Hand Drawn Link’s Awakening Intro

DaveyJanuary 29th, 2013 by Davey

The intro to Link’s Awakening and Link’s Awakening DX is one that many of us are probably familiar with, as it sets the scene for the adventure on Koholint Island. Though we find out the story was all a dream, before playing through the game, the intro is very real. Or at least as real as a Gameboy could show. Our friends over at ChrisCrossMedia have applied some serious drawing skills to animate this intro! Hit the jump to see the video along with a comparison!

The first two videos are Link’s Awakening and Link’s Awakening DX hand drawn. The only difference is the Link’s Awakening video is desaturated, as the original release was in greyscale. Link’s Awakening DX, however, is in glorious color.

Before you go look up, whether on your own copy or on YouTube the actual intro, Chris has provided us a comparison video for both editions of the animation.

The animation saves the feeling of the actual intro, which is key. And while maintaining the fidelity to the source, also brings Link’s Awakening to the present day. So good the hand drawn remake is, in fact, that I think other game intro remakes would be very welcome. And that’s exactly what Chris is asking his fans. We’ll also be able to see which intro is better, depending on which video gets the most views.

Additionally, the amazing music was also brought into modern times by YouTuber skotein who, as you might already know, is the composer for the Kanto Symphony.

What did you think of the remakes? Tell us in the comments!

Pssst…you accidentally put the DX intro in twice, and left out the black and white intro. :) The comparison vids are right, though!

    Marin looked…wierd when she walked.

    • gamekolby

      noooooooo

    • Vink

For a sick minded person like me I’d say she was tugging her D!#$, For normal minded people, it’s look like she’s walking and trying to keep dress up from getting dirty from the sand.

      • zombie_eat_flesh

        The normal mind sounds better.

Wow so amazing he has talent

  • gamekolby

    DX is awesome

And this is why Link’s Awakening should be remade.

Seriously. I’m not the only who thinks this, am I? It’s my favorite handheld Zelda. It’d look so amazing with updated graphics.

    • phoenix wright

Yeah, that’d be awesome and you could change between old/new graphics or change between BnW/colour while playing.

The old and new graphics deal is something that has pretty much never been done, and for good reason… it’s really not as easy as you might think to program a feature into the game that allows the players to completely alter the graphics at will. It’d require the game to re-load a wholly different graphical set.

        • Error

It’s been done. On ‘The Secret of Monkey Island’ Special Edition and its sequel you can toggle back and forth. At least on the PS3 version. It’s a VERY nice touch.

Is that right? Welp, hadn’t heard about that. Still a difficult thing to do, but I suppose if they can pull it off now it’d be interesting to see that used in Zelda.

        • Vink

It’s been done on Halo Anniversary combat evolved and all it requires you to do is press pause and you can change between xbox visuals to 360 visuals.

I know it’s not easy to do as it would take a while to make the new art style, whereas programming the switch would be easy, also, the GB style is already there so you’d just have to port it over to the console (3DS or Wii U).

    • spidertiger 7

yes it would be amazing with graphics like skyward sword i think that would look amazing

    • Terry Generet

      A remake would ruin it.

      • Guy

        Why?

        • Terry Generet

A lot of people have certain feelings when playing the game, which would probably be lost in a remake.

          • phoenix wright

I see you what you mean, some people don’t like the idea of the Wind Waker HD because it’s lost it’s Toon look which had a charm to it that’s why I’d recommend programming a switch to allow players to switch between GB style and new art style.

          • Terry Generet

It’s not only the graphics of the GB. It’s something else.

    • Rob

I like the idea of a remake, but it would take a very long time. I would be willing to wait though.

Honestly, They’d ALL look amazing with updated graphics.

….The CD-i games are questionable though.

  • Mow123

Marin is walking in place when the camera pans… still pretty cool though.

  • Vink

IS this really hand drawn on paper than animated using a stop-motion animation camera? Because this is fricken awesome!!!!

  • Michael Medina

Hey are ya’ll who post editorials and such on the front page moderators?

    • http://www.facebook.com/jordan.dipalma Jordan DiPalma

What do you mean? There’re a lot of folks on Zelda Dungeon’s staff who each have different jobs. We have News Reporters like Davey and myself who handle most of the news that comes through here such as this post, and then there’s a whole separate group of Article Writers led by Axle who write the articles and editorials you see to the right of the page.
The moderators who take care of site management and upkeep usually aren’t involved in that, they’re mostly behind-the-scenes work. Except Mases, but he’s supreme ruler of everything here so he gets into everything.
