Curiosity Shop #112: Zelda Dungeon Mailbag

Axle the BeastFebruary 7th, 2013 by Axle the Beast

Hey guys! Got a new mailbag! It’s a bit on the longer side again, but… hopefully that’s okay! Got a very wide variety of questions this time, though there’s slightly extra focus on Majora’s Mask and Skyward Sword, discussing some of the series villains as well as tackling one particular age-old confusion for Majora’s Mask players. Even Hyrule Historia comes up once or twice! 14 questions in all. Enjoy! You can watch the video here or check out the embed after the jump.

Questions and timestamps:

(00:22) – Which Zelda game represents your childhood?
(01:10) – If you could add anything to Hyrule Historia, what would you add?
(02:06) – How do you think The Wind Waker HD will implement the Tingle Tuner if at all?
(03:13) – Should the Zelda staff listen more to the fans and their ideas when creating future games?
(04:33) – Why do Link, Ganondorf, and Zelda always get their Triforces instead of someone else?
(05:28) – Do you think Zelda will ever have a female villain?
(06:23) – Do you think the series would benefit from a game without Link as the main character?
(07:16) – Do you think we might see figurines more in the Zelda series?
(08:22) – What do you think is the most overused item in Ocarina of Time?
(08:29) – How does the banker in Majora’s Mask know you after you rewind?
(09:07) – How does the freezing Goron in Snowhead from Majora’s Mask know about Dodongo’s Cavern?
(09:36) – Are the Rito in The Wind Waker the Zora from Ocarina of Time?
(10:00) – Do you think Ghirahim is a cool villain or a complete psychopath?
(10:12) – Do you think it would be cool to see the remaining “Demon Lords” shown in Skyward Sword’s opening in future games?

Be sure to submit your name/username and questions to our contact page, or if that page doesn’t work then email them to [email protected] for next week’s mailbag! You can also use my Twitter or Facebook, or use the Mailbag Thread on the forums!

Can you guess the quote on the paper, the sound at the beginning, or any of the music? Include them with your question and you might guarantee it gets answered! How about your thoughts about the questions? Which Zelda game would you say represents your childhood? What would you have added to Hyrule Historia? Is there any benefit to having a Zelda game without Link as the protagonist? Tell me your thoughts on these and any other questions you want in the comments!

Fun fact: feathers are actually more closely related to scales than fur.

    • Guy

  • HiddenScrub

I loved the Link yell at the beginning

    • Guy

it wasn’t link i dont think, but i could be wrong u know…

      • Anonymous

I think it was WW Link. Whenever he falls, or gets shot by Tetra using a catapult while he’s in a barrel.

  • Lupine Hero

Are you kidding? I PREFER longer ones!
And I completely agree on number 13. Ghirahim being a psychopath is part of the reason he’s such a great villain. (I’m actually slightly scared of him…)

    • U Mad Bro?

      lol, that’s what she said.

  • Hero of Time

Nice Link scream at the beginning, Axle. I do agree on the overused item in OoT thing. You use it so darn much.. I have multiple theories on the banker, but I’m too lazy to say them right now. =P My theory on the Goron knowing about Dodongo’s cavern is that a lot of the characters you know from OoT that you see in Termina are the same characters, right? Maybe it’s a Goron from Hyrule that’s randomly in Termina. Kinda weird theory, but it’s plausible, seeing that you see a lot of OoT characters in MM.

  • rulerofyourface

I got another question in the mailbag! (I’m Bradley Kroehling)

  • rulerofyourface

You make a great point, I would have loved to see more information on the Dark Tribe.

  • Awesome

The quote is from the Goron Dancing right?
Sound is just child Link falling.

1.) Majora’s Mask actually. I played Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past first but Majora’s Mask was the first one I actually owned and beat.
2.) I haven’t got my Hyrule Historia yet so I’ll let you know then.
3.) Tingle Turner and the Gamepad would be a match made in heaven.
4.) Meh. Trying to make a game just for fans prevents the developers from being creative. Also there’s no way to appeal to all fans.
5.) Because it’s a video game and weird stuff happens.
6.) I personally want a game where you play as Zelda, but that’s just me.
7.) Gender of the villain doesn’t matter to me honestly.
8.) The figurines only showed up in two games and the figurines in Minish Cap were only there because they were there in Wind Waker. That being said, sure bring them back.
9.) Lol weird question. Ummm…Shield? it’s always out when you are Z-targeting
    10.) You have a stamp….a magic stamp.
    11.) Again magic?
    12.) Yes
    13.) Both as well
14.) I mean yeah it would be interesting to see a bunch of big bad guys working together.

  • Guy

Tnx for answering my question axle!

  • Link-of-Lylat

Yeah, aLttP would be my childhood zelda. And good point on the tingle tuner!

  • Rid The Dragon Master

“What do you think the most used item is.”

…really? you had to ask that to find out? sad…

    • Tommy

He asked about the most OVERused item.

  • names are for tombstones

The next zelda game should be a skyward swors sequel/ minish cap prequel and use both the backstories to Minish Cap and Spirit Tracks and combine them. Remember Malladus’s title is a Demon Lord. They could implement Volvagia’s backstry in this game as well. seems legit.

