Curiosity Shop #105: Zelda Dungeon Mailbag

Axle the BeastDecember 6th, 2012 by Axle the Beast

Hey guys! New mailbag! This one’s got a pretty sizable number of questions, too! While fitting them in the usual time, I’ve got a whopping 17 questions. A lot of them are short, and many of them are actually fact questions and not opinion ones (although there’s plenty of opinion ones too), so hopefully this mailbag will be a bit informative! Enjoy! You can watch the video here or check out the embed after the jump.

Questions and timestamps:

(00:26) – What do you think the next Zelda game title will be?
(00:38) – Who is your favorite character from the franchise?
(01:34) – Who is your favorite Zelda boy?
(02:32) – How big do you think Hyrule is?
(03:08) – Can you briefly explain the three timelines to me?
(04:07) – The new Zelda games have started to feel rushed to me. Do you think so? Why or why not?
(05:02) – Are there any connections between the different Temples of Time in Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword?
(05:55) – If Nintendo added voice-acting, what kind of accents do you think they’d give the characters?
(06:50) – Would you like to see a more complex Zelda game with like a Skyrim-sized world?
(07:22) – Why do you think it’s been taking longer and longer for Nintendo to create Zelda games?
(08:01) – Do you think that Zelda Wii U will be the best Zelda game?
(08:26) – How come Ocarina of Time 3D is rated E10+ when the original was rated E?
(08:38) – If Nintendo brings back Majora’s Mask, does that mean that BEN will return?
(08:45) – Is it normal for me to take control of a Cucco if I attack it in Twilight Princess?
(09:03) – Do you think the Thunder Dragon’s nickname for Link, “LD-Link-16″, refers to his age?
(09:32) – Do you think the other Hylians ever came down to the surface after Skyward Sword? What happened to Skyloft?
(10:22) – Do you think Zelda needs a reboot?

Be sure to submit your name/username and questions to our contact page, or if that page doesn’t work then email them to [email protected] for next week’s mailbag! You can also use my Twitter or Facebook, or use the Mailbag Thread on the forums!

Can you guess the quote on the paper, the sound at the beginning, or any of the music? Include them with your question and you might guarantee it gets answered! How about your thoughts about the questions? Who is your favorite Zelda character, and who is your favorite Zelda guy? Tell me your thoughts on these and any other questions you want in the comments!

Well my favorite Zelda guy is link. Because when i play as link i feel like im playing myself, and since im awesome, i like myself the most, therefore link is my favorite.

    • Tehlul

…That’s the most soundproof logic I’ve ever heard.

      • kabro006

        Thanks

    • me

In a sense, you just called every Zelda fan ever, your favorite Zelda guy.

      • Kabro006

well that isnt really true since i said that i like link because IM awesome, and that wouldn´t be logical to saythat every zelda fan is my favorite guy since girls play it too :D

        • TwilightOcarina

Thank you. Girl zelda fan approves :D

    1. The next Zelda game will be: AWESOME! I hope it visits the Hero’s defeat timeline.

“Legend of Zelda:” WHAT? I couldn’t catch that.

    2. Midna. Besides the key characters (hero, main helper, villain, etc.), Saria. I like characters with a history and personality. Fi was good, but not great, because she developed emotion late in the game. I would like to have seen her emotions develop a little earlier.

    3. Link or Axle the Beast! If not them or a main villain (I like Girahim), then the stereotypical rival, Ralph.

    4. I think it’s about the size of Texas, max, if we include all the provinces. If we include alternate realms, lands outside of Hyrule’s Kingom, the watery realms, etc., we’d get Earth, possibly bigger to make up for one great underground realm from the Oracle games.

    5. I understood the timeline before they revealed the 3 split. When Ocarina of Time Link got sent back in time, Zelda remained in the version of the future that lead to Wind Waker. That Link ended up in an alternate past where he hadn’t yet met the princess, and the “original” version of him and Navi disappeared. Nintendo says split #3 is because Link died against Ganon (most likely pig Ganon), but I prefer to think the following version I made years ago. After Majora’s Mask, Link didn’t get sent back in time again (how else can he die and become an ADULT Hero’s Shade. Therefore, another timeline was made where everything the “Returned” Link did was erased. Without the Fairy Boy, Zelda gathered the Sages, gave them guardians, and sealed Ganon with their help.

    6. What do you mean by rushed? Coming out too soon? I don’t think so. Too little gameplay or side quests, quite possibly. Too few items? I prefer to think of it as simplification and making creative ways to use the same item multiple ways.

