Wind Waker For The iPad?

JesseFebruary 2nd, 2012 by Jesse

Our great friends at Zelda Universe have come across an unusual find. A game is in development for portable Apple devices and may seem a bit too familiar to Zelda fans. While the game is not related to the Zelda franchise in anyway, it does share some common ground with a few games from the series. The all touch controls, cartoon style graphics, heart containers, and top down view of a young boy with a sword definitely brings Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks to mind.

The title of this Wind Waker look alike is Oceanhorn and aside from it borrowing a few aspects from the Zelda series, it looks like it would be a fantastic game for those who own an Ipad. Jump inside to read more and a watch some short gameplay footage.

Zelda Universe-25 Years in 25 Days: 2009

ChristinaNovember 17th, 2011 by Christina

Zelda Universe’s 25 Years in 25 Days is winding down as we approach the Skyward Sword release this weekend. Today’s year is 2009 and not only did we see a brand new game for the DS, but we got to experience one of the most elaborate fan-made Zelda projects of the time. Spirit Tracks was released this year and although it fixed many of the problems that were found in Phantom Hourglass, fans still found things to be upset about. Many thought the game was too high-tech with the incorporation of the train system and others complained that it looked exactly the same as Phantom Hourglass.

Also, in 2009, BMB Finishes released a fan-made, full-length feature film that was loosely based on the story of Ocarina of Time. That film was known as The Hero of Time. Many fans were excited about this movie and it received so much attention that eventually Nintendo got wind of it. They decided that it was too big of a production and at the end of the year, they asked BMB Finishes to remove it from the internet. Finally, the last thing to happen in 2009 came during E3 when a picture was revealed of what was known then as Zelda Wii. Head over to Zelda Universe to read the entire article and to share your thoughts. If you happened to miss any of the previous articles, click here to read them all.

Spirit TracksRemember when Spirit Tracks was all the hype? The forums are looking back to that time and discussing if all of that hype was for the right reason. It’s commonly debated the Spirit Tracks is one of the lesser Zelda games in the series, and everybody is pitching in their own ideas. This week’s featured thread is Spirit Tracks Afterthoughts. What did you end up thinking about the game? Do you think it was over-hyped for what you ended up getting? Register on our forums and tell us what you thought about this portable Zelda. Here’s what some other people thought to get you started.

Spirit Tracks: One Year Later

MasesDecember 7th, 2010 by Mases

Spirit Tracks Box ArtworkExactly one year ago to this day, Spirit Tracks was released for the Nintendo DS. Initially, it was met with a rather diverse set of reviews by many gamers. Many hardcore Zelda fans considered it a huge upgrade over the previous Zelda DS title, Phantom Hourglass. Many others thought it was in the same vein as Phantom Hourglass, a big disappointment. While others thought it was just another amazing Zelda title added to the series. So one year later, what does Spirit Tracks bring to the table?

From a critical standpoint, you could say that Spirit Tracks was a failure. Now of course, this is all very relative, as when I use the term failure, I’m comparing it to other Zelda titles, and not all DS games. At Game Rankings.com, Spirit Tracks scores at an 86.92%, and at a similar website Meta Critic, the game comes in at an 87. These are hardly bad scores, but when you compare them to the rest of the Legend of Zelda series, they are not up to standard. In fact, not counting the Four Swords Spin-Offs, or the original NES Zelda games which simply don’t have enough reviews, Spirit Tracks has the worst critical ratings of any main series Zelda title to date.

Phantom Hourglass ArtworkSo which Zelda game did you prefer, Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks? Yesterdays post showed that Phantom Hourglass greatly outsold Spirit Tracks, but does this mean that it was necessarily a better game? The folks over at Twilight Lynk have recently put up a Game Spotlight where they look at both titles side by side and decide which they prefer is the better of the two. Here is what the author of the article had to say about each game.

Phantom Hourglass is an enjoyable game, but definitely not among my favourite Zelda games. The inclusion of The Wind Waker crew as well as the addition of Linebeck carried the story along for me, and the touchscreen controls and clever little gameplay mechanics were enjoyable. I’m glad we were given the chance to see where the Hero of Winds ended up after The Wind Waker.

