"I can't beleive you're leaving already!" Saria exclaimed. "it's so exciting
that you finally have a faerie." Link looked up from where he sat on the floor,
packing his bags and grinned at Saria. "I'll be back soon," he replied, then his
face fell. "I just wonder who that girl was." Link remembered seeing a small
girl riding away into the night, her arms outstretched like he could help her in
some way. "I've got to find her," Link said quietly. Saria nodded. "I know." A
loud bang, followed by a few shouts was audible outside. "Saria!" someone
called. She grimaced. "Well, good luck, Link." Saria gave him a quick hug and
departed. Link gathered the remainder of his belongings and placed them into a
bag slung over his shoulder. Navi flitted around his head. "We ready?" she
asked. Link nodded and emerged from his house into the bright sunlight. The
Kokiri children that were outside playing waved to Link and he waved back. He
jumped from his balcony to the lush grass below. Smiling, Link crossed the town
and past an angered Milo onto the bridge which seperated Kokiri Village from the
Lost Woods. "Link, wait!" he heard a voice cry. He turned to see the shy, raven
haired Kokiri girl clutching a small bag like his. "Emilie, what are you doing
here? How did you get by Milo?" Emily silently drew a sword and shield. "I want
to come with you." Link shook his head. "No way, it's much too dangerous-you
realize that? And I've trained with the sword almost all my life!" Emily
resheathed her sword and placed her shield on her back. "I've been training at
the Deku Tree for a while. He's taught me all I need to know." Emilie took a
step closer. "Please..." Link sighed. "Fine, come on." Together they walked into
the Lost Woods and began their greatest adventure.
Felice opened the door, laughing. "Thanks for inviting me, see you guys on duty
tommorrow!" her friends responded with choruses of goodbye. Felice stepped out
into the valley-and almost stepped on a small child. "Aiee!" she screamed and
stepped back into the small house. "What's wrong?" one of her friends asked.
Felice knew that children were not liked in Gerudo Vallery. But to leave one to
be found and ultimatley killed...? "Forgot my bag," Felice lied. "Oh wait,
nevermind, here it is right here!" she said, gathering the child up into her
jacket. She caught a glimpse of it's face. It was a boy. "Must be all that wine
I had!" she laughed, and left, going quickly to her house. There she laid the
boy down on her cot. "Wake up, boy," she said, examining him. He looked no older
than 6 or 7 and looked like he had been through hell and back. He stirred softly
and opened his big blue eyes. "Hello..." Felice said softly. "Hello," the boy
said. "What's your name?" Felice asked. "My name is Zach, what about yours?"
Felice smiled. "My name is Felice." From that day on, Zach lived a secret life
in Felice's hovel, never seeing the sun, only the light of the moon. Felice
explained that the cover of night would allow him to go anywhere undetected. She
taught him how to fight with a spear and how to hunt with a bow. But once the
pink of dawn began to rise, Zach had to flee to his home, for the Gerudos
trusted no men and no children. For five years this nightly ritual went on. One
night, he was practicing with his bow on the range as he did many nights before.
Nabooru had been watching him for many nights, and was mightily impressed with
his skill. "Hey, you!" she called. Zach spun around in horror and began to run.
"Stop, please, I won't hurt you!" Zach stopped running and watched Nabooru walk
over. She bent down on one knee to be eye to eye with him. Nabooru was
mesmerized by his bright blue eyes and smiled. "You don't look too familiar,"
she said eyeing his brown hair. "All Gerudos are known for their bright red
hair." Zach looked at the ground. He was found out for sure, and he knew he was
going to die. "But," Nabooru said, lifting his chin to make him look into her
eyes. "I have watched you for many nights practice with your bow. I have come to
offer you a job." She stood to full height and began to pace back and forth. "I
would offer you a fortress guard position, but that is reserved for females
only. I would take you as a servant, but you're too good a shot for that." She
stopped pacing and looked at him. "So child, would you care to be my guard?"
