Curiosity Shop #037: Zelda Dungeon Mailbag

Axle the BeastNovember 25th, 2010 by Axle the Beast

Curiosity ShopAlright guys, got the mailbag! Alas, this is the final Majora’s Mask Month mailbag. Of course it only has questions about Majora’s Mask (there’s 13 of them), but this will be the last one like that sadly. But that was fun wasn’t it? Be sure to send me questions that aren’t about Majora’s Mask again, although we don’t want to cut Majora’s Mask out entirely!

Questions and timestamps:

(00:25) – If it’s the same Happy Mask Salesman in Majora’s Mask and Ocarina of Time, is it the same Link too?
(00:42) – What is your favorite song in Majora’s Mask?
(01:19) – Which features of Majora’s Mask would you like to see refined and reappear in a remake or a new game like Skyward Sword?
(03:09) – Why do you think they chose the Deku for Majora’s Mask instead of the Kokiri? Also, why do you think there’s never been another Deku area, and which race fits the forest best?
(04:58) – I cannot complete the Anju and Kafei sidequest. Anju keeps saying there are no reservations. What am I doing wrong?
(05:37) – Do you think Keaton in Majora’s Mask has anything to do with Pikachu from Pokemon?
(06:32) – What do you think is the most frustrating part of Majora’s Mask?
(07:18) – If it’s the same Skull Kid in Majora’s Mask, can the Skull Kid travel between Hyrule and Termina freely?
(08:25) – How do you think the Happy Mask Salesman acquired Majora’s Mask if its origins are in another dimension?
(09:15) – Do you think Stone Tower Temple is parallel to a place in Hyrule?
(10:06) – Do you think time really goes backward when you play the Song of Time in Majora’s Mask? You don’t lose all of your important items and in Ocarina of Time it only moved those blocks.
(11:20) – Do you think Termina will appear in a future Zelda game, or only in Majora’s Mask?
(12:04) – What do you think is the main aspect that made Majora’s Mask what it is?

Be sure to send your questions as well as your name/username to xx5terrorlord@earthlink.net for next week’s mailbag!

Can you guess the sound, the quote, or any of the music? And how about your opinions? In general of course, but in particular, what’s your favorite song in Majora’s Mask? Which features would you like to see again, and which ones made Majora’s Mask what it was? Do you think the Deku or the Kokiri fit the forest better? Most frustrating part of the game? Tell me in the comments!

    Nice, new mailbag.

  • Twiliwolf

link and the happymask salesman are the same characters from OOT. They said it around the begging of MM.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Thareous Thareous

Questions I'd like to answer for myself:

*If its the OoT Skull Kid, can he go between Hyrule and Termina at will?* Yes, I believe it was him, based on the fact that he said you smelled familiar at the end of MM. Having lived in the Lost Woods all his life (or at least for a long time), I imagine he stumbled upon the Terminan portal one day and decided to go in it. And he visited the place often, until he saw the Salesman, then took Majora's Mask.

*Will Termina appear in a future game?* As long as the areas are different and the characters have been changed. I don't want it to pretty much be a rerun of Majora's Mask (kinda like TP with OoT).

*What is the main aspect that made MM what it is?* First off, I should say it's the maturity of the game–not graphic violence, a deep look into mind of a psychopath (Majora, not the Skull Kid). And the main aspect for me has to be the conflict set before Link, which differs LoZ from other games. Without that element, everything would just be bland.

    • Zack

I got a question to ask about your second answer.

Are you really implying that TP was a rerun to OoT? What made it more of a rerun than OoT to ALttP?

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Thareous Thareous

I actually haven't played ALttP yet, though I hear it's supposed to be really good–the best of the games before Ocarina of Time. That's probably the next one I look forward to trying out…besides Skyward Sword. 8D

        • JuicieJ

It was definately a sequel to Ocarina of Time.

  • Linksister82

My favorite song in MM was probably the one that plays in the astral labratory in clock town. so pretty.

    • Arcobaleno

Yeah That one is great, but I prefer the Song of Healing or the Stone Tower Temple

    • VikzeLink

The astral laboratory is actually outside clocktown, in Termina field

      • Linksister82

I know but the way to get there is through the Bombers Secret Club Entrance in Clock Town.

  • http://tylorlilley.com TheTylor

Thanks for answering my question. I think I agree with you; what you said about the Kokiri being the more "mystical" people while the deku are the more "normal", makes sense, and you explain your points well. Thanks!

