The Triforce Was Originally Meant to Be Chips?

MattNovember 6th, 2012 by Matt

While in Europe after receiving his Prince of Asturias Award, everyone’s favourite game creator Shigeru Miyamoto sat down for an interview with French gaming website Gamekult. Uncharacteristically, Miyamoto discussed the meaning behind Link’s physical appearance and name. We’ve already heard that Link’s design was inspired by the Disney interpretation of Peter Pan, but what about his name? Why, exactly, was Link called Link? And what was the original design of the Triforce–what are the pieces made of, anyway? It’s not a secret to everybody anymore! Hit the jump to see Did You Know Gaming‘s take on the information.

Well, that’s not what I expected. The pieces of the Triforce were originally computer chips? The original design of the entire The Legend of Zelda must have been totally different to how it turned out, because I can’t see how that explanation could possibly fit in to our current understanding of the story.

The other bit of information isn’t too surprising, if you think about it laterally. While “set in both the past and the future” might induce images of Link prancing around in Roman London, let’s not forget that the accepted Zelda timeline spans millennia as it is, albeit in a different world. The various incarnations of Link are still the literal “link” between different eras of Hyrule’s history.

What do you think? Does this latest revelation direct from the lips of Shigeru Miyamoto surprise you? Let us know in the comments below!

    Eh, trolls are gonna troll.

Im glad they changed it and it turned out what it is

  • Amnis

electronic chips? that means the triforce was meant to be some kind of electronic device and each of it pieces was grafted under the skin of the characters?….sorry I’m digress a little xD

    • Amnis

      digressing*

  • Thatonezeldagamer

i wonder if chrono trigger was inspired by this…

    • CronoA7X

How could it when this feature was never implemented into the Zelda game? Not like time travel has never been used in media before.

  • Demise

When I read the title at first I thought it was meant to be potato chips.

    • itsameluigi1290

Me too. They’d be Lays, of course.

      • Someone

Maybe a new concept, ‘Triforce chips’ ^^

        • james

          Doritos!

@886aba72a0cda6157271704b86a3b720:disqus: Oh so it WAS meant to be potato chips?

          • Roth

Dang, I forgot deleting a comment just makes it be by “Guest.” I was trying to remove this to post the (initially) animated one below, not that it turned out so well.

            That’s another twenty likes I have off-record… =/ I’d have broken 300

          • Demise

Ikr? I was always annoyed by this “delete” (or pseudo-delete) feature. Not to mention quite a bunch of lost thumbs ups… I’d have an average of 6 votes per comment or so, I think. (Right now I’m 50 votes short. But 5 votes is still good.)

          • Roth

It doesn’t make any sense, either. Most people who want to delete a comment want to remove it from existence. One more reason Disqus sucks…

          • Demise

Yeah. I can probably understand that other people’s replies would have to be deleted and this and that and etc., but it still sucks. It doesn’t even remove its votes from your total, and doesn’t decrease your number of comments DX

EDIT: Furthermore, since you can edit your post and completely change it, you basically can do anything, except remove it. You may replace everything with a dot, maybe… That’s a good idea, actually.

          • Roth

            Dah-dah-dah-*nom*!

            Nuts, the original spun…

        • Gaseous Snake

The ending could have a 10 minute scene of link eating chips

        • itsameluigi1290

Must… resist… urge to make… The Legend of Zelda: The such and such of something joke…

          • Link_The_Ultimate_Chronomancer

The Legend of Zelda: OoT 3: Fat Boy’s Revenge

          • itsameluigi1290

I was thinking, The Legend of Zelda: The Tostitos of Courage.

          • Link_The_Ultimate_Chronomancer

But with Fat Boys revenge, not only do you have the long-awaited OoT 3, (the skull kid obviously being the fat boy; from eating the Tostito of Power) you also have the best boss theme evar:
            Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na
            na-FATMAN!!!!!!!!

          • Link_The_Ultimate_Chronomancer

And the thing about the Tostito of Power – You can’t eat just one; but there is only one. DUN DUN DUUN!!

      • Linkfan99

I thought of it as tortilla chips, or maybe doritos.

        • itsameluigi1290

Yeah, I was just saying Lays cuz they’re yellow. Doritos would fit much better, shape wise.

          • Linkfan99

haha this conversation’s so weird lol.

          • itsameluigi1290

            Yeah, lulz.

      • pokeninja183

        half empty as always

        • itsameluigi1290

Ugh, that’s the one thing I hate about these snack food products.

    • kjn798

      Same…

  • itsameluigi1290

That would’ve been cool. Link could have a Light saber!

    • Gaseous Snake

And we could hear gannon breathing

      • ePik Min

Link meets Sheik for the first time…
Navi (with Ackbar’s voice): “Hey! It’s a trap!”

    • The Hylian Monolith

Hey, Roth! Comment here already or I’ll steal SZ from you!
That sounded like Navi. . .

  • Roth

Proof that whatever the Triforce was originally, what it has become over the course of the series is what’s definitive. Can people please stop talking about the Tetraforce now?

  • thelinkmaster001

computer chips? maybe it was supposed to be a futuristic game?

  • linkasourous

Wow….Set in the past and the future? Is that how we got “A Link to the Past” from?

  • Pendio

Heh! That’s very interesting. The whole Zelda series could have turned out completely different… :-

  • BlackRaven6695

They kind of brought the idea of past and future together back with Skyward Sword, in a way.

  • The Dark Lord Demise

I thought they were chips as in food :)

  • Kaya Richie

Part of that is wrong. Link was named Link because Miyamoto felt that he was your Link into the world of Hyrule.

    • Matt

I did check the source before writing this up as I have heard your explanation before too, but it seems legit :)

    • Linkfan99

No, that was just a speculative theory some people had. This is the actual interview with Miyamoto. Plus, after Miyamoto changed his mind about the whole future thing, he might have changed the meaning of Link’s name.

      • CronoA7X

Actually no, Miyamoto has stated several times that he named him Link because of the link between the player and the game, it is not a theory.

        • Linkfan99

Actually NO, wrong again, check your facts before you say them. Look here:

(below the zelda picture, first paragraph)

          http://mynintendonews.com/2012/11/04/miyamoto-talks-about-the-origin-of-link/

It CLEARLY states that Link was meant to be the Link between the past and future. It ALSO shows the conversation had with nintendo. Get your facts right.

          • CronoA7X

I understand this new interview but I take it you have never read any interviews prior to this one? Maybe you should get YOUR facts straight.

“When a player is playing a Zelda game, my desire is for the player to truly become Link—that’s why we named him Link, so the player is linked to the game and to the experience.” – Eiji Aounuma

          • ET34

            GAHHHHHH! STOPZ ARGUINHHHHHH!

          • Linkfan99

Well, maybe we should go with the more recent one, as it IS the most recent one, and probably the most accurate.

  • Linkfan99

Oh, I thought it meant tortilla chips. XD

  • Tommyjoe Pete

…That’s weird. I’m glad it was changed- imagine castle town looking like Tokyo!

  • http://www.facebook.com/edman.orcuttravihutt Edman Orcuttravihutt

i thought potato chips untill i read this

  • TwilightMirror11

If Nintendo released this as a chip brand… Nintenchips! They would look all different and stuff… and have cheese powder on them! =D

  • baileygirl99

Wow. That seems WAY out of context. But I get why they named him Link! It makes so much sense!!!!

  • Foxdive

That explains A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time

  • http://www.facebook.com/drake.wietstock Drake Wietstock

electronically charged, metallic chips Matt. I’m still in middle school and i know that.