Zach knew if he rejected her proposal that he would more than likely be killed,
so he quietly nodded. As Nabooru took him back to her castle to get him suited
up, he watched his first sunrise in five years.
TEN YEARS LATER....
"I got your back!" Emilie shouted to Link as she fired an arrow into the Armos'
revealed eye. The Armos stopped moving. "we did it!" Link cheered. "Watch out!"
Navi warned, just as the Armos exploded. Link and Emilie were blown back into
the wall from the blast. Emilie got up immediatley after the dust settled, but
Link lay slumped against the wall. Staying calm, Emilie reached into Link's bag
and pulled out a bottle containing a stray faerie. She uncorked the bottle and
let the faerie free. It circled around Link, slowly at first, then faster until
it dissapered altogether. Link awoke, and got to his feet. "Thanks," he said,
taking the empty bottle Emilie offered. The two began to cross the room when a
floormaster unexpectedly grabbed Emilie. "Link!" she screamed. "Go on without
me, I'll catch up to you later!" her voice echoed the halls of the Gerudo
dungeon. Link hated it when she did that, but she did seem to always make it
back from wherever she was taken. So Link ventured on while his sidekick was
taken, not to the beginning of the dungeon as normal floormasters do, but rather
to a large throne room. Emilie landed hard on the sandstone floor. "Hello?" she
called, getting to her feet and circling around as not to be attacked from
behind. A movement from near the giant Gerudo statue made her jump and face it.
She carefully survayed the area and called, not expecting an answer, "Is anyone
there?" A man swung down from the rafters and landed gracefully on the floor.
"Yes." he said, standing to full height. Emilie examined him; he was very tall
with shaggy brown hair and the bluest eyes she'd ever seen. Hastily, Emilie drew
her sword. The man calmly waled over and disarmed her. He wasn't harmed as he
grabbed the blade of her weapon, and Emilie recognized the gauntlets. She'd seen
one other person with them, and he'd stolen them. Link had been somewhere in
Zora Bay and Emilie watched a pirate ship dock at the professor's lab. The
captain, a tall man with simliar brown hair and blue eyes had gone in and killed
the professor, robbed it and burned it into the sea, right before her eyes. She
watched him stare at the gauntlets in disgust and throw them to a crew mate, who
threw them into a bag that seemed already full. Emilie was so caught up in the
action, she'd barely noticed that Link had run up next to her. As they untied
the sails, Link screamed, "Fabian! We'll get you for this!" The captain laughed.
"What, a child?" and threw the bag with the gauntlets in it overboard. But that
was seven years ago, Emilie thought. This couldn't be..."Fabian?" Emilie
questioned, pulling out of her reverie. The man nearly dropped the sword he was
now examining. "How do you know that name?" he asked, turning the blade on
Emilie. She noticed his hand was shaking. "He's a pirate, everyone knows him."
she said casually. The man shook his head. "He kills everyone he pirates,or
knows witnessed, and leaves no survivors," Emilie rasied an eyebrow. "Untrue.
How come I got away?" The man shrugged. "I don't know." Emilie glared at him.
