Wii Games Including Twilight Princess Upscale on Wii U

TimothyDecember 11th, 2012 by Timothy

One of the first features Wii owners hoped for when its successor, Wii U, became known to the public was the thought about Wii games upscaling to HD because of Wii U’s support toward the higher resolution capability. Unfortunately, the ability to convert Wii games to full HD is unsupported yet we do know that certain titles such as an awesome Zelda game in Twilight Princess showcases an improved picture display when played via Wii U. It’s not a vast improvement but a noticeable one all the same!

You can read some more details after the jump!

Wii U has been confirmed to upscale Wii games, not re-render them. This means the picture of the game you’re playing will only be adjusted according to what the TV thinks is the best option available and happens to be only supported by HD TVs. On a similar note, Wii games may only be upscaled from 480p to 576i by the use of an HDMI cable so unless you possess an HD TV no difference in the quality of the picture will occur.

Putting my Wii copy of Twilight Princess into my brand new Wii U revealed an improvement regarding the display of the picture quality on my HD TV. A lesser showing of pixels seemed to occur and the picture quality happened to be a bit smoother which encourages me to play Wii games on my Wii U.

Have you noticed a difference playing Wii games via your Wii U console? Is there a noticeable difference in the picture quality of Wii games played on Wii U? Do you like playing Wii games on Wii U?

add HD textures and i will be happy :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/kory.pelletier Kory Pelletier

So you want them to release every Wii game with updated textures? Have fun with that.

      • Cure

If enough people were willing to re-buy them for it to be viable I don’t see why not other than the fact that it’s time they could spend making brand new games instead.
Personally I’d just play them on Dolphin if I was that bothered about the SD.

    • http://twitter.com/EnergyVII Sam

Also i wonder if it runs at 60 FPS not 30..? anyone know?

  • +Skyward Sword+

    Wow, that’s so cool! I wish I had a wii u. :(
    Hope I get for christmas!

    • +Skyward Sword+

Opps, I mean Hope I get it for christmas… I already have and have beaten twilight Princess.

      • Midnafan

me too! ‘cept it took me 3 years…. :'(

        • marill

Wow, it took you 3 years to beat Twilight Princess? I played through it twice already just this year. First on the Wii, then on the Gamecube.

          • mr.x

beat it in a month and i did every side quest

          • Tehlul

…..I took me nine months to get out of the Deku Tree in OOT when I played it as a kid.

          • Timothy

Oh the nostalgia being a youngling wondering how to get through the old Deku tree, hopelessly wondering around without a sense of direction XD

          • LadyRevan

I beat the Deku tree, like, a million times everyday when I was three.
I would restart the game over and over to play it again. I dunno why I loved it so much. Sometimes, though, I just fought Gohma over and over.
But, that is nothing compared to the kids who beat Link to The Past when they were really young.

          • itsameluigi1290

Took me that long to find out what to do to get into the woodfall temple.

          • Midnafan

Well, here’s what happened: I beat Arbiter’s Grounds, but a friend told me I would need a lot more life than I had for the next dungeon, so I started over, using the ZD guide to get everything. And that was just it. After that I kept coming back to it and either forgetting where I was or getting bored, so I kept starting over. I started over so many times I completely memorized the ZD guide up until Arbiter’s Grounds. Plus in the mean time I had already looked up how the game ended, so I had no real motivation to finish it. Combine that with the facts that I suck at games and can only play 1-2 hours a week, 3 years is pretty reasonable. (took the same amount for Pokemon Platinum, and SS took me 6 months) I finally finished it this last year though, with 98% completion (i don’t find the last poe or the last floor of the Cave of Ordeals really worth it)

    • Midnafan

      me too!

    • http://www.zeldadungeon.net/ DA LAWLZ >:3

me too! cant waiitt!!! gonna be so awesome!!

    • Mseevers95

I have one but I am not allowed to even open the box until Christmas.

It’s not just a Christmas gift it’s also my Birthday and Graduation gift too.

      • itsameluigi1290

        Have fun in college!

  • Antepe

While it is neat, it is not available on PAL games (and/or consoles).