Playing Spirit Tracks is an exhausting and disappointing experience for many reasons. With games you enjoy, you don’t mind that they end up taking longer than expected to finish because you don’t really want it to end. I’ve found that Spirit Tracks is the opposite for me… it just keeps on going when I want it to end so I can get it over with already!

Spirit Tracks Box ArtworkWhen it comes to sales, Phantom Hourglass was considered highly successful, having surpassed 4.5milliion units sold across the world. Spirit Tracks was its spiritual successor having used the same game engine, being a direct story sequel, and having been released just two years after Phantom Hourglass hit shelves. When Spirit Tracks was released late last year, it was given mostly positive reviews, and while its ratings were lower than many previous Zelda titles, it still had a collective score of 87% on Game Rankings.

However, even with more Nintendo DS systems out in the market and even after Phantom Hourglass was out in stores for years having been a success, Spirit Tracks simply did not sell nearly as well. After being on the market for just about six months, you can tell by the chart below exactly where Spirit Tracks stands and how Phantom Hourglass also stands. As you can see, in the next week or two Phantom Hourglass will have officially past Spirit Tracks in sales in terms of how many weeks it has been on the market.

Spirit Tracks Box ArtworkThanks to Avenged, former webmaster of Zelda Dungeon, and current webmaster of Zelda Chronicles for sending in this news bit to us. In the latest issue of Nintendo Power, there was an interview with Spirit Tracks Director Daiki Iwamoto. Within the interview itself, there were quite a few interesting tidbits and shown below is one tidbit in regards to the items in Spirit Tracks.

“When coming up with items, our basic policy was to make all the items new ones, except for things that were a hit in the last game and things we might still be able to use to propose new ways of playing. We kept the boomerang, bow and bombs, and got rid of the grappling hook, Bombchus, and hammer. Then we started by thinking up three items to replace the ones we’d discarded. As much as possible, we specifically tried to think of things with DS-specialized functions, and things that could be used in a number of different ways. We come up with the puzzles not beforehand, but while we think up the item functions and examine the ideas those items give us.”

I liked the new items that they included and thought in general it was one of the high points of the game. It would have been nice to get a couple new ones as well, or perhaps more optional ones that could be used for fun or in side quests. The inventory was kind of small, much like Phantom Hourglass, but I thought the items were each done justice with the amount they were actually used. You can check out the rest of the interview of over at our affiliate Zelda Chronicles.

Spirit Tracks Box ArtworkSpirit Tracks has really settled for most Zelda enthusiasts with many of us having already completed the game several times. Many Zelda fans were disappointed with Phantom Hourglass, yet they viewed Spirit Tracks as a form of redemption for Nintendo. One of the guys over at The Kartel has a much different approach and feels that Spirit Tracks was a big step back for Nintendo after what he thought was a very successful Phantom Hourglass.

“An optimistic view of Spirit Tracks might see it as nothing but a sophomore misfire. Hourglass taught that Stylus-driven Zelda can be great, and Tracks warned that it’s not inherently great. Hopefully the next DS Zelda installment will take the innovations of Phantom Hourglass and use them to craft an adventure that avoids the plodding mediocrity of riding the Spirit Tracks.”

Spirit Tracks: A Handheld Chore?

MasesFebruary 26th, 2010 by Mases
Spirit Tracks European Box Artwork

Over the last three months there has been dozens of Spirit Tracks reviews and the vast majority of them have been positive. However, now that the game has had time to settle in the minds of gamers, we can almost start looking back at Spirit Tracks in the past tense, rather than as a current game. Richard Poskozim of The Lantern has put together a recent review of Spirit Tracks and unlike most reviewers, he spends a heck of a lot more time focusing on the weaker points in Spirit Tracks, rather than its strong points. Below is a quick excerpt of his article.

Sadly, Link’s shiny new “spirit train” quickly becomes the game’s major frustration, easily trumping simplistic puzzles and ridiculous character design. Every traversable area of the game is only accessible by the tracks, and for the most part nothing happens on the not-so-scenic treks from one side of the huge world map to the other. There’s just enough annoying little enemies to blow away with a cannon to keep players from leaving their DSes on and getting a drink while they wait, but not nearly enough to keep things entertaining.