"Are you Fabian" He shook his head. "No, my name is Zach. I washed up on the
Zora coast when I was seven and wandered for days until I was taken in here." He
lowered her sword. "Who might you be?" "I am Emilie," Emilie replied, tossing
her long raven hair. "A child of the Kokiri, travelling with Link." Zach
whistled a low whistle. "Obviously not a child anymore, now are you?" Emilie had
indeed aged like any normal chid, along with Link. "Once a Kokiri child leaves
the safety of the forest, he or she may age and die. Many stay to be children
eternally." Zach nodded. "You and this Link, are you the first Kokiris who have
left the forest?" Emilie shook her head as a lady dressed in flowy pink pants
and a tube top came in. Her long red hair was up in a ponytail, secured by a
large topaz. "Who have we got here?" she asked. Zach shoved Emilie forward to
meet the woman. "Well, well, well. If it isn't Emilie, we've been expecting
you." She drew a dagger from the folds of her pants and held it against Emilie's
neck. "I am Nabooru, a name you will be hearing a lot around Gerudo Valley. But
no time for chat, where is Link? And where are the silver gauntlets he knows I
seek?" Emilie winced. "Your floormaster brought me here, and I have no clue as
to where Link is. As for the gauntlets, I beleive that is what Link is searching
for at this moment." Nabooru pressed the dagger harder against her neck. "Don't
be telling me lies now, because I will find out one way or another." Zach pulled
Nabooru away from Emilie's neck. "Don't kill her, she has valuable information
that I will get out of her." Nabooru grinned. "Does she now? In that case, she's
yours to interrogate." Zach nodded. "Any information I retreive will be sent to
you," Nabooru smiled and began to walk away. "Doing your job as always, well, I
trust you to that," Once Nabooru had dissapeared, Zach turned to Emilie. "You're
very calm, aren't you?" Emilie nodded. "Well, it's a good thing, because Nabooru
loves to kill jumpy people. Come with me, you know about my past," Before Emilie
could say anything, Zach grabbed her hand and led her down a hallway lit by
torches. He grabbed a torch with his spare hand and led her to a small room with
two cots on either end. Zach placed the torch in a holder on the wall and closed
the door. "Sit," he said, beckoning to one of the cots. Emilie did as was told,
and watched Zach sit on the other cot. "On that day, ten years ago, Fabian cast
his own son overboard with just a pair of gauntlets he'd stolen." Emilie's mind
flashed back to Fabian's crewman placing the gauntlets in the bag, and Fabian
throwing the bag overboard. "But the gauntlets were in a bag-where was the son?
Could he have been...?" Zach grimaced. "And let me tell you, it was as hard as
hell to get out of that bag." Shocked, Emilie's hands flew up to her mouth.
"Y-you're...?" Zach nodded. "But you're the only one who knows now." Confused,
Emiie asked, "Why did you tell me, of all people?" Zach shrugged. "I've watched
your progress through our dungeons and it's most impressive. I was wondering if
you'd help me find and kill my father, the pirate, Fabian." Emilie sighed. "What
about Link, where would he go? And Nabooru? Don't you have to serve her or
something?" Zach grinned. "The thing is, I just don't care anymore. I've been
planning escape ever since word of Link and the silver gauntlets reached here.
So what other time than now?" Emilie thought. "But what if this is just a plan
to kill me? You're the servant-" Zach glared at Emilie and cut in, "-bodyguard."
Emily shrugged, "Whatever-to my sworn enemy, how can I trust you?" "I guess you
really can't but I need the help, so, are you in or must I do it alone?" "Shake
on it," Emilie said, reaching out her hand. Zach took it and the two grinned at
each other at their new covenant.
"Follow me," Zach whispered to Emilie, who trailed behind in a Gerudo guard
outfit. "It's itchy..." whined Emilie. "Shh, just deal with it, or we'll get
caught!" Emilie sighed and pulled up the veil covering her face. Zach put an arm
around her waist and Emilie began to giggle. All was part of the plan. The two
guards stopped to stare, then began to laugh. "Zach! Who is that you're taking
out?" Zach winked. "Just a friend," The two continued on, Zach pretending to
whisper and Emilie giggling periodically. "Bye!" The Gerudo guards called as
they left the fortress area. Once across the bridge, Emilie pulled down the veil
and Zach crossed his arms. Emilie raised an eyebrow at him. "Well it worked,
didn't it?" He asked. Emilie nodded. "Let's just go," she said, and put two
fingers up to her mouth and whistled. A large black mare galloped up the valley
entrance, followed by a chesnut colored horse. Emilie put her hands on her hips.
"That's not one of my horses!" The chesnut horse pawed the ground and snorted.
