| Chapter 3 - The Mighty Collection |
|
This section of the walkthrough covers gathering the songs we will need for the
next area as well as lots of side quests.
|
|
|
|
| 3.1 Sun's Song |
|
|
- Zelda's nursemaid has set us in the direction of Death Mountain.
Although the game isn't very straightforward, there's actually a few
places we should go first. For now, go ahead and go to Kakariko
Village by following the path towards the mountain, up the stairs
and into the village.
- This place is full of things we can do and it's also our next objective,
but these next few quests we have to accomplish are dependant on
whether its day or night. Because time stays still in some areas and
moves quickly in others, our first objective is to master control of
that.
- For now, head straight on through here to the opposite side of the
village which leads to the Graveyard.
- This place is rainy and mysterious during the day, with a kid walking
around slowly with a stick attempting to imitate Dampe, the grave
keeper. At night, ghosts called Poes will appear. Their easily
defeated, but its easier to simply avoid them.
|
Poe |
Threat
Attacks
Contact
Lantern ram |
|
- These particular enemies are found only in graveyards
and will repeatedly become invisible (and invulnerable). They attack
by flying towards you and hitting you with the lantern they carry.
- To defeat them, you must resist the urge to use Z Targeting (because
they won't become visible). Get close to taunt them, use your shield to
defend, then wait for a gap in their attacks and slash away. |
|
- Head to the opposite side of the graveyard and you'll find three large
graves. Read the ones on either the left or right to make the two
deceased Composer Brothers appear. They fight like normal Poes, but
will give you useful information when defeated.
Kill them if you
feel like learning something, then stand on the Triforce symbol on
the ground. Whenever you see these, play Zelda's Lullaby.
- Doing so here will cause lightning to strike the large grave in front of
you, causing it to explode and reveal a hole. Fall into it.
- This place is littered with skeletons. You'd think the royal family
would have wonderful burials for these wealthy royalty. Anyway, head
down the ramp and you'll find a new enemy that look much like bats.
|
Keese |
Threat
Attacks
Contact |
|
- These simple bats are in most of the dungeons in the
game. They often hang on the walls or ceilings and begin
moving when you come close.
- If there is a torch nearby, they will fly into it to become either Fire
or Ice Keese, making them much more deadly. Projectile weapons
are effective against them, but so is your sword and shield.
Just be ready to Z Target them when they get close. |
|
- There are four Keese in this room. One at the entrance, one on the wall
on your right, and two on the steps. Use your Slingshot to
annihilate them, then climb the steps to reach the now opened door.
- In the next room, you'll find another new enemy. These ones will freeze
you in your steps for a few seconds if they catch you in their gaze.
|
ReDead |
Threat
Attacks
 Life drain
Chilling stare |
|
- These zombie-like creatures move around slowly and take
several hits to defeat and can be very difficult in groups.
- Their main attack is to hop onto your shoulders and begin "chewing" on
you. Mash A repeatedly to get them off. They'll always get at
least a heart and a half of damage off before you can retaliate.
Quickly run away to gain some ground.
- They also have the ability to stop you in your tracks for a few moments
if you fall within their eyesight. This means the best way to
attack them is from behind.
- In order to make these enemies easier, stunning abilities are effective.
Deku Nuts and the Sun's Song are particularly useful. |
|
- Try to walk behind their line of sight and make you way to
the other side of the room. Go through the passage and check out the
stone. Navi will read a poem as well as notice the song inscribed
for you to learn.
|