For me, I really did enjoy Spirit Tracks at release, but now that things have settled, there are numerous things that really bug me and I pointed some of them out in a video blog several weeks back. In general, I feel the dungeons and the music were just amazing, but much of the rest of the game fell short. It has its bright spots, but I think it has settled to where I think its placement on my favorite Zelda list is on par with that of its predecessor, Phantom Hourglass, if not lower.

What do you guys think of the review. Was it a fair look at Spirit Tracks? Did you enjoy the things that the writer was frustrated with? Where does Spirit Tracks fit on your lists of favorite Zelda titles? Read more…

Zelda Reorchestrated – Final Train Exam

MasesFebruary 23rd, 2010 by Mases

The guys over at Zelda Reorchestrated released their sixth track from the Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks, and it is the Final Train Exam theme. This is the very first theme that you hear when you first step onto the train with Alfonzo early in the game. It’s a pretty good listen and it’s done very well.

If you are a big fan of the music from the Legend of Zelda series, you can subscribe to the Music of Zelda YouTube channel. The channel is rather empty right now, but will be providing a variety of Zelda music songs, reorchestrated material, and other fan submitted tracks.

In my opinion, the music of Spirit Tracks was a big step up in comparison to the music from Phantom Hourglass. Unlike Phantom Hourglass, I thought there were numerous songs that were memorable and even after completing the game I can remember them. I played through Phantom Hourglass several times, but there really are only a select few songs that I even know by memory. So what did you all think of the music from Spirit Tracks? How do you think it ranks up against Phantom Hourglass and the other Zelda titles?

Spirit Tracks: Worst Zelda To Date

Spirit Tracks European Box Artwork

Just the other day I was looking over at GameRankings.com, a site that offers links to all the various reviews of a particular game, and it combines them to form an aggregated score. In particular I was looking to see how the various Zelda games racked up against one another, and the results I found were a bit surprising. It was no shock that Ocarina of Time topped the list, but how the games fell in line afterwords, was a bit surprising.

Spirit Tracks Concept Artwork Leaked

MasesFebruary 13th, 2010 by Mases
Spirit Tracks Concept Artwork

Several pieces of concept artwork were leaked by a Nintendo employee and were posted over at the NeoGAF Forums. One of the pieces includes artwork from our beloved Spirit Tracks. The leaked image is pictured to the right and you can click on it to get a larger view.

The image includes several pieces of concept artwork from the Tower of Spirits. It also has some artwork of the train scenery, as well as some artwork of the actual Spirit Train. The artwork looks rather sweet and the fact that this even exists, tells me that there is probably a heck of a lot more concept artwork for Spirit Tracks that has yet to see the light of day. I’m a huge fan of some of the official artwork and concept artwork and I’d really love to see them get released some day for the public to see. With this recent leak there was also several more images leaked of other Nintendo games and you can view them at the NeoGAF Forums.

Spirit Tracks Artwork: 14 New Pieces!

MasesJanuary 22nd, 2010 by Mases
Red ChuChu Artwork

I have added 14 new fan artwork pieces to our Spirit Tracks Enemy Gallery. The image you see to your right is one of my favorite submissions that we have gotten thus far. It is a well drawn Red ChuChu from Spirit Tracks. If I didn’t tell you it was fan artwork, you might guess it is actually official Nintendo artwork since it’s just that brilliant. You can view a larger image of it below, along with several other featured images for this month. Another personal favorite of mine is the Keymaster created by defno as it is really well done. Remember, you can post a comment about each piece of artwork on its individual gallery page.

With these new artwork pieces now available, we have gone ahead and updated our Enemy Artwork Projects Page. This brings are total number of artwork images to 107! We still have a ways to go, but we now have six enemies which I view as being complete, along with a handful of enemies that are almost there. If you’d like to help us out in this ongoing project, just check out the page, find an enemy you’d like, and draw it up however you imagine it. Regardless of your talent ability, I’ll post it up in our gallery! Read more…

Eiji Aonuma

In a recent interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Eiji Aonuma talks about the upcoming Legend of Zelda title for the Nintendo Wii and the recently released Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks for the Nintendo DS. Aonuma talks a lot about the development process of both Spirit Tracks and Zelda Wii and also talks about the future plans for the Zelda development teams.

