This section of the walkthrough covers the Northeast Quadrant, various sidequests, including Maze Island and the Swordman's Scroll,
and then the Isle of the Dead.
- Now that we have the northeastern sea chart, new sidequests have opened up for
us and it starts at Harrow Island.
~ Harrow Island ~
- Two more treasure maps can be found with both
of the sunken treasures located in the northeastern quadrant. Sail on over and
pay the 50 rupees to play the game. It may take you a few tries but just keep
digging as the treasure maps do come up relatively often.
New Item: Treasure Map #24
Harrow Island
- This map shows the location of a sunken treasure in the
northeast quadrant of the Great Sea!
- Now that Link can sail into the northeast quadrant, he also has access the to
top-right corner of the northwest quadrant, which was previously unreachable.
This lets Link reach a lot of new sunken treasure that he couldn’t reach before.
So now is a good time to catch up on all the various sunken treasure that we can
get from the different treasure maps.

~ The Great Sea ~
- Now that we are sailing in this new quadrant, we can bump into the 6th and final
golden frog. There are three small rocks near the bottom-right of the quadrant.
The golden frog is northwest of the southern most golden frog. Hit it with your
cannon and it will hold up the cyclone warp sign. It is an awkward looking
shape. It is almost like a square, except the left side is slanted inwards. Be
sure to mark it on your sea chart.
- There is also another travelers ship sailing about. This is also the start of
the trading sidequest that leads Link into getting the swordsman’s scroll, which
contains the Great Spin Attack. Sail on over to the traveler’s ship to find
several octoroks, a blue chuchu, a yellow chuchu, and a huge zora warrior.
Defeat all the enemies on the ship and the door will open up allowing you to
leave.
- Walk towards it and the ship captain will come back down thanking you. He
introduces himself as the Man of Smiles. After speaking with him, tap on him
again and he will offer a reward for Link. Say you would like something
mysterious and he will reward Link with the Hero’s New Clothes. He says that the
clothes were worn by a hero of ancient times. Since he is in a generous mood, he
also gives link another treasure map!
New Item: Hero's New Clothes
Northeast Quadrant – Traveler's Ship
- The hero's clothes are the first item in the trading quest that leads to Link
acquiring the swordsman's scroll. The hero's clothes are later traded to a
traveler in the northwest quadrant for the telescope.
New Item: Treasure Map #26
Northeast Quadrant - Traveler's Ship
- This map shows the location of a sunken treasure in the
northeast quadrant of the Great Sea!
- Head back outside and pull out the cyclone slate. Draw the backwards N symbol to
get to the northwest quadrant. Remember the pretend hero on the northwest
quadrant traveler’s ship? Well sail on over to his ship and speak with him. He
is ecstatic about the clothes. He talks about how he can sense them and they are
collector’s items. Give them to him and he will give you a telescope in return.
Well, actually, it is a kaleidoscope.
New Item: Telescope
Northwest Quadrant – Travelers Ship
- The telescope is the second item in the trading quest that leads to Link
acquiring the swordsman's scroll. The telescope is later traded to a traveler in
the southeast quadrant for the guard notebook.
- Leave the ship and pull out the cyclone slate once again. Warp to either of the
two cyclone slates in the southeast quadrant. Remember one of the ho-ho tribe
members on the traveler’s ship was looking for something? Sail on over and board
the traveler’s ship.
- The ho-ho tribe member at the bottom-left is the only one who is missing his
telescope. Speak with him and he is very excited about the telescope. He sees
that his name is on it and is so happy that he bites his tongue. He thanks Link
for returning the telescope to him and in exchange, he gives link the guard
notebook.
New Item: Guard Notebook
Southeast Quadrant – Travelers Ship
- The guard notebook is the third item in the trading quest that leads to Link
acquiring the swordsman's scroll. The guard notebook is later traded to a
traveler in the southwest quadrant for a wood heart.
- Now that you are back out at the sea pull out the cyclone slate once again. This
time use it to warp to the west side of the southwest quadrant. The man at the
traveler ship in this area was missing his notebook remember. Sail on over and
show him the guard notebook that you just got. It has his name on it and he is
pleased to have it back. In exchange for the guard notebook, he will give you a
wood heart.