    7. Well, Skyward Sword is the same basic design as the Ocarina of Time temple, and the Twilight Princess one seemed similar. It’s quite possible that the temple was either copied, rebuilt, or relocated (like the Gargoyle’s Castle) at least once in the Zelda history. We don’t know where Hyrule Kingdom was built after Skyward Sword. So we don’t know if the Ocarina version was the original or a copy, like the Parthenon in the US. I’m guessing it’s a copy/move, but I could be wrong. We don’t know which version of the temple was visited in the past of Twilight Princess. For this, I’ll guess Skyward Sword’s Temple, farther into the past. It could be that the Sky and the Surface had some interaction, and existence, before Demise appeared and/or Hylia separated the two.

    8. I’d want different accents that shows their cultural heritage. The Zoras can be Polynesian/Caribbean, Hylians medieval, the Gerudo Egypt/Arabia or their surrounding countries, the Gorons should be Samoan (what? They’re big and bulky, they’re darker skin, they wrestle. Look up images of big Samoan wrestler.). Either that, or make up a language for us to learn (like Disney’s Atlantis, but better), or use a barely-known, native (doesn’t matter where to) language.

    9. Have to play Skyrim before I make a good answer. I just want more hidden caves, treasures, quests, etc. per square mile.

    10. Because it takes more time to create simple enemies, characters, facial emotions, story and characterization, etc. Because the games are becoming bigger, and packed with more things to do.

    11. Every Zelda game is great. I don’t care which is best, they all have something unique that no other game has!

    12. Better graphics, different raters, different method of rating… If one rater is shocked at the amount of blood, he can rate it higher than one who thinks that green blood that’s small and quickly disappears isn’t so bad.

    Nice answer. Didn’t know that.

    13. I don’t know. Only 1 game can be haunted by 1 ghost, right? I think BEN already chose which cartridge to haunt, and we’re safe.

    14. It’s supposed to happen. When I told my little siblings not to attack the Cuccos in Ocarina of Time, guess what they did every other game? Attack the wildlife, then freak out when wildlife fights back like it’s something new. When they took control of a Cucco, they were shocked!

    15. Possibly. More likely, it’s the 16th Zelda game to officially get onto the timeline. Not the number of Links, since we know that the Oracles, WW/PH, LoZ/AoL, and OoT/MM all share Links, with LA possibly having a repeat Link as well.

    16. Yes they did. What happened to Skyloft is a mystery. It might have become TP’s dungeon, but I’m not so sure about that.

    17. NO! Just make another game that makes a timeline split, or place it anywhere at the end of a timeline or the very beginning.

  • Fred McLean

Pot throwing noise from A Link To The Past! :D

  • LinkFan

LD-Link-16 is referring to SS being the 16th game in the series. My favorite Zelda boy is Link. BEN was not actually a part of MM. Ocarina of time 3D rated E10, because E10 didn’t exist in ’98

  • firecrb

  • itsameluigi1290

“Do you think Zelda needs a reboot?”

    *Looks at Sonic ’06*

    No.

(Then again, Nintendo is better at doing things like this than Sega, so it could work)

  • hot apple Fi

Axle, what did you say for the title of the next game? Didn’t catch it.

    • HunterP

I didn’t hear it all either. But I think he said baloon at the end.

      • http://www.facebook.com/MaaShinn Matthew Shannon

        the hottest balloon

  • GHIRAHIM

well a “reboot” usually happens after a series has been abandoned for a while, and is drastic enough to almost be a change in genre. Like with Metroid Prime and Kid Icarus Uprising. Zelda definitely doesn’t need that big of a change.

  • ZoraWarrior

    Pipit is dreamy…

  • Kabro006

the theme in your video is from the poe guy in ocarina of time.

  • Driorianos

So if you’re quality list is ‘interesting, quirky and slightly creepy’ for favorite characters… does that mean you’ve been holding out on us, Axel, and actually have a deep abiding love for Agitha from Twilight Princess?

About the size of a Kingdom! XD I like the reasonable answer afterwards, but kingdom sized can be big. It actually came up when I was thinking about how if you roll the whole way on your first day out of the forest, you can make it to the Market before dusk. Then I thought of how improbable a distance that was, hence the musing.

Oh oh! About the Temple of Time – So, I don’t know if you ever noticed this, but check out Rauru’s description of the Temple of Time related to the Sacred Realm.

“Ages ago, we Ancient Sages built the Temple of Time to protect the entrance to the Sacred Realm… This is the Chamber of Sages, inside the Temple of Light… The Temple of Light, situated in the very center of the Sacred Realm, is the last stronghold against Ganondorf’s evil forces. The Master Sword–the evil-destroying sword that you pulled out of the Pedestal of Time–was the final key to the Sacred Realm.”

It’s an interesting factor, maybe you should consider that with what we know of the other factors and locations??

  • Victoria

a boy? Ghirahim obviously. If he is a boy.

