Staff Openings

Below are some examples of things that happen around here. Positions are not limited to those below! These are just to give you ideas, you aren't forced to fit a specific mould. Feel free to drop us a line with a proposed "position" for yourself. =D

Content Writer
We are looking for somebody who has extensive knowledge of the Legend of Zelda series and has both the time and ambition to help create in-depth guides and walkthroughs.

-Writes full blown walkthroughs and very detailed guides.
-Requires extensive knowledge of games they write guides for.
-Previous walkthrough writing experience is desired.
For most of the games, we have guides already available... but many of them are incomplete, poorly written, and outdated. Help us replace them! =D
Image Wizard
-Works closely with other staff to render artwork and/or take screenshots used in our guides.
-Manipulates images to make them transparent (for example, like those seen on the right).
-An image editing program, such as Gimp, Photoshop, Fireworks, Paintshop, etc, are required. Past experience is highly recommended.

People with this position will "prettify" Nintendo official art, take screenshots from games and work closely with other members of the content team to produce quality guides.

Coding Guru
Our general HTML and CSS experts. Uses <table>, <div> and CSS classes to create pretty boxes and effects to organize content. Works with other members to finalize just about all of the pages found around the site.
-Should have a good grasp of both HTML and CSS.
- Works closely with the rest of the staff to produce dynamic content.
- Image and HTML editing software in particular are recommended for this position (Adobe Dreamweaver, MS Frontpage, Notepad++, etc).
Video Content Specialist
We are looking for somebody who can help create quality video based content for Zelda Dungeon. This includes, but is not limited to, Video Walkthroughs, Boss Guides, and Heart Guides.

-Needs proper hardware/software to capture high quality footage.
-Able to add voice over commentary.

User should also have extensive knowledge and ability of the game that they choose to cover.
Layout Programmer
It is important to the site for our new and dynamic content to be easy to access and navigate. Staff who create layouts will work closely with the rest of us to find ways to make our interface as efficient as possible.

-Requires extensive knowledge in HTML and CSS sheets as well as a general understanding of PHP includes and W3C validation.
- Image and HTML editing software and experience are required for this position.
Media Coordinator
One of our goals is to have all kinds of content, including intriguing images from the visionaries in the game's development and the songs that have gotten stuck in our heads. It's a constant pursuit to have a full collection.

-Gathers media such as midis, soundtracks, comics, official artwork, strategy guide scans, etc.
- Produces the media related pages and revamps old ones.
- Works to improve the Zelda Dungeon Image Gallery.

This is a great position for all you pack rats out there. =)

-NOTE: Zelda Dungeon is just a fan site and we cannot pay people to work here. Although it is just volunteer work, in some cases hardware and/or software can be provided to you to help increase productivity.

-NOTE: If you are hired to Zelda Dungeon, all content that has been written for the site now belongs to the site. If you decide to leave Zelda Dungeon, you may keep anything that you've written, but it will also remain a part of Zelda Dungeon.

-NOTE: Zelda Dungeon has gone through several different staff members in the past. Please, only submit an application if you are absolutely dedicated to working for the site. We are only looking for the best here at Zelda Dungeon.

Requirements/Responsibilities
-Each position has its own direct requirements which are listed in their job description.
-For any content position, website experience is highly recommended.
-Time! You must be able to devote several hours a week for work on site content.
-Proper grammar and spelling are necessary for anyone applying to write content with text. Don't do this. Separating your sentences a bunch. That's a no-no.
-A microphone is not required but highly recommended. Alternatively, a common messenger such as AIM or MSN would be mandatory.
-Please finish any projects you start. =)

So you are interested in working at Zelda Dungeon. You can send an e-mail to me at Mases26@gmail.com. In the e-mail please give me the following information...

Bob: A Crappy Application
Name: Bob
Age: 15
Position Applying For: content contributer
Zelda Games Owned: i play the zeldas bunches so i no alot
Anything Else You'd Like To Add: not really

This application... doesn't tell us anything…! A job application is NOT a survey or an e-mail quiz you send out to all your friends with misspelled words and no punctuation; it's the first impression the employer (or webmaster in this case) will see of you, so some thought put into it is important. This "bulleted list" is to get your thoughts flowing and give you an idea of basic information to tell us. Ideally, we want MUCH more info.

Bob: An Awesome Application
Name: Bob Sample
Age: 15
E-mail: bobs_email@somewhere.com
MSN/Yahoo: bobs_email@somewhere.com
Position Applying For: Secrets/Cheats/Glitch Guide Writer (LttP primarily) – I know that position isn’t in your list, I just made it up :)
Zelda Games Owned: A Link To The Past, Link's Awakening DX, Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass
Past Experience: Don't really have any... I'm good at math, if that helps :P

Anything Else You'd Like To Add:
I love to totally pick apart my games and find all the glitches and stuff in them. I don't really know much about making websites or any of that, but I've always been interested in writing a guide or making a secrets or cheats guide and going into crazy amounts of detail. I see you guys don't really do some of the more in depth secrets sections and stuff though. I love those in depth guides about glitches and easter eggs in games...

Anyway, if I can't do that, I'd still be willing to work on a walkthrough or guide for one of the games I own. I can get emulators to take screenshots probably for some of the older games if that'd help too. I'd like to work on Link To The Past (rather than the others) if possible.

I do want to say though, I'm in school and am on the soccer team. The season's about to begin and we have to practice a lot, so I don't know how much time I can devote to the site... Some weeks, we'll be on the road for games too, so I obviously can't do any site stuff when that happens...

Thanks for considering me and I look forward to hearing back from you guys!
~ Bob

This is, what we would consider, an EXCELLENT application! He's polite, to the point and has a realistic view of what it means to work at a website. It gives us a good grasp of what kind of stuff this guy wants to do and what he's capable of. He also explains his main hobby (soccer), mentioning that he can't always be helping out. We totally understand that (we have lives too) and it's encouraging when the applicant shows us their limitations as well as their strengths.

While our site may not be geared towards secrets, cheats or glitch guides, that does NOT mean we can't use this guy! He shows much promise, which we would never have seen if he’d only sent the other application instead!

Remember, when applying, the thing we want you to show us is what YOU would like to do at the site. There's always going to be “mundane” grunt work to do, but if you have a personal project that you WANT to accomplish, you'll be much more motivated and will make a better guide in the end! We would MUCH RATHER you make a better guide and be happy than give you chores and tasks that make you frustrated or bored because it’s not what you’re interested in. The important thing is to have fun :)

The Application Process
We get applications on a regular basis - sometimes they're infrequent, other times we get bombarded with them. Either way, we handle it the same way: we wait for them to build up, then the staff talks about all of them at once.

  • Here's some important things to know:
  • It may take a few weeks, don't be surprised if that's the case.
  • We wait for them to build up.
  • We wait until most of the staff (in particular the "big people") are present and ready to discuss them. Sometimes it takes awhile before everyone's online at once and everyone's ready to dive into them. I'm sorry to say applications aren't our top priority. Awww!
  • We'll send you a response as soon as we've reviewed your application - we don't give the silent treatment. =P If you haven't heard from us, we haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

It still amazes me how many people send in an application only send us an e-mail three hours later asking if we've looked at it yet. No? We have lives, we haven't had a chance to meet with the staff yet!

Main reasons we might reject an application:
  • No experience. We already have our hands full with people we're training, having more doesn't make us any more effective and just slows down the progress we would be making otherwise.
  • The "offered content" is not as good as we could do with the staff we currently have and/or we already have plans to do something better.
