Curiosity Shop #103: Zelda Dungeon Mailbag

Axle the BeastNovember 22nd, 2012 by Axle the Beast

Hey guys! New mailbag! Got a fair number of broad questions this time, covering wider topics relating to the series in general, but we’ve also got a pair of A Link to the Past questions this time, which is cool because we don’t see that a ton. Two Skyward Sword questions as well. And one that seems inspired by a joke I made on the Halloween mailbag! 11 questions in all. Enjoy! You can watch the video here or check out the embed after the jump.

Questions and timestamps:

(00:20) – Do you like to change Link’s name in the games? Do you put something ridiculous?
(01:05) – Which is better for the series? Orchestrated or sequenced music?
(02:28) – Have you heard of the 3-heart challenge? Have you done it, or will you do it?
(03:45) – How would you feel about more spinoff games or direct sequels in the series?
(04:51) – Do you think it would have been better if, instead of making an official timeline, Nintendo had just said that each game is the same story retold?
(05:54) – Are the Poes based on Edgar Allen Poe?
(06:27) – Why is Link’s hair pink in A Link to the Past if it’s brown in the artwork?
(07:22) – Do you think its a coincidence that the villain gains the trust of the king by becoming his adviser in both A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time?
(07:42) – I liked how a lot of the dungeons in Twilight Princess appeared to be more natural environments. What did you think of this and should they continue this theme?
(08:29) – How exactly did the Mogmas go extinct, and did the Zoras just evolve… A LOT?
(09:29) – I read that the Timeshift Stones send the area back exactly 1000 years. Is this true?

Be sure to submit your name/username and questions to our contact page, or if that page doesn’t work then email them to [email protected] for next week’s mailbag! You can also use my Twitter or Facebook, or use the Mailbag Thread on the forums!

Can you guess the quote on the paper, the sound at the beginning, or any of the music? Include them with your question and you might guarantee it gets answered! How about your thoughts about the questions? Do you give Link a custom name or leave it as Link? What do you change it to? Tell me your thoughts on that and any other questions you want in the comments!

one of my friends thinks that the first LOZ game to release is the Adventure Of Link also that LOZ had arcade release’s and that the link in every game is the exact same one from the original. He is very wrong

    • Assasin1010123

      wrong indeed

      • crb

        he’s also older than me

        • baileygirl99

          Yikes.

  • Tehlul

For three heart runs I name my file Courage.

    • baileygirl99

That’s cool. I like that name, especially in a 3 heart run.

    • Wendy

I like that. I’m doing a TP one right now… it IS one of the easier Zeldas so maybe I can do it! :D

  • erikingvoldsen

    Ganondorf was the king’s adviser?

    • Tehlul

      He swore allegiance to him
My assumption is that ganondorf used the kings desire to unite the races in hyrule against him to gain his trust.

      • Ninty

Like, maybe he turned the members of each region against the king? Or secretly harvested his demons to strike each region?

  • Demise

    1. I usually put Link, athough when I replay a game I like naming him “Zelda”/”Tetra”, or “Myself”.

    2. I like both. Dunno. Orchestrated is certainly better quality… I think I might go with that.

    3. I have heard, and although I have not tries yet I plan to do so soon (starting with OoT, I’m not yet sure with SS). BTW, 3-heat challenge is simply impossible in SS (because you start with hearts :P)

    4. I don’t really like spin-offs that much. I’d like Nintendo to concentrate on the main series most. Although if another studio does it then it’s fine by me.

    5. Honestly, I don’t really care about the intricate timeline, except of course that SS comes first, ST is the sequel to PH is the sequel to WW, and obvious stuff like that. Although I don’t agree with “the same story retold”; the plots are drastically different in each game. (And as for “the obvious stuff”, you can’t deny that, right? Obviously ST is not the same as PH is not the same as WW!)

    6. No idea. Probably not.

    7. I haven’t played ALttP but I’ve heard that in earlier games artwork colours were often different to in-game colours. There can be several reasons, probably the in-game colour was changed to suit the environment better (e.g. stand out from it better) after the artwork was made. This might be the case with Link’s hair, or maybe the atowkr was even made after the sprite but they didn’t was him to have pink hair in the artwork.

    8. If he’s the same Ganon(dorf), it makes sense he uses similar tactics. Development-wise, I think it wasn’t intentional from Nintendo.

    9. Definitely more of that. I like SS because the dungeons weren’t random temples without explanation (mostly). The Sandship, Ancient Cistern, Lanayru Mine are completely non-temples. (I haven’t player TP.) Having this return in a future game would be absolutely great.

    10. How did the surface suddenly merge into 1 area? During the process, it is anly natural that some races would become extinct. As for the Zoras, do you mean that the Parellas evolved into Zoras? It is possible however they are VERY different. And also the Parella may have become extinct themselves. Probably they’re just different. In fact, Oocas having evolved from either LOftwings of Skyloftians is more probably, since they were left in the sky, isolated from external disturbances… That said, it is still improbable. And off-topic.

