Zelda Races: Deku Scrubs

HanyouOctober 20th, 2012 by Hanyou

Deku Scrubs are one of the more interesting races in Zelda canon. Often, they’re portrayed as enemies, and they’re effective ones. They’re a good modification of the Octorock for a 3D world, and it’s unfortunate that they’ve only been prominently featured in a few of the games. But even from their first appearance, there were pockets of Deku civilization that seemed to break from the norm.

The enterprising Business Scrubs are memorable for offering Link items in the wild. Like regular Deku, you had to fight them. It wasn’t a particularly hard task, and once you did, you would have access to either useful or irrelevant items. Since items were abundant in Ocarina of Time, I rarely found them very helpful, but the idea of the business scrub was fantastic.

The Deku became far more fleshed-out in Majora’s Mask. Not only did they have their own civilization, but it seemed more politically advanced than most other locations in Termina. It had its own unique culture, providing a fantastic introduction to the game.

The Deku are an anomaly in Majora’s Mask. They’re a race with a centralized political structure, but if the Business Scrubs count as Deku Scrubs of a sort, it’s also clear that some of them are willing to break away from that. Not many races have standout characters outside their centralized civilization, if such a civilization exists; the Majora’s Mask business scrubs provided a fun sidequest, though, and it’s always a joy to help them out.

Not to mention, playing as Deku Link was just plain fun, and brought them to an even more prominent position! Here’s hoping we can see more of them in the future, as Skyward Sword’s Octorocks, though close, just weren’t quite the same.

How do you feel about Deku Scrubs? Do you think they’re a particularly interesting race? Should they be brought back?

yes! i would love it if they were brought back! they always had something funny to say!

    • Midna’s Sister

      Twenty-three is number one!

  • Rutarete

I’ve always wondered what a Deku Scrub would be like as a boss.

    • EOTW

I think it would be cool if there was a Deku Scrub boss fight where the fight was actually getting to the Scrub. It would be a relatively normal Scrub (as in not giant), but there would be a Deku contraption or gauntlet to get through. When you get to him… he just gives up (like any sane Deku Scrub). XD

      • Ninty

Contraption? Kinda sounds like an active puzzle game as opposed to the ones where you can really take your time. Is that what you mean?

        • EOTW

I’m thinking about a multi-tiered wooden robot…. if that makes any sense. You would be climbing onto it, finding a weak point, destroying a tier, until all that is left is the uppermost portion. Then you get a “don’t pay any attention to the man behind the curtain!” moment when the Deku Scrub is revealed.

          • Demise

Reminds me of Eok… Maybe he could have had a scrub in his head?

    • Ninty

Maybe not so scary but funny and challenging, and you don’t have to kill them in the end because it was just possessed or something. Maybe something like that would work

      • Mseevers95

If it was in a game that had the same mechanics as Minish Cap it would probably end up a lot like the Giant Octorock fight

        • Ninty

It doesn’t have to be in a game like Minish Cap. They could design a larger, more complex-looking Deku or Octorok (kinda like a giant squid) and make it work like that. or like what EOTW said where they’re controlling a huge mechanism.

    • Linkfan99

Before minish cap, I never would have thought of a ChuChu being a boss. I mean, a ChuChu? Really? But they pulled it off, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this happened.

      • Hello I am the ChuChu

Well, of course they did! My kind’s ferocity, as well as their intelligence and sensibility, have yet to be even touched upon in-game. The glorious ChuChu should be done for the next think like this!
        Please…

  • JeredenDonnar

the deku scrubs would be awesome if they returned! I think it would be awesome to see them on par with the zoras and gorons again; Forest, water and earth(fire). they sorta balnce them out, like kokiri and koroks did but to a greater extent. The koroks were adequete replaces for them as a people, but octoroks can’t replace them as enemies.

    • H37I

so pretty much like majora’s mask then, right?

    • Linkfan99

but the difference is, deku scrubs are enemies (sort of) whereas gorons, zoras, and most importantly, koroks, are passive.

      • Jojam

But Zoras used to be enemies…

        • Linkfan99

          true, good point…

          • Anonymous

Those weren’t Zoras they were Zolas. Which now that I think about it Zolas could be ancestors to Zoras. And yes they really should bring back Deku Scrubs!

          • Linkfan99

No, actually they had 2 names:

            Zolas OR River Zoras.

So technically they were zoras, the river variety.

Aw, these guys are so cute….OW!
GET BACK HERE I’M GOING TO KILL YOU!!!

My reaction to the Deku scrubs.

    • soulofstorms

      HA!

