In a recent interview, Eiji Aonuma stated that Link was merely a vessel, and that the protagonist was the player. Since then, Link’s physical appearance has been a common topic of discussion. The concept of Link being a female, a Gerudo, even an entirely different species have made their way into fan discussions, art, and fanfiction.

With these ideas afloat, and Aonuma starting to listen to his fans more, the question is: what will Link look like in future installments? Aonuma’s statement has made me wonder if the idea of the “player” being the Hero would clear up the controversy of Link’s gender, race, size, and everything else that seems to stir up the public. He has already opened the world up in a classic RPG style, and has even talked of a leveling system for weapons in Zelda U.

Is it possible that the next installment would bring the RPG aspects full circle and give Link customizable attributes, allowing the player to experience Hyrule as the Hero they choose to be? Or would breaking the standard appearance turn people away from a now unfamiliar series? Would you prefer Link to stay a blond-haired, blue-eyed, coming of age “vessel”? Or, do you want to create your own version of Link? Leave your thoughts and discuss it in the comment section below!
