Favorite Zelda Moments: Entering the Dark World

Axle the BeastNovember 6th, 2012 by Axle the Beast

Sorry about postponing the Great Bay Temple review, but in the meantime I wanted to briefly talk about the first visit (or first couple) to the Dark World in A Link to the Past. I played Ocarina of Time before I played A Link to the Past, but I ended up beating the older game first, so I had very few — if any — expectations of the series at that time. It was a very fun game to me, and I had also yet to become jaded as far as fantasy cliches go, but I was still aware of how straightforward and normal the world was. And then I was on Death Mountain and got whisked away to another place.

Trapped in helpless bunny form and wandering around to a cool tune that I used to prefer over the main Dark World theme (for shame!), I learned that this was a place where people turned into monsters according to what was in their heart. Awesome. Little did I know I would return here later, but alas I did so without acquiring the Moon Pearl, so I was left to wander the Dark World as a bunny once again. Acquiring the Moon Pearl was actually a major trial for me as a gamer that took a lot of wandering around, exploring, and thinking… and even then I didn’t do it alone and probably wasn’t the one to figure it out.

The Moon Pearl is legitimately tricky to acquire thanks to where it’s placed (at least it was for me when I was younger), and the reward for doing so is the larger half of the game and a cool, dangerous world filled with monsters and an awesome song. This was an excellent bit of game design, especially considering the earlier Death Mountain visit to the Dark World is completely random at the time, but foreshadows a major plot point that’s been relevant since before the story started, even if you don’t know it yet. Excellent storytelling, excellent progression, and a cool setting.

Discovering the Dark World for the first time, and venturing into it for real, are both some of my favorite gaming moments of all-time. What about you? How did you feel about the Dark World and its introduction? Got any other favorite moments surrounding these? Tell me in the comments!

  • vote for Romney and we all die

im nearly through this game on my first play through, and i have to say i find this game dull at best. perhaps i should have played it when i was kid. i played loz from the start of the series but never owned this game until i was an adult. i played through twilight princess before i played alttp so this game feels like old news to me

    • Ocarinist Of Time

you’re cheating?!?! How can LttP not make you spellbound?!?!

  • The Wanderer

More fuel to my fire of wanting to play A Link to the Past. No, I have not played one of the most classic Zelda games of all time. Yet. It’ll happen someday, and I look forward to these apparent moments in the game until then.

    • Darkgreyfire

Good game out of the 2ds to start with. It’s great to see where a lot of the influence of modern day games, from OOT to Skyward, came from.

    • Kravik

You are lucky! ;) I would love to have that experience again! ;) (I am going to replay it some of these days, though.)

  • The Dark Lord Demise

Favorite Zelda Moments: The Final Battle(Twilight Princess)

    • Demise

Favorite Zelda Moments: Just Before the Final Battle, Skyward Sword

      • ChuckNorrisLoZ

Whaaaaaaaa? Contradicting your self!!!?!? BWAAAAAaaaaAAAAAAAA! (similar names are confusing….)

      • Hello I am the ChuChu

Those who disliked: Recognize that this is Demise talking.
I liked that comment. . .just so you know, O High Master of Darkness.

My favorite moment: Minish Cap Chuchu boss! :) My Second-favorite momnet: Well, DArk WOrld,a a bunny, when you’re helpless. It woul’ve felt so good to be tehre asnd just jump on him until he dies… (8D 3

    • Tuba of time

Need to play some of thr older games then.

      • The Dark Lord Demise

I played them too!Twilight Princess is just more EPIC!!!!!

    • BlackRaven6695

I love those battles! My favorite is the fight with Link and Ganon both in their beast forms.

  • VikzeLink

For some reason, the most epic Zelda moment for me is the cutscene when you drain the well of it’s water in OOT. You play the Song of Storms, and then the music speeds up and the well drains, that cutscene is so well made that I still get goosebumps from it!

  • Darkgreyfire

Great moment that changed the Zelda series direction forever. This was the first dimension/time change in a Zelda game. Also, my personal favorite music in any Zelda, The LTTP Dark World Theme.

  • Willnox

Best Zelda game in the series period. There is no better of a masterpiece of a game.

  • Kris

Any cutscene that involves Sheik in OOT is my favorite Zelda moment. Sheik’s theme gives me chills every time.

