Hyrule Historia: Zelda Timeline To Potentially Be Revealed?

MasesDecember 18th, 2011 by Mases

A few days back we reported on a book entitled Hyrule Historia that is set for release on December 21st. The book is being published by Shogakukan, the official publisher for Nintendo of Japan. Recently, a member over at the GameFAQs Forums has translated the table of contents of this book and has discovered somewhat of a secret. Deciphering the translation, it appears that the long sought out Legend of Zelda Timeline will be revealed. You can find the translated table of contents below.

“History of Hyrule
~Finally Revealed, The Genealogy of the [Legend]~
The Timeline of Hyrule, Kingdom of the Gods………………………………… 68
The Legend of Gods and the Hero of Time…………………………………………… 70
The Downfall of Hyrule and the Last Hero………………………………………… 92
The Twilight Realm and the Hero’s Descendant……………………………… 110
The Hero of Wind and the New World………………………………………………………… 122

Judging strictly based on this table of contents, some bloggers online have speculated that this will be a full reveal of the Legend of Zelda Timeline. Roger DiLuigi III over at VGTribune.com is one of these folks and claims to have known about this publications release for some time now. Here is what he had to say.

I’ve actually known about this for a little while now so I’m extremely happy that I can finally report on this. Zelda fanboys, your prayers to Hylia are finally going to be answered. After 25 years of speculation, Nintendo is finally going to be revealing the official timeline to the Legend of Zelda series next Wednesday. The timeline will be published in Hyrule Historia, the 25th anniversary collector’s book that chronicles the history of the Zelda series.

From the research that I’ve done, all of this speculation goes back to the translation at the GameFAQs forum. There doesn’t seem to be anymore additional evidence, but just a whole lot of speculation. Just looking at the table of contents shown in that upcoming book, it seems clearly that there is going to be some chronological story being told. However, I feel that it’s jumping the gun to take what is given in that translation and make the step towards a Zelda Timeline being revealed. What I personally think this is, is a textual storyline collection of some of the stories in the Legend of Zelda series. It certainly is set in a chronological order of games that have long since been confirmed. Let’s break it up by chapter.

The Timeline of Hyrule, Kingdom of the Gods
Considering this section is all of two pages, I’m under the presumption that this is going to be a very brief introduction to the Zelda storyline as a whole.

The Legend of Gods and the Hero of Time
At first glance, I thought The Legend of Gods was referring to the creation stories that we know from both A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time. Given this book is released in such close proximity to the release of Skyward Sword, I wasn’t sure if Skyward Sword’s storyline was even going to be included. However, after realizing that Skyward Sword artwork is going to be featured in this booklet, the storyline of Skyward Sword should surely be found in here as well. Looking at it from this angle, The Legend of Gods could certainly be referring to the Goddess story of the long struggle between Hylia and Demise. The Hero of Time is clearly a reference to Link from Ocarina of Time, so this chapter will certainly cover both the back-story and in-game story from Ocarina of Time. I imagine the events of Majora’s Mask could be told just after Ocarina of Time, as that is a confirmed sequel to one of the two endings in Ocarina of Time.

The Downfall of Hyrule and the Last Hero
This one isn’t as crystal clear as the rest of the chapters, but my hunch is that this relates to the events of the first three Zelda titles. The Downfall of Hyrule to me is in reference to the crumbling of Hyrule during the events of A Link to the Past. Aghanim cons his way into power, dethrones the King of Hyrule, and banishes the seven maidens to the Dark World. The Dark World in turn is the corrupted form of Light World, which is also known as The Golden Land. To me, the title Downfall of Hyrule makes sense to talk about the events of A Link to the Past.

The Last Hero is also a tadbit unclear, but I feel that this is in reference to the original Link from The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. A Link to the Past was a confirmed prequel to the original two Legend of Zelda titles from the NES when it first released. Subsequently, we currently have no confirmed knowledge of any connected game that takes place after the events of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Since it was the same Link in the first two Zelda titles and since there is no known game that takes place after these titles, The Last Hero seems to be a fitting title for this chapter.

The Twilight Realm and the Hero’s Descendant
This section clearly refers to Twilight Princess, so I imagine this chapter will talk extensively about the back-story, the in-game, cut-scenes, and how it connects with Ocarina of Time. The Hero’s Descendant could potentially mean that the Link from Twilight Princess is a descendant of the Link from Ocarina of Time. It could also refer to a Link from a Zelda title that occurs AFTER Twilight Princess. This is a bit unclear, but perhaps I’m just reading too far into it.

The Hero of Wind and the New World
This clearly refers to the events of The Wind Waker, as Link becomes known as the Hero of Wind by the games conclusion. The New World refers to the events of Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, where Link and Zelda set off to search for a new Hyrule, and in Spirit Tracks that new land is featured extensively.

So that’s a breakdown of the chapters, at least in my opinion. However, even my breakdown leaves out a number of titles. Most notably, The Minish Cap, Four Swords, and Four Swords Adventures are not mentioned at all. While I also didn’t mention Link’s Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, and Oracle of Ages, it very likely could be true that those particular titles fall in the Downfall of Hyrule chapter, given their established connections to A Link to the Past. However, even those games could be left out entirely as well.