Are you happy with the finished game? Is there anything in Spirit Tracks that you’d go back and change?

“One of the most important missions with this game was to complete a new DS version of Zelda in a relatively short time period. To tell you the truth, with the train line aspect of the game, it is brand new for the Legend of Zelda and it ended up occupying almost half of the total development period.

In other words, it was just about one year ago when we were able to start working on anything other than the train ride aspect of this game. I am really, really glad and very proud of our staff who were able to complete the missions with such a limited amount of time and still they are able to make such high quality software… after finishing the title and playing the game myself I am very proud of it.

Having said that however, whenever we complete work on a piece of software, I almost always feel that we could have changed this, or we should have done that, or that something should be incorporated into a future game. It is always the case and this time around was no different, but now our sentiment is that we are glad it is finished and probably, in the near future, we will feel like making something new.”

Spirit Tracks Content Updates

MasesJanuary 15th, 2010 by Mases
Spirit Tracks Screenshot

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks has been out for over a month now and we have started to move back into our regular flow of site updates. However, there are still a ton of Spirit Tracks content projects going on and we got a few of them ready for today.

My fellow Webmaster Caleb is finally back after a couple weeks off due to some evil computer issues. He’s now right back in the swing of things and Chapter 4 of our Spirit Tracks guide is now filled with beautiful maps and screenshots. Additionally, the text for Chapters 10-12 of the guide are now 100% complete. This finishes off the text of the entire guide, which now includes all items, upgrades, treasure chests, stamp stations, rabbits, etc…

Additionally, we have updated our Treasures page and we have added a Train Parts page for the game. Neither page is fully complete yet as they still need to be filled up with relevant images, but the text for both has come along nicely.

That’s about it for now but be sure to check back often as we finish off some of our Spirit Tracks content and provide more general Zelda material. In the meantime, why not take a stop at our growing Zelda Forum Community! The boards have been more active than ever before in the last month so now is a great time to jump right in.

Huge Enemy Artwork Update

Stagnox Artwork

We have 23 new pieces of enemy fan artwork for Spirit Tracks today and they are all listed below. Feel free to check them out at our image gallery where you can also post comments on each individual image.

Pictured to the left is an image of the Forest Temple boss, Stagnox, drawn by artist defno. It is one of my personal favorites as Stagnox seems to be a rather difficult boss to draw, yet this pieces of artwork is really nice. Another one that stands out to me is the Nocturn drawn by Olive. When creating the fan artwork page and posting images of the enemies, I found that drawing a Nocturn would be incredibly hard since we never even get a good view of this enemy in the game. However, this fan artwork drawing really does a great job in my opinion.

Spirit Tracks Screenshot

We are still chugging along on our Spirit Tracks Walkthrough and today I have a notable update to the guide. Chapters 8 and 9 of the walkthrough have received major upgrades and now chapters 1-9 are complete guides, walking you through the main quest, while also gathering all the force gems, rabbits, stamps, treasure chests, and more! Chapters 8 and 9 in particular have an enormous amount of side quests.

Chapters 10-12 are online and are complete in covering the main quest through the game. However, we are still working diligently to try and get these final chapters completed 100%. This should be completed this coming week so stay tuned. In the mean time, if you are still feeling the Spirit Tracks craze yourself, head on over to our Spirit Tracks Forum to discuss the game with other Zelda fans.

Site Updates, Spirit Tracks Content

MasesDecember 28th, 2009 by Mases
Spirit Tracks Screenshot

Hey all, got a few things to update on today. First off, I’d like to apologize for the downtime that we had much of yesterday. After Christmas we had such a surge in visitors that our server was unable to handle the extra load. Fortunately enough, our great host, Atomic Gamer was able to quickly remedy the situation by moving us to a new server. The forums have also since been restored and the site should be fully functional. I sure this this is the end of our hosting issues.

