Zelda Fanart Spotlight – It Looks So Sad…

KnowleeJanuary 26th, 2013 by Knowlee

Today’s Zelda Fanart Spotlight is on deviantART artist ShadowScarKnight‘s Majora’s Mask fanart, “It Looks So Sad…“. This fanart shows Link as a Deku at the beginning of the game shortly after he was cursed by the Skull Kid. He comes across this sad looking tree while on his journey to Clock Town. Tatl comments on how it looks like it could almost start crying at any moment due to the how sad the expression looks on its face. The two never figure out what or who the tree is though. The only hint they hear of who this might be comes from the Deku Butler who mentions that Link’s Deku form reminds him of his son and that he left on a journey and has yet to return.

And its more than likely that this journey will be one that he will never return from…

As I’m pretty sure with most people I never really thought too much of who this tree was when I first played through the game. I always did find myself wondering who it was though and it wasn’t until after I obtained the Mask of Smells and saw the cutscene at the end of the game that shows the Deku Butler crying in front of it that it finally clicked for me who it was. I felt bad for the guy. Here he was waiting for his son to come home only to find that he never was… I’m sad now.

The artist has other artworks located in their gallery. Please go take a look and let them know what you thought of this piece. Also please let us know in the comments section below!

Stay tuned for the next Fanart Spotlight! Until then!

        …and then fails miserably. :(

  • pjsmoulder

The implication of the Deku mask being that like the Goron and Zora masks, where someone had to die in order to create those masks – for their essence to be trapped within it – the Deku was killed by the Skull kid when he turned you into your Deku Scrub form. It isn’t quite consistent with the creation of the other masks, but I have the feeling I read this theory somewhere before.

Yeah this is what I always thought too.

    *Tries not to feel sad*

    *Fails miserably*

    *Bursts into tears*

That’s some good art right there.

  • The Hylian Monolith

I’m currently very sad due to a rather emotional shoutbox convo. So this… this doesn’t seem to hold any emotion whatsoever to me right now.

All I can see is that it’s too bright for an MM pic, and that Deku Link’s position is unrealistic.

Thumbs me down. Make me sadder. go on.

  • JeredenDonnar

one of those unknowing sacrifices made for the good of the hero. Or rather, made by another who unwittingly aided the hero. Dos it make up for it that he got to “finish his journey” as link as oppossed to himself? maybe his journey was to find out where that obviously southern-swamp-connected tunnel led, to go from Termina into Hyrule, and that was against the rules. When skull kid found him, he sucked his life out of him to keep the entrance secret? Then unleashed that life force onto Link in a twisted use of magic. Either way, did he really die? His body was merged with Link’s soul/spirit/etc. , so that would imply his sprirt died? but his body lived on, if a little mutated. So sad….and completely unresolved, too. You can’t play the song of healing for the butler or the tree.

    • Ordona

It does seem a bit ambiguous. The other transformation masks were created after Link played the song of healing and “healed” the tormented souls of Darmani and Mikau respectively. It would make sense then that the spirit of the Deku Butler’s son was also healed in this sense, but the tree seems to imply the opposite, after Majora kills him to curse Link. I like to think that the Deku’s spirit is calmed when Link first learns the song of healing.

    Majora’s Mask Abridged.

  • Skull Kid

Very nice artwork, sums up the scene well. Imagine if link knew that he was the butlers son, and felt unbelievably guilty because if he tried to put up a fight against skull kid, this wouldn’t of happened. Also, is it just me,or does deku link always look sad?

  • Nerion

Am I the only one who thinks of AdamWestsLapDog’s Majora’s Mask Abridged series when I read the title?

  • firecrb

I feel guilty that my icon is majora.

  • Emma Mix

Very nice. It’s simple and without too much detail or distractions in the background. It really is a sad story… When you think about it, we all know that Link’s Deku form was the spirit of that Deku tree because whenever he gets a mask it’s from someone dying, same with the Zora and Goron masks. Since the spirit for the Deku form/mask had to come from somewhere… I mean yeah this “theory” is accepted as common knowledge nowadays, but it really is sad…

  • CrimsonLoftwing

    1. Lie down.
    2. Try not to cry.
    3. Cry a lot

(I know, overused joke is overused, This is just that sad.)

  • pizzaman

Thinking a lot about Majora’s Mask just brings out all the sorrow and depression inside of me. But in a good way…kinda. it’s weird.

  • npatoray24

thta was a really sad thing once youy realized who the tree was…. *tear

I remember a while back there was a picture similar to this, very sad.

  • ThePurpleKnightmare

Lol title stolen from adamwestslapdog’s Majoras Mask abridged.

  • http://twitter.com/mikejcsauer Mike Sauer

My question is how does the deku Butler get underneath the clock tower? That area he was in is before that twisty portal room.

  • guest

All the transformation masks were dead people. You watch the zora die when you take his soul and get his mask. You get the idea about the deku and it’s creepy then, but the zora mask explicitly shows you that they died. You actually take his place in the band afterward too, and his wife/girlfriend ends up laying his kid/egg afterward as well. I don’t remember how the goron dies though.

    • Thrice (╥﹏╥)

The Goron was already dead, so the only one who *might* have actually been killed by Majora was the Deku sprout since he only “Went missing.” and probably just happened to be in the middle of the Skull kids path at the wrong time.

  • baileygirl99

    *sniff* that part was sad

  • Jacob Tasiemski

That is so sad. I felt like I would start crying a little . . .

I’m sorry, but I have a problem with this picture…. with the perspective we have, the dead scrub is on the left side of the platform. but in the game, the scrub is on the RIGHT side… great art, just the wrong perspective.
