My favorite A Link Between Worlds characters

ParkerFebruary 16th, 2014 by Parker

ALBW_Fav_headIn 1986, The Legend of Zelda introduced some of the most recognizable video game superstars of all time, and since then, each new Zelda game has added to the series’s dramatis personae, introducing new characters and re-imagining familiar ones. A Link Between Worlds, the most recent continuation of the Zelda legend, is no different. It brings together a diverse cast of fun and likable characters, doing its best to make each one – no matter how minor – stand out. To celebrate this achievement, I’ve decided to highlight my absolute favorite characters from the game.

Without further delay, find out which A Link Between WorldS characters made a strong impression on me after the jump.

#6 – Bee Guy

“Spending my days surrounded by a buzzy swarm of bees has always been my fondest dream.”

Bee_GuyHyrule has been home to many wacky characters with unconventional interests. Between Tingle wanting to become a fairy and Aigitha taking bug collecting to creepy extremes, you’d think we’d have seen the weirdest of them by now. This enthusiastic fan of buzzing creatures from A Link Between Worlds, however, proved that Nintendo hasn’t run out of freaky character concepts.

Wearing one of the goofiest costumes ever seen in a Zelda game, Bee Guy – as the odd little man is called – has turned his Kakariko Village home into a shrine to his honey-producing friends. He even promised Link top dollar for capturing and bottling bees for him. When someone displays such unadulterated adoration and passion for something, it’s hard not to remember their antics with a smile. He also has a wealth of bee puns, and who doesn’t love those?

#5 – Mother Maiamai

“They call out with such cute, chirping sounds. Yet they must be so sad, missing their Mother Maiamai.”

ALBW_Mother MaiamaiIt’s hard not to empathize with Mother Maiamai. Not only did she lose all her children before the start of the game, but some jerk then decided to seal her inside a cave. Thankfully, Link came along to free the strange creature, and promised to track down her Lost Maiamais.

Mother Maiamai’s bulbous squid-like appearance is only the first hint to her otherworldly origins. She overflows with alien powers, including the ability to  jump between worlds and enhance Link’s items by swallowing them. Like a friendly eldritch abomination, Mother Maiamai is one inter-dimensional squid creature you want on your side.

#4 – Gulley

“So you’d better make sure you rescue all seven of us Sevensages. Wow, that’s really a mouthful!”

ALBW_GulleyMy curiosity was piqued when Nintendo released concept art for A Link Between Worlds showing a young boy who also wore Link’s signature green cap. Based off his appearance alone, I incorrectly guessed that he was going to be Link’s little brother in the game. As we all know now, Gulley isn’t a blood relation of our favorite hero, but the son of Link’s blacksmith mentor. This, however, didn’t stop the developers from giving the two boys a brotherly relationship.

Gulley is surprisingly conscientious for his age. Not wanting to see Link get yelled at for being late to work, he wakes him at the start of the game, showing clear concern for the sleepyhead hero-to-be. Link eventually returns the favor when the younger boy is abducted by Yuga. Unlike many of Gulley’s fellow Sages, Link had a personal reason for freeing him besides the need to save Hyrule. Knowing that Gulley’s parents were drowning in worry at home created powerful motivation for rescuing the little guy.

#3 – Yuga

”I will use the Sages to reach the one who shall help me attain true beauty. I mean, of course… GANON!”

ALBW_YugaAfter the success of Ghirahim as Skyward Sword lively antagonist, Nintendo decided to take flamboyant villainy to the next level in  A Link Between WorldS, creating the drag-queen-esque magician Yuga to serve as the game’s villain. Taking on the look of a clownish witch, Yuga spends the story’s first act kidnapping the Seven Sages of Hyrule. In an outrageous display of his malevolent powers, he transforms each of his successive captives into paintings.

