After Twilight Princess had come out, fans asked Eiji Aonuma if there would be another Zelda on the Wii, but didn't receive much of an answer. However, in a private meeting at E3 2007 he began to discuss Skyward Sword, known at the time only as "Zelda Wii" but was withheld from revealing too much. Shigeru Miyamoto left a tantalizing hint that Twilight Princess would be "without a doubt, the last Zelda game as you know it in its present form." What this meant was unclear and from it began a series of wild speculations about what Zelda Wii would be like. In the 2009 E3, Miyamoto revealed an infamous piece of artwork for "Zelda Wii" depicting a swordless Link along with Fi in Twilight Princess' artstyle and promising to reveal the game at next E3. This lead to more speculation until E3 2010 when Skyward Sword was fully unveiled.

Boasting Wii Motion Plus controls and themes borrowed from throughout the series, Skyward Sword is touted by its creators as being a satisfying combination of old and new ideas for the Zelda series, implementing many new gameplay concepts to make it a more fresh and unique experience, in an effort to make it the best Zelda game ever. It also has an impressionist artstyle that vaguely resembles a cross between The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

Taking place before Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword tells a story of classmates Link and Zelda from a village in the sky world village known as Skyloft. This marks the first game in the Zelda series where the titular character is not a princess, but a normal denizen of Skyloft. Near the beginning of the game, Zelda is taken away, and Link arms himself with the Skyward Sword and seeks her out, traveling across sky and surface as he and the mysterious enemy Ghirahim pursue her. Skyward Sword ties into many elements from Ocarina of Time as well as the rest of the series, including the origin of the pivotal Master Sword.