New Item: Wood Heart
Southwest Quadrant – Travelers Ship
- The wood heart is the fourth item in the trading quest that leads to Link
acquiring the swordsman's scroll. The wood heart is later given to the Old
Wayfarer. He promises a gift for Link back at his him at Bannan Island.
- Our next stop is at the Old Wayfarer’s hut at Bannan Island. Warp over to the
northwest quadrant and then sail to Bannan Island. Enter the Old Wayfarer’s hut
and you will see he is gone. Speak to his pretend mermaid friend Joanne and she
tells you he has went out wayfaring. Return to Lineback and warp to the
southeast quadrant.
- There are now two traveler’s ships sailing around. Sail over to the one that
roams the seas at the west part of the sea. Board the ship to find the Old
Wayfarer. Speak with him and he goes on and on about romance from the heart.
Just listen to his blabber and keep talking with him.
Eventually, Link will
offer the wood heart and he gladly accepts. He reluctantly thanks Link. Keep
speaking with him and then when you are trying to leave the boat, he will hint
that he has a special gift for Link, but not with him at the moment. It is back
at his hut in a large treasure chest.
- Leave the boat and warp back to the northwest quadrant. Sail on over to Bannan
Island but you will be stopped by a giant eye plant. This one is just like the
one we fought long ago around Molida Island. Set a course back and forth around
the eye plant and just keep aiming at its eye when it peaks out. After a few
shots it will disappear so sail on over to Bannan Island.
Walk on over to the Old Wayfarer’s hut and enter it. The Old Wayfarer has
returned and tells you that you have earned what is in the treasure chest. Head
on over and open it to get the swordsman’s scroll.
New Item: Swordman's Scroll
Bannan Island – Old Wayfarer’s Hut
- The swordsman’s scroll is the last item in the trading quest. The memories of a
veteran swordsmen flow through it. The scroll allows Link to perform the great
spin attack. To perform it, just do a spin attack three times in a row.
- Leave the hut and try out your brand new great spin attack. Pretty cool, isn’t
it. Anyway, head on over to Lineback and set sail once again.
- Use the cyclone slate and head back to the northeast quadrant. Board the
traveler’s ship once again and defeat all the enemies in the ship. The Man of
Smiles will come down and thank you once again. Just keep talking to him and he
eventually says that since you helped him, he will give you a present.
New Item: Prize Postcard
Northeast Quadrant - Traveler's Ship
- After getting the swordsman’s scroll, return to the traveler’s ship in the
northeast quadrant and defeat the enemies once again. The Man of Smiles will
come and thank you once again. Keep speaking with him and he will eventually
give you the Prize Postcard. Just put the prize postcard in any mailbox and then
Link will receive various treasures and ship parts periodically for the rest of
his journey.
- Leave the traveler’s ship to get back on the sailboat. There are two main
islands in the northeast quadrant.
There is the Isle of the Dead at the
top-right of the sea and Isle of Ruins, which is blocked off on the left side.
There is however, another uncharted island at the far north of the quadrant.
Sail on over and as you get close, Ciela will notice the island and mark it on
your map. Dock at the newly discovered Maze Island.
- There is a stone tablet and a statue. Tap the statue and it will give you
instructions on the island. Once you are ready pay the 20 rupees for beginner
mode and it will show you four stone statues within the maze. Be sure to mark
them on your map.
Maze - Beginner
- Enter the maze and immediately head right. Stay along the outside perimeter of
the maze and run right along the south end. You’ll eventually come to some
spikes that are blocking your way to the first statue. Look at the map and
you’ll see there is a long way around to get to the statue. Take the long route
and hit the first statue.
- Backtrack out of the route to the statue and you’ll see two sets of stairs that
lead to a higher platform. Take the one on the north end of the platform and aim
an arrow at the eye statue above. Hit it and it will create a small bridge and
lower the spikes. Jump off the platform and cross the lowered spike. Hit the
second stone statue found here.
- Stay along the right of the room and head up. Pass the first left and make a
turn at the second left turn. Walk up and down as you circle through this area
and you will come out at the third stone statue. Only one more statue left to
go.
- Take the left passage until it comes to a fork in the road. Head left, avoiding
the possible turns until you come to a point where you have to go up or down.
