Zelda 3DS uses orchestrated Link to the Past soundtrack

JordanApril 18th, 2013 by Jordan

In one of the clearest demo videos we’ve seen today, German Nintendo fansite NiNTENDOMiNATiON has brought us an excellent look at the exclusive Zelda 3DS demo with a full thirteen minutes of footage. Not only does this new video show us a full dungeon’s worth of gameplay, but it also has a direct audio feed so we get to hear the music and other game sounds perfectly. The results sound beautiful. Jump inside to see the video!

As you can probably hear in the video, the music and sound effects are both very familiar. It seems that just as many of use suspected, this new game will also be featuring a fully re-orchestrated version of the music from A Link to the Past! Not only that, but the Rupee, Sword Beam, and floor-changing sound effects are also updated versions of the ones from the SNES classic.

Not sure you hear the similarity? Here’s a refresher; click here for the original Dungeon Theme and here for the original Boss Theme.

So how do you like the music in this new game? Are you happy to hear the blast-from-the-past that is A Link to the Past‘s music, or would you have preferred something more original? Let us know in the comments, and be sure to tell us any other interesting tidbits you may have picked up in this video!

this game is gonna be pretty awesome, can’t wait

  • HeroofTime123

I’m really glad to hear the music and see this game in action with the sounds and music but the sounds still sound too close to the originals. In other words, the sound effects seem really outdated and I would prefer they use new ones or take them from some of the new games because they just don’t fit with the updated music and visuals. I also have said this before but I really don’t like the voice because I just don’t think it fits this Link at all. They could have reused any other Link voice but they chose the one that doesn’t fit this style. I think it’s probably because they are treating this game like Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks but this game is entirely different with an entirely different Link and should be treated as such.

  • JuicieJ

Man. That boss theme sounds ridiculously epic orchestrated. o_0

I also love how it changes as Moldorm gets weaker. That’s awesome.

  • Mikau94

I love it! I’m also glad to see we won’t be using the touch controls; it was fun to try something new but it like holding the system with both hands and playing with buttons.

  • Majora

Zelda is renown for its soundtracks. I think that it is pretty cool that they are orchestrating it, but I hope that they do put in some original pieces to make it even more memorable.

Man that orchestrated soundtrack is going to be amazing. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the soundtrack. I hope there will be some new music and themes for the title.

  • GoldSkulltulaHunter

Is it my impression or this dungeon’s song sound a bit like the one from Skyview Temple in SS?

    • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.pappas Anthony Pappas

I thought so, too! But, then, it’s the same team, right? Probably the same orchestra….

  • Emmy Melton

11:47: Guy does Happy Dance, lol.

13 minutes 51 seconds of Zelda fangirl heaven… And then it’s over. THAT WAS AWESOME. I really do love the art style, that Link is so weirdly adorable. And it works. I also really like the music, too. I’m so excited!

    • Guy

      I didn’t do a happy dance…

      • Thing

Oh, you didn’t? I sure thought you did!

  • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.pappas Anthony Pappas

So I’ll be playing this with my headphones.

Those of you who aren’t too excited by this, who blessfully came later to the series, one Zelda fan to another: let us have this. Let us have this game, and be happy knowing in twenty years Nintendo could remake your Zelda.

    • Kablamogroup

It’s going to be the opposite for me, but for the same reason. My ear buds have crummy sound quality, so I’ll be playing without them as often as I can.

  • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.pappas Anthony Pappas

I like how the music subtly drops out when Link goes “Hyrulglyph” (credit to Audrey Drake).

  • Silver Arrowz

Dang it! Why can’t I play this demo?

  • Jonas

It wasn’t til about 1:39 that the sounds sunk in. Even the enemy death sound is similar!

  • Weeee

Is the North American version coming out before the Japanese one? …Isn’t it usually the other way around?

    • Nikokiri

Skyward Sword was released in Europe and NA before it came to Japan. :)

  • Ein

Did anyone else get disappointed by the fact that Moldorm was ridiculously easy this time around? You don’t have to restart if you get knocked off! And you don’t really get knocked off as easy…I know I’m gonna love this game but I hope it gets more challenging!

