Far Cry 3, an open world action adventure sandbox game, has been largely praised for its extensive map editor. A YouTube user under the name SypherAP has recently used this tool to recreate a portion of the overworld of the Game Boy game Link’s Awakening.

Jump inside to see the video!

The video opens by showing what part of the world map has been recreated and proceeds with the creator roaming around to showcase key points of the map that represent buildings or areas from Link’s Awakening. The main area of the overworld created consists mainly of the town and a small chunk of the forest section. Other key elements of this area have also been created such as rock formations and paths that follow the level design of the Game Boy Color classic very closely.

So what do you think? Did the fan do a decent job reinterpreting Link’s Awakening in Far Cry 3′s map editor? Have you played Far Cry 3 yourself? Let us know in the comments below!

FIRST! I wanna get FarCry 3 now!

  • Martin

Very awesome idea, I’d love to see this done with a Borderlands Sand box editor if there is one, the style of borderlands would better reflect it I think. :)

Ow…that made my thumb hurt just from watching it =__= Not bad I guess, but it’s hard to see the resemblance to some areas right away. I wish they would have done a couple of more iconic areas of Koholint, but I haven’t played farcry 3 so I don’t know what it’s map editing capabilities are.

  • Clem

It would have made it a lot easier to recognize the areas if it had shown the corresponding game-boy versions at the same time like in the video’s thumbnail.

    • Guy

agreed. Its very difficult to recognize anything.

I’m sure the person who did this spent a lot of time working on it. But, it’s hard to see the parallel between this and the island from LA. Just has no Zelda feel to it whatsoever.

This isn’t YouTube. It’s Disqus, and there are no top comments. And you should try to stay on topic here.

So enjoy the amazing video above.

Oh. Well TECHNICALLY there are top comments, it’s just whoever gets the most votes up.

And, uh, I don’t really know what Far Cry is, so I can’t say much about it.

AGH Why do I always see “Far Cry” as “FART CRY?!!??”

    • Clockwerk Orange

      RAHHHHHHHHHHH*fartnoise*AAAHHHHHHHH. :l

  • Kravik

Now, just imagine if a fan of that sort, mastered a real 3D model creator! ..

    Relocating your thumb…..

(Lie down; try not to cry; cry a lot)

  • Vink

If this were ocarina of time/MM/WW/TP or SS map, it would be easier to recognize.

  • Vink

Should of done a bridseye view of the map, would’ve been easier to recognize.

he must have worked his butt off.

A link to the past still looks better. Its really hard to distinguish the landmarks when the graphics are so realistic and mundane.

I really wish they hadn’t skipped around so much! They should have made it one continuous video of them walkthing through their recreation. I recognized a few obvious landmarks, like Madam MeowMeow’s house or the well, but other than that I was very confused. The least they could have done was shown the area corresponding area on the map; I had absolutely no idea where they we when they were out in the field with no buildings around or anything.
