- Once you initially start the game, it will show a cool recap of
what exactly happened in the Wind Waker using some cute slideshow
artwork. Once that’s over with the intro video kicks in showing our hero
Link at sea with Princess Zelda… I mean Tetra. In what appears to be a
jolly old day on the sea turns ugly quite quickly. The skies begin to
darken and the gloomy Ghost Ship appears.
- Tetra being the curious pirate
she is jumps aboard only to be screaming for help seconds later. Our
great hero tries jumping on board, but doesn’t quite make the jump.
Unable to hang on to the ship, he falls into the water.
~ Mercay Island - West Side ~
- Next we see of Link, he has washed ashore at an island and a fairy that
makes the same noises as Navi from Ocarina of Time awakens Link. Her
name is Ciela. Link tells Ciela of the Ghost Ship and she says that
Grandpa will know more about it. After a short scene where it shows her
grandpas house, you will take control of Link. Use the stylus to tap
your way towards the house and enter it.
- The old man here is Ciela’s grandpa, Oshus. After finding out what has
happened to Tetra, Oshus encourages Link not to pursue her because of
the dangers of the Ghost Ship. After Link’s persistence, Oshus refers
Link to a sailor on the other side of the island, Linebeck.
- After the
old man is done talking, head outside and down the steps. Make your way
to the right and you will feel the shake of an earthquake. Continue
right and you will discover that the bridge has collapsed. After talking
to the lady next to the bridge, she will tell you of another route at
the north side of the Island.
- Using the map, you can follow the path to the North but you will come
across some enemies and Ciela will tell you to head back. If you talk to
Oshus once again, he will tell you simply to wait for the bridge to be
repaired, but we have no time for that. Exit Oshus’s house and head
right. You will find a cave that is guarded by barrels. Lift the barrels
to reveal the entrance and head inside.
~ Mercay Island - Oshus's Storehouse ~
- This is Oshus’s storehouse. Head over to the door that is closed and
Ciela says that she forgot the secret on how to open it. However, she
does remember that the password was the same number of palm trees that
are found on the beach. Rather than counting yourself, I’ll just tell
you that there are seven of them on the beach. Tap the sign and scribble
the number seven on there to open up the door. Straight ahead lies a
chest. Open it to get Oshus’s sword.
New Item: Oshus's Sword
Mercay Island - Oshus's Storehouse
- This blade was Oshus's weapon of choice as a young lad, but he no longer
needs it. Link can use the sword to slash objects, cut down grass, small trees
and defeat most enemies.
~ Mercay Island - West Side ~
- After you leave the cave Oshus will confront you. He will take you back
to his house and teach you how to handle the sword. Link will learn
three basic attacks from Oshus. The targeted sword attack, the side
slash, and the great spin attack. After mastering the three attacks Link
is ready to head up the path at the north and fight off those enemies.
- Before heading up the path to the north, head west and talk to the
farmer with cucco’s outside of his house. He will say that because of
the earthquake rocks have filled his garden. Do him a favor and toss the
rocks to clear the garden. As a reward for your help, he will give you 1
rupee. Wait what, just one rupee?
- After calling him a cheapskate he will
give you a very worthy hint. He points to your map and circles a small
area on the north side of the island. There is a tree there and he tells
you to bash it really hard.
- Now is a good time to learn how to mark your
map. Just click menu in the bottom-left corner or simply just press down
on the d-pad. This will flip the bottom and top screens allowing you to
draw on the map. Circle the area where the farmer showed you there was a
tree. We will get to that later.
Red ChuChu
Threat
Attacks
Contact
- One of the most basic and easiest enemies in the entire game.
The Red ChuChu's are extremely slow and have no real attack
other than simply walking into Link. They are so easy to avoid
and just one strike with the sword will take care of these guys.
- Now we are ready to head north. Do so and you will encounter your first
enemies in the game, Red Chuchu’s. One simple sword strike will do the
trick against these easy enemies. It is a good idea to chop down any
small trees and bushes here to gather some more rupees.