Head down and then climb up the small steps. Jump across the small gap and run
down the steps. Cross the bridge and the fourth and final statue is just to your
left. Hit it and a treasure chest will appear near the center of the room.
- Cross the bridge and head up the steps once again. Jump across the gap to the
right and then jump across another gap. Run to the right and jump to a third
higher platform. We are now on the same platform as the treasure chest. Run
upwards and open the chest to get a wisdom gem.
Wisdom Gem #17
Maze Island
- Solve the Maze Island puzzle on beginner and a treasure chest will appear on the
higher platform near the center of the island. There are four stone switches on
beginner mode. After the four are hit, quickly run through the maze towards the
chest and open it for the wisdom gem.
- Tap the statue once again and this time your difficulty level is on normal. It
costs 50 rupees to play this time and there are now 8 statues that you have to
hit. The four from the beginner level are still there but there are four new
ones. Mark them on your map and run into the maze.
Maze - Normal
- Start off by running straight to the right until you come to a set of stairs.
Climb up them and jump off the ledge to the right. Keep running to the right and
then down a bit. Climb another set of stairs and hit a switch, which lowers to
spikes just to the right. Jump off the platform to the right and run to your
first statue at the southeast part of the maze.
- After you hit the switch backtrack towards the lowered spikes and use the
boomerang just above. Toss it over the small gap and hit the switch to lower a
set of spikes. We’ll get to this statue soon, but for now just run to the east
and climb the steps just as before. Hit the eye switch with an arrow and the
spikes will lower. Run on over and hit the second statue.
- Run up north just like before but this time take the first left. Run through the
small maze until you come to the third statue. Hit it and then continue in the
same direction. Run to the south and cross the spikes that we lowered earlier
and hit the fourth statue.
- Run north along the left side to get to the area right by the prizes. Run east a
bit and then continue north to the top-most statue that we got before. Hit the
fifth statue and then head left once again.
Keep heading left until you have to
go north or south. This time head north until you come to two wooden pegs. Use
the grappling hook to create a tight rope and then slingshot your way up to the
higher platform. Run to the far left and jump off and hit the sixth statue.
- There is a switch in the area just below. Hit it and it will lower the spikes
above. Backtrack and run passed the spikes. Ignore the first turn and head south
at the second turn. Just keep heading downwards until you come to a small
bridge. Cross it and hit the seventh statue that is right on the other side.
- Cross the bridge again and climb the steps. Jump across to the platform on the
right and then to the next one. Run right along this higher platform and you
will see the eighth and final statue. Jump down and hit it and the large
treasure chest will appear on the prize platform. Climb the steps and jump
across to the right.
- Run on upward and open the chest before time expires. Your reward on normal is a
new treasure map.
New Item: Treasure Map #27
Maze Island
- This map shows the location of a sunken treasure in the
northeast quadrant of the Great Sea!
- Hit the statue once again and now your level is on expert. It now costs 100
rupees to play and there are 14 statues you now have to hit. 8 of them are the
same from normal difficulty while 6 of them are brand new.
Maze - Expert
- Start the maze just as you did before. Run to the right and climb the steps.
Jump off the platform to the right. Instead of running to the right, sidetrack
below a bit and you’ll find the first statue waiting for you. Hit it and then
backtrack and continue heading east. Head south a bit and climb the steps. Hit
the switch and jump off the ledge just like before. Use the boomerang across the
gap and hit the crystal switch just like before.
Then run and nail the
southeastern most statue. Now run to the far right of the maze just like before.
This time, climb the steps along the south and you’ll find the third statue.
Then jump off and climb the steps above and shoot the eye switch with an arrow.
Jump off and hit the fourth statue on the right.
- Now run up and take the first left. Navigate the same way you went before and
hit the fifth and sixth statues. Now rush up along the left side and pass the
prize platform again. Run to the right and head up just as if you were going to
the northern most statue once again.
This time however, head up on the right
side and you’ll come to a small gap. Use the grappling hook to get across to the
statue at the northeast corner. Hit the seventh statue and then run downwards.
Take the first path to the left and run the maze. At the end head up and hit the
eighth statue just as we did before.