    • Fishman

And for the record, small fry, there is NO reason for Volvagia not being in Skyward Sword, the Earth Temple even had a dragon theme!

      • names are for tombstones

yes, but it didn’t happen. there is a gap in between ss and mc though on the timeline which i think nintendo is pretty content with. im not saying they won’t add a game to fix the hero is defeated bull crap. anyway the gap is still before OoT so this is Volvagia backstory 2nd chance.

    • Guy

Skyward Sword was supposed to be “The Prequel to end all prequels” if u get what im saying. It could be nice, but that is probably not what they will do.

  • Merv?

Ocarina of time was my child hood game I actually never played it when I was a kid my brothers always did. While my two older sisters where painting nails I was sneaking down stairs to watch
my 3 older brothers play OOT. It makes me smile just thinking about it… 8)

  • Noah

as for the question at 4:33, its most likely because just as ganon is the reincarnation of demise, link is the reincarnation of the hero, and zelda is the reincarnation of the goddess. since all three (or their ancestors) are linked to the triforce, that is why it is passed down to them.

  • chaoswanderer

Maybe they will link the 3DS to use as a tingle tuner over local play.

  • chu-chu slayer

Does anybody know what the last song and the one after the ghost shop theme are?

  • JeredenDonnar

Wind Waker was my coming-of-age game though the N64 held my first games, that still remain near and dear (and beaten) to my heart.
Thanks for answering my question about the Ritos and Zora, though it technically wasn’t MY question , if you know what I mean, regardless.
The most used non-sword item would be the bow.

    • Darunia

HAHA! He answered me question. I’m so happy. lol

  • Roth

Hyrule, Termina, both knowing Dodongo’s Cavern? Ura Zelda leftovers. Used to be one game.

    • Guy

k, u can sue me or whatever. I got money…

  • Guy

I don’t think “The Sword” it an item in OoT. There is “The Kokiri Sword,” “The Master Sword,” “The Giant’s Knife,” and “The Biggoron Sword.” Still funny though lol!

The dance hall in Oracle of Seasons.

    1. Oracles. I played them first at a young age.

    2. I don’t know if it has this, but info/teasers of upcoming games.

    3. I’d like it to. If the Gamepad isn’t the TT, then use a 3DS.

    4. Depends on the idea. It’s it great, yes! If it’s a nit-pick or small thing, maybe. If it’s a bad idea, no.

    5. Reincarnation rules. That, and they deserve it.

    6. Veran? Twinrova, Koume, Kotake?

    7. You haven’t seen/heard of the BS Zelda or the Tingle Games. Possibly, if done right. Maybe a MMO similar to World of Warcraft.

    8. Maybe. I hope so. But include enemy stats and weaknesses in the Figurine lore.

    10. He knows your mark, which wasn’t erased/fall off when you went back in time. I’m not sure how he keeps your money though. Maybe you actually undo all your movements, but the banker can’t undo transactions. Good idea Axle.

    11. Who said it was the same Dodongo Cavern? Or that the Forest is the only location with a Hyrule/Termina portal? Maybe Dodongo Cavern has it’s own secret portal.

    12. I thought that was confirmed in-game.

    13. An completely cool bipolar villain. I wish to see him again.

    14. I hope so.

Using a 3DS as the Tingle Tuner is a brilliant idea. It provides the same kind of exclusivity so that not everyone can do it, it encourages people to buy both systems, and it shows off the Wii U-3DS connective capabilities.

      • Anonymous

If we use the 3DS for the TT, then maybe, instead of only being able to pay with Rupees, we can pay with Play Coins.

  • Seth Taylor Moore

As for the last question, if we imagine the Twili to be the same as the Demons in Skyward Sword, then we could build a more interesting story. Almost all the Demons—including the remaining Demon Lords from the intro—were banished into the Twilight Realm except for Ghirahim, Demise, and Batreaux. Demise was imprisoned by Hylia, and Ghirahim hid himself so that he could bide his time. I also think this is when he bound his soul to Demise’s sword, to give his own power to Demise. Batreaux repented and was sent by Hylia to be the guardian of Skyloft. Perhaps it was even she who gave him wings, so he could better protect them.

Also I think Batreaux could possibly be one of the Demon Lords. The one closest to Demise on the right has horns like his, so it’s a possibility.

First Zelda was the original Legend of Zelda, and it was the one that captivated my imagination. I think that A Link to the Past is the Zelda game that really impressed me growing up mind you. They are both amazing titles.

As for the whole “listening to the fans thing” they definitely did that in full already.

Twilight Princess was that “fan-service” game. It was a mish mash of too many idea’s and too much of trying to make everyone happy while the developers still trying to put their unique ideas into it as well. At which point nothing was done with a high level of polish, good, entertaining… missing a lot of polish.

Not to mention that a good part of it’s identity is rooted in Ocarina of Time. Relying too much on that nostalgia.

I think listening a little is good, but full on trying to deliver everything doesn’t necessarily produce a better game (maybe more successful financially though).