    • http://lulles.deviantart.com/ lulles

What do you mean? That doesn’t make sense.

      • frgovo

It is the Nintendo of Europe (NoE) that doesn’t make sense!
European WiiUs seem to have this upscaling feature locked. I had already decided I wouldn’t buy it anytime soon either, but it will be sitting peacefully on the shelf until they don’t fix this, the censorship system (currently restricted under the German law, which only shows “adult-rated” games [here 18+] on e-shop between 11pm and 2am), and anything else I might not know.

        • http://lulles.deviantart.com/ lulles

          Oh, that sucks :/

    • Timothy

If you read the source, Cubed3 has confirmed upscaling works for PAL games too. I live in Australia and it definitely worked for me :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/jimmyrhall Jimmy Hall

Have not tried, but I will starting with Skyward Sword and then Twilight Princess.

  • Midnafan

I want a Wii U… :'( but i do have a brand new 3D HD TV! :D so it’s gonna be great when i get the wii u (the TV itself already adds a minimal amount of 3D to anything we’ve watched on it, even without a 3D DVD player, and it still makes a huge difference) i bet SS fans get a huge kick out of that! i just wish the 3DS didn’t have to be the opposite. you put DS games in there, and the graphics are as crappy as can be. and that is why i still love my DSiXL, no matter how ridiculously huge it is. :P

  • Duh?

Uh, you are using HDMI instead of component cables – of COURSE its going to look better. There is no “upscaling” or anything, its simply HDMI has much better quality that component cables, so yes, its going to look sharper and crisper on an HDTV as opposed to the older component cables.

    • hardatoenail

You do realize that the only picture advantage HDMI has over component is the ability to display 1080p, right? Component can go up to 1080i no problem. A 720p movie would look the same using an HDMI cord or a component cord from a blu-ray player.

    • HylianGirl

European WiiUs don’t upscale the Wii games (I don’t know why). If it were just the cable that wouldn’t be the case.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001759639093 Kristin Laflin

I know for Skyward Sword, the upscaling doesn’t help much. But I can deal with it.

    • hardatoenail

The art style of that game already looked great in 480p IMO. I had no complaints at all.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002483515593 Kjetil Berthling

I played most of it on a 55 inch full hd tv, close to the tv. It got very pixelated, but it was definatelly playable.

  • Midna’s Sister

Lovely, but… Nintendo is milking it. I don’t want a Wii U; my Wii is just fine.

    • http://lulles.deviantart.com/ lulles

In what way are they milking it, exactly? You fail to see all the new games the Wii U has and will have that obviously won’t run on the Wii.

    • hardatoenail

LOL it’s progress…. Finally. This console generation has been way too long. Glad Nintendo got the next gen started. Wish the cost of new console releases wasn’t so high though.

    • Cure

It’s just fine; until they start bringing out Wii U AAA titles like Zelda and Metroid.

Then I’ll have to go out and get one.

      • Mseevers95

You’re going to be waiting for at least 2 years for a new Zelda game and probably longer for a Metroid title.

Nintendo Land has a mini game for BOTH.

        • Thunderlite421

There is an advantage in waiting, however. The console software is slightly improved via updates. And the prices are usually lower than the launch costs by then.

          • HylianGirl

I agree with Thunderlife421, I never buy consoles on lauch, I wait for the price to drop, and I don’t see a need to hurry and get it asap. Let the programers get time to learn how to make the best use of the hardware

          • GHIRAHIM

Well, yes, if you wait there will be a price drop (eventually, but definitely not as soon as the 3DS) And everyone gets the software updates, unless your system isn’t hooked up to the internet

    • Nintendo4Ever

so how was your gamecube for the past 5 years? They arent making wii games anymore so you either have to get wii u or not continue to buy nintendo products

      • http://www.zeldadungeon.net/ DA LAWLZ >:3

its been great actually! had it for about 8 and its running like new! thank you for asking!