  • VikzeLink

Nice vid as always… BTW video length is elite^^

  • _Kego_

First off, happy Thanksgiving! It's snowing where I live…
    Sound: Clock Tower bell
Quote: Um… Not sure, I haven't gotten into the Ikana dungeons. Maybe one of Igos du Ikana's soldiers?
Music: Curiosity Shop, clearing an event (I think), Kamaro/Rosa Twin's song, Frog Choir song, meeting Kafei (I think), "Them" theme, last 6 hours, Call to Order, idk (I don't think I've gotten far enough to have heard it), Majora's Wrath battle, Majora's Mask battle, Ending Theme. I probably got a few wrong, I haven't beaten the game yet…
(00:25) – That's sorta a pointless question, because 1: he still has the Kokiri Sword, 2: he has the Ocarina of time, 3: the Zelda he knows is identical to OoT's, 4: he remembers the songs from OoT when he's "taught" them, 5: he has Epona, 6: he appears to have been looking for Navi, 7: the Skull Kid remembers him from OoT, and 8: the game states it.
(00:42) – Ocarina song: Either the Song of Time and its variants or the Song of Storms
BG song: Clock town on the final day or the Deku Palace
(01:19) – Hm… I'd like it if there were deeper characters that you actually felt like you knew, but that might not work.
(03:09) – It probably would have been weird to have the Kokiri appear. The Hylian Deku are less civilized than their Terminian counterparts, so that wouldn't work. Both fit the forest well, but I think the Deku are more forest-esque (they ARE plants, after all).
(04:58) – Don't talk to her until AFTER she gets the letter from Kafei. You don't need the reservation unless you want to see a certain event and get 100 rupees, neither of which are required for completion.
(05:37) – It was probably just a cameo in OoT, but then they made it into a reference to a Kitsune (but that might have been their intent in OoT, too).
(06:32) – Getting into Snowhead. It wastes time after a while. Also Sakon's defense mechanism if you don't know exactly how to do it, because then you'll mess up and have to restart THE WHOLE FREAKIN' SIDEQUEST.
    (07:18) – It's very likely.
(08:25) – He can go between the two.
(09:15) – Maybe the Temple of Time or the Stone Colossus?
(10:06) – Yes, because everything else resets (NPC's memories). The Goddess of Time (Nayru?) helps him. Or, from a gameplay perspective, you'd get really pissed off if you had to get every single item every time you went back to the first day.
(11:20) – If it did, they'd have to change the landscape a bit and give it more advanced technology.
(12:04) – I'd have to say either the characters or the atmosphere. Both sorta contributed to each other.

    • _Kego_

      Wow, that was long…

    • _Kego_

Sorry, I meant Oath to Order (it won't let me edit it…)

      • JuicieJ

        You can't edit if there's a reply.

        • _Kego_

          Okay, didn't know that. Thanks.

          • JuicieJ

            =)

  • linsey

hey if the great sea is hyrule after it was flooded do you think the world of the ocean king is termina since the world of the ocean king was an alternate world to the great sea and termina was alternate to hyrule?
i dunno its just one of my theorys…

    • _Kego_

Send him an e-mail if you want an answer.

      • linsey

i would email him but i dont know how so…
can somone else do it for me?

        • linsey

wait… on second thought im not gonna bother askin someone

    • JuicieJ

Good question. Send it in for next week. Do it on like Sunday or Monday, though. He makes the video's pretty much the day before.

  • JuicieJ

Opening sound: the clock in Clock Town.
Quote: One of my favorites. The two Stalfos kinda things from the Great Ikana Palace, or something like that.
One of the music tracks: the frog choir. (I know all of them, but I don't want to name them all.)

    1.) Yeah. I just knew Axle's answer. It's signature.
2.) Stone Tower as well. Oath to Order would be the other. And the Sonata of Awakening.
3.) The sidequest aspects. Not the same, but the aspects. And the characters having more purpose. The Twilight Princess town people are useless.
4.) The Kokiri weren't really needed in Majora's Mask. Bascially, what Axle said. Anyway, I like the Deku better. They're epic.
5.) You have to come to her with the Kafei mask after getting the letter from the Postman. Not before, or it's screwed.
6.) Huh. I'd never actually thought of that. Keaton is a very strange character. I don't know.
7.) I had a guidebook. Not really many frustrating parts. Unless you count having to go back in time all the time. But, I don't hate that idea.
8.) I've thought the same things. And thought the same things that Axle said. (Dang, we think somewhat alike.)
9.) He's a strange character. He said he could feel the dark power of Majora's Mask when he found it, by the way. He never said that he could "handle it."
10.) I don't know. But I think the Triforce appearing was just a cameo.
11.) No. I don't think they'd be mean to Link. Funny thought though. Yeah, anyway, losing the basic items make sense, but losing the important stuff, including Duneon Maps and such, would make it too tough.
    12.) I don't think that's necessary. It was just a fun one-time thing.
13.) CRAP! I forgot to tell my e-mail address!! Oh, well. Thanks for your input, Axle. Great answer. Makes perfect sense.

    • JuicieJ

By the way, Happy Thanksgiving, Axle! And to all.

      • AxletheBeast

Thanks! ^_^ Same to you, even if I'm late.

  • Retsdob

Majora's Mask was a rushed game. They had eighteen months to complete it. I believe that this explains a lot about it, like the way they used the same character designs. It also explains the 3 day cylcle, the difficulty, and the saving technique. What better a way to make a game seem longer then to make it more difficult, make you play the same three days multiple times, and make it difficult to save at a certaion point so often you had to do things over. It also explains the concentraitons on side-quests….as we all know there weren't very many dungeons in Majora's mask and I'm going out on a limb here and saying that dungeon's are quite a bit more difficult to create than side quest because of the intensity and handling of the puzzle's and structure, compared to a side-quest's build on the already created overworld.