- Play this to move time quickly, turning day to night and vice versa. It
also has the ability to stun ReDeads and Gibdos. Use it whenever you
see them. |
|
 |
|
- Go back through the previous rooms, using the song to stun the ReDeads,
and return to the surface using the glowing pad.
| Heart Piece #13 |
Graveyard (Past) |
|
|
- In the last row of graves right before the Triforce Crest, pull back the
fourth grave from the left (when facing the entrance). If you're a child, you'll
have to do it at night so the kid doesn't stop you. Fall in the hole.
- Kill the ReDead inside, then play the Sun's Song on the little steps of the
platform to make a chest appear. |
|
|
- One of our next objectives is to get a Hylian Shield before we
scale Death Mountain. It can be purchased in the Market, but there's
one for free nearby. In the first row of graves (from where you
enter), there is a grave with three plants in front of it. Make sure
it's night and pull back the grave to reveal a hole. Fall in.
- Inside, run straight forward and open the chest for a free shield!
|
|
|
- This giant shield is quite durable, but it's too large to use
effectively with your small body. For now, it's main use is to use as an
alternative shield on Death Mountain, which would otherwise burn your wooden one. |
|
 |
|
- Sweet. Go back through the entrance to get back to the village.
|
|
| 3.2 Epona's Song |
|
|
- While there's several things we can do here, let's leave the village.
It's nice to have the Sun's Song for the next couple parts just so
you don't have to wait in the fields until morning.
- Our next objective is entirely optional, but there's some cool goodies
to get there. If you're up for it now, head to Lon Lon Ranch in the
center of Hyrule Field. Just your mini-map, you can't miss it.
- As soon as you arrive, enter the door on your left to meet up again with
Talon, the fat farmer we met at Hyrule Castle awhile back.
- He has a
little game prepared for you, involving chickens no less. You'll have to
bring some Rupees though, as it may take a few tries to get the hang of
it.
|
Required:
|
Cost:
|
Prize:
- Milk.
- Bottle #1 (first time only). |
|
|
- As soon as you agree to play, Talon scare off the three chickens which
land in the corners of the room. To make things easier, throw them all
in a safe direction to help narrow down the options. Keep in mind that
they move as you play, but try to search each of the three corners in
general.
- To make the game immensely easier, you can toss all of the stray Cuccos
into the area at the base of the steps before you speak with Talon. It's
practically cheating, but Talon won't notice because he's so sleepy I
suppose...
|
|
|
Summery:
- Catch the three chickens Talon throws.
- They land in the three corners of the room.
|
|
|
|
|
- These bottles are used to carry many useful things throughout your
journey. This particular one comes filled with Milk which restores five hearts
and can be used twice before it's gone! |
|
 |
|
- After gifting you with a brand new bottle, the big guy will insinuate
the possibility of you wedding his daughter.
After listening to his
chuckling rambles, leave and head for the center of the corral, where
you will find Malon.
- Speak with her multiple times until she starts asking about the "song
her mother wrote". Pull out your Ocarina while standing in front of her
and she'll teach you Epona's Song.
|

- Use this song to call Epona, the spirited horse who is faster than
any other. You can't do much with it now, but it will be a great
help later on. |
|
 |
|
- Well that's simply splendid! The potential free milk is a pretty sweet
deal for a little while, until you get more hearts anyway. For now, all
it's good for is making Epona follow you within the corral.
If you're
really bored and persistent, you can play the song repeatedly to get her
near the exit, then stuck on the outside of the corral.
- Head to the opposite side of the ranch where the feeding trough is
located (the big tower in the corner) and go through the door. Inside,
you'll find two cows and several milk crates.
| Heart Piece #5 |
Lon Lon Ranch (Past) |
|
|
- In Lon Lon Ranch, head to the big tower at the far end of the ranch
(opposite the entrance). Inside, push and pull the milk crates to get to
the far corner, where you will find a hole. Use A to crawl through and
you'll find a Piece of a Heart sitting in a nest.

|
|
- With that being settled, exit. If you'd like some Skulltula Tokens, play
the Sun's Song. With it now night, you'll probably encounter your first
Guays, which are crows.

- These obnoxious enemies are very similar to Keese in that they fly
around and will pursue you if you come into their sight. They're only
found outdoors and die with one hit from just about anything. |

| |
- That's all we can do here for now, so pack up and head back to Hyrule
Field.
|
|
| 3.3 Saria's Song |
|
|
- Our goal right now is to head back to Kokiri Forest. After exiting Lon
Lon Ranch, it will be to your right. Go around the ruined wall and
you'll see it in the distance.
- At this point, you'll probably encounter a PeaHat. You are never
required to fight these annoying enemies,
so I suggest you avoid them all together.
|

Threat
Attacks
Contact
PeaHat Larva |
|
- These obnoxious enemies fly around attempting to chop you in
half with their spinning propeller blades. They're vulnerable to
projectile attacks as well as the soft "root" area underneath,
which you can circle around and attack with your sword.
- Sometimes they will fly up high in the air and make PeaHat Larva, which
are miniature versions of itself that are invulnerable, but die
quickly. They will also spit these things out if you attack them
while they're still in the ground. The best plan is
to avoid these large enemies altogether, it's just not worth the
trouble. |
|
- And you thought you were done here, ha! Now that we have the Sun's Song,
there's actually a Skulltula we can get here.
| Skulltula #45 |
Kokiri Village (Past) |
|
|
- Use the Sun's Song to make it night if it isn't already. This spider is
hiding behind the Know-It-All-Brothers' House (the one to the southwest,
with all the fences nearby). Get back there and jump attack (Z + A) to
kill and grab the token.