      • Linkfan99

        HA HA HA!

    • Dekuscrub2000

I argree here. First time i saw them was like : awww…, and them finish them cuz they annoyed me

  • FierceDeku

    I LOVE DEKU SCRUBS! :D

  • Ninty

Why can’t regions feature more than one race of beings? Maybe you could have the Kokiri AND the deku scrubs living with each other, among other combinations.

  • IMFWeirdo

I just think the name sounds kind of funny/catchy: Deku Scrub. I mean… just the word, Scrub. Lol XD
And I agree, they’re a very interesting race. I love how unique Zelda is, I mean, all the other fantasy genres stick with the old Lord of the Rings races (elves, dwarves, giants, wizards, etc), and here’s Nintendo creating weird and infinitely more colorful/unique trademark races.

  • Roth

I always thought the Deku were invented to replace the Octorocks in 3D and give them some character, so that the latter could remain a mindless enemy and be relegated to the water in place of River Zoras, in turn because the new Sea Zoras were totally different and benevolent. (See what happens when you change the established nature of a race? You have to shift everything over and invent a whole new one to fill in the gaps.) Anyhow, why SS would suddenly go put Octorocks back on land and UNDER BUSHES is a mystery to me. I miss the Deku!

    • Ninty

Well, I guess it’s ’cause of the way they treated Faron Woods when it gets flooded? I don’t think there were places where water octoroks would’ve worked really in SS.

one thing: deku palace theme. q

  • Zora_Twilight

I wish that Skyward Sword didn’t invent new races because I’m really fond of the Gorons, Zoras, and Deku Scrubs. Were they trying to imply that the races in Skyward were ancestors of the others? (except for the Gorons) What confuses me is how there are a few Gorons but three entirely new races. What were the game makers trying to do there?

  • melonlord

i agree with you jeredendonnar they should bring back the zoras and gorons i miss them soo much :[

    • Linkfan99

What do you mean “bring back the gorons”? The past 4 games have had them!
and, if you want to reply to someone, click “reply” below their comment instead of posting another comment way down on the page.

      • H37I

actually, they have been around since ocarina of time. not sure if four swords featured any though, i haven’t played that one yet.

        • Linkfan99

yes, but they took them away for several games (maybe the Oracles, definitely for the Wind Waker, maybe the four swords games, and definitely for Minish Cap.) I just didn’t understand what melonlord meant when he said, “bring back the Gorons” as they have been “back” for 4 games now.

          • H37I

they haven’t been gone though. they had a region for them in both oracle games, sailing goron merchants in wind waker. four swords, again, is the only one i’m not sure of. minish cap has an entire sidequest based on them.

          • Linkfan99

Well, again, I haven’t played four swords or the oracles, and sorry, the wind waker one totally slipped my mind, and in minish cap, I wasn’t counting the Biggoron, plus I kind of forgot about him.

in the next zelda there has to be a giant deku boss

Yeah, those Day Crew Scrubs really did a number on the kokiri after the Xorax outbreak.

    • H37I

and your last, if you don’t sing that (somehow) to the tune of deku palace!

      • itsameluigi1290

Eh, it was a stupid comment anyways. I don’t sing, I guess because I’m too shy or something.

        • H37I

pff, my comment was stupid too. i wasn’t being serious.

          • itsameluigi1290

            Mine was stupider.
            So HA!

          • H37I

            O RLY?!
Seven retards on go-karts got a tree pregnant thus giving birth to the theory of a flying quesadilla destroying a broken watch.

          • itsameluigi1290

            Okay, that’s hilarious.

  • Cinnamon

To me, the Deku Scrubs have always been one of the trademarks of Zelda. I’d love to see them return!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-Best/100003863840372 James Best

    Bring back the Deku Scrub!

  • Link Fanatic

I love them, they’re cute. ^.^ And, I mean, I agree, they are very interesting creatures….

  • TwilightMirror11

Deku Scrubs would destroy Octorocks! At least they were smart enough to form speech and civilization.

  • faror

i like all the little deku scrubs from the forest stage. i happen to fall in that hole while wearing the keaton mask… i lost so many hearts.

  • Neutopia

I think we’ll definitely be seeing the Deku Scrubs again aha, there is no way they wouldn’t put them in again, and yes I think they are a great addition to the Zelda universe! :P

  • Amber Evans

I always hated going near plants in SS b/c there was a chance it was a deku scrub, they are just plain annoying. Why cant the seed just bounce off your shield like in Oot or MM, but you have to forcefully bunt your shield to make the seed hit them back.

  • Matthew Capon

    dont like ‘em
