I Am… Not Error?

“I AM ERROR.” Is without a doubt one of the most famous Zelda memes. What does it mean? Is the man’s name Error? Or is it a legitimate mistake in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link? Hit the jump and read the article to find the answer at long last!

Turns out, Error is his name! Despite speculation that Error is a mistranslation of Errol, or that a convenient bug left Zelda II players with a puzzler of a message, Official Nintendo Magazine reports that Error is…not an error? Error may not be error, but something else is.

Remember this guy? He’s Error’s palette-swap Bagu, who Link has to talk to in order to cross the bridge to Death Mountain. It seems that his name is actually supposed to be named Bug. “Bagu” is how the English loanword would be pronounced in Japanese. Taken together, it’s clear Error and Bug are supposed to be a programming joke. Too bad it was lost on most people.

Did you know the truth about Error? Or about Bagu for that matter? Share with us in that handy-dandy comment section!

  • S. Mario

I always got that Error was supposed to be a joke, but I never knew about Bagu.

  • That Guy

I think it’s pretty obvious to anyone who actually played the game. It’s just that Zelda II is hard enough for people to never get to Bagu. That and the translation team kinda sucked

  • Vaati

    Great but……Was MM3D a hoax or not??????

    • zombie_eat_flesh

      It was. Wishful thinking, though.

      • Vaati

Oh…. I’m not surprised though. On the bright side it did get me back into playing MM on the virtual console!

      • baileygirl99

Awww…I got my darn dreaming hopes up :-( dang it Nintendo!!!! When will they get the point that a LOT of their fans want MM3D and that they would make a LOT of money!?! >:’-( I really wanna play MM3D

  • angrymaskman

    I’m still alive!

  • Tehlul

Errol is the bad guy from Jak 3

    • Thunderlite421

Jak: “I don’t like the sound of your voice!”

    • Kablamogroup

Errol is also the name of the so-old-he-needs-to-retire owl in Harry Potter.

    • Tomer Feiner

And Ellor is the name of some character from the expanded Star Wars universe.

  • Cranbery

Ok. this was very interesting. I never thought about this.
    Cool!

  • ShadowsofTime

I actually knew that one. Though, the I Am Error room still makes no sense. Besides, it even appears in other games, as well. The Binding of Isaac, which is also a biblical version of Zelda 1.

    • baileygirl99

Dude! That game sounds cool! I’m a Christian, so I would love to play that game! Where can I find it? (The Binding of Isaac)

      • frgovo

Erm… from what I’ve heard, if you’re a Christian you might have bad times playing it.

      • bubu

        humblebundle

  • http://medlismessages.blogspot.com/ Heroine of Time

Huh, I’ve actually heard this before, a long time ago! Before I’d even played The Adventure of Link. I think it was on Zelda Wiki or something.

    • AgeOfGlenn

      Me, too.

  • baileygirl99

The more i read the name Error, the more it looks like it’s spelled wrong. Interesting fact though! I almost got lost somewhere in there :-P

  • The Hylian Monolith

Ha… I figured they’d done Error on purpose, but Bagu was supposed to be Bug?… I GET it now!

  • Emma Mix

Wow, so Error isn’t an error, and the one that isn’t error really IS an error. Zelda logic…

  • Clem

I never understand how anyone can think that Error is ACTUALLY an error… I mean, a guy in the Town of Mido refers to Error by name (advising you to talk to him about how to enter the Island Palace), so how could that be a mistake?

    • bubu

Considering Japanese syllables, they could have made the error at the two places. The “l” and “r” sounds are made using the same symbols. Yeah, that is how it would be a mistake…

      • hcpaki95

So you’re saying his actual name might have been Ellor? Or Ellol? Haha I guess maybe…

        • bubu

Or Errol. But Error with Bug makes more sense!

      • Clem

You’re right of course but what I meant to say was that I’m surprised that there are any people who think that the message was a code-side error in the game. I can understand people thinking it’s a linguistic error though.

  • ThrawnTheater

Never knew that Bagu was supposed to be Bug. However, there is a man in the Harbor Town of Mido who says, “Ask Error of Ruto about the Palace”. This pretty much proves that Error wasn’t, well, an error.

    I AM ERROR

Who am I to hold a grudge against the Royal Family’s star surveyor when he turns and cancels out my relevance and presence on the hearing of my name and no social skills to warm its introduction with?

Who could be bothered with brain-picking short and stout townsfolk of hollow lodgings and a shady name when there’s body-nursing to be found behind the doors of nubile residents in gypsy dresses and the conversational chops to back it all up?

And who would I be to draw personal amusement from a Royal crisis when the star surveyor navigates the redundancy of a detour and reappears upon hearing of the knowledge of my knowledge?

I am like a fortune teller. I am a prophet. A fortune teller advertises and theorizes. I know. And any honest prophet does his knowing in untapped silence.

  • audioblogs12

Because I am a programmer, had I known about Bagu I would have been able to guess the truth about Error…

  • pizzaman

We’re just finding that out now?

  • Dark Majora

WE SHOULD GO ON STRIKE UNTIL NINTENDO GIVES US MM3D

    • The Unicorn Hanger-Outer

On strike for what? We don’t work for Nintendo. :P, and if we did, who would make the game?

    • Caleb Lauth

      Good job!

  • itsameluigi1290

I’ve never heard of Bagu before. Maybe because I’ve never played Zelda II…

  • zombie_eat_flesh

So, is this a whole “I Am Spock” and “I Am Not Spock” thing?

  • Jim the James

I knew about the two, so what’s more is ‘Link’ is one too. But what I’m curious about is, as weird as this sounds, if they mistranslated Kasuto like they did Bagu, and instead meant to be Castor? Since Kasuto is the only town name not from Ocarina of Time, yet it sounds quite similar in Minish Cap. Just a thought.

  • avalpsychicguy

I knew about both. ^_^ Mases mentions it in his Zelda II video walkthrough. :D

  • Wind waker Link

    Cool!

  • EyeOfSheikah

What I always liked to think about Error is that he was originally used for bug testing, and that Nintendo decided to put him in the final game for fun.

  • Tobi

Error seemed like a joke to me in the first place, but Bagu is new to me.

  • lando

    lol! Thats quite funny…..
I think that I might include something like that in the next game I make :) (im doing a zelda inspired rpg, so its the perfect game, right?)

  • http://twitter.com/ThomaseDurnad Thomas Durand

Finally after all these years! (I only played this game a year ago) we no what the answer is.