    • linkypete

Well if that’s the first boss in the game (it’s not a link to the past after all, it’s a sequel.),then shouldn’t it be easier for the player to just get used to the kind of fights in the game? The first boss in a game should always be the easiest so that the player can get a little more acquainted with the game. Also, I don’t think that nintendo wants people to rage over falling off the edge and having to restart the battle during a Demo. that would be bad for their image.

      • Cucco’s Revenge

Yeah, people raging over a boss in a demo would be pretty bad..

        • linkypete

for both game sales and people’s opinions…

          • Cucco’s Revenge

          • linkypete

    • Techyahndea

I thought the same thing. ALTtP was one of the harder zelda games, I hope they make this one difficult as well. I laughed when the guy ran off the platform during Moldorm and was thinking ‘You are going to have to start all over… Muahhahahha!”, but then he didn’t :(

  • zarx1554

Is that Link’s voice for WW and PH? I never would imagine ALTTP Link to have that voice

  • linkypete

That Boss fight music was AWESOME!!! can’t wait for holiday season.

    • Cucco’s Revenge

      ^ This!

  • Freez0

Would be awesome if we are able to register our copy on club Nintendo and get the soundtrack, like they did with ocarina of time 3DS.

  • Cucco’s Revenge

I think I’ve found a new favorite Zelda soundtrack. Sorry, ALttP, but Zelda 3DS’ soundtrack is far better.

This game is getting better and better with every new find.

  • Tehlul

Nintendo copped out and made Moldorm easier it seems.

    • Cucco’s Revenge

It’s a demo first boss, whaddya gonna expect? If the Molodorm was harder in the demo, probably put a bad image on Nintendo. And it seems like a first boss, and first bosses aren’t supposed to be that hard.

      • http://www.controlpaddesign.com/ TheMaverickk

Also Moldorm was always kind of easy. The only thing that made it more of a challenge is that it’s health reset every time you got knocked off the platform.

Also by this time most of us who were kicking Moldorms tail back in 1992 have more or less perfected the techniques to beat him. So he isn’t really easier, I think most of us are just better players.

was that the tower of hera?

    • HeraQueen

      I think it was, yes

  • CaptainSpaz

It looks like the Drawing effect is going to be like a Pegasus Boot item, one that doesn’t have to be equipped.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bjorn.fast Björn Fast

    It looks nice :)
Not SUPER OMG NICE but not bad naider
im most afraid that it will be to much like the old game :/

  • Hoff123

See it doesn’t have to sound boring just because it’s orchestrated. OK, yeah, I know Skyward Sword’s music was “atmospheric”, but it can still sound epic and have some kind of melody even if it’s orchestrated.

    • Hoff123

(“Damn, I will get downvoted for this…lol…”)

      • Cucco’s Revenge

        More like get upvoted. :P

    • http://www.controlpaddesign.com/ TheMaverickk

      Except that Skyward Sword had a lot of epic music….. the main theme “Ballad of Goddess” is probably one of my fave Zelda themes thus far. Then there was Ghirahim’s theme, Groose’ Theme, Fi’s Theme… all excellent. Then there’s music like like the Lanayru Mining Facility…. The Molderach battle theme…. Ghirahim’s Battle theme (although just modified more up tempo version of his theme). I could keep listing off examples. Also most of Skyward Swords dungeons and music had melodies. For example Skyview Temple;

      Most of Twilight Princess’ dungeon themes were ‘atmospheric’ or ‘ambient’…. I think the music of TP’s dungeons is a better example of atmospheric;

      So there really isn’t a melody in there, it’s just kind of rhythmic sounds. Then you get full out ambience like in Wind Waker when you are in a cave…. this theme;

As I am happy Nintendo is doing this, at the same time I’m disappointed because it looks and feels so uninspired.