Between his disturbing fixation on the beauty of his captives, and his lack of anything close to a moral compass, Yuga is a fun villain to see in action. He is vanity personified, a sociopath with a twisted aesthetic taste. He takes advantage of each of his scenes to put on a theatrical display of wickedness. He showers petty criticism on the people around him, reveling in his shallow gloating. His rude behavior is only matched by his cruelty; his willingness to make the people around him miserable for the sake of his own selfish desires. He has everything a good Zelda villain should have: an over-the-top love-to-hate personality.

#2 – Ravio

“I have some big news for you. You may know me as the rental guy. But now I’m in the sales biz too!”

ALBW_Ravio_That the whimsical and friendly item merchant Ravio made my list shouldn’t come as a big surprise. Ravio is the character people will remember from A Link Between Worlds, due both to his unique fashion sense and the central gameplay role he plays. Donning a purple rabbit suit that obscures his face, Ravio lent and sold Link an arsenal of equipment to aid him on his quest – for the right price of course.

Accompanied by his pet bird, Sheerow, Ravio is a crafty merchant with good intentions. He encouraged Link to succeed on his quest, offering him a kind word whenever he was faced with setbacks. Without spoiling too much, the reveal of his true identity was a surprise twist that tied perfectly into the game’s fiction. His noble heart and laid-back personality, however, are what grounded Ravio as a likable character. Like the Happy Mask Salesman, Ravio is one eccentric Zelda merchant who will be remembered for years to come.

#1 – Irene

“All right, Irene’s Taxi here. That’ll be 9,999 Rupees. Nah, just messing with your head. I couldn’t take money from you. So buckle up.”

2584534-4848818444-IreneThe young witch Irene is the closest to a companion Link has on his quest to thwart Yuga. Throughout the game, her broom provides him with dedicated fast travel, whisking him from location to location. This immediately sets Irene up as a legitimately useful character. All the while, her snarky and spur-of-the-moment personality endeared her as a likable person.

I especially like Irene’s pragmatic reason for acting as Link’s dedicated taxi service. She only started helping him because a fortune teller predicated that she would need a hero to save her sometime in the future. She then gradually befriended the boy, personally giving him rides until she was kidnapped during Yuga’s hunt for the Seven Sages. After Link fulfilled the fortune teller’s initial prophesy, she continued to aid him by directing her broom from the Sacred Realm.

The developers succeeded at building a subtle, yet endearing friendship between Link and Irene. Her character, however, does not revolve entirely around the young hero. She is also shown to be close to her grandmother, who runs Hyrule’s largest potion shop. Reuniting the elderly woman and her spunky granddaughter serves as further motivation for Link to succeed on his quest. Irene is a witch with personality, which is why she is my favorite character from A Link Between Worlds.

          • michkori

Think about it, snes controller had a b x and y buttons, PS have two shoulder buttons and two analog sticks and 4 buttons but Nintendo and PS controllers aren’t as bulky.

          • Ghirahim

That makes no sense. Why would a game with ‘Wii U’ in it’s title be on the Wii U? Shouldn’t it be on the 3DS or something?

      • YoshiFan101

that gets me thinking, what is your favourite Zelda character?

    • TheHylianPixels

So much love, but so much hate…(about Tingle, BTW)

  • LittleGreen

My favourite was Ravio. Not many of the other characters had personalities except Yuga, Hilda and Irene.

  • UltimateTankOP

Was I the only one shocked to find out Yuga was a guy?

    • Xantos

Probably. Though now that you mention it, he could have been either gender and still played his role well.

    • The Velocirapture

Did you know that Yuga is just his gender backwards? Yuga. a guY?

    • StationaryBomb

I seriously thought he was a girl because of his highly feminine stature, but apparently the media and everyone else say he is a guy.

  • UltimateTankOP

I really liked Hilda and her concept as some sort of “pseudo-antagonist”. I just wish they had made her the final boss instead of yet another Ganon fight. For once we would have been up against someone who genuinely believed in what they were fighting for, instead of just some generic “evil for the sake of evil”.

There was nothing particularly wrong with what we got, but I do see it as a missed opportunity.