      • HylianGirl

Hey, I still play my gamecube. And I’d still play my SNES if I still had it. I like to replay older games as well as buy retro games that I didn’t get the chance to buy ondce it came out. If you have the money to buy all the games you want for your current gen console, I’m glad for you, but that doesn’t work for everyone, I can’t afford anything like that.

        • Nintendo4Ever

I still play my old consoles too and I wasnt implying that they should buy it if they cant afford it. But saying that you just arent going to buy the wii u EVER isnt just a personal preference for the wii. its a commitment not to buy any new nintendo games for the next 5 to 7 years. That’s kind of odd for some one on a legend of zelda website.

          • Midna’s Sister

Wow. I didn’t say I would never ever get another Nintendo game. You people are SERIOUSLY attached to a large, mixed variation of two products.

      • Midna’s Sister

They still make Wii games. Seriously, let me have an opinion >.>

        • http://www.facebook.com/michael.philliber.7 Michael Philliber

nintendo has stated that no more first party games will be released for the wii. only for the wii u. so no they are not making wii games still.

    • wafflegoat

So you’ve never heard of upgrading? When you say this you sound like you’d be happy with just a NES. Imagine if we never improved our games consoles? Think about stuff before you say it.

      • http://www.zeldadungeon.net/ DA LAWLZ >:3

chill your face! she was just saying that her wii is perfectly fine (unlike mine..XP) and that she dosnt see a point in buying another one! i agree with her but…. SCRIBBLENAUTS UNLIMITED!

      • http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005S0W0MS/?tag=signalpublis-20 Thareous

Same could be said to you… No need to jump on someone over something so inconsequential as a gaming console. We each have our own preferences, and if Midna’s Sister is partial to the Wii then it is her choice, not anyone else’s. ;J

        • wafflegoat

Hahaha…its funny because you’re doing exactly what you told me not to do!!! Oh the irony…LOL
          ¯(°_o)/¯

            I love that emoticon! xD

          • wafflegoat

Its the “I dunno, lol” emoticon!

    • Linkfan99

“milking it”? The Wii was released in 2006, almost 7 years ago. It is high time for Nintendo to release a new console; otherwise they would go out of business and you wouldn’t see ANY more games.

    • Kablamogroup

If Nintendo is milking it, what is Microsoft doing? They released several versions of their Xbox 360 over the past several years: started with the Core, then the Pro (with wireless controllers), then the…I wanna say Elite (black system with more memory and I think built-in Wi-Fi), then whatever they’re calling their latest one (sleeker design AND comes with Kinect).
I’m not sure if there was anything between the Pro and Elite, or the Elite and their latest system. I didn’t invest in Xbox, because most games on it that I thought looked good were also available on the computer (basically every Xbox game that isn’t any of their popular FPS’, like the latest Halos and most CoDs). I think the first Halo and the most recent CoDs are the only games in each respective series that are available for the PC (through Steam or hard-copy).

    • GHIRAHIM

Umm, hello? The Wii U has better graphics, new controller, HD, etc. and is going to get new games, not to mention new Wii games have all but stopped.

      • Midna’s Sister

Everyone, just stop it. Seriously, let me think what I want.

        • wafflegoat

And let us think what we want.

          • Midna’s Sister

Fine. Now just drop the bomb and let it explode in peace, mm’k? It doesn’t need no none o’ yo’ fyaah arrows.

          • wafflegoat

            … ROFL

          • Midna’s Sister

-hair flip- well, humour let the bomb explode in peace. -boom-

          • wafflegoat

            NO. -_-

          • Midna’s Sister

            Al…right…

  • http://lulles.deviantart.com/ lulles

I tested it with Super Mario Galaxy and I didn’t see much difference… Still gotta test it with Twilight Princess.

  • Amber

wish i had the money to get it
i still havent got halo 4 yet, its def on the top of my christmas list

    • Thunerlite421

When you do get Halo 4, be sure you play it in full HD. I just replaced my 360’s component cable with an HDMI, and the game looks AMAZING!!!