Zach grinned. "I'll name him Spark-the Yellow Dart -Lightning." Shaking her
head, Emilie climbed on the black mare and said, "You are bizzare." Zach climbed
onto Spark and they rode into Hyrule field. "So where IS Fabian now?" Emilie
called over to Zach. "He's over in Zora Bay again-we'd better hurry." Emilie
nodded and kicked her horse to go faster. Zach followed suit. They reached the
bay by dawn, and saw the red sails of Fabian's ship. Fabian could be seen on
board, directing his men to put the loot in different places. Determination
flashed in Zach's eye, and he leapt from his horse into the sand. He did a
somersault and neatly stood, unharmed, sword drawn. Impressed, Emilie stopped
her horse and dismounted. She reached to draw her sword but Zach stopped her.
"This is a duel; you're my second, in case I die." Emilie nodded, and put her
sword the rest of the way in the sheath. "Fabian!" Zach shouted from shore, to
the pirate on deck. "I, your son, challenge you to a duel!" From the shore, it
looked like Fabian fell over, but no one could be too sure. He jumped into a
boat attached to the ship and cut it loose, then rowed to shore. "Is it
really...?!" Fabian exclaimed as he began to walk towards Zach. "It is." Zach
said coldly, staring daggers through his father. Fabian smiled. "So my son, we
are reunited," Zach backed away. "In case you've forgotten, you tried to kill me
when I was seven," Fabian stood and thought. "Did I? Hmm, I don't seem to
remember." Filled with rage, Zach screamed, "Remember this!" and took a stab at
Fabian. Fabian dodged it, and drew his sword. "Hostile, aren't you? Just like
your mother!" Fabian slashed at Zach, who parried and the two began to duel.
Emilie watched in amazement; the duel was more like a dance than two people
trying to cut each other to ribbons. Fabian would strike, and Zach would block,
the Zach would strike and Fabian would parry the move. She got so caught up,
that she didn't even see the wounds that Zach had inflicted on Fabian until the
blood stained the sand, and the water came up and became stained with blood as
well. Zach panted, and sighed. "Goodbye, father," he said, kneeling in the sand
to catch his breath. Then, Zach took his father's sword and placed it into his
own sheath. He then took his own blade and stabbed it into the sand, and placed
his father's hat on it as a sort of memorial site. "Let's go," Zach said,
smiling. Emilie nodded and they both mounted their horses. "Where are we going?"
Emilie asked over the pounding hooves of the horses. "I don't know," Zach said.
"Anywhere but Gerudo village." Emilie smiled. "I know just the place..."
Emilie and Zach sat on the roof of the shooting gallery in Kakariko Village,
watching the sun set. "I'm sorry about your dad, being, you know, a pirate."
Emilie said softly. "It's okay," Zach replied. "What was in the past was in the
past. All that matters is what happens now. And for now, this is the best place
to be." Emilie smiled. "Well said," and laid back to bask in the sun's final
rays. Zach returned her smile. Emilie stared at the sky as if she was sad. "The
adventure isn't over though..." Zach nodded. "The adventure is never over...it
will never be over."
Chapter Two
The wind blew back Emilie's long, black hair, and she smiled at the coming of
the wind. Wind brought change, and wiped away the past, thought Emilie. She
grimly recalled Zach and his father the pirate, Fabian dueling. Emilie drew her
telescope and looked down from her perch in Kakariko village, and saw Zach
waving to her. He cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted for her to come
down. Emilie nodded, and swiftly jumped off the edge, landing gracefully and
unharmed. She stood to full height, not quite as tall as Zach, and smiled. "Nice
landing," said Zach. Emilie laughed. "It's something I used to do a lot in the
Kokiri forest," Her smile faded. "You miss them, don't you?" Zach asked. Emilie
nodded, her eyes focused on a faraway thought. "If I ever went back, they
wouldn't recognize me." Zach shrugged. "Their loss," He reached into his back,
dug out a seemingly empty bottle, and handed it to Emilie. "I killed a Poe
outside the castle, and then caught it's spirit in a bottle, see?" Emilie gazed
into the bottle and saw a purpleish flame blazing inside. Inside the flame were
two empty spots that seemed to be eyes, and a creepy empty space for a grin.