  • YoshiFan101

mines Zelda or Ravio! you wouldn’t have survived without Ravio, cause he gives you all the items you need :) and I like Zelda because she’s just Zelda.

  • A Link to the Comments

I’m surprised Hilda didn’t make the cut. She is easily my favourite character of ALBW and one one my favourite in the entire series.

“To be driven to such desperation” – Zelda.

  • StationaryBomb

I like Ravio the most. Because (SPOLIERS DON’T TELL ME I DIDN’T WARN YA!) At the end of the game once I saw Ravio was me, I just outburst with “WTF YOU ARSE YOU MAKE ME PAY YOU RUPEES FOR THE VERY THING THAT SAVES YOUR WORLD! I KNEW IT YOU WERE A SCAMER! *grumble grumble*” but I admire him for that :P also I would like a pet Sheerow, whatever kind of animal that is.

    • TheHylianPixels

Sheerow is a flying bird mouse that can somehow go inside of your pouch and has the ability to carry 9 items at once.

  • just another hylian

go to the lost woods in hyrule(pick the entrance near rosso´s house) use the hookshot in a tree in the other side of a big hole and enter in the door(a tunnel or something)…talk to this guy and he will tell you a lot of gossips(sorry for the english)

  • TheMightyDekuWarrior

EVERYBODY BOW TO THE GREAT LORD, BEE GUY.

But seriously, Ravio. Ravio was best.

    • OcarinaPlayerOfTime

I think the bee guy might be my favorite just because of how derpy he looks :3 http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131208054943/zelda/images/6/6f/Bee_Guy.png

      • TheMightyDekuWarrior

        • OcarinaPlayerOfTime

          • TheMightyDekuWarrior

Since I ate that spicy Empanada.

          • OcarinaPlayerOfTime

            Holy guacamole!

          • michkori

            Disgusting

          • OcarinaPlayerOfTime

            I love guacamole, actually

          • michkori

            Its disgusting

          • Knots

Is this like, Hyrulean or something? Dekunese?

          • TheMightyDekuWarrior

            Japanese, actually.

          • TheMightyDekuWarrior

Wood woo oow wod wood. (Now it’s Dekunese)

          • OcarinaPlayerOfTime

          • TheMightyDekuWarrior

I have a beautiful choice of words, hmm?

          • Egorator

How dod you translate from Deku to English? TELL ME NOW O GOOGLE TRANSLATE MAGICIAN!

          • OcarinaPlayerOfTime

            Photoshop :3

          • TheHylianPixels

Probably unintentionally, watashi means “a willingness to”. Just thought I’d point that to.

          • TheMightyDekuWarrior

I know very little Japanese. XD

          • TheHylianPixels

Kon’nichiwa, kyōdaina deku no senshi. Watashi ga itte iru mono o kangaedasu, omedetōgozaimasu! Imasuga, sumātona apurōchi o tori, gūguru hon’yaku o shiyō suru koto ga dekimasu.

See if you can crack this! Good Luck!

          • TheMightyDekuWarrior

Welp! I couldn’t figure it out no matter how hard I tried. I know the first part is my name, but I got confused after that. I’m currently learning Japanese, so I’m not that experienced. It’s a hard language to learn.

          • StationaryBomb

The words that were born with the language are hard to learn. The newer American words in Japanese are VERY easy to learn takushi (Taxi), biiru (Beer), hoteru (Hotel).

          • StationaryBomb

“Without correct word placement. In Japanese if translated words are in front of their objects to say.”

Hello, mighty deku the warrior. I (can’t understand) think, congratulations! Square (Yeah I don’t think thats right), (cant understand) grass, Google Translate do use deku.

Well its obvious Deku was supposed to use Google Translate but they don’t have a Romaji to English translator, nor is there one anywhere else. A bad translation may have happened on “Square” and some other words. They looked like words I knew but spelled weird. The stuff I can’t understand, well I can’t understand. I tried my best :P

          • TheHylianPixels

Wow! What website did you use to learn Japanese? Because apparently, Google Translate sucks at real Japanese.

