and VII since it was a while before XII came out and most of us couldn't afford to keep up with FFXI which was online. VII was the craziest, though. I joined a forum that was based around the Compilation and the release of Advent Children. I wasn't particularly fond of anyone on the forums, though. Most of them came across as self-proclaimed intellects that were not afraid to outright bash anyone for making one trivial factual/grammatical error. X was okay, except I never bothered to join any communities since intellectual posts were few and far between at the time.
And now here I am at ZD. =) I think I like this fandom the most, particularly this community. I haven't encountered anyone who considers themselves to be above anyone else, nor have I met anyone that's completely out of their mind.

When I was younger it was into Star Wars but this was the old trilogy (makes me sound ancient :P ) and then I have been a huge Formula 1 fan for years. I even visited grand prix and bought things etc.
Later LOTR entered my life and I was and still am completely into it. I don't talk about it as often as I used to do but I still love it deeply. My whole house is a big LOTR orientated house. I have way too many stuff to name all.
And of course Hockey, Flyers and Lindros! My LOTR and Hockey obsession have made me find many great friends I cherish dearly.

Some of my fandoms have been The Legend of Zelda, Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot, Pokemon, Warriors, the "Tales of" series, Boktai, art, and random manga series such as Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles and Fullmetal Alchemist. That's pretty much the order they happened in but I still love all of them.

I guess the closest I have ever been to being part of another fandom is the Resident Evil series. If Zelda didn't exist, Resident Evil would be my favorite. I freakin' love that series. I'm obsessed with it like I am obsessed with Zelda. However, the closest I have ever been to being part of the Resident Evil fandom is posting in a couple RE threads back when Nintendo had its forums...
I've never been able to bring myself to participate in other fandoms... I don't know why. The fandoms themselves just don't interest me. So, while I may love other series like Resident Evil or Metroid, I haven't actually done anything more than make a few posts about them.

My first major gaming fandom was Pokemon, which dominated my gaming views for several months after I played Gold for the first time. I started collecting plushies, figures, posters...etc.
Secondly was Mario Kart Advanced, followed by the next fandom (and possibly the longest running one): Sonic.
The sonic games dominated my time for 9-10 months, I was completely obsessed. It was sonic this and sonic that. No other games in sight.
After a few more short fandoms, I moved on to Resident Evil, followed by Lord of the Rings, Animal Crossing, The Matrix, Zelda, several animes and TV shows, Zelda again and more recently- Portal.

Other than LoZ, the only other fandom that I've ever been really enthusiastic about was Pokemon, which I was obsessed with for all of my tween years and most of my teen years. Still a huge fan of the series, but not nearly as active in the fandom anymore. Before I got into Zelda a few years back Pokemon dominated my free time, games, manga, forums (used to be really active in a few of them), anime (for a short period of time), etc... Nowadays I just follow the news for the new games while playing the old ones from time to time.
Never actually joined another fandom besides these two, nothing else ever got me quite as obsessed, mostly because I can't contemplate joining non-gaming fandoms and I don't game that much to begin with.

Most of my fandom was manga/anime-related. Like Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, Naruto, CLAMP's series, etc... Mainly because manga was the first thing I touched when I learned how to read. They're like a part of my life now, and I can't imagine how I would live without them. when I read FMA or Naruto,... I felt like I was in the manga, I was that character, not just some side-standing person.
My second was LoZ (of course). Maybe I don't need to explain it, everyone here could understand as well as I am. :D
My third fandom was FF. I just got into the series recently (2 years), but I was completely impressed with the good (if not one of the best) storyline and the vast overworld. Also, there's a bunch of side quests to do, made it had the replay value. It's my second-best favorite series.

Definitely Lord of the Rings. I was really obsessed with it for a couple of years. I still enjoy rereading the books now and then :)

Lord of the Rings is my major one. That, and Harry Potter. I've been hugely into both of them on and off for years now. Those two and LoZ have always been my main ones, I think, other than a couple of music based ones. I really love going back and re-reading them all the time - they're very much comfort food for me.