Now, on to some new content! Chapters 1-7 of the Spirit Tracks Walkthrough have received a textual overhaul. The first 7 chapters are now 100% complete, taking you through the main quest, gathering all the heart containers, stamps, rabbits, force gems, etc… Chapters 8-12 are still being worked on, but they do already cover the complete main quest. They are just missing most of the side quests. We hope to get to that soon!

We’ve hit a bit of a speed bump the last week or so. Caleb has been out of commission due to some computer problems, and our other Webmaster Dabombster has been out for much of the last month due to various reasons. We’ve fallen a bit behind our intended schedule, but rest assured we are still working hard to get new Spirit Tracks content out as soon as possible!

Thanks for bearing with us during our tough times and check back soon. Remember, Zelda Dungeon is your Spirit Tracks Headquarters!

While the text for the Spirit Tracks guide has been complete for over a week now, we are still making constant updates to some of the chapters. Chapter 3, which covers Link’s second journey through the Tower of Spirits, is now nearly 100% complete! It has been formatted and now includes tons of screenshots, maps, and fancy boxes. Additionally, chapters 4 and have 5 have received a textual overhaul, as they now include numerous side quests and secrets that are found within the game. Walkthrough Update!

MasesDecember 18th, 2009 by Mases
Spirit Tracks Screenshot

We’ve been making a lot of edits to our Spirit Tracks Walkthrough over the last several days. When the walkthrough was first written, it was designed so that you could play through the entire game with a step by step guide to completing the main quest. We completed that just shortly after the games release and now we are in the process of going through the entire guide and revamping many of the sections to include all the extra heart containers and side quests along the way.

In the mean time, we are also formatting and adding screenshots to some of the chapters. I’m happy to say that chapter 2 of the walkthrough has been upgraded and is now near complete, filled with maps, screenshots, and several boxes for all the items and enemies found within the dungeon. Additionally, work has begun on the following chapter of the game which covers Link’s second visit through the Temple of Spirits. We are also editing our entirely text version of the walkthrough for Spirit Tracks, which we are posting at various other gaming websites on the net. As always, we’ll be continuing to upgrade our Spirit Tracks content over the next several weeks.

While we are still hard at work on our Spirit Tracks Walkthrough, there sure is a lot of other things going on within the online Zelda community in regards to Spirit Tracks. Our good friends at Zelda Power have launched their Spirit Tracks Music section at their site and it includes over 30 mp3 files from the game!

That’s not all on the music front. The guys over at Zelda Reorchestrated have released two orchestrations from Spirits Tracks. One being the Soundscape Redux from the Spirit Tracks Trailer and the other being the Aboda Village theme. Check them out below!

I have also added a placeholder page for the Spirit Tracks Rabbit Locations. More Spirit Tracks Content is on its way!

Spirit Tracks: New Content!

We have several updated pieces of Spirit Tracks content available for you today. We are still working hard on our Spirit Tracks Walkthrough and chapter two has received quite an upgrade and is nearly complete. Chapter two of the walkthrough covers up through the Forest Temple. We’ve also recently completed a purely text format of our walkthrough and we have submitted it to various online gaming websites including GameFAQ’s.

Here at the site though, we have several other new or upgraded pieces of content. Our Spirit Tracks Boss Guide is now nearly complete with images for just about all the bosses. Additionally, our Spirit Tracks Enemy Guide has been updated with several higher quality images and the inclusion of more of the enemies found.

Lastly, we have a brand new piece of content in the Spirit Tracks Force Gems page at the site. There are 20 Force Gems in the game and each gem that you collect will restore a new section of the Spirit Tracks allowing you to reach hidden train stations, find new rabbits, and acquire new items and heart containers. This page is still a place holder page and we plan on improving on it over the coming weeks. Be sure to check back at Zelda Dungeon over the next few days as we continue to add fresh new Spirit Tracks content.

Spirit Tracks Enemy Artwork

While the staff here at Zelda Dungeon is still hard at work on our Spirit Tracks Walkthrough, there are a lot of other things going on here at the site and within the online Zelda community. A few weeks back I mentioned a project we were working on to gather as much fan artwork for the enemies within Spirit Tracks. After making the post, I’ve gotten over 15 submissions and many of them are now available in our Spirit Tracks Enemy Artwork Gallery!. One such piece can be seen on the right side, and it depicts a Bulblin Rider. Be sure to head on over to our gallery to see the rest of the images, where you can also post comments on each individual piece!