      • Amber

        Ill be sure to try

  • Avia Rayne

Unfortunately, I jumped on the Twilight Princess bandwagon when it was announced for release on the gamecube, so I won’t be able to see the upscaled version on my Wii U :(

    • Mseevers95

Ya but the Gamecube version is really the intended version, Twilight Princess is all reversed for the motion controls they added last minute.

  • http://www.zeldadungeon.net/ DA LAWLZ >:3

the only bad thing (for me) is that the Wii U doesnt play gamecube games :( but nothings perfect! although, if it did that would be AMAZING!

    • Mseevers95

Actually they have said that Gamecube games are going to be on the Virtual Console pretty soon.
They’ll probably have a Nintendo Direct to announce it.

      • Kablamogroup

I’m looking forward to that. I’m not planning on getting rid of my Wii (after I get a Wii U) because I have GCN games that I still like to play once in a while, such as Luigi’s Mansion, Pikmin, and the Resident Evil series.

  • Awesome

The only reason I haven’t transferred my data to my WiiU is because I want to keep playing Brawl with the gamecube controllers

    • Anonymous

Understandable, but you can get a Gamepad Pro or a Classic Controller Wiimote add-on.

      • Awesome

true, but they still don’t feel the same in my opinion

  • Princess Zelda

    I’ll try this once I get a Wii U!

  • Someone

Too bad I only got Twilight Princess on the gamecube, and it´s actually useless to buy the same game to play it on another console.
I think I´m just gonna wait till the next major release

    • GHIRAHIM

uh, DUH! Nobody said anything about getting the same game for two consoles, certainly not that it was a great idea. Nobody gets a COD game for both 360 and PS3, because it’s pointless, and this is only slightly less so

  • Cackleberry

On a semi-related note: is it just me, or does the “Zelda Cycle” also apply to the GCN & Wii versions of Twilight Princess? TP Comes Out: “Wii FTW Best Launch Evar *one week later* The heck the GCN version is 4evar the One True Version.” SS Comes Out: “Man, remember that Wii game…? TP? Yeah that was something. WTF it was also for GameCube? Lies and slander!”

  • avalpsychicguy

I do not have an HDTV, but I certainly noticed a difference in sound quality when I popped in Skyward Sword after having played it on my Wii for most of the game. And it might have just been me, but it seemed to look… better, playing it on my Wii U. I’ve actually seen the difference between SD and HD on a regular TV. It’s not nearly as impressive as a real HDTV, but it’s noticeable! :P

    • GHIRAHIM

If it’s not an HDTV, you can’t use HDMI or Component cables, so there isn’t a difference. you’re using the same output, and showing the same resolution

  • Brett

Who else thinks it would be a good idea for nintendo to launch a new wii u VC with either WW or TP? I think the would both look great re-rendered or up scaled to 1080p with such unique visual styles. I never played WW and because TP is on the wii WW seems like it would probably be a better choice but Having played TP on wii (a long time ago) they could port the GC version, with the traditional controls mapped to the gamepad. Then gamepad screen could be used to implement some features in the game including inventory and maps as well as aiming shooting and looking around if you chose. As well as simply playing the game on the gamepad. Not revolutionary and obviously only stuff that was originally in the game but nintendo could use it as a test for how to implement things on the gamepad for future games. Also as one who never played TP on GC it would be fun to play in the mirrored world (or normal world the GC version was developed first)

    • pizzaman

The Wind Waker would look WAAAAY too blocky in 1080p, I think it looks better on the Gamecube.

  • pizzaman

    What about Skyward Sword?

    • Timothy

I haven’t tried Skyward Sword yet but I’ll take a safe bet and claim Wii U allows for improved visuals :)

    • Majoras_Wrath

It’s a lot clearer in 1080p for me. Obviously the textures aren’t all that great but you definitely get a brighter pciture.

  • Ryan

If Dolphin can get games up to 1080p, why can’t Nintendo?

  • wheres_

Skyward sword looks amazing on wii u the colors are vibrant and clear thanks to the HDMI cable.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bs88145 bs8814

There are ways to get around this and upscale it 1080i but it is not easy. Just look for it online people do it all the time. I have seen HD Twilight Princess before there are usually some sort of adapter that helps. Also running it through an awesome computer in an emulator works very well.

