Monday Comic Corner – Recorder

DaveyJanuary 21st, 2013 by Davey

For this week’s Comic Corner we have a rather old comic from the Brawl in the Family series. In fact, this happens to be the very first Brawl in the Family that features Link!

It should be obvious from the title, “Recorder” that this comic was inspired by the original The Legend of Zelda, but unless you’ve been reading Brawl in the Family for a long time, you may not know what comes in the later panels.

All we know is the recorder in The Legend of Zelda summons a transporting tornado. Do you think you can guess what happens to Link? Or if you’ve read this comic before, can you remember?

Hit the jump to see the full comic!

Bill Watterson, the author of Calvin and Hobbes, once remarked that sometimes in a comic words can save bad artwork, and good artwork can save bad wording (or lack thereof). In this case, the latter is definitely true, and the last panel I find absolutely hilarious. I think Link’s eyes and mouth really convey the hysterical fit Link found himself in.

As I touched on in my first Monday Comic Corner, I think comics more than anything allow the community to explore ideas and poke fun at some of the miscellaneous things we take for granted in the franchise, or video games in general. I mean, it doesn’t really make much sense at all to have a tornado, which is summoned by a recorder, transport a living being around the land. I never second guessed this idea before, though, and I don’t think many of you have either.

There isn’t much more to say about this comic, and there were no notes by the author, but if you’re interested you can browse some of the other Brawl in the Family comics staring with this one here.

What other game mechanics do we take for granted in the Zelda series, or other video games even? Tell us in the comments!

The recorder doesn’t transport Link via tornado… In any game. That’s Super Mario Bros. 3.
In LoZ, it opened a dungeon by clearing a lake. In AoL, it moved a giant monster out of the way. In ALttP(where it was an ocarina/flute), he’s transported via bird. In OoT(again, an ocarina), he’s transported by… fairy dust…? In MM(ocarina), he kind of is, but not really. A tornado doesn’t come flying in from far away, in any case. In TMC(an ocarina), it’s a bird again. Did I miss anything?

Sorry to sound rude, but I saw something incorrect. Like, really incorrect. Not just kind of incorrect. Totally incorrect. Again, sorry…

Sounds like you need to play the original Zelda again, because the recorder DOES transport you between dungeons. Once you get the recorder, use it in the overworld.

I have played it, but I haven’t tried everything with everything, I guess. :P

In The Legend of Zelda the Recorder served three purposes. On the first quest, playing revealed the seventh dungeon, A Digdogger will shrink to a much smaller enemy, and it would also transport Link to the entrance of a dungeon you’ve already defeated.

In this warping functionality, a tornado is summoned that sweeps from the left of the screen over Link carrying him away. The player can actually move out of the way of the tornado before it reaches Link, and the warp will not occur.

Nintendo later employed this mechanic in Super Mario Bros. 3, as you mentioned, but The Legend of Zelda was first.

LOL, Link should have run when he had the chance.

  • Cmaster

I remember that. I had no idea what happened when I played the instrument and then when I did a big tornado came after me, it wasn’t until way later that I found out that it warped you to the nearest explored temple. Oh Nintendo…

  • Calanekeeps

Lol! It’s funny to see this right now, because I just beat Zelda 1 two days ago. I never knew how much fun the first game in this great series was. Now, for Zelda 2…

“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of heroes? Only the shadow knows!”

The original NES Zelda games are always excellent choices to play. I still have my original copy of Zelda II from when I was a kid and I still occasionally play it. Have fun and best of luck!