    • Retsdob

Forgive my choppy writing, I just woke up.

  • _Kego_

Really, trolls? You couldn't leave the scores alone on a holiday? Whatever…

    • JuicieJ

      What?

      • _Kego_

Everyone's comments got thumbs-downed. You'd think that they'd leave us alone on Thanksgiving… Ah well, It's not the end of the world.

  • MM hater

The Skull Kid should have stayed in Hyrule. Then he wouldn't have stolen the MM, gone around saying "It's mine Precious!", and menaced Termina. Yecch, I really hate enemies you can't purge with Light Arrows.

    • Ryan

And then we wouldn't have the epic game called "Majora's Mask."

      • JuicieJ

Dude, are you still pissed about the Skull Kid/Light Arrows thing? You know, it should have been pretty obvious that wasn't what you were supposed to do.

        • _Kego_

Actually, I remember pointing that out when this whole debacle started, back before I even had an account… I'll see if I can find it.

          • _Kego_

            Found it!
"'I DO hate Majora's Mask, 'cause that stupid Skull Kid kept tauntin' me when I hit it with a Light Arrow. A Light Arrow! How come it will hurt Ganondork and not that ditz!?!'
has it never occurred to you that they were different versions of the light arrow? and that you aren't supposed to use the light arrow for that? and what is a souie-swine?"

    • _Kego_

I know you won't pay attention to this, but the Skull Kid is not an enemy. He's just a mischievous imp who had the misfortune of putting on an evil mask which slowly took him over.

      • JuicieJ

I know, right? I mean, being mad at that is like being mad that you can't shoot Tatl with a Light Arrow (although that might be fun). The reason it doesn't do anything is because the normal arrows don't hurt him, as they were designed to bounce off of Majora's Mask (on Skull Kid), so all the variations of the Arrow bounce off as well.

        • Andy

Don't know about Tatl, But I'd like to shot Navi with a light arrow. XP

  • JuicieJ

Wait, what's with the pumpkin on the TV in the background? Shouldn't it be a turkey, or something?

  • VikzeLink

You've all got it wrong (even Axle)! You can start the Kafei quest by equiping the kafei mask and talking to Anju after she gets the letter, but it doesn't matter if you had spoken to her before.
BUT! If you want the key so that u can get into the Stock pot inn after 20:00 you must not talk to her until after 12:59. From 13:00 you got the time to get the key until the goron with the same name as you tries to get it. If he does before you, you can't get it.

Also, the key isn't needed as you can fly to the balcony with the deku flower and that door is never locked.

    • _Kego_

Or, if you're too lazy, go stand on the balcony right before closing time and go in after 20:00. I prefer the method you mentioned, though, because you can wander around town without worrying about getting back to the inn and going on the balcony in time.

    • JuicieJ

Actually, you're the wrong one. If you go to her with Kafei's Mask on before she gets the letter, she just says, "Oh…you are also looking for Kafei." Nothing more. She doesn't react until she gets the letter. If you talked to her before *without* Kafei's Mask, even if you go up to her after she gets the letter while wearing Kafei's Mask, I think she says the same thing, but doesn't ask you to meet her at 11:30 (although she gets there at 12:00.) That I know for sure. Besides, you can't even get the key to the Knife Chamber until after she gets the letter (although you're right about the Deku Flower thing.) Get your facts straight before telling people they're wrong.

  • Oracle_Link

I've always thought the whole doomsday feeling combined with the NPC interaction was what really made Majora's Mask what it was. Without it, the NPC interaction wouldn't have mattered as much because the whole point of you getting to know the characters was to actually want to stop the moon to save THEM. It wasn't about saving the land like every time Link goes against Ganondorf, it was actually about saving the people of the land, which is what made the game compelling. And the countdown of the three day cycle gets the adrenaline going toward the end because you know the world's about to end. That feeling has never been replicated in any other Zelda, which is Majora's Mask is so great.

    • JuicieJ

      Well said.

  • JuicieJ

No, it's the Kokiri Sword. It says so specifically in the menu and the guidebooks. They just gave it a different hilt for some reason.

  • _Kego_

The sword's the same but with a new hilt (idk why), but the shield appears to be a more "kid-friendly" version of the Hylian shield.

  • DARK MASTER

    Nice job…………………?

    • JuicieJ

      What's with the question mark?

Okay, so keeton isn't based on pikachu. But, there is a pokemon based on ktsune( if tht's how you spell it) like keeton. You could probably, if you didn't notice without the video, see and hear him say it is a mythical NINE-TAILED FOX……..nine tails? ……ninetales…..see?

    • coshmolocho

      I failed when spelling that's….. <:*(

  • WannaBNavi

OH! and i love axle's 1st answer "(pauses, looks around) yes."

  • Kevlar

    Ninetails is actually a Pokemon.

    • AxletheBeast

Aware, but the Pokemon is a direct copy of the Kitsune mythical creature.

You really make it seem really easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually one thing which I think I would never understand. It kind of feels too complex and extremely extensive for me. I am taking a look ahead in your subsequent submit, I will try to get the cling of it!