    • Speck

      Haha

  • ZeldafreakCJM

Zelda dosen’t need a reboot but the fanbase sure does…:/

  • npatoray24

the release dates for the games is an interesting point, it has been taking long in between… and i have to dsagree with you axle… SS was a very easy game as well.

  • Linkfan99

I seriously hope they don’t reboot.

  • The Unicorn Hanger-Outer

1)I dunno. I’ll just have to wait and see!

    2) Probably Tingle. He’s just so CRAZZYY! Tingle tingle koolooh limpah!

3)Probably Pipit. I like him alot. Also, I also said I like tingle.

    4) Probably a tiny bit more than that in TP, as there’s probably some hidden areas not in the game.

    5) Sure! Well, it starts of with Skyward Sword, so that happens. Then you go through four swords. When you get to Ocarina of Time. It gets confusing. Imagine like…a parallel universe. In one universe, if you ever fail in Ocarina of time, one of the time lines happens, called the failure timeline, where a future Link is trying to survive. Then the two other timelines: future and pass are different. When you complete the game, you save it in the FUTURE. But when you go to the past, its like none of the future ever happened. So in the future timeline, different games happen then in the past timeline. That was not a brief explanation. Sorry.

    6) Hmmm. Maybe. We are doing a bit to much too soon. In Ocarina, you have to do three whole dungeons before you get an awesome sword, but in skyward sword, you get it right after the tutorial.

    7) I was actually thinking the same thing today. It’s probably the EXACT same place, but has changed over time. When you put the sword back in Skyward Sword, the sealed grounds slowly change. Later on people probably build a temple around it, to worship the gods. But then it fell apart again in Twilight Princess. When you go back in time in Twilight Princess, that’s probably just a bit after Ocarina of Time.

    8) I doubt they would. It’d probably ruin what everyone thinks they sound like. Probably Link would have this rubbish teenage voice. I really don’t want to think about it.

    9) No. Zelda’s a game where you have a biggish world, but getting 100% isn’t too hard. Skyrim is IMPOSSIBLE to get 100%.

    10) Because they’re getting better and better. Quality over Quantity.

    11) Probably not the BEST game. However it will have very cool new features.

    12) Because the raters are becoming more chicken. Lots of recent M movies I reckon should be PG.

    13) I’m sorry. Who’s BEN?

    14) Everyone’s game does that. Dunno why though.

    15) No. 16 is because skyward sword is the 16th game released.

    16) Yes. That, I reckon is how the humans came along. So the people in OOT are probably the great great great etc grandson of the Skyloftians.

    17) No! Just make a new game that makes a whole new bunch of games in the timeline!

    • Olimar

0_0 TINGLE! (I’m not criticizing your opinion)

      • The Unicorn Hanger-Outer

Not at all. I sorta like Tingle cuz I hate him. It’s kinda odd and hard to describe.

  • littlemissgleek

My favourite guys are Dark Link, Vaati, Ghirahim and especially Sheik (I still like to think of him as a guy, don’t burst my bubble)

  • Darmani IV

Pipit is one of my favorite characters, at least in SS. He really reminds me of myself.

  • OniLink97

Midna and Navi are my favourite characters, aside from Link of course, I think Navi is very unfairly criticised. Fi was just bloody irritating. Skyward Sword created more questions rather than answering them and a few plot holes too. For instance, the Master Sword in TP was said to be created by the sages while in SS we know thats not the case. A more Skyrim like world would be wonderful, just not quite as expansive because than I think it wouldn’t work so well. I would like the next Zelda game to be either a sequel to MM or about the civil war and the formation of the Royal family, that would be quite unconventional and enjoyable because there would be no clear villain. Regarding voice acting and accents, please don’t be offended Americans, it really is not my intention but I really do not think American accents fit in fantasy games full stop. Hearing dwarves in DA:O with American accents made me wince, same with Skyrim, hearing the Nords or Bretons with American accents appeared very fake. The worst was in Dishonored, not quite a Victorian England but heavily based on it with a steam punk element and there were American accents, it did not work. I think the british accents would be good, although what the bloke said about the races having accents based on their cultural heritage would be good, especially if the Gorons do the Haka (that would make my day). I think there should be a mix of motion controls and conventional ones, I missed the 7 hidden moves form TP (yes I know we had the ending blow), if you mixed both up i think it would really demonstrate Link’s prowess with the blade, I don’t think any zelda game has ever done that. Graphics, just like the ones they showed us on the demo for the Wii U please

  • Jeshua

referent to the timeline, I really think that the 1rst line when link is supossed defeated or ganon, is more like a timeline when link was sleep (the seven years of ocarina of time) or maybe could be a Kingdom without a hero, i mean, is not necesary that ganon destroy link :D well that my point of view ;D