"I've heard you can sell these to a person in town," Zach added, taking the
bottle back from Emilie. "I'll go check it out some time." Emilie nodded. "I've
been," she said. "It's quite strange: the witch knows your name, and seems to
know everything about you." Off in the distance, a rooster crowed and the sun
sank lower in the sky. "It's getting late, and I promised Malon I'd help deliver
some milk, so I'd better be going," Emilie said. Zach nodded. "See you in a few
hours then!" Emilie smiled, and put two fingers to her mouth and whistled two
notes; the second higher than the first. A large black mare came galloping into
the heart of the village, and Emilie leapt onto the horse, and sped off into the
setting sun. Zach turned and walked back to their house, not knowing that would
be the last time he would see Emilie in a long time.
Emilie rode along the path to Lon Lon Ranch, the sun's rays barely illuminating
the way. As soon as the sun had dissapered behind Death Mountain, Emilie began
to lose her way. The clouds had covered the moon and the path was barely
visible. Then, behind her, she heard the sound of pounding hooves. She spurred
her horse to go faster, but the other horses caught up to her, being much
faster. Then, something hit her in the back of the head, and her scream echoed
through the night as she blacked out...
Zach awoke from his nightmare. It was about Emilie, and her being in danger.
Thank god it's only a dream, he thought. Pushing aside the covers, he got out of
his bed and slipped some clothes on. As he walked out the door of his house, he
noticed the sun was high up in the sky and it was late in the afternoon. Emilie
must have forgotten to wake me up, and I must have overslept, Zach thought
grimly. She's probably out doing buisness with someone, or helping Malon. He
gathered his scimitar and the reins to Spark, and rode out of Kakariko Village.
Maybe she's still at Lon Lon Ranch, Zach thought, riding off towards the
northern entrance. He envisioned finding her there and them laughing about his
dream. But that scream was so real, he thought, recalling the piercing scream
that had aroused him from his sleep. Zach thought about the dream and Emilie
until he reached Lon Lon Ranch. He quickly dismounted once inside, and dashed to
the horse ring. Malon was standing in the center, feeding her horse Epona. Malon
looked up and saw Zach, running towards her as if she knew the answer to life
itself. "Hello, Zach," Malon said as he reached her. "Malon! Did Emilie come
here last night?" Zach asked, panting heavily. Malon shook her head. "No, I had
to deliver the milk all by myself. Do you know where she went?" Malon seemed
concerned about her friend almost as much as Zach was. Zach shook his head, and
took a breath. "She never came back last night, and I had this dream that she
was attacked..." Zach explained his dream to Malon, who was quiet until the end
of his story. "...and then I woke up after Emilie screamed," Malon bit her lip.
"Oh, my, this isn't good at all," She turned and brushed some flies off Epona's
back. "What's not good?" Zach asked. Malon faced him again, and began to
explain: "Often times, I've had people help me deliver milk, and sometimes they
never even showed up. The ones who did were always white as a sheet, and told me
about some bandits who came up along behind them. They would usually end that
the victim stumbled in here by accident, or were knocked off their horse, and
ran for here. No one has been able to catch these bandits, and they've been
bothering us for years. I'm afraid that Emilie may have been kidnapped, just
like in your dream." Zach shook his head as Malon finished her story. "No,
there's no way. First of all I don't posess the inner eye or whatever, so I
can't get propetical dreams like Princess Zelda does. And second of all, the
only bandits around here are the Gerudo, and they wouldn't dare kidnap Emilie!"
Sighing, Malon took Epona's reins and began to walk away, before replying, "or
would they?"
Zach left Lon Lon Ranch, frusterated and confused. Why would the Gerudos kidnap
Emilie? He absentmindedly rode into town, when he remembered the witch buying
Poes. "Maybe she'd help!" Zach said out loud, dismounting his horse and walking
into the shop. Once inside, he saw a large cage with identical spirits like his
except for color, a large bed, and a heavily veiled person sitting on the bed.