- Continue along the path and you will come to a statue. Tap at it with the
stylus and it will give you some advice. It will teach you the summersault
attack and tell you to do it on the tree just next to it. The summersault
attack isn’t really an exact science and at times it might take several
attempts to get it. Scribble tiny circles along the perimeter of the
screen and Link will do a summersault in that direction. Roll into the
tree here and a Red Rupee will fall out. The Red Rupees are worth
20. Get to the end of the trail to find a cave, enter it.
- The mountain passage here will offer some of the basic puzzles that Link
will face throughout his entire quest. Once inside head straight along
the path and you will come to a locked door. For now just head right by
it and some Red Chuchu’s will appear. Defeat them and head up the stairs
here to find a chest. Open it to get your first small key.
Backtrack to
the locked door and tap on it to use the key.
- Straight ahead is another locked door with two levers on each side of
the door. In obvious Zelda fashion, the next small key is obtained by
pulling the levers in the correct order. Striking the statue to the
right will tell you the same thing. If you do just guess and pull the
levels in the wrong order several ropes will fall from the ceiling.
Rope
Threat
Attacks
Contact
- These snake creatures are rather weak. They moves around
slowly until they notices you, then dash at you quickly. A quick
slash of the sword solves the problem.
- Head to the west part of the screen and you will see a block that you
can push as well another statue. Tap the statue and it gives you
introductory lessons on how to push a block. Push the block to the left
and you will find another statue and two Keese.
Keese
Threat
Attacks
Contact
- These bat like creatures move quite quickly and fly in random
patterns. Their only attack is simply flying into Link. One
swipe with your sword will do the trick. If there is more than
one Keese in an area, the Spin Attack works quite well.
- After killing the enemies, tap the statue
here and it will give you a hint on the correct order of the lever
puzzles. It tells you the second from the left is the first to pull.
Bring out your map and jot this secret down.
- Now backtrack to the center room with the levers and this time head
right pushing another block. Here you will find four more Keese that can
be easily defeated. At the top there is another statue along with a
treasure chest. Tap the statue and it will tell you that the lever 1st
on the left needs to be pulled second. In addition, the statue states
the second from the right is last. Jot these numbers down and by process
of elimination we can see that the level are numbered from left to right
as 2,1,4,3.
- Open the chest next to the statue here and Link will get a red rupee.
Head back to the main room here and pulled the levers in the correct
order. In case you didn't jet them down it is the second from the left,
then the far left, then the far right, and lastly the second from the
right. A small key will drop for Link. Grab it, open the locked door,
and head up the stairs.
- Looking at the map will show a key that is moving around. That is
because a pesky rat is holding the key and running around.
Rat
Threat
Attacks
Contact
- Another very simple enemy. They usually are found roaming
caves. They don't really attack Link, but just move in random
patterns. The only way to get hurt is if you walk into one. One
sword swipe will defeat this pathetic enemy.
- Our goal here is to kill the rat with the key, however, it will avoid Link at all costs
and just run circles from hole to hole. You will notice that there is a
block on the far left of this room. After defeating all the other rats
here, pull the block and then push it so it blocks the entrance to the
hole on the left side. Now the rat can't do a full circle.
- Make your way
back to the right side of the screen near the locked door. Once you see
the key on the map come out of the hole on the right and make its way to
the left then you can make your move. The rat will not be able to head
through the hole on the left because of the block so now is your chance
to strike at it with your sword. Do so and grab the key that the
annoying rat leaves behind. Unlock the door and make your way passed
some more Keese to get to the cave's exit.
Items: Wooden Shield, Red Potion, Purple Potion Gems: Power Gem #1 New Enemies: Crow
~ Mercay Island - Mercay Village ~
- Upon exiting the cave, Ciela will talk to you about going to see
Linebeck. Before doing so you may want to take a tour around the Mercay
Village. The lade in the purple will tell you things are kind of slow
because of rumors of the ghost ship. Link can also talk to the worker
that is on the east side of the broken bridge. For now just head to the
southeast portion of Mercary Village where Linebeck is said to be.
Unfortunately, Linebeck isn't here, but the person that is by the dock
advises us to check out Milk Bar.
- Now is a good time to explore the rest of the village. The building
closest to the dock is currently closed. Head to the left and you will
find a postbox. While it isn't important right now, it will come in
handy at later points in the game. Keep in mind that each major island
has its own postbox as well. Head to the left and you will find a small
hut. This is the Mercay Island Shop. You definitely should purchase the
Wooden Shield for 80 rupees for now.
New Item: Wooden Shield
Mercay Island - Shop
- This is your basic shield in the game. Unlike most other Zelda titles,
it is the only shield that Link will find on his quest. It will deflect most frontal
attacks.