  • Allredgoron

I kinda thought it would be interesting and cool if, instead of the route they took in Hyrule Historia, a Legend of Zelda field guide were made, where there is a bio for the races and some of the enemies and their game history.

  • lostdagame

The Rito thing was confirmed in Hyrule Historia.

Hey, I just thought of something. Remember how MM was originally called “Side Quest”? What if that had more meaning?

Lets consider three more facts. One, it used the same engine, and many similar enemies, as OoT. Two, according to non-used code, there were to be 3 doors in OoT, one each for Past, Present, and Future. Three, the age of Link is clearly between the two Links from OoT, not an exact copy of Child Link.

Is it possible that Majora’s Mask was originally planed to be the Present door, but then Nintendo altered the overworld, town, and a few other aspects when they realized that they couldn’t fit/use it in OoT? If parts of it and the dungeons were actually built during OoT, it would explain why it took so little development time a little more.

  • Ryan F. Hullstrunk

A Link to the Past is best Zelda Game ^.^

  • Ryan F. Hullstrunk

So is any one else curious as to why Fish people couldn’t live in a flooded world and would evolve into birds? Honestly I imagine that they would thrive as Zora so I don’t understand.

    • BlackRaven6695

The key thing to remember is that Nintendo are video game developers, not marine biologists. They wanted to try out a new race in the Zelda series while still keeping a connection to the older games.

One theory I personally like is that after Lord Jabu Jabu disappeared in Ocarina of Time (he’s nowhere to be seen in the adult sections of the game) the Zora turned to Valoo as there new deity and adapted to life in the air because of this.

  • BlackRaven6695

They could use the 3DS for the Tingle Tuner in Wind Waker HD.

  • Hanzilla

    1. The Wind Waker. That was the first one I played, and it’s still one of my favorites.

    2. Not sure. I haven’t read it yet.

    3. I like what the anonymous commenter below suggested about using the 3DS.

    4. They should certainly take the fans’ ideas into consideration, but many of the fans have conflicting ideas. It wouldn’t work to listen to all of them, and not all of the ideas fans come up with are good ideas.

    5. If I remember correctly, Impa was originally destined to received the Triforce of Power, Link was destined to receive the Triforce of Courage, and Zelda was destined to receive the Triforce of Wisdom. Because Ganondorf’s heart was unbalanced when he touched it in OoT and because he was focused mainly on the power the Triforce would give him, it split into three parts and he received the Triforce of Power instead of Impa. Link and Zelda, however, are still destined to receive the other two Triforce pieces and this won’t change unless someone else with an unbalanced heart touches the complete Triforce and is focused mainly on the courage or wisdom elements of it.

    6. I think The Wolfess established well that Majora is actually female.

    7. Perhaps. But I’d like them to keep Link. There’s already a lot of variation they can and have done with him even though he’s essentially the same character in each game.

    8. I never did much with the figurines. So I can’t give a fair opinion on them.

    9. Just to be original, I’ll say the Green Tunic.

    10. Because of the stamp he puts on you. I know, it still doesn’t make complete sense. It’s what I would call a hand wave.

    11. I’m gonna guess that there’s another Dodongo Cavern in Termina.

    12. Yes. Weird but true.

    13. Definitely both. Like the the Joker but with less restraint.

    14. Yeah, I think that’s a cool idea!

  • linkmasta427

windwaker links scream (please if anyone dildnt know this then they dont know zelda xD)
my question would be: lots of people look for love intrests in zelda games which would be your perfered legend of zelda love intrest of any game eather fanmade or sort of hinted at anywere in the story or game itself?

  • Flimsii

    1. Wind waker. My first one, Ioved the open sea

    2. more info on plotholes, like link finding navi after mm

    3.Would be awesome!!

    4. Yes, but only being dependent on your fans is not a good idea

    5.Because of demise’s curse

    6. There has been, twinrova, veran. another one would be awesome though.

    7. NO

    8. If you mean like the nintendo gallery, I liked that sidequest. not just a 1 hour one but having to photograph EVERY npc and monster is so cool!

    9. The ocarina :D

    10. he doesn’t remember you, he stamps you.

    11. Maybe he also fell through the portal to termina!

    12. They are. they evolved because the gods didn’t want people swimming in the seas.

13.Very cool. Him being like the Fi of Demise (he is the dark master sword and fi is the master sword) makes him cool, and i like the jokery feeling of him.

    14. Would be cool, but i don’t think nintendo would consider it.

  • Jo Five

I’ve never really loved the Figurine concepts in Minish Cap and Wind Waker. But on the same lines, I find that filling the logbook in the Metroid Prime games was always a hefty chunk of fun. I always 100% scan in Metroid because I like to learn about the lore and the creatures beyond just “they’re all dead” and “shoot this” repsectively.
Majora’s Mask has that underground hole with the two Dodongos where you get the Heart Piece. Not as impressive, but that’s technically a “Dodongo’s Cavern”, hehehe.

  • Jacob Tasiemski

I have a question for the next mailbag! would there ever be a game in the future where Link encounters his descendants or knows about his descendants in any way?