  • Nikokiri

That’s great news! I was a little disappointed that OoT3D didn’t have any orchestrated soundtracks (except for the ending credits). This makes me ever more excited!

I think the STORY is going to be key at this point.
I’ve always kinda wanted to be able to re-explore a games Hyrule without having to replay it.
This game seems like as close as we’re going to get to that.
Love the Orchestrated music, now we need story details.

  • http://twitter.com/patrickSluss Patrick Slusser

I need to obtain this in all its glory. I will be pre-ordering this…

  • HeraQueen

I can not wait! I’ve been waiting for a sequel since I was a little girl!!!! Looks great!!!!

  • Tetrabrick

I have a feeling that when you finish the main story you’ll unlock an updated version of ALttP (maybe even the original SNES one for the sake of nostalgia) It would be perfect

  • somebody you don’t know

    I’m looking forward to this.

  • itsameluigi1290

Unless that’s just a placeholder. If there’s a new voice I’m sure I’ll like it, because unlike with Capcom with Mega Man X, Nintendo knows good VAs to hire :D

  • oozy the wolf

where is this cause i want to play it!

  • BlackRaven6695

Really hope they orchestrate “Turned into a rabbit!”.

  • http://www.triforcetalk9.blogspot.com/ Linkfan99

I can only imagine how cool that must look in 3D…

  • Zelda is the Bomb!!!

  • JeredenDonnar

I just hope that it is a new story, not just a rehash with a couple gimmicks.

  • Kablamogroup

I really enjoyed the way the sound effects were brought back. It really makes me feel a little nostalgic for ALttP. What I like about the music is that sure, it’s basically the same music as from ALttP, but also had enough differences in it to make it feel almost new. So, it’s nice that the music and sounds are basically the same from what many of us remember, but that they are also renewed, and changed slightly to keep them from feeling too recycled or old.

Sad he ignored the secret area with the rupees … Got me really curious. . ;)

  • LetsGoRetro

@Anthony Pappas- AMEN1Beautifully put! As an old school gamer, I put away video games from ages 18-28. Last year, I picked them up again and for the whole year, ivve been thinking “I wish I could recreate those memories of playing lttp and yoshis island with my friend as a kid. I’m in SHOCK they were both announced on the same day. With all of my gamer friends having moved out of the Boston area, and this being on ahandheld instead of a home console, it looks like ill be enjoying these alone this time, which is a shame, but its still exactly what I wanted. Younger players, let us have this. Your day wil come. We’ve followed this series since day one and have been waiting half of our lives for this. Nintendo, thank you.

  • Ripper

I really wish that they stuck with synthesized music. I am really starting to grow to hate orchestrated music with a passion. It’s no good. Well, I guess these aren’t old times anymore. Gone are the days of actually memorable and amazing synthesized music, replaced with boring forgettable orchestrated tracks. No excuses, every game that has used orchestrated music that I have played, had a soundtrack being extremely unmemorable and boring and it blended together. alttp is my favorite game, and I am glad its getting a sequel, I just wish it wasn’t orchestrated.

  • Dash

Orchestrated music sucks, flat out. There’s hardly any memorable soundtracks out there that were orchestrated. Skyward Sword is the biggest offender of this. What a pile of garbage. Same goes for the likes of Super Mario Galaxy. There’s no one out there who can honestly say that this new trend in orchestrated music has been putting out quality work. It’s just an excuse to not be creative. Horns? Check. Strings? Check. Boring arrangement? Check.

    • Anon

It’s the same music as it used to be, but with real versions of the instruments…
listen to some of ZREO’s Music (RIP ZREO)

  • Vink

Oooo, I wander if Dark World will be in this game, I love the theme, pum pum pa pa pum paaarp!

They shouldn’t be relying on nostalgia for a new game. I’ll probably enjoy this game, but I don’t like the heavy nostalgia theme. It makes the devs lazy because they have little incentive to make new things.

  • LinkofMasks

I think its cool that it has a reorchestrated version of the original soundtrack. It makes it really feel like both a sequal and a new game