  • TehLeetHaxor

It’s upscaled but it’s still rendered internally at 480p. If you want to play Twilight Princess in true 1080p, you’d have to use Dolphin Emulator. That’s how you’d actually get a significant improvement in visual quality. Dolphin Emulator can also apply anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering.

  • Josh

Wow it does make a difference! Sweet. >:)

  • Nico

I’m getting a Wii U in a week, and Wind Waker’s the only major Zelda title I’ve never played because I don’t have a Gamecube, and my Wii is not compatible with Gamecube stuff, so… PLEASE, NINTENDO, GIVE ME A WIND WAKER REMAKE IN WII U! IT’S ALL I NEED!!!!! I’LL EVEN PUT IT OVER ASSASSIN’S CREED 3, NINTENDO LAND, ZOMBIE U AND NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. U IN MY PRIORITIES LIST!!!!!!!!

  • silbrandir

I didn’t notice any real difference in Skyward Sword. It’s fine though, graphics are nice and all, but SS is sufficiently awesome so that it’s not a deal breaker on a HDTV

  • The Unicorn Hanger-Outer

Hmmm… I like the idea of a HD upgrade, though I reckon they should do it with a bad looking game, like MM, instead of doing a pretty good looking one already.

  • itsameluigi1290

AWESOME! Now I can finally play games like Call of Duty in HD!

Oh wait. I don’t like Call of Duty. SKYWARD SWORD IT IS!

    • http://www.facebook.com/jdunbabyyy Marcos Hernandez

Actually you shoudlnt say stuff like that if you dont even play it. Also i am a huge fan of the zelda series my favorite game is wind waker but you shouldnt discriminate about other games like that.

      • itsameluigi1290

I’m not discriminating it, I’m just not a fan. It’s better than saying it’s better than SS, right? Besides, the only reason I don’t like it is because it’s too violent and filled with cussing (The newer ones anyway).

        • dorkgeniuz21

there are more violent games that are way better than cod, like Bioshock, tomb Raider,Far cry 3, The Last of Us etc..The real reason real gamers hate call of duty is becuase besides its multiplayer the story always sucks and isnt fun to play like the other games I mentioned..

          • itsameluigi1290

TWO YEARS AGO I MADE THAT COMMENT OMG
Yeah, you’re right, but at the time I hadn’t seen any of those games in action, besides Tomb Raider (was that out yet?).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Allen-Ryals/624098565 Allen Ryals

My first Zelda game was a link to the past way back in the day. it took me about 3 years too! But I was 4 when I got it.

  • Morgan Rial

yeah I play skyward sword. It looked awesome!!

  • http://twitter.com/mikejcsauer Mike Sauer

I don’t get those “rainbow pixel artifacts” while playing Skyward Sword on my Wii U like I did on my Wii!

It also doesn’t lag what so ever and the picture quality isn’t blurry!

  • Nikki

I really haven’t noticed any difference from playing on the Wii U compared to the Wii for SS, except that when I put it on the Wii U, all my info was lost and I had to completely restart SS! No big deal though(: I’m a little nervous to put TP in the Wii U for that reason though. The fishing at the beginning of the game is kind of difficult for me.

    • Jray

thats just because all your save files are on your wii, you can transfer them to the wii u though if you really want to :P

    • http://www.facebook.com/hannesz1 Hannes Ziegler

Lmao seriously? The save files aren’t on the game disc, they’re on the wii!

  • Vink

If the WiiU upscaled TP to 1080p, it would look exactly like the WiiU tech demo.

  • Termina Hero

I have to start saving money!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/jimmyrhall Jimmy Hall

I tried this today on Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess and frankly, they look way worse on the Wii U. Anyone else find this, and how do you fix it?

    • hollander

      hallow,
srry but do you know how I can play TP on my wiiu?
this article doesnt explain it very well………..

im on the internet on my wii u hahaha was suppose to be for christmas have to wait to get nintendo land though :(

  • Joey Rizzo

I think it looks like shit. It looks worse than an N64 game.