- If you have the rupees, a potion is
also something that you should buy. The wooden shield is the only shield
found in the game. It will protect Link from frontal attacks from his
enemies as well as deflect certain objects back towards enemies. Unlike
previous Zelda titles, Link does not need a bottle to carry potion. When
drinking red potion, Link restores 6 heart containers. After your
purchase the wooden shield, the purple potion becomes available. Far
superior to the red potion, it restores 8 rather than 6 heart
containers. Although the main reason it is superior is because if Link
dies while holding purple potion, he will automatically use the purple
potion and his life will be restored, much like a fairy in previous
Zelda titles.
New Item: Red Potion
Mercay Island - Shop
- Restores six hearts when used, although fairly weak and not as good as
the Purple Potion, it is cost effective for the time being.
New Item: Purple Potion
Mercay Island - Shop
- Restores eight Hearts and revives you if you die automatically! For the
extra 100 rupees, it's well worth it!
- There are a few more goodies for sale at this time as well. The most useful of them all
is the Power Gem. There are actually 20 power gems as well as 20 wisdom
and courage gems throughout the game. While this gem has no particular
use at the moment. Link will soon find three fairies, the Spirits of Power,
Wisdom, and Courage. Gathering 10 of a particular Gem will increase the
Spirit's strength. They will come in handy in later portions of the game.
Unfortunately, this first Power Gem is rather expensive at this stage of
the game. You can always come back at a later time for it.
Power Gem #1
Mercay Island - Shop
- These mystical gems can be collected and used to upgrade the Spirit of Power later in the game! View a complete
listing of each gem using the Power Gems Guide..
- Also available is a treasure piece. These items are merely trade items
that can be bartered for a higher price later down the road. While
it's not necessary to get right now, it will save you money in the
long run to get it right now. The last
items available are some bombs, but they cannot be purchased at the
moment because you don't have a bomb bag. Nothing else here, so you
can exit the shop.
- Just north and east of the shop Link will find a cucco wandering around.
Slowly walk up to the cucco and pick it up. Don't run or else the cucco
will run as well. Walk to the west of the shop and you will see a small
area of land over the water to the left. While holding the cucco, it
will allow Link to fly for a short period of time. Glide over to the
piece of land on the left. Head up the stairs and open the chest to get
a treasure. This treasure will vary from game to game. Its only use is
to be sold to a collector for rupees. Jump off the cliff on the right
and enter the first building you see, the Milk Bar.
- Tap on the bartender to talk to him. After a short talk with him, he
will tell you that Linebeck has headed for the Temple of the Ocean King.
Another man jumps into the conversation saying that the Ocean King is
the defender of all creation. He gives a threatening speech of how you
should not enter the temple. After all that talking, the bartender will
mark the Temple of the Ocean King on Link's map. You can jot it down on
the map, but I think it's obvious which building it is.
- Exit the bar and it's now time to make our way north. The building we
haven't looked at yet at the far top-right of the village is the
Treasure Teller shop, but it is not open yet. Remember this place
because it is where Link can trade in the treasures that he finds on his
quest. Continue to the screen above.
- Navigating this area will find several Red Chuchu's. There is a new enemy
found here as well, a crow.
Crow
Threat
Attacks
Contact
- These annoying enemies are found perched atop trees. They will
swoop down and attempt to ram into you, knocking some Rupees
everywhere. Kill them quickly with your sword before you lose
too much money!
- Remember earlier that farmer with the cucco's shows a tree on your map?
If you marked it on your map head towards it and use the rolling
summersault maneuver to bash the tree.
This will release a large green
rupee that is worth 100 rupees! Awesome!
- Anyway, continue heading left
to the next screen. Make your way around this enemyless area to get to
the Temple of the Ocean King. Ciela will once again remind you have the
dangers but is persistent about helping Link find Tetra. Enter the
Temple.
- The Phantom Hourglass is located in this entrance chamber, but at the
moment it cannot be obtained. Link will notice bones all over this area.
These are men that have become victims of the temple. You can chat with
their souls, but once you are done with that, head north through the
passage.
- Head straight up and look! It's none other than Linebeck, who appears to
be doing jumping jacks as he is pleading for Link's help.
He is trapped
in an enclosed area of spikes and apparently has sprained his ankle. He
will go on to say that the purple areas are safe, while any other area
of the temple will suck the health out of you.