My first was Pokemon. There was no way to avoid it. At my schools it got to the point where Pokemon cards were banned.
Another big one for me: Star Trek.
I can't get enough of it. Not the original series so much, but The Next Generation, Voyager and all 11 movies are really big hits for me.
I've begun investing in props too.
Another for me is Star Wars but not to the same degree as Pokemon, Star Trek or Zelda.

I've been a part of other fandoms besides just Zelda over the years. I can recall being a HUGE fan of Digimon when it premiered here in America. I remember writing fanfiction (this was before I even knew what fanfiction was! :xd: ) about it, drawing fanart, and I even got one of those "Digivices" that was kind of like a digital pet. A little while later, when I was still in the Digimon fandom, I got into the Beyblade fandom and I wrote some fanfiction for it and drew fanart. Currently I still do some fanart and fanfiction for that series too, it's just been a while since I've actually done some. And also, one of my most recent fandom is Avatar: The Last Airbender. I haven't officially written or draw any fanart or fanfiction, but I have made a short video for it that I have posted up on youtube (which I will probably never finish). Also currently I've gotten into the Fire Emblem fandom, (as you can tell by my sig and avatar), but I haven't draw, written, made videos, etc. anything about that fandom yet. But maybe soon... But yes, those are the other fandoms that I've been a part of.

Other than Zelda, I'm absolutely obsessed with Mario and Pirates of the Caribbean. Yeah, pretty much everyone loves Mario, but most people aren't obsessed with it and don't consider it the type of series that would have a "fandom" as big as other series'. I however collect as much Mario merchandise and games as I can find, and frequent Mario forums. I used to try to piece together the Mushroom Kingdom based on areas from each game. Yeah, I love Mario.
My Pirates of the Caribbean obsession isn't as bad lately, but I'm sure it'll flare up again when the next movie comes out. I've never been a member of any Pirates of the Caribbean forums, but I have tons and tons of merchandise.
I also used to be obsessed with Destroy all Humans, a not-very-popular videogame series that I doubt anybody here has heard of (well... maybe one person... I think =\). I was a member of one of those forums, no merchandise though. The games started descending into mediocrity and the latest installment of the series was only on the PS3 and 360, which I do not own, so I phased out of that.

The biggest Fandom I ever joined was that of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya way back in 2006. Other things followed, other Animes and Mangas. Pokemon and Zelda were my first, but they weren't big fandoms.
I didn't join any forums for that Oh no, I was an Otaku. I joined every possible Anime Cosplay event in Japan possible, even dance competitions. I also talked about the anime/manga 24/7, and I sometimes act like them for the heck of it. I even buy merchandise, well some of them.
As of now, My fandom has been flaming out of control, as each anime and manga I watch or read ends, I continue on another and watch and read more. It's like I'm a scouter. I blame my otaku-ness. Other than The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, I joined other fandoms of Lucky Star, Sekirei, Birdy the Mighty Decode, Rosario + Vampire, To Love Ru, Naruto, Bleach, and many many MANY more.
Currently I'm catching up with Nico Nico Douga Anime/Game/J-POP/Manga Music videos, like Kumikyoku, Ryuuseigun, Nanairo, Monogatari etc. They are just a mash up of every single song related to what I said, but are put together to create one lone music video of epic proportions.

Tim Burton (and all of his work) was (and still is) my first and greatest fandom.
Next is Zelda, then Harry Potter.. then last Percy Jackson & The Olympians. (:
Oh, and if dance counts.. that actually goes first.