- From here run to the left and then up again, making your way to the two wooden
pegs. Create a tightrope just as before and slingshot your way up. There is now
a statue right on this higher ledge so hit it. Then run to the left and jump off
the platform and hit the 10th statue.
- Hit the crystal switch below just like before and then run across the spikes.
Take the second path southward and you’ll find a statue right in your way. Hit
the 11th one and then continue south crossing the bridge. Hit the 12th statue
that is in the same area as before.
- Cross the bridge and climb the steps just as before. Jump across the two
platforms and drop down the lower floor. Hit the 13th statue that is waiting for
you. Then head north and west, circling back around to the steps. Jump across
the platform once again and run to the right. The 14th statue is in the lower
area right area so jump down and smack it. The treasure chest will appear so
climb the steps and jump on over to the treasure platform. Run on over and open
the chest before time expires to get a new heart container!
Heart Container #12
Maze Island
- Found in the third large treasure chest on Maze Island. Link must hit the 14
statues on expert mode to unlock this treasure.
- Back at the entrance to the maze, the stone statue says your name will be carved
into the stone tablet and it wants to give you a prize. Open up the chest to get
a big gold rupee worth 300 rupees. Hit the statue and walk back on over to the
entrance of the maze and the door will open.
- There are a few secrets left within the maze for Link to uncover. You may have
noticed a treasure chest on the right side of the island. Walk on over to the
area where there was a statue on the far right side of the island. Just to the
left of where the eye statue is, use a bomb against the wall at the top. It will
explode giving Link access to the chest above. Head up and open it to get a
wisdom gem.
Wisdom Gem #18
Maze Island
- There is a treasure chest on the far right side of the island. Use a bomb
against the wall just to the left of where the eye switch is. It will blow a
hole in the wall, allowing Link to reach the treasure chest. Open it to get the
gem.
- There are also two big green rupees waiting to be discovered. One is at the
southeast corner of the island. Just dig up some of the grass with the shovel to
find it. The other is near the northeast corner of the island, just to the west
of the small gap. Once again, use your shovel to dig up the big green rupee.
- That is all there is to explore at the island so head back on over to Linebeck
and set sail. Since we can’t yet reach the Isle of Ruins on the left side of
this quadrant because of the cyclone blocking its way, we should make our next
stop at the northeastern island, the Isle of the Dead.
Items: ????? Gems: ????? Gem #1 New Enemies: ?????
- Upon docking, Linebeck notices that the island is deserted but that it wasn’t
always this way.
He sends Link off as he polishes up his ship. The first thing
you should do is head right and drop the Prize Postcard into the mailbox if you
have it. Then enter the cave on the right.
- There is a book on the center table and four books against the wall on the
north. Read each of them to find some information on an esteemed explorer, McNey.
In the books it speaks of the pure metals and the Cobble Kingdom. After
gathering the information from the books head to the left side of the cave.
Before exiting, place a bomb along the north wall to reveal a secret passage.
- There is a ton of rupoor in this area, which is quite difficult to avoid. Use
the bow and arrow to defeat the flying keese and then slowly navigate your way
northward. Breaks the pots and then collect all the loose blue and red rupees.
There are four treasure chests in this area waiting for you. These include two
ship parts, a treasure map, and a courage gem.
New Item: Treasure Map #28
Isle of the Dead - Cavern
- This map shows the location of a sunken treasure in the
northeast quadrant of the Great Sea!
- In the cave right when you enter the Isle of the Dead. Place a bomb against the
north wall on the left side of the room. Blast through the hole and navigate
past a ton of black rupoor. At the end of the room, there are four treasure
chests. The one that is second from the right contains the courage gem.
- Head back down and use to the steps on the right to avoid having to cross the
black rupoor. Exit the cave along the left side of the room. There are two rupee
likes waiting for you. Use bombs like you did before to defeat these guys and
circle around the trees.
- You’ll notice there are piles of bones on the ground and some of them are
getting up! These piles form enemies known as stalfos, who are classic
adversaries of Link.
- Stalfos appear as a collection of bones on the ground. Once Link draws near, the
bones will form a skeleton enemy and begin to throw bones toward Link. Stalfos
are quite agile and will jump away if Link tries to strike them with his sword.