The person had a cane, and every so often, it would rap on the bars of the cage,
causing the spirits to fall silent from their meaningless chatter. Zach
carefully entered further in the shop, fearing that something bad would happen
to him. "Zach, do not be afraid of me, come in, come in, and let's see what
buisness we can do with your Poe there." the witch's voice cackled. Zach
carefully avoided the clay jars so they wouldn't break, and came to the witch.
"I was wondering-" Zach began, but the witch cut him off. "-Whether or not your
love is safe, well yes, she is," the witch finished. Zach shook his head. "No,
its not like that at all, see-" He was once again cut off by the witch. "-You
don't think you love her, but time will tell whether you do or don't." Zach
crossed his amrs, refusing to beleive what the witch was saying. "Come on now,
don't be bitter, I just have a way of knowing things, just like you do, Zach."
"But I don't posess-"
"-Inner sight, of course you don't think you do, but what about that dream last
night?"
"That was a mere-"
"-Coincidence, I'm sure, now are you going to listen to what I have to say about
rescuing your love or not?"
Zach fell silent, both irritated and confused at the words the witch spoke.
"To rescue the one you love, you must first travel to the Zora Bay. There is
unfinished buisness there. Then you must go to Gerudo Bay and rekindle
friendships with those you left behind two years ago. Only then will you get her
back."
"Yeah, but what if she's not there? What if they killed her?"
The witch fell silent for a moment, and the only noise was the meaningless words
of the Poes.
"I do not posess the answer of death, for the Inner Eye knows when enough is
enough. But for now you must go. Time is wasting, and if you delay any further,
this girl may die."
Zach raced out the door, all too glad to accept the invitation of leaving. He
clambered onto Spark and raced off towards Zora Bay. Unfinished buisness? Zach
thought. But what have I done in Zora Bay?
A few weeks ago...
Fabian climbed to his feet with the help of his crew. Angered at the thought of
his own son trying to kill him, he grabbed his hat from the sword on which it
was resting. He reached for his own sword, finding the sheath empty. A few
spiders crawled out from the sheath, reminding him of the ones he'd help
Ganondorf curse. Fabian pushed his hair back out of his face and grabbed the
sword stuck in the sand. "This sword is better than being unarmed," he grinned
insanely, and placed the sword into the empty sheath. "'Ow what?" one of this
crew asked. "Now, we wait."
Spark and Zach arrived at Zora Bay in record time. The Zoras that normally
walked the beaches were gone, and out to sea, a large pirate ship could be seen.
"Fabian..." Zach fumed. He dismounted and raced to the shoreline. "Fabian!" He
shouted louder in the ship's direction. He felt something sharp and metal press
up against his neck, and heard a voice ask, "Yes?" Zach closed his eyes and
inwardly groaned. So it ends here...? He thought. It doesn't have to. A voice
said in his mind. Who are you? He asked. I am Koul, the faerie that accompanied
Emilie while she was in Kokiri forest. But one day, she abruptly left and never
told me where she was going. So I am here, following you and trying to find her.
The voice replied. So, you're here now? Zach asked. Open your eyes! Zach opened
his eyes and saw a small red faerie in front of him. He watched Koul fly around
behind him, and heard Fabian cry out. The knife that was being held to his neck
fell to the sand and Zach abruptly grabbed it. "Use it!" Koul shouted. Obeying
the faerie, Zach grabbed the blade from the sand and slit the pirate's throat.
Rage filled him as an image of Emilie locked up in a cell filled his mind. He
stabbed everywhere that his knife would cut, and soon, he was panting heavily,
the blade red with blood. Koul flew down to Fabian's wrist. "There's no pulse,"
he said, then flying up around Zach. "You killed him! Now the Zoras are free of
the dread pirate Fabian!" Zach nodded. "But why didn't I really kill him last
time?" Koul laughed. "I don't know kid, but hey, at least Fabian really is dead
this time!" Zach shrugged. "Well, let's go find Emilie, that weird vendor said
she'd be somewhere in Gerudo Valley." Zach placed the knife in the small bag he
was carrying, and rode off towards Gerudo Valley with hopes of finding Emilie
safe in his heart.