          • StationaryBomb

            I used mango languages.

I don’t think its free but I used it through the library so it is free.

Or upgrade your account with a subscription plan which unlocks all the courses online.

            Its 15$ a month and 120$ a year.

Buying the whole year saves $60.

If you plan on learning all of Japanese definitely go for the yearly plan.

            Hope that helps :)

          • TheHylianPixels

That’s a LOT of instructions. Sorry for wasting your time, but I’m not actually considering learning Japanese. I just wanted to know if you used Rosetta Stone or something like that.

          • StationaryBomb

Oh no, thats okay :P Also in my opinion Rosetta Stone doesn’t teach very well, I kept failing over and over again at their invisible tests and other crazy stuff. Too much stress not enough learning.

          • StationaryBomb

I know how to navigate the country of Japanese, not offend people, ask for most things, etc. I know all the basics essentially. My online Japanese course does well :3 also I know Hirigana. (XD auto correct read Hirigana as Michigan)

          • TheMightyDekuWarrior

I love their culture. It’s weird, I like weird things.

          • StationaryBomb

Nippon wa totemo kawaii desu. Chibi wa ai ya anime o dakishime te iru hitsuyō ga ari, subete gabakudan de aru.

In other words: Japan is so cute. Everything chibi must be hugged with love and anime is the bomb.

I also learned a lot of Japanese from hearing words in anime repeated over and over again because they are basic speech.

PS: I had to look up hugged :( I MUST LEARN MORE!

          • TheMightyDekuWarrior

I wanna get Rosetta Stone for learning the rest of the language, but it’s kind of expensive. You have better Japanese than me. And about anime, did you ever watch the Kirby anime? I was watching some of the old episodes today.

          • StationaryBomb

Don’t use Rosetta Stone, its overpriced, doesn’t teach very well, and is overall confusing. Just learn it for free if you have “Mango Languages” on your library’s website or for $20 at https://www.yesjapan.com/

Anyways I did watch the Kirby anime. I couldn’t watch much though because when I was younger I always had to go to sparring at my Karate place the same time Kirby aired. We used a VHS to record it but the VHS player broke XD. Also I don’t have cable :( and Netflix instant que sucks. They don’t add shows unless its like 5 years after it aired :I and HuluPlus is just crappy quality. Amazon prime video is decent but not very large. That was quite off topic but anyways for the little ammount of Kirby anime I watched was in English and was quite cheezy now that I look back on it XD

          • TheMightyDekuWarrior

I’ll be sure to do that, thanks!

But anyway, you can watch all the episodes easily on Youtube. They’re all on there.

          • StationaryBomb

“watashi” is a Japanese pronoun used to define people. “wa” is a Japanese particle used in-between words. I took Japanese online :3

          • TheHylianPixels

Well. Now I feel stupid. In my defense, I used Google Translate.

  • Nikki

My favorite ALBW characters are Irene(so I agree with your number one pick), Mother Maiamai, Ravio and Gulley. Of course, Zelda and Link are also in there. As well as Hilda and Impa.

  • drnedaj

Really you picked Irene as #1??? Thats a surprise. I would think Hilda would be on this list. Although I didnt like her name her character was interesting.

  • Ghirahim

Interesting choices. I agree with most of these, however, I did not find Irene as interesting as Hilda. I still think Irene was an interesting character, but Hilda was a very interesting antagonist, because she actually had good intentions for her people. Yuga is still my favorite though. He reminds me of myself.

  • Knots

Saves all of The Maiamais, turns out they are evil demension conquerors.

  • Knots

    I liked Sahrashala(?).

  • Guest

This is my opinion if you want me to explain my choices leave a reply.

    • TheHylianPixels

Either you’re a troll, or you have serious counting problems.

      • Ghirahim

        Or both.

The number list under the seven sages is the list of my favorites sages I had it working in the typing box, but turned out that way after I posted. I am not a troll. I am a legit zelda fan and I respect ever one on this site.

Thank you for clarifying that. I am sorry if I offended you.

