The game begins with Link sleeping in Marin's house. Link will be awoken by Marin and the first thing you should do when you gain control of Link is head over and talk to Tarin, the other person in the house who is Marin's father. Tarin will give Link his sheild that was found when Link was washed ashore. Exit the house.
Follow the path that leads out of the house. Make your way left two screens and then down five screens to get to shore. Use your shield to avoid being damaged by the enemies and head right two screens. Hold up your shield and push the sea urchin to the right. Head over to your sword that is in the water and an owl will appear. He tells you that you cannot leave the island untill you awaken the Wind Fish. He also tells you to head to the Mysterious Forest. Grab the sword and head back left two screens.
Manuever through the next few screens and make your way back up five screens to get back to the screen with a well. Slice the bushes at the top and jump into the well. Grab the heart piece and exit the well. Head up two screens to the Mysterious Forest.
The owl will appear and will tell you that you will find a key in the Mysterious Forest that you can use to enter Tail Cave south of the Village. After he is finished blabering head up two screens and then right two screens. There will be moblins wakling all throughout the Mysterious Forest. Just slice them with your sword or walk by them. Enter the cave in this screen. Kill the keese in this room with a few simple sword strikes. Slash the ice blocks here and move the rock to open the chest for 50 rupees.
Make your way up and left a screen. Don't bother with the heart piece here for now as you cannot reach it. Push the blocks and exit the cave. There is a toadstool waiting for you at the left of this screen. Head over to it and grab it. Head back into the cave and make your way back to the other side and exit.
From outside the cave head up two screens and right two screens. You will have exited the Mysterious Forest and can see a heart container. You cannot reach it at the moment so head down two screens and right a screen to get to the witches hut. Equip the toadstoal and show it to her. After some mixing she will give you Magic Powder. Exit the hut and head back to the Mysterious Forest.
Head left a screen and down two screens to get back to where the cave was. Head left a screen and up two screens and you will see a Racoon. If you talk to the Racoon, it will give you an obvious hint on what to do. Sprinkle some magic powder and the Racoon will turn to human form and its actually Tarin. He will tell you that he ate a toadstoal and turned into a Racoon.
Now that Tarin is back to normal, the forest is also but back to normal. Head up a screen and open the chest to get the Tail Key. The Owl will appear again and will tell you to head over to Tail Cave and get the instrument there. Head down three screens, left a screen, and down two more to exit the Mysterious Forest. Head down three screens and if you read the sign here it says Tail Cave is to the right, so head right three screens.
Head back left through the bottom passage way, then down, and finally right to get to the entrance of Tail Cave. Use the key at the center pillar and the entrance will open up. Head inside the first dungeon, Tail Cave.
Tail Cave is definately the easiest dungeon in Links Awakening. It has simple puzzles, easy enemies, and it is quite short. Just about what every first dungeon in every Zelda game is like.
From the entrance head left a screne to encounter some hardhat beetles. You cannot defeat these enemies with the items you currently have, however you can still use your sword to push them away and off the sides of the platform. Do so to both of these turtle like creatures and a small key will appear for you in the gray block. Grab it and head left another screen.
Walk towards the chest and four zols will appears. Defeat them and open up the chest to get the Compass. Head back right two screens and then up a screen.
Defeat the two gels and then hit the beetle into the hole. Step on the switch to make a chest appear. Open the chest to get another small key. Then head right a screen.
There are two stalfos and two keese in this room. The keese are simple to defeat but the stalfos will jump away from you when you try to strike at them. Get them against the wall and defeat them and another chest will appear. Open it to get the Dungeon Map. Head up through the one way door.
| Avoid the enemies and open the locked door on the right. Head up and you will notice an owl statue at the top of the screen and three enemies here that have symbols that rotate. The goal here is to strike them all and get matching symbols on all three. This can be tedious. Do so and a chest will appear. Open the chest to get a Stone Beak. This Stone Beak allows you to talk to all the Owl Statues that are found in the dungeon. Each Owl will give you some advice on what to do. Exit the room and then head back left a screen.
|
Avoid the enemies again and head left a screen. Defeat the Mini-Moldorm here and then open the chest doing your best to avoid the Spark that is protecting it. The chest contains another small key. Afterwards head left a screen.
Another Mini-Moldorm can be found in this room. Defeat him and a chest will appear that contains 20 rupees. Head up a screen and push the block up to prevent the spike from moving to the right in this room. Head up through the locked door. Head right and manuver around the blocks, sparks, and gels and head left. Get to the far left and the owl statue here will give you some advice on what to do here. Push the block to match the pattern and the door will open. Head left through it.
There are two spiked beetles in this room and the owl statue will once again give you some advice on what to do here. Hold your shield out at the them and when they hit it they will flip over. Strike them with your sword while they are on their backs. After you defeat both a stairway will appear at the top corner, so head downstairs. There are Goombas here? Isn't this suppose to be Zelda not Mario. You may have noticed already or will notice that there are a lot of Mario references in this game. Kill them and make your way left a screen and then climb the ladder here. Make your way up, passed the spikes and open the chest to get Roc's Feather. This will allow Link to Jump over small gaps.
Head back down and you can get the heart that is in the air using your newly aquired Roc's Feather. Head down the stairs use Roc's Feather to quickly jump over this side scrolling section to the right and back up the stairs here. Head right a screen and jump over the gap here and head down a screen. Head down a screen and then right a screen. Head up a screen and you will see a chest that you cannot reach from this point. In order to reach it and head back down a screen and right through the upper section. Head up, avoid the enemy here and jump over the gap. Use a small key on the block, climb the steps, and head left a screen. Open the chest to get the Nightmare's Key.
Head back right a screen, down a screen, left a screen, and back right through the passage at the bottom.
Head right a screen and then jump over the gap on the right and prepare for the sub-boss of Tail Cave, Rolling Bones. Enter the room and you will immediately start the battle. This could be tricky the first time through. Equip Roc's Feather and your sword for the battle. He will role a spiked log towards Link. Jump over it and try to strike him as many times as possible. Eight strikes with the sword will defeat this guy. If he does get over to the left no worries, he will just roll the log back to the right. So repeat what you just did and jump over it and strike him against. Once he is defeated a red warp will appear. The warp allows a quick way to get between the sub-boss room and the dungeon entrance room. Then head up a screen.
Avoid the spikes and head though the door at the top using your Nightmare's Key. The Nightmare in this dungeon is Moldorm. For those of you who have played a Link to the Past, this boss will seem very familiar. The tail is the weak point of Moldorm. If you get hit you will bounce away from Moldorm. If you happen to fall down on the side, you will fall to the basement, which looks awfully creepy. Just head upstairs and back into the Nightmare Lair and fight Moldorm again. Strike Moldorm in the tail four times to defeat it. After each hit Moldorm will start moving faster.
Once Moldorm is defeated, grab the full Heart Container that is left behind and then head up a screen.
Head up the steps and grab your first instrument, the Full Moon Cello. Afterwards the screen will turn white and it will say ...Swamp... A path opens... in the blooms... Congratulations on beating the first dungeon!