POKEMON.
Seriously, you should have seen eight-year-old me in my Pokemon obsession era. I was insane. Insaaane I tell you.
This was me: obsessive waiting for new episodes, trading Pokemon cards like an insane person, wearing a Pikachu costume over and over even though it wasn't Halloween, repeating whatever Ash, Misty or Brock said, roleplaying Pokemon, having Pokemon themed everything including THREE different birthdays, re-watching old tapes of the Pokemon anime for hours on end, playing Pokemon games until my eyes were too tired to stay open, collecting all things related to Pokemon and just being plain OBSEEESSEEED.
I was a true Pokemon fanatic.
I still love Pokemon. I play the games rather fanatically still and collect a few pieces of fandom here and there.
But I'm nowhere NEAR as bad as I used to be. Thankfully. X>

I was looking through my Deviant Art file for a picture I used to have of myself in cosplay, but I seem to have gotten rid of it. Anyway...
Fandoms.
Yes, I've been in the online fandom-game for a long time... over ten years, actually.
My first was Pokemon. - Specifically, the Pokemon anime. I didn't have access to the games until Gold/Silver. The anime was the first thing I did fan fiction for (though my very first fan fictions were crossovers with The X-Files, which I was also a huge fan of at them). I'll still consider Pokemon my "First Fandom" because it was the first one I really interacted with people with/ went to disscussion boards for and really got heavy into doing art and fiction writing for. It's strange... I was already in community college when I discovered it, a bit "old" for the Pokemon-set, but as I'm fond of saying, age doesn't keep me from what I think is fun. I actually met my fiance' in this fandom - he's older than I am and was doing some very epic and rather mature (not porn you pervs, heavy-themed!) Pokemon fan fiction. He actually created a "Black Lugia" before it was canon.
Pokemon was my gateway drug into other anime... and then I discovered Trigun. Goodbye 7-8 years of my life. I really got HARDCORE into Trigun. I fell in love with the anime, did lots of fan fiction and fan art for it.... collected all the manga in English (and Bob got me a few of the mangas in Japanese, including one he got signed by the author at a convention)... I paid a friend to make me a cosplay coat so I could CROSS-play Vash the Stampede (Crossplay is when you cosplay a character of the opposite sex). I got that coat signed by the Trigun anime's director at Anime Expo 2003. Did I mention I was *seriously* into Trigun yet?
-- I'm actually kind of still into it, just not as heavy. What I mean by that is that I still enjoy the source-material. I still whip out the anime to watch every now and again, and I re-read my mangas. However, this is the fandom that nearly killed me on "fandom." It is a testement, I think, to how awesome the source material is that I still like it. The "fandom" (interaction with other fans on the Internet) almost made me hate it. I had a VERY rough time in this fandom... between a "friend" who latched onto my coat-tails because she liked my fanfiction and got me into trouble with people who didn't like "dark" fic... to getting myself in trouble with these people... to stupid fights over shipping.... to trying to tell people, "No, Vash being in the same picture as an empty ashtray does *not* mean that I have to believe that he and Wolfwood are shaking up in canon as some super secret yaoi conspiracy," to having my name bandied about as a byword on Fandom Wank (mostly because of my unfortunate friendship), to having this "firend" turn on me like a rabid dog and drag my guy through the mud over a fic he wrote as a present to me... Gah... *Tears hair out.* Seriously, this fsking fandom is why I was very *shy* at first joining Zelda Dungeon or involving myself too heavily in Zelda fandom. I was so scared that it was going to be another Trigun fandom experience for me. As it is, this is one of only two message forums I go to on a regular basis and the other one is tiny and largely inactive. On the plus side, some of my closest online friends (AIM buddies) were people I met in Trigun fandom, so it wasn't all bad. Some of them suffered the same wounds that I did.
And now, I'm into The Legend of Zelda as a fandom and am pleased and surprised by just how GOOD it's been for me. You people are awesome, just the best! Thank you for the much-needed healing! My fan fiction and fan art can be found at the locations in my signiture.

Other than Zelda, I actually haven't been too involved in fandoms. I went to a Nintendo forum, so I guess I've been in a general Nintendo fandom for a long time. Other than Nintendo and Zelda, none really. I had some involvement in the Mega Man community for a while.
I'm a titanic fan of a lot of things, I've just never jumped into fandoms. I love Bleach, Gurren Lagann, Doctor Who, Fullmetal Alchemist, etc. enough to be in a fandom though. :P

Believe it or not, my first fandom is The Legend of Zelda. I suppose you could say I was into Pokémon for a while, but I didn't go into anything as extreme as a forum, so I don't really count it as a Fandom.
