Monday Comic Corner – It’s Dangerous To Go Alone

DaveyApril 22nd, 2013 by Davey

“It’s dangerous to go alone, take this!” is one of the most famous text-only memes, stemming from the very first NPC in Zelda game, as we all know. And I don’t think most of us thought much of it. The old man gave us a sword and we could start our adventure. But what if the old man was wise? And if he could say more? What would he say? Hit the jump to find out what Zac Gorman of Magical Game Time thinks!

And now I will never be able to play The Legend of Zelda without considering this. It is just a game, after all. And the enemies in the game are really nothing but lines of code and human drawn animations. Killing something in a game has no direct consequences in real life.

But suppose we replaced the sword with something else that could be utilized every day? And perhaps the damage that could be wielded with this common item is certainly something to consider when using it. The pen is mightier than the sword, after all.

What did you think of the comic (and the fantastic fire and shadow animations?) Let us know in the comments!

that cut me deep.. deeper than any blade…

    • ZeldaFan4569

that was a very punny pun

      • Vincent Yobs

its not even a pun… or not meant to be…

        • ZeldaFan4569

if it’s not a pun…….what literary technique is it?

          • Ultima Link

its a quote I once heard by Zabuza from Naruto… you should watch it sometime… its a good anime.

  • Ordona

Zac Gorman’s Zelda comics always have a really sad a subtle beauty to them. They always make you think twice about things, particularly this, which is a meme more often than not. Not to mention I love the art and animations.

  • Sean Johnson

I love these comics. pretty much everything involved in them is amazing.

  • Kikwi

That is beautiful. And if you’re looking for a game with something else than a sword, try Okami. Your ‘weapon’ is a paintbrush, and used to create as often as to kill. Some say the game reminds them of Zelda TP.

… Or you can try to beat a game by using just the slingshot, haha :P

    • BlueBloodBoy98

i also happen to know another game where the weapon is a paintbrush… if you dont know where im going with this it’s Epic Mickey.

      • Link_The_Ultimate_Chronomancer

And Super Mario Sunshine of course.

        • Kevin

Have you played Sunshine? The villain uses a magic paintbrush for graffiti – Mario uses FLUDD, a water pump-like device.

          • Link_The_Ultimate_Chronomancer

Derp. I never said that Mario used a paintbrush, but I was just pointing out another video game where the weapon is a paintbrush….. And I don’t need to have played Sunshine to know that (though I have).

    • EzioCRossfire

Why didn’t they put this line in the original LoZ. :P

    • Twili Tetra

Actually, Okami has Glaives, which are basically swords.

    • thing

trying to beat the game with the slingshot (i tried this in OOT) is impossible. some bosses you cant just beat with it.

  • Mseevers95

One mistake people make when they draw this scene is they forget it’s wooden sword. Glad to see Zac Gorman remembered.

  • oozy the wolf

this guy just went from creepy to a nightmare.

  • Amber Evans

I see Zelda as a way to release my adventurous side. Seeing as I don’t go out much, Zelda is a way for me to revel in exploring and doing dangerous tasks. As well as fighting enemies and winning. :)

  • Aaron hill

this is not the usual type of comic it portrays some deep and interesting aspects and makes you think about things.

  • Alan Da Cruz Nascimento

    feels bad man

  • Eric Bott

Nice art, nice composition. The line about a weapon being a responsibility and a burden is true. However, I have to call BS on the line about it not affording safety. A weapon obviously doesn’t make you completely safe, but it does make you safer.

  • thelinkmaster001

i can’t help but notice link’s smile in the last panel

  • Link_The_Ultimate_Chronomancer

Panel 3 has a great drawing of Link. So much cute/innocence/wonder/awesome packed into that one expression.

  • TheFrostDragon

I love magical game time. It’s not always a funny comic, and it doesn’t have to be. Reading it just… Feels good.

  • Stephen Campbell

loved it. made me think, which is always a good thing

  • balloonofwar4

Really gives the wooden sword a lot more value than just the cheap, weak sword it is in-game. It is a tool of destruction, no matter how subtle.

  • ZeldaFan4569

I made a wooden sword from the first zelda last summer, and it looks surprisingly like the one in the comic

  • sterling

So I should go stabbing magical creatures with a ball point pen? ok im in!

  • Gabriel Gomez

  • Dr_Stein

I love this comic, I never really thought about it much, but it’s true.

  • TrueMasterSwordWielder

    Dude. That’s fuckin’ deep.

  • baileygirl99

    whoa. Deep stuff…

  • Shepy66

    That’s deep…

  • olde anonymous

news comes very quickly. Has anyone posted something about the reference to the Legend of Zelda in Little Inferno by Tomorrow Corporation yet?

  • npatoray24

poor old man, all alone in that cave and when he finally gets a visitor he burdens him with task that he can not even fathom

  • zarx1554

You actually don’t need the sword throught the game up until to the battle with Ganon. It is just highly reccommended. Anybody who really wants to play the game should get all of the swords though.

  • Red

This is the most pretentious comic I’ve ever seen.

  • starbomb son

it’s dangerous to go alone, take this! oh thanks old man that is really very nice,
i can always count on you for some friendly advice. tho i have never seen a sword quite the shape and size, Oh god! that’s not a sword it’s your dick in disguise.
Yes i can’t lie i have painted my shweeen, now grab your destiny, if you know what i mean!
