Favorite Zelda Moments: Guards Duck Out of Helping Ilia

Axle the BeastNovember 15th, 2012 by Axle the Beast

For a game that I complain about not being whimsical enough, Twilight Princess still manages to have the funniest moment of the entire series for me. This is the one scene that makes me laugh more than anything else in Zelda: The moment when the Hyrule Castle Town soldiers duck out of helping Ilia and Ralis get to Kakariko Village.

At this point in the game, the player would be trying to get into the Lakebed Temple, and this mission led them to help Ralis recover, for which the reward was the Zora Armor. But the only healer capable of helping a Zora like Prince Ralis was in Kakariko, so Ilia was going to take him there. The eavesdropping soldiers volunteer to help, cheering and yelling and getting psyched up for it. This is the part that makes me laugh the most. It’s hilarious how pumped they get, just like “YEAH GUYS LET’S DO THIS!!!”

Then Telma explains the dangers and monsters that are out there in the fields to Ilia, and the guards stop cheering, look at each other, and run off mid-explanation with one hilarious straggler. Telma yells at them, and then notices Link, who, of course, is the one to help them get to Kakariko. The ensuing cart defense sequence is a pretty epic moment of its own, but this funny scene is my favorite of the two by far. It might not sound terribly funny, but you just have to watch it yourself to get the full impact, with the audio and whatnot.

So did you find this scene funny or like it as much as I did? Got another moment you find funnier? Tell me in the comments!

Oh hell yes, that is one of my favourite moments! I totally cracked up when they ran.

This kinda answers the question that has to have been on players’ minds since the original title came out: how does Hyrule always wind up being taken over by evil? I suppose if this is supposed to be their military….I see why now.

    • Jaypike

    • Lord Shadowhand Darkskull

it’s the essence of demise’s hatred, as explained in skyward sword
also those are guards that were drafted following zant’s slaughter of the former military, normal young men with no training at all

    • d

still there are a lot of them.

    • Hylia

They’re about as useful as Princess Peach’s Toad “guards” in Mario

      • Zelda is the Bomb!!!

Yeah but at least these guys have weapons unlike the Toads.

      • itsameluigi1290

“Useful” isn’t in the Toads vocabulary.

I loved this scene. Every time I play the game it cracks me up. It’s a nice reminder that the Zelda series never forgets its lighthearted core. Another favorite scene of mine would have to be in The Wind Waker, when you place the three pearls in their statues and the Tower of the Gods appears.

The whole part with Link ducking to escape the explosion only to get faked out always gets me. Plus, Toon Link’s voice is just so funny; his screaming while he soars through the air and hits the side of the tower with a cartoon SPLAT is always enjoyable.

  • Wendy

This is one of the reasons Twilight Princess is my favorite!! The cut scenes are so great.

funniest and worst moment ever for me: that first time you return to the shop after you think you got away with daylight robbery on Link’s awakening. oh how wrong we all were.

    • pokemon brown

Similar with me, only it was when the girl that found you on the beach (can’t remember her name) first called me THIEF. There was something about seeing the word thief in all caps that made me hear the “Da, Da, Da, Dum” music and made me think “OH Crap, she’s going to kill me.” And then the game continued as if nothing had happened. I laughed so hard, mostly at the tricks my mind was playing on me.

  • Darkgreyfire

Funniest moment in my mind, is Salvatore’s comments during the battleship mini game in wind waker. “The childeren of the town rejoiced, hooray!”

        • Blackbaldrik

I read those in his voice.

          • The Wanderer

Almost impossible not to. Salvatore managed to turn an otherwise run-of-the-mill mini-game into something truly memorable. I’d like to think it’s a good memory.

  • RubyDragonCat

This part is awesome…those guards are wimps. They’re pathetic. No wonder it was so easy for Zant to take over…

  • stephonikawkaye

Funnier moment: Link’s face when Armagohma isn’t actually dead and you have to fight her eye and babies with funny music playing. I LAUGHED!!!

    • RubyDragonCat

Oh yes. He was all: wtf?

  • Alberto Mani

That was hilarious!! I love how Link ends up helping, instead of multiple guards. And I believe they were all over the Hyrule plaza.

    • linkypete

Have you ever tried being in wolf form around those guards in castle town? they try to act brave, holding their spears and pointing them at you, but they’re actually shaking like crazy they are too scared to even try to stab you in wolf form.

      • Speedsk8

Also, if you spin attack around them while you’re a wolf, they’ll drop a green rupee

        • ET34

…and sometimes arrows, though they don’t have bows. O_o

  • zombie_eat_flesh

When I first saw that, my first thought was “Disappoint.”

I love Twilight Princess because although its main plot line may very well be “Ocarina of Time 2.0″, the sidestory is rich and varied with subtle bits of humor. This nuance was later fleshed out in Skyward Sword through such characters as Groose, Karane, and Pipit.