            No problem.

I liked the adventurer guy who told you how to complete those little mini-dungeons. He was a cool guy because he didn’t mind if you took the rupees which he found first.

  • Kieroni

I love Ravio and Irene. Their personalities are amazing. ^^ I love Hilda at the (very, very) end too!

My favorite character is definitely Mother Maiamai (is that how you spell it?). Finding the lost Maimais was a pretty fun sidequest. Plus, instead of just getting the normal heart piece, YOU GET FREAKING WEAPON UPGRADES!

    • Ghirahim

I agree. The Maiamai quest was the most enjoyable find all 100 somethings quest in the series, and yes, you spelled Maiamai correctly; unlike Nintendo.

    Here’s my list:
7: Rosso; I liked Rosso because he was just pretty awesome. He was immediately willing to give Link some nice gloves with no required action in return. Plus I think he’s a half-goron.
6: Hilda; Hilda’s a pretty awesome Zelda counterpart, and I liked her role throughout the game. I only had 2 problems with her. Firstly, she wasn’t around often enough to leave much of an impact in the game, and, secondly, she could have been a (SPOILER) amazing final boss. The fact that there hasn’t been a real female final boss since Oracle of Ages is kind of sad, and as soon as I heard Yuga refer to “Her Grace” I became excited that there might be a hidden boss behind Yuga and Ganon. I didn’t know it would be Hilda, but once I found out in the game’s ending, I was super-excited to fight her. But then, of course, she had to turn to be betrayed by Yuga and then turn to Link’s side in the end. I wouldn’t at all have minded her becoming an ally of Link and Zelda’s again in the end, but I do wish I could have fought her first.
5: Bee Guy; I always love characters who are super-obsessed with one thing and give you a ton of money for it. TP’s Agitha, ST’s Bunnio, The Happy Mask Salesman, the Mailman, ST’s Ferrus, to WW’s Carlov, characters with obsessions who sometimes give Link big rewards are always fun.
4: Ravio is annoying, but he has a lot of items and a bizarre sense of personality. His bunny suit is an awesome nod to A Link to the Past and even Bunnio from Spirit Tracks. His true identity makes him all the more a great character and one of the more interesting acquaintances Link has met throughout his journeys.
3: Mother Maiamai: She upgrades your items, she’s an inter-dimensional Squid-beast, she eats things to make them more powerful, she has a full-fledged choir backing up her awesome cave song…what more could you ask of a minor character?
2: Irene; Irene’s the sage with the most personality. The fact that she talks every time Link hitches a ride on her broom can be mildly annoying, but doesn’t even come close to the problems of companions like Navi and Fi. Additionally, she’s always amusing and her numerous complaints about Link are pretty accurate. I always find myself slightly amused when she complains I could be walking, especially given my tendency to warp places, even if it’s just 2 screens away.
1: Cave Hinox; In an awesome nod to the original Legend of Zelda, a Hinox appears and gives Link a ton of money for no good reason. It’s a secret to everybody. But unlike the Moblins of the original game, this Hinox is likely bipolar. His desire to keep his location secret, likely because he is a deserter of Yuga’s forces, is almost touching, and Link’s exploitation of his situation and his kindness, depending on the personality of the player, is really amusing. Draining him of all his money and getting to hear him say, “GIVE ME BACK MAH RUPEES” is also really fun. And then, I tried to kill him and died because he is invincible. Anyways, all around, he was a great side character.

Hey, Eldritch, sound like ehhh, Skeldritch, the Ancient Demon, skel
refers to skeleton, his skull, and eldritch refers to something, not from this earth, something magical,
capbone, cap refers to his helmet, and bone to bones and his skull.

the bee man needs to visit Dr.Link.

  • Goldie

I mostly agree with this, although I would have picked thief girl instead of the bee guy. Also, when I first saw yuga, I thought he was a women, it’s the same as with sheik, he also looked like a girl. I also love the personality that yuga has. Yust like Ghirahim, he is evil, creepy and fabulous too!