This gallery portion relaunches the Zelda Dungeon Fan Artwork section of the website. We are taking a different approach to fan artwork this time around, and we are focusing only on specific site related projects, rather than having open fan artwork. Other sites, such as North Castle and the popular deviantART already handle that pretty well. So we will be focusing on specific projects and our first one has already begun. Head on over to the Spirit Tracks Enemy Artwork Project to find out more information on how you can contribute!

That’s not all! While we here at Zelda Dungeon are in the midst of a Spirit Tracks craze, we aren’t the only ones in the community chugging out new Zelda material. Our friends over at Zelda Universe are working on a Walkthrough of their own for Spirit Tracks. Additionally, they just launched what will become a weekly Comics section at the site, which will feature comics about the Legend of Zelda series, as well as about specific members of their own fan community.

It surely is a good time to be a Zelda fan. Hope you all are enjoying Spirit Tracks! We’ll be updating many times over the weekend with the newest batch of Spirit Tracks content!

After many days of sleep deprivation, our Spirit Tracks Walkthrough is now complete! Chapter 11 covers the Tower of Spirits Part 6 and the final chapter covers the Dark Realm. Additionally, work on formatting the second chapter, the Forest Realm has progressed a bit and now includes everything up until the Forest Temple.

I’ve also put together a temporary page for all of the Spirits Tracks Stamp Stations. This is one of the collectible items found within Spirit Tracks. The guide includes all 20 locations, as well as the three prizes that Link can earn. Check back at Zelda Dungeon as we will be editing our Spirit Tracks content over the next few days!

Hey guys, today is the real big day for a lot of you. Spirit Tracks is officially out in all retailers in the United States, so head on over to your local game stores and pick up this amazing Zelda title.

Here at Zelda Dungeon we are still hard at work on our Spirit Tracks Walkthrough. Today we have added chapter 8 of the walkthrough, which covers the 4th temple, the Fire Temple. (not counting the Temple of Spirits).

Additionally, we’ve put up a placeholder page for all of the Heart Containers that you’ll find in the game. Much like Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks does not have pieces of heart, but rather, just full heart containers. Link starts with three hearts and can get all the way up to sixteen of them. Five of them are found after defeating the temples in the game, while the other eight are through mini-games and other quests. Stay tuned as we will be updating our Spirit Tracks Content all week here at Zelda Dungeon! Go out and enjoy Spirit Tracks!

We have been hard at work on our Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks Walkthrough for much of the past several days and we have several chapters available to you all. We have text chapters available for the first seven chapters of the walkthrough. This includes everything up to the third temple of the game, the Ocean Temple, as well as the journey through the Temple of Spirits for the 4th time.

However, our walkthrough pages are under heavy construction and they are going to be constantly updated over the next few weeks as we add more text, screenshots, proper formatting, as well as all the various side quests in the game. So stay tuned! The first chapter of our walkthrough is not quite complete, but it’s upwards around 80% complete. This is a short glimpse of what is to be expected by the time the long journey of writing the walkthrough is complete.

Spirit Tracks Scores 4.5 out of 5

More reviews of the Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks are starting to flow in and it is giving us a really good idea on what to expect from the game. This latest review from the guys at Just Push Play. Nothing at this point is going to seem outrageously new after reading a review, but its nice to see what other peoples perspectives of a game are. Here is a quick quote on what they had to say about the game.

The Legend of Zelda: The Spirit Tracks is a title that every Zelda fan should get. There is nothing ground breaking that players should be surprised about however. Fans that played Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass shouldn’t have a hard time playing through it. Navigating the train is indeed a fresh way to travel through the land of Hyrule, but anything besides that will have the same feel as when you played the two games. Nevertheless, The Legend of Zelda: The Spirit Tracks is a must get DS game for this holiday.

Spirit Tracks is set to ship in just TWO DAYS! We are already hard at work here at Zelda Dungeon working on our Spirit Tracks Walkthrough and we should have the first chapter available right when the game hits store shelves! Be sure to check back soon!