    • totaldeath

Or “A Link to the Past 3.0″

  • GOROHUG!!!!!!!!!!

    I loved that moment.

  • blabla

Twilight Princess is my favorite video game of all time!

    • TwilightMirror11

Agreed, my brother in faith… 0.o

Zelda needs to seriously restructure most of her government programs. No matter how much of a ‘good ruler’ she claims to be eventually people are going to get pissed at her neglecting certain aspects of the kingdom and start a rebellion.

Reorganize the military to provide stricter training for soldiers along with better weapons so when the need arises Hyrule can rely on them to defend Castle Town from threats while Link is otherwise occupied.

Create an organized road system between the various towns and other minor kingdoms with a group set up to keep roads clear of monsters. Rope bridges would be demolished and replaced with something sturdier along with alternate routes.

Better protection for the smaller towns that are not directly inside Castle Town, a small academy to train soldiers with veterans as instructors and a less complicated way to enter the towns themselves. Only having ONE key for Kakariko is inexcusable.

When a threat DOES come along that military power alone can’t handle then alliances would be formed with the Zoras and especially the Gorons so they could be called in as reinforcements.

    • anonymous

Yes, that would do very well. I also say, if at all possible, an alliance with the Bulblins (those guys are like roaches: infinite numbers, and they just won’t leave!!!).

  • frgovo

My favorites are the moments involving Link’s unexpected facial expression.
Like (in WW) his face when the Great Deku Tree starts talking an incomprehensible ancient Hylian. The xylophone notes accompanying that face are also priceless.
Though the best IMO is one that involves his face less than the awkward silence. It’s right before Sky Keep in SS (so stop reading if you don’t want spoilers), when the bird-like statue charges a seemingly powerful shot… then a small cannonball pops out, hits the island barely scratching it, and falls down. And then the extremely long awkward silence accompanied by Link’s face that seems to be saying “Just…what…was…that…”

I love this part so much.

    • Rob

      Link: Okay… That happend umm-WHOA!!!
      Structure: KABLAM!

      • Cucco Link

When I saw that I simply said,”Wait a minute, I did all of this… FOR THAT! But this just can’t be right, I mean… WHOAH WHAT THE HECKdjvHKDJVD<HSDVKHDVKKS"

    • Midna’s Sister

He was like…. “Seriously…? I got chaised by monsters for nothing!?”

  • Shadow Link

I’m glad there’s finally a post about this. When I first saw this cutscene, I was laughing for about five minutes straight!

  • TwilightOcarina

I laughed my head off when I saw this… I was so caught up in being sad for Ilia and Ralis and everybody else that this moment was so welcome. They chose the perfect time to put it in.

  • baileygirl99

I liked this scene…I think I laughed…it’s been a while. But I HATED the part when I had to escort Ilia and Ralis to Kakariko. I failed maybe around three times, and I had no idea that Telma didn’t know how to get to Kakariko. I drove me nuts.

  • aelic7

I love that scene in TP when King Bulblin attacks Kakariko and rides up to Barnes. King Bulblin raises his helmet, and then Barnes lowers his mask. I don’t know why, I just find that scene so funny.

  • Link Fanatic

It was one of the BEST moments in the game! and still is!

  • person

Definatly the funniest thing I’ve seen is Phi’s description of the Guays when she says something like ‘if their excrement hits you, I estimate your annoyance at 100%’ I laughed so much when I read that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/GoldenFlute Alyssa Callahan

One of my favorite things is talking to the animals when you’re in wolf form in TP. The cats and dogs are all saying things like, “I like fish” or “Please play with me” and stuff, but the cuccos recite introspective poetry! It cracks me up every time I talk to them.

  • Midna’s Sister

I loved when Link jumps on Epona in Kakariko and she rears…. He’s like… “Goddess, howin the world do I control this thing!?”

  • Eldisano

This reminds me of something out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

  • ZeldaGames1095

I found that in Skyward Sword when you first activate Scrapper to be more funnier only because he mentions how short he is, while the fact of the matter is that Link is 10 times bigger then Scrapper himself so it made me laugh.

  • Tehlul

  • adleZ

In my opinion the “silliest” part in twilight princess is when the boar rider greets Barnes by putting up his helmet and scared old Barnes just puts down his own helm.

  • Link_The_Ultimate_Chronomancer

When I saw the title, I thought it was “Guard Duck” from the comic strip “Pearls Before Swine.” I was like, whuut?

  • moondusk16

yeah, i agree with axle. it was pretty funny :)

  • itsameluigi1290

This is the best moment in any video game, movie or TV show that ever existed in the universe ever.

  • BlackRaven6695

I think the scene where Groose follows Link to the surface is my funniest moment in the series.