    11. In the game, I think it mentions “thousands of years”. I highly doubt it’s exactly 1000 years.

PS I have not yet watched the video :P

    • The Boulder

      3) For Skyward Sword you could do a six heart challenge on hero mode :D

      • Demise

        100% 6-heart speedrun :P

  • DrakeStoel

I like naming myself as the villain :) That way everyone loves and hates me (and gives a humorous line from Ganondorf at the end of OoT)!

  • Guest

    No bloopers……

  • baileygirl99

I remember the very first time I played a Zelda game, I didn’t know the character’s name was originally Link, so I named him bj. To me, that’s a girl name, so it was kinda funny. It puzzles me how the Zoras evolved into the Rito. They are completely different in appearance…

  • Pizzaman

Whenever I play Zelda, I usually put “Pizzaman”, because there are just enough letters for it.

  • Atheistbigred

The quote is what the witch, Koume, says when she’s explaining the mini game at the swamp tourist center (Majora’s Mask).

  • James

I always name my file James, after my name.

  • James

Link’s change of hair colour in A Link to the Past is the same as Terra’s change of hair colour in Final Fantasy VI. It was either done because of technical limitations or because their regular hair colour never animated as well.

  • The-Doctor

the Poe’s names are based off the main characters in little women, and the ideas of the Poes come from a Japanese religion (can’t remember the name of it right now)

    • Triumph-Forks5

      Shinto?

      • The-Doctor

        maby that sounds right…

  • rulerofyourface

I normally name my Link Lotus, just cause that’s what I’ve always named him

I don’t think that the Mogmas went extinct. I think that they migrated to Holodrum and settled Subrosia. The Mogmas and Subrosians both live underground and both deal with ore. We don’t know what the Subrosians look like under their hoods, so this could work.

I’d LOVE to see a Skyward Sword prequal, where the story begins on the ground and, when the Demon War starts, we see Demise at its highest rank, but in a different form, as Skyward Sword’s Fi states that Demise comes back as a different form in every epoch, as a different form to each person. Then, when the war starts to engulf the soon-to-be Skyloft, Hylia sends it into the sky. This Hylia, however, is not one that has a physical form; she only comes to the Hylians when they need her, and she appears in a green, red, and blue fire, like a spirit, representing the three lesser goddesses; Din, Farore, and Nayru.

    • Invader_Zim342

I doubt that we’ll see anything like that, as the games tend to not actually show the various wars, but Nintendo has surprised me before, and it would certainly be pretty cool. However, surely you did not really mean “lesser” goddesses in reference to Din, Nayru, and Farore. From what knowledge we have, the golden goddesses are the highest in the Hyrulean Pantheon.

I think the series has plenty of room for direct sequels/prequels; I feel like theres currently plenty of Links and most of them have plenty of room for storyline expansion. Specifically, a Majora’s Mask sequel, involving Majora himself, would be insane. I remember seeing some kind of fan-made concept about that online somewhere.

  • BlackRaven6695

I usually name Link Raven but in Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask I call him Kasuto because Kasuto is the only town in Adventure of Link that doesn’t have a corresponding character in Ocarina of time.
As for Link’s hair, I think they needed regular Link used the same colour palette as his bunny form so they needed to have some of him pink.

  • The Boulder

The Boulder prefers to name Link the Boulder. The Boulder also names all of the Boulder’s rock and fighting Pokemon the Boulder.

    fuck you axel

  • iKhan

I believe Hyrule Historia says that the parella became the Zora

  • Dart

I am planning to do some of the minimalist challenges soon. Thinking of skipping boss hearts, on one playthrough of PH I got every spirit gem and every other heart peice, but managed to miss one boss heart. No idea how.

  • lol

    i name link “i’m horny”

  • audioblogs12

    1. I’m ToonLink
    2. I like both. Orchestration fit SS.
    3. I gave up on the 3-heart challenge when I found out you can not do it in the original NES game or in A Link to the Past.
4.spin-offs and remakes are good for filling time, but I want an original game. A sequel would be fine.
5.I don’t consider the “official” timeline to be the final say in the timeline. I will continue to theorize based only on the games.
6.No, but they are named after him.
7.Pink hair? Not on this sprite sheet! It’s clearly blonde
    http://www.wiizelda.net/images/alttp/sprite1.png.
    8. Yes, coincidence.
    9. I still want to be unable to recognize a dungeon from the main world. I also want them to give me back my magic clocks and my one-size-fits-all cross-dungeon keys.
    10. I don’t know where the mogmas went. The closest thing we see to them are acro-bandits from Minish Cap, and even those are not quite the same. Oddly enough, we also get “mole mitts” in Minish Cap which allow us not only to dig a red rupee out of the rich soil in front of Link’s house and tunnel, but also to throw rocks over Link’s head. I hope we see a return of the Mogmas in the next game.
    11. I think that is based on the fact that Zelda goes a millennium into the past when she goes into the time wall place. I need to double-check where I found a quote like that in the game…

who asked the poe question? im pretty sure it was me

  • CuriousCuriosityShopper

    8:43 I do not know the word you use here so I’ll “spell” it in an attempt at phonetics;
    what is a (Purr-EHL-lah)?

    • Speck

The squid things that follow the Water Dragon in Skyward Sword are parellas.