- Head right to the purple
area. You can break pots if you need to restore health. From here you
can head up to the next purple area which has a treasure chest. Open it
to get... wait? It's empty! Shucks. Anyway, head to the far left to the
next purple area and you will find a switch. Strike at it and it will
lower the spikes that surround Linebeck. Linebeck will immediately bolt
to the door at the bottom. Follow after him.
- After insulting your name, praising his bravery, and accusing you of
getting the treasure from the Ghost Ship, Linebeck will tell you to
search for a clue about the Ghost Ship. He gives Link a small key that
he found in the temple. Once you gain control of Link again, quickly run
to the purple area that had the switch which freed Linebeck. There is a
locked door here. Use the key that Linebeck gave you to open it.
- Next, quickly dash towards the purple area at the northwest part of the map. There is
another switch here. Strike it and then quickly bolt to the right. Follow the
path making your way to the top-right purple area on the screen. Make sure to
move quickly as the switch you hit will eventually reset. Strike the switch at
top-right area before the other switch resets and the door at the top-center of
the room will open. Quickly run to the area to find a large treasure chest. Open
it up to get Sea Chart #1!.
New Item: Sea Chart #1
Temple of the Ocean King, Part 1
- This map reveals the southwest quadrant of the Great Sea, allowing you
to travel there! Spiftacular!
- There is nothing left for you in this area anymore so head back to where
Linebeck was. Make sure to watch your health as you head back. Break and
pots to gain some hearts. Once you reach the bottom of the room,
Linebeck is gone! Continue backtracking and exit the Temple of the Ocean
King.
- Linebeck is waiting for you just outside. After showing him the
Sea Chart, he grabs it and runs back towards his ship at the dock,
taking the map with him. Follow him back to his ship.
- Upon arriving at his ship, you will see both Linebeck and Oshus. After
Oshus praises Link and insults Linebeck, they discuss the findings of
the Sea Chart. Apparently there is a secret within this Sea Chat which
Oshus describes as flakey. Use the stylus to scratch off the island at
the bottom-right of the screen to reveal a strange symbol.
- Oshus will point out that this is the Isle of Ember and a fortune teller named
Astrid lives there. Oshus advices Link to speak with Astrid to find out
more information about the Ghost Ship. After some more chit-chatting,
Link, Ciela, and Linebeck are off to the Isle of Ember.
- Link will gain control of the ship and it is quite interesting how he
controls it. Simply use the stylus on the map on the bottom screen to
trace the route of the ship. One thing you will notice right away, is that
Linebeck's ship has its own health bar, which can be seen by the four
green hearts in the corner of the screen.
- There are a few places that Link
can sail to at the moment. Just south and west of Mercay Island is Cannon
Island. If you do head over there, you will find there isn't much to do just yet.
You will meet up with the Postman, but he has nothing to deliver to you
just yet. There is one building that Link can enter, Eddo's Garage. Eddo
is working on a Cannon, but isn't there at the moment and Eddo's assistant
is there to inform Link.
- Another place of interest on the map is Beedle's
Shop Ship. It moves around the water, so just trace a line towards the
ship to follow after it. A few items of interest are found at Beedle's
Shop. Link can purchase his first Wisdom Gem here. Much like the
Power Gem, it's rather expensive and has no use at the moment. You
can skip it for now and just come back at a later point to get it.
Wisdom Gem #1
Beedle's Shop Ship - Southwest Quadrant
- These mystical gems can be collected and used to upgrade the Spirit of Wisdom later in the game! View a complete
listing of each gem using the Wisdom Gems Guide.
- There is another treasure as well as some Red Potion for sale. I
suggest getting the treasure if you have the rupees. What you
definitely should purchase is the Ship part. You will find these
throughout the game and it is best to always purchase them if you
can. It sells for 150 rupees and is something you should definitely buy.
- Once you are done
shopping, exit and just trace a line that takes Link to the anchor symbol
at the Isle of Ember. Not much else to do for now, so we are ready to go.
Sea Trap
Threat
Attacks
Contact
- These things are simply two sea urchins holding some wire-like
material in between them. Easily avoidable, but painful if you
don't react fast enough.
- These Sea Traps are the only true enemy in this part of the sea. To avoid running
into them, simply hop over them by pressing the jump button. Continue
sailing until you have finally reached the shore of the Island of Ember.
