Whattup, ZI fans? It’s time again for another entry in our weekly Photoshop Contest. I don’t know about you, but I am absolutely stoked to watch Straight Outta Compton tonight. With this hit film releasing this weekend, we figured there was no better time than now to infuse some West Coast rap attitudes into the Zelda series. So if you want to ‘shop some hip-hop images of Link and the posse, grab an 8-Ball and head inside. We’ll of course also take a look at the retro goodness from last week’s contest: Pixel Adventure.

Last Week’s Contest:

Inspired by the retro nostalgia we’ve seen in pop culture lately, we asked contestants to produce images using classic sprites from the earliest Zelda games. The premise may sound simple, but the winners definitely produced some creative entries.

Challenge Mode

Much like a previous Photoshop Contest, last week’s challenge was to recreate a scene from a 3D Zelda title using classic sprites. Artist Thomas Nichols decided to recreate the climactic showdown between Link and Ganon at the end of Ocarina of Time. The pixel version of Navi was definitely a nice touch. Good job!

This Week’s Contest: Straight Outta Hyrule

“Cruisin’ down the street in my ’64.” These few words kick started the career of perhaps the most influential West Coast rap group N.W.A., a group of musicians that opened the book on street knowledge and shared some choice words about law enforcement. With the release of Straight Outta Compton this weekend, fans can watch this impactful career unfold on the big screen, and the internet is definitely excited. Even Zelda Informer’s Facebook page has seen the product of this excitement.

So, in honor of “the world’s most dangerous group,” the Photoshop Contest this week will be to add some hip hop stylings and West Coast attitudes to The Legend of Zelda. Whether you put some gold chains on Tingle or place Link on the hard streets of South Central L.A., just make sure your entry has the same spirit as the group that gave us hits like “Gangsta Gangsta” and “Boyz-N-the-Hood.” Hit up the image gallery below to start, and feel free to use anything else from the internet to craft your image.