| |
- Next, (from the entrance,) make your way left, climbing up
the small cliff then up the vines. Circle around to the highest
point and and enter the mysterious log.
- This area is a maze which will kick you out if you make a wrong turn.
There's a couple goodies we can get along the way, so let's get those
real quick.
- Simply take the right log to entire a large area. Straight
ahead, you'll see a tree with a target hanging off of a branch. Shooting
it with your Slingshot will make points appear at the top of the tree.
Shoot the middle three times (100 points each) to make a Deku Scrub
appear and gift you with something special.
|
|
|
- This bag allows you to carry up to 40 seeds for your Slingshot. |
|
 |
|
- Next, go immediately to the right and stand on the little stump.
Here you can play a little game with the Skull Kids on your Ocarina.
| Heart Piece #1 |
Lost Woods (Past) |
|
|
- After entering the Lost Woods, go right one screen, then drop down and
stand on the stump to make the Skull Kids appear. Play their game and
follow along with your Ocarina. Just try to play along to the beat.
After three successful songs in a row, they will give you a Piece of a
Heart. |
|
|
- With those two goodies out of the way, we'll continue our merry way
through the Lost Woods. This first time through is easy, because all you
have to do is follow the music. Crank up the sound and stand close to
each exit until you find the right one.
- After going only two screens, Kaepora Gaebora (the owl) will hint at
what I just told you. Ignore the fool bird and continue on my friend!
- From the start, the correct path is: Right, left, right, left,
forward, left, right.
- As soon as you enter, you will find yourself in a small clearing with
barred gates blocking the way. As soon as you take a step forward, a
Wolfos will appear.
|
Wolfos |
Threat
Attacks
Swipe |
|
- These wolf like enemies will circle around you, then come in and quickly
swipe at you with the long claws on their forepaws. Use Z targeting
techniques to get close and avoid their attacks, then slash them when
their guard is down.
- You can kill them quickly by using a Jump Attack (Z + A) when they're
back is to you. |
|
- After you've defeated the Wolfos, the bars will be lowered, allowing you
to proceed. Enter the zigzag of a maze and go right. You'll encounter
your first Mad Scrub.
|
Mad Scrub |
Threat
Attacks
Deku Nut |
|
- Very similar to the Deku Scrubs, these enemies shoot three Deku Nuts at
a time. Reflect them back at them like you did the other. |
|
- A simple strategy is to lock onto them with Z as you run towards them
and immediately hold down R to defend. Either use their Deku Nuts to
reflect back at them, or shoot them with your slingshot from afar. As
they get hit with either, you can continue running towards them and
slash them quickly with your sword to finish them off.
- Just follow your mini-map until you get to either of the small pools of
water, then climb up and make way for the gigantic archway. Up there you
will find two more Mad Scrubs. Use the same methods to defeat them, then
head onward to find that Saria is the one who's been playing the song
all this time.
- After speaking with her shortly, she'll tell you all about her
"feelings", then teach you her spiffy song.
|

- This spirited song allows you to speak with Saria back in Kokiri
Forest or Navi for advice. It seems, however, that many people
throughout Hyrule are inspired by its uplifting tune... |
|
 |
|
- On your way back, you can take a shortcut to avoid all of the Mad
Scrubs. Simply climb the ladder at the bottom of the temple-like ramp to
get on top of all of these grassy walls. From here, you can simply jump
along the tops of these walls until you get back to the beginning and
right on out.
- As long as you're up here though, make note of the ladder in the middle
here that leads down to a hole. Inside is a fairy fountain, one of many
in Hyrule. This is perhaps the easiest to get to throughout the game, so
it's a good place to stock up on Fairies later on.
- That annoying owl (Kaepora Gaebora) will appear once again. Although he
makes me yawn, he does have some good advice. If you ever get stuck, try
whipping out your Ocarina at certain locations to see if a musical staff
appears. If it does, it means you're supposed to play a song. After our
feathered companion of sorts flies off, go ahead and get lost to return
to Kokiri.
- If you'd like some extra goodies, enter the Lost Woods again and take a
left. You'll see another Skull Kid playing a flute.
| Heart Piece #2 |
Lost Woods (Past) |
|
|
Requires: Saria's Song
- Enter the Lost Wods and take the first left. Stand on the stump, pull
out your Ocarina and play Saria's Song to receive a Piece of a Heart.

|
|
- After that, go left yet again. In this small area, you'll find yourself
under the bridge leading to Kokiri.
- Make your way to the other side and
you'll find a Business Scrub. Beat him up to be eligible to purchase the Deku Stick Upgrade, which allows you to hold more sticks at a time.
Somewhat worthless, but it's makes you feel all warm and squishy inside!