Use the jump attack with your blade. Alternatively, the grappling hook, bombs
and the boomerang work wonders against these bony foes.
- Travel your way across most of the island to the pyramid at the top right
corner. Climb the steps and enter it.
Read the two stone tablets. The one on the
left warns Link of Phantom corridors. If you run into one of these, you will
find the bones of McNey. To leave that area just head south. The second tablet
writes of a secret tree near the king’s chin. It then tells you that there is a
secret that is West 13 and north 7 from the king’s chin.
- Leave the pyramid and head to the southern part of the island. Remember what we
read in McNey’s journal. The island is shaped like a giant head facing to the
right. Thus, the chin of the island would be at the southeast corner. Walk over
to see there is a normal tree, the only one of its kind on the island. This must
be the tree the tablet spoke of. Count the tiles on the ground and go west 13
and north 7.
Pull out your shovel and dig up the spot and a hole in the ground
is revealed, so fall down under.
- You’ll notice a cracked wall above. Use a bomb to explode open a hole. Walk
through to find a ton of rupees, pots, a treasure chest and a stone tablet. Read
the stone tablet and it tells you to aim west from the king’s eye and shoot an
arrow. Keep that in mind and then open the treasure chest for a power gem.
Power Gem #18
Isle of the Dead
- From the tree at the bottom-right of the island, walk left 13 spaces and up 7
spaces. Use the shovel and dig up a hole in the ground. Fall down and bomb the
wall above. Open the treasure that is found in this room to get the gem.
- Leave the room below and then begin navigating to the left. Maneuver around a
ton of boulders that are rolling in your way and head around the cavern. Defeat
the keese that are in your way and you’ll eventually come to a staircase. Climb
up the steps and exit the cave. You are now outside but on a higher platform.
Walk to the right and you’ll see a treasure chest. Open it to get a treasure
map.
New Item: Treasure Map #29
Isle of the Dead
- This map shows the location of a sunken treasure in the
northeast quadrant of the Great Sea!
- Remember the tablet said to aim west from the King’s eye. If you look at the
map, the small horizontal area between the chest and staircase is the eye on the
map. Stand even with it and walk all the way to the left. Use the arrows and
shoot a switch that is on the left on a raise platform. Hitting it will open the
door that leads to the graveyard at the northwest part of the island.
- Jump off the ledge to the north and head on over to the graveyard. If you read
the stone tablet just outside the graveyard it says that the six sages who know
the way of the temple rest here. There are nine graves here, each with some sort
of inscription. Three of them are unreadable, while the other six each have
numbers and a direction. If you look at all six of the graves, the path within
the temple will be known. The six graves read as follows...
"I am the first sage. Go north through the first room."
"I am the second sage. Go east through the second room."
"I am the third sage. Go east through the third room."
"I am the fourth sage. Go north through the fourth room."
"I am the fifth sage. Go north through the fifth room."
"I am the sixth sage. The sixth room is where Brant was laid to rest."
- Now that we know the secret route through the Phantom Corridor head back to the
northeast part of the island and enter the pyramid. Walk through in the same
order as stated above. Walk north, east, east, north, and north again.
- You’ll come to a new room and meet the ghost of the fourth knight, Brant. He
states that this is where the dead of the Cobble Kingdom lay to rest. Answer him
by clicking well… and he then sees why you are looking for the Aquanine. He
states the King Mutoh has the Aquanine that Link is looking for. He then tells
you to venture forth through the door and opens it up.
- Once you are outside, head straight up and you’ll find a large treasure chest.
Open it up to get a Regal Necklace.
New Item: Regal Necklace
Isle of the Dead
- The Regal Necklace will put the cyclones on the great sea to rest, which will
allow Link to access the Isle of Ruins.
- Brant appears and says that King Mutoh who is holding the Aquanine is not here.
He explains that Mutoh is on the island that is guarded by a rock wall, the Isle
of Ruins. He explains that with the Regal Necklace, Link will calm the cyclone
allowing him to sail to the island.
- That’s all that is left to do on this island, so jump off the platform below and
run on over to Linebeck. Set sail and there are just a few things we want to
take care of before docking at the Isle of Ruins. There are five sunken
treasures in the northeast quadrant that we have yet to uncover.
