GenGAME: Which Zelda Game Looks Best in HD?

JohnJanuary 23rd, 2013 by John

Games do not need HD graphics to look good. A statement sometimes resented in the gaming community, but games such as The Wind Waker and Skyward Sword have shown gamers that a game can indeed look beautiful without the need for HD graphics. That being said however, it is still undeniable that HD graphics do improve upon the look of games substantially and eliminates the slight out-of-focus look associated with standard-resolution graphics, which are now often considered sub-standard. Our sister site, GenGAME has posed an interesting question in terms of how HD graphics would affect the look of Zelda; to be more precise, out of the three most recent home-console Zelda games, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, which looks the best when converted into HD? Hit the jump to find out more!

Below are three videos which show all three games in HD. The videos pertaining The Wind Waker and Skyward Sword also showcase the games in standard resolution to provide a more accurate comparison between the two, while the Twilight Princess video merely shows the game in full HD throughout. It is advised in the first two videos that you switch to 1080p and full-screen mode when watching the videos to gain a full view of just what the Dolphin Emulator used in the videos can do. See all three videos below and judge for yourself which looks the best!

There is no denying that all of them look breathtaking, but in my opinion the Twilight Princess upgrade had the most profound effect on the visuals of the game. Perhaps it’s the fact that the game’s realistic graphics simply lends itself naturally well to HD graphics but seeing the overworld in HD looks phenomenal. The same goes for The Wind Waker upgrade, as the cel-shaded graphics really shine with the vibrant colors and the clean lines truly refining the graphics to remind us why we fell in love with the game’s graphics in the first place. Skyward Sword does look excellent in HD but I couldn’t help notice sometimes that some of the backgrounds used in the game which were blurred on purpose to save on memory space and to add to the Impressionist art style of the game look a bit out of place when placed behind the sharp goings-on in the foreground. However, this is just a minor complaint as the majority of the rest of the game look fantastic, with the Skyview Temple in particular shining with its trademark iridescent beauty.

You can vote in the poll on GenGAME here. Twilight Princess is currently leading the way with 59% of the overall votes, with The Wind Waker currently last with only 17% of the total votes. But which one do you think looks best in HD? Cast your vote in the poll then tell us in the comments below!

I love all of them ! They all look breath taking in HD.
Improvement-wise, I’d rank Twilight Princess first two, followed by the Wind Waker then Skyward Sword.

  • Luis Alvarez

Twilight princess looks the best in HD

  • GoMikeD

WInd Waker HD just confirmed for this fall for Wii U!!!! Hell yeah!!

  • Baljeet

wind waker is coming in HD this autumn remake for the Wii U

  • Ake Sha

AAAAAH !! WindWaker is comiiiiing on the Wii U !!!! *explodes*

  • Someone

WOW Twilight Princess more color in HD!

  • JMan

Skyward Sword looks best in HD you can CLEARLY see the difference even more than in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

    • Skyward Schlong

I agree. Too, since I’ve been playing Skyward Sword on my HDTV with the Wii U’s HDMI hookup, I’ve finally seen the game’s colors are their sharpest and OMG brightest, and I tell you this demo YouTube video doesn’t do the vibrancy of that game justice.

Improvement and best can be two different things. While the other games looked much better when compared to their originals, I’d say TP looked like the best HD Zelda of the options.

  • Amber

I agree with you, TP def looks the best

  • Red-tuniclink

Wind waker, seriously the wii U pics of wind waker are outstanding.

  • OwnerofTriforce

I’ve always loved the graphics for Twilight Princess, and that was just stunning!

  • Zelda25

I put Twilight Princess in my Wii U and I was so excited when it came out the same results in the video above. I don’t even have a tv with HD and I got the same results. So awesome!

  • Adventurer of Hyrule

Skyward Sword looks the best imo. And the blurred backgrounds are intentional, the more you step away the colors blend and make the beautiful watercolor effect. Wind Waker is also glorious in HD.

Twilight Princess is the least impressive visually, with the bleak direction that feels somewhat bland by comparison.

  • HeroofTime123

It’s funny how on the poll, the majority is for Twilight Princess and Wind waker is last and Nintendo is just like “Wind Waker HD for Wii U” I personally think they made the right choice. (no sarcasm just to be clear)

    • Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule

Well, TP and SS are just too recent to remake. And they’re still both easy to get a copy of and playable on the current console. It wouldn’t make sense to remake either of those.

  • Root Cmd

All of them… the three games are pieces of art, I can’t choose one.
That’s why I still play those games in dolphin and I don’t mind to repeat them over and over again.

  • Zora Twilight

I have a man next to me on the verge of tears because Twilight Princess is so beautiful XD

  • lulles

Funny you posting this right before TWW gets a remake announced for the Wii U, haha. Which, by the way, look MUCH better than what we saw in this video. I think that if they remade SS and TP for the Wii U, it wouldn’t just be HD graphics – it would look better overall.

  • RiftX9

    1.Skyward Sword ,
    2.Wind Waker,
    3.Twilight Princess.

My reasoning? Textures. As much as I do think Twilight Princess looks beautiful, it’s textures in 1080p just don’t match up. Now if they were to do a remake of it, Twilight Princess might be at the top. But since we’re just running off the old textures, it’s at the bottom. Oh and Wind Waker HD remake. My body is ready.

  • Steele

i want legit armor in future zelda games, (preferably one that doesnt molest your walet

  • zdog

Hahaha, how unbelievably ironic that they announce WW HD the VERY SAME DAY!

  • Ordona

All three games look absolutely stunning in HD. WW looks so perfect it makes me fangirl a bit. As much as I’m excited about the HD remake I thought this looked better…but I don’t want to speak too soon, it’s early days. TP emphasised some sharp edges in the background but the detail in the character models just made me fall in love again.
I don’t have a WiiU but I’m playing Skyward Sword on my Wii right now using a Wii2HDMI adaptor. I’m not so good on the technical how-it-works side but the picture looks amazing, and the colours are beautiful.

To be honest I don’t think there was a “best” out of the three. They all looked great and I think with the size of TVs people use now it’s the kind of quality we need from the console games.

  • asirusas

they tried with realistic graphics with twiligth princess which i absolutely loved and i need to see that one in beautiful HD to make the realistic zelda universe become perfect.

  • Cranbery

both skyward sword and twilight princess look really good. i have never played wind waker yet (although i really wsant to) so i cant see a difference

  • Ethan Goh

Trying to emulate any of these games on my PC in 1080p is like asking to start a fire from the computer.