Threat
Attacks
Deku Nut |
|
- Another variation of the Deku Scrub, these weak editions will be taken
down in a single hit, even their own reflected Deku Nuts.
- After being vanquished, they will sell various things as a reward for
defeating them. |
|
|
|
|
- This upgrade allows you to carry up to 20 Deku Sticks at once! |
|
 |
|
- That's all there is here, so go ahead and make your way back to Hyrule
Field.
|
|
| 3.4 Cucco Roundup |
|
|

Link with KFC |
- At long last, we're returning to Kakariko Village. I know, it's a pain
to get the Sun's Song and come back, but this way we could use the Song
as we did our errands. I like to think it saves time instead of hanging
out with the Stalchildren in Hyrule Field until night comes in order to
get the tokens.
- There's a lady near the entrance to the graveyard standing in front of a small fenced area who
waves her arms about pointlessly. She's known as "The Cucco Lady" and
she's willing to give you a reward for putting the chickens back in the
pen. Lazy woman...
- They're scattered across the village and some of them are nearly
impossible to get to unless you practically cheat. Why Nintendo insisted
on this, I have no idea...
- Also, for this quest, try not to harm them too much with any of your
weapons, otherwise they'll pronounce a war cry of a cockle-doodle-doo
and reign doom down upon you until you leave the area or die.
|
Cucco |
Threat
Attacks
Contact |
|
- Hell hath no fury like a gaggle of chickens... Beat one of these
feathered buzzards up enough and it'll call a few friends, which will
chase you down and kill you. Nobody messes with chickens.
NOBODY! |
|
#1 The first Cucco is between the Cucco Lady and the entrance to the
Graveyard. Simple.
|
|
#2 The second is on the ledge next to the Skulltula House in the center of
the village. Either use another chicken and jump off the higher ledge of
the unfinished building to float over to it, shoot it with your
Slingshot, or use a Deku Nut. If you do either of the latter, chase it
down and grab it.
|
|
#3 At the entrance to the village.
|
|
#4 There is a crate near the stairs leading up towards the upper area
of Kakariko Village. Roll into it to reveal a Cucco spy, the fiend!
|
|
#5 Right in front of the guard at the entrance to Death Mountain, there is
a Cucco chillin' near the ramp.
|
|
- Next up, we have to get to the "secret area". I call it so because it's
impossible to get to unless you're very innovative or cheat. There are
two methods (other than cheating) to get across the fence in the
northeastern part of the village:
Trick 1 - Grab another Cucco, get up on the platform near the windmill
and jump off the ledge at an angle so you land on the skinny looking
fence on the LEFT.
Trick 2 - Get on top of the lookout tower, hold Z while facing the
center of the village, and side jump to the left. You'll land on top of
a fence.
Jump down into the "secret area". At this point, you
can actually cheat and get a Piece of a Heart early. I won't do it now,
for the sake of the walkthrough.
- I know, I know. It's lame, isn't it? Also, remember to throw the Cuccos
out of here. No matter where they run to, you can find them
afterwards, so throw them over the fence once you get them.
#6 Once you get to the other side, this
one is in the lower part of the area, near a hole. Be careful not to
fall in. Throw this one over the fence and get the final chicken.
|
|
#7 For the last one, once you get into the
secret area, climb up the ladder and grab the unsuspecting Cucco. I like
to fly back to the lady with this one.
|
|
- After you've gathered them all and gotten them in the pen, talk
to the Cucco lady to get a nifty treasure.
|
|
|
- These bottles are used to carry many useful things throughout your
journey. Aww, this one comes empty... |
|
 |

|
| 3.5 Spiders |
|
|
- This next section deals with just getting Gold Skulltula Tokens
in Kakariko as well as paying a visit to the House of Skulltula family.
- To get started, play the Sun's Song. Skulltulas can be found all over
the place, but most are that are outdoors can only be found at night, as
is the case here. After that, just follow your ears or my instructions.