However, the main point I want to drive home here… is that nothing in my breakdown would be new at all. I feel I’ve connected most the dots and while obviously there is tons of speculation here, I just don’t see any reason to think that a complete timeline is going to be revealed. In fact, I don’t think anything new at all is going to be revealed in this book. It’s just going to be a restating of the Zelda history that we already know.

Eiji Aonuma has been adamant about NOT revealing a completed Zelda Timeline and many Nintendo representatives have echoed this viewpoint over the years. To me this would be way out of character and would be a complete 180 of what they’ve repeatedly said. It just doesn’t seem like something Nintendo would do and I have confidence that this won’t happen.

So what are your thoughts on the Hyrule Historia book coming out in just a few days? Do you think the Zelda Timeline is going to be revealed? Is this just a collection of the stories from the Zelda series? Perhaps something I’m completely missing. Sound off in the comments below.

Nintendo, Please don't. I want to keep speculatingQ

Why do I get the feeling that this is never going to be released in the US. I mean look at the Hyrule Symphony, an amazing orchestration released only in Japan(where it wasn't very popular), and the second it was released on YouTube, it got over 335,799 views (and that is just for one track). Now imagine if there was an official CD released in the West. That would have fetched quite the bit of revenue, and yet did they ever do it? Of course not! I mean ,why give something that the majority of the fanbase wants, right? I have the sinking feeling that we are once again going to get the cold shoulder on this one.

  • triforce snacher

did anyone see the miamoto cartoon with him killing the person who found out the timeline, guess whats going to happen wednesday night when we are all asleep

    sleep well rea- ahhhhh………………………………………..

  • willsy

good it will end the speculating and ridiculous theories

  • I know this is off topic but I started playing Twilight Princess again (for the 10 time) and I just realized that when you talk to Shad he talks of Skyloft and the people who lived there and it kind of makes sence because how could an Occa make cannons and a city and have bombs and arrows when they don't have hands. Did anybody else think that or is it just me.

    • yamcha626

      Wrong city in the sky.

  • TowerofHera

Wow… Are they really going to do it?

  • GaroMaster

I bet I have a better name for it: THE BIBLE OF ZELDA!!! (cue angelic singers)

  • Caleb Reks

This is the SECOND time I've made a video and the day after discovered a little news post kindly shoving my entire point to the side. Interestingly, both were about Zelda (the first was about Operation Moonfall).

Then again, we have to wait and see what this timeline truly entails. I kind of get the feeling this will give a partial timeline–confirm certain connections and debunk certain theories–but not include all the games. Then again, "the Hero's Descendant" sounds like it could refer to any or all of the 2D games, so who knows?

  • fused_shadows

This book clearly will state everything we already know. SS comes before OoT, WW is a prequel to PH, which is a prequel to ST. Zelda 1 comes after Zelda 2. Nothing new here.

  • joh

So is there a reason to buy the book when we can go on Zelda Wiki for free? It would seem pointless to buy this if it does not reveal anything new.

  • ganonlord

I don't think this will reveal anything new. Just the parts of the timeline we already know. No 2D games. Well, I guess we'll know the answer to this by Wednesday, but giving what Nintendo has made VERY clear this year we will not get the entire timeline. Even if it reveals the locations of the classic games, we still have the Capcom games.

  • SkywardStriker

Does anyone know if the Four Swords game on the 3DS and DSi is Four Swords or Four Swords Adventures?

  • SkywardStriker

BTW Its Super Dynamic Cooking Time!!!

  • SkywardStriker

I honestly don't understand how anyone could actually put The First and Second games into a timeline. They really have no story in them. All it is is you have to save Princess Zelda and Hyrule.

  • NintendoCoke

I really hope they don't reveal the full timeline. After all, who doesn't love theorizing? But MABYE, if Zelda ever ends, they can release a timeline.

    Also….
    RELEASE THIS IN THE U.S.A.!

  • Metalman

NOOOO no more goddess stuff, thats the only part where Skyward Sword messed up on. i grew up in a land where Farore, Nayru and Din were the goddess', you cant just introduce a new one out of no where. i'm hoping Hylia was just a princess like Zelda, and maybe people saw her as a goddess because she had magic, or something, just not a new goddess

    • Kale46n2

I agree with that completely. I think you're probably onto something there, or I'm hoping so anyway.

      • 67ghost

all Zeldas are hylia . hylia and Zelda are one and the same

  • triforce snacher

i want to make a point why is everyone including myself getting thumbed down for perfectly fine comments i thought that this was a nice place to comment but based on some peoples reactions to comments i now no longer know

  • Kale46n2

Personally I want to continue speculating… besides, given everything that they've ever said about revealing the timeline and how that would hinder their ability to alter it as they go when need be, I don't think this will be what we're hoping for. REGARDLESS, I WANT THIS BOOK. This looks absolutely amazing. If they translate and sell it in America, so much the better, but I'm living in Japan right now anyway. Has anyone heard anything in regards to what Japanese retail locations will actually be selling this?

  • Opti

Why are almost all the comments here randomly given thumbs down? I smell a troll.

  • http://twitter.com/MagicalRamen @MagicalRamen

I guess it sorta makes sense the Capcom games are left out…I think it would be nice with having a few things being explained but not everything.

  • Tektite

I seriously doubt that they are going to be revealing anything like the time line theory and I agree with you Mases, it's probably just a collection of stuff we've already been told. If this sells in Canada I will totally buy it. :P