  • A_LINK_IN_TIME

You know why Axle delayed the Great Bay Temple editorial? Because the dungeon is so damn hard. But I kid.

Entering the Dark World for the first time was a joy and Nintendo has wonderfully adapted the concept in later game, most prominently The Minish Cap with its size changing twist.

I actually beat it in about an hour and a half on Saturday. I just ran out of time to write. =P

      • chaoswanderer

I am looking forward to the water temple again. My friend and I are replaying Ocarina of Time and it is his second time ever beating it. I am reliving my first experience through him.

On a different topic the dark world theme has been my cellphone ringtone from the first day I have ever had a cellphone.

        • Kravik

Same here with the ringtone! ;)

  • JuicieJ

Entering the Dark World for the first time was really awesome, but fighting the enemies was kind of a pain. The spike in difficulty was unreal and something that should have been held off until, like, the last 3 dungeons. Still a cool place, though.

  • Pizzaman

How do you get the moon pearl anyway? When I played the game on the SNES, I just glitched across using a bomb, because I couldn’t figure out any other way.

    • joshcv11

It’s in the tower of Hera

    • chaoswanderer

In the room just before the boss you hit the star switch and drop down one of the holes that appear.

  • joshcv11

for me for some reason i dont get the hype about a link to the past. i really liked links awakening better.

  • Tremaine

Such an important moment in videogames for me. I had watched my brother and his friend go through the entire Lightworld for days. They had no guide or anything, and thought they had beaten the game and were quite proud of themselves. And then came the Darkworld. When my brother realized what had happened, he said something like “**** this” and threw the controller to the ground and stormed out of the room. I, having never played a Zelda game before, picked up the controller and eventually defeated Ganon myself. ALTTP has since been my favorite game of all time tied with with FF3/6.

    • Kravik

When I rented it others had saved their progress. So I started playing it like yourself! :D
Then one day I rented it, and it was raining and we could not figure out what to do.. It is just the greatest game ever made! But that is true only for those who played it as a kid, I think..

  • Kravik

First Zelda game I played.. It is just AMAZING!
I rented it first.. Then bought it! :D What a game! :)

*bitch slaps all that says ALTTP is dull, lame, and sucks really really really hard in the face then chops their dicks/tits off* :) justice biotch! ALTTP ftw! most fave game ever least fave Zelda game is Zelda 2 but thats obvious lol

    • Kravik

Get Zelda 2 for the virtual console on a 3DS .. And I bet you would change opinion about Zelda 2.. I know I did! ;) Now playing Zelda 1, and it rocks! :D

I could never bother to play it without the saving function virtual console provides though.

But I would have when I was a kid. ;)

          Too easy to cheat.. :p

          • Ultima Link

eh? That battle was excruciating. I don’t see how it is easy to “cheat” as you say…

          • http://www.facebook.com/kraviken Kravik

            SPOILER ALERT! ..

Crouch down in the right corner and slash sword! .. It is a bit random, but one can do this and never get hurt even once.

(I have had a long day and am a bit tired, so just to be sure, we are speaking of the last boss of AOL, right?)

Here: I found a link on youtube of one who does it losing only one health-bar .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltTkv1nG9dY

          • Ultima Link

            *rage quits*

          • http://www.facebook.com/kraviken Kravik

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPxY8lpYAUM

            ;)

PS: It is not really cheating, as one naturally can end up in that corner doing so. But it feels so easy that I wish Nintendo had left that option out ..

          • Ultima Link

PS: *rage quits-aga* (think about Final Fantasy spells)

          • http://www.facebook.com/kraviken Kravik

  • StickyChickenJohnson

My question is what if you never figure out to get the moon pearl, or where it is? Are you just screwed because you didn’t find it?

  • The Dark Lord Demise

What was Link’s Dark World form

    A bunny!

ALttP was the first real video game I ever played in my life! The dark world was amazing, and I still hum the music today.

  • Irishdragon5

I always wondered, as “people turned into monsters according to what was in their heart” an link was a rabbit. Maybe it was that he was kind, gentle and innocent. Or he really had a way with the ladies. It could’ve been anything.

  • zeldafreak

I wish I could play this!I have it but I didn’t start it yet.Thats because I dont have time to.

  • TheHeroOfKokiri

    Is’s diddely dark