They reached Gerudo Valley by nightfall, glad for the cover that the clouds had
granted. It's been a while since I've done this, Zach thought, remembering his
years of darkness. The two approached the fortress carefully, unsure of whether
or not the guards would throw them into a cell or not. "Koul," Zach whispered to
the faerie. "I want you to go look for a guard named Felice. Once you find her,
tell me where she's posted." Koul flew off into the heart of the guards and
began the search for the guard who had raised Zach. Koul flew back not seconds
later, pointing Zach in the direction of an older Gerudo by the door of the
fortress. "Perfect!" Zach whispered, and tossed a rock at her. It hit next to
the wall, and Felice looked over to where Zach was. Zach waved, and he could
tell Felice was smiling behind her veil. Once the other guards had turned their
backs on him, he raced up to meet her. "Zach! What are you doing here? Where
have you been?" She had a million questions for him, all of which he answered
politely. "I see, so you think that this girl is here?" Zach nodded. Felice
smiled. "Well, come to think of it, I think I did see a girl with long black
hair being put into cell number 14." Zach returned her smile. "Thank you,
Felice," Felice nodded. "Go get her, boy!" she whispered as he ran into the
fortress. Zach raced down the hallway until he came across a cell with the Roman
numeral for 14 above it. Footsteps not his own echoed down the hallway.
Frantically, he took the keys off the wall and let himself in. Once in, he shut
the door and waited. "Za-?" Emilie asked from somewhere in the room. "Shh!" Zach
hissed, and listened for the footsteps to pass. They stopped right outside the
cell, then passed on. Zach exhaled, and saw Emilie come out of the shadows. Her
once shiny black hair was dull and her once eager eyes were empty. At seeing
him, her eyes lit up. "Zach!" She ran to him, and he held her in his arms for as
long as she stayed. Her tearstained eyes looked up into his, and she begged,
"Please, get me out of here..." Zach nodded. "Koul is patrolling the hallway,
and he'll tell us when it's safe to go." Emilie smiled faintly. "Koul...? You
found...?" Zach shrugged. "More like he found me," As if on cue, Koul flitted
through the keyhole and beckoned that it was safe for them to go. Zach took
Emilie by the hand, and the two dashed out the back entrance, unseen by guards.
There, Spark was waiting for them. They jumped on and, with quick thanks to an
also waiting Felice, rode back to Kakariko village.
The one you love...the witch's words rang in the back of Zach's head weeks
afterward. But did he really love Emilie? Every time he saw her, she seemed more
beautiful. Her longings to return to the Kokiri Forest were deepening, and she
seemed to be less happy. One day, Emilie woke up to find a note on the bedside
table. "Emilie," it said, "Go outside, there I have something waiting for you."
It was signed by Zach. Curious, Emilie ventured outside to find him waiting on
his horse. "Come on," he called. "Let's go!" "Where are we going?" Emilie asked.
"I'll show you if you come with me," He reached out his hand. Emilie took it and
they rode for about two hours until they reached the Lost Woods. "Zach..."
Emilie said as they reached the bridge crossing into the Kokiri Forest. "You
didn't have to," Zach shook his head. "You'll be happiest here, I know it. And
if you need me, I'll be in Kakariko, or the Valley," Emilie hesitated. "Don't
worry about me, I'll always be here for you..." Zach said, passing Emilie's
things to her. Emilie clutched them in her arms. "Well...this is goodbye for
now, then," Emilie said. "I'll miss you," she added. Zach smiled. "I'll miss you
too, but I'll visit as often as I can, I promise." Spark reared, and Zach set
off back to Kakariko. "Goodbye..." Emilie murmured with tears in her eyes. "We
will meet again."
