Featured Thread: Pegasus and the Ability to Fly

PegasusLate last year, Eiji Aonuma hinted at the possibility that a flying mechanic might be in store for the next Legend of Zelda title. The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass featured a boat, while Spirit Tracks took the next technological step forward by introducing a train. The ability to fly has been tossed around and speculated by fans alike. Many Zelda fans welcome the idea, while others frown at technological advancements and modernization.

When it comes to flying, I really welcome the idea, but the idea of the technological advancement scares me. Instead of using a hot-air balloon or a primitive type of airplane, why not go the route of magic. Link has had a trusty horse in Epona that has allowed him to cross the plains rather quickly, but why not take it a step further and give Epona wings and the ability to fly? The picture you see to the left is of Pegasus, a Greek mythological stallion that had wings and the ability to fly. Would including such a concept in the Legend of Zelda series be too radical? Heck, they’ve already used the term Pegasus when naming the Pegasus Boots back in A Link to the Past, which gave Link the ability to dash quickly across the land. I think if Nintendo does choose the route of flight, this method is far superior then any technological advancement.

A thread about Link being able to fly has been made over at our Zelda Wii forum. Feel free to head on over to our forum community and register to take part in the discussion. Let us know what you think about the possibility of giving Epona the ability to fly.

I believe flying would be fantastic, and it wouldn't necessarily ruin exploration, in fact, it could give even more chances for exploring, as long as you get the ability towards the end of the game when you've already traversed at least the majority of Hyrule (or whatever land is featured) by foot.

  • yes! I can seriously imagine that.

Maybe they should have a flying ship just like in final fantasy. Their is no need for airplanes; you can also have a pegasus of griffin. The mideaval civilizations didn't have sich advanced flying technology. In the Spirit Tracks, Beedle had a hot air ballon. Why don't they give Link one in Zelda Wii?

    That's a good idea!!

Look, I don't want to hurt your feelings Epona fans, but I think it would be incredibly stupid to give Epona wings. I mean, it would be way too cheap! Maybe only to travel place to place, but then what would happen to the whole warping idea? Think about it.

  • @lexMM says:

Yes, but I still like the idea with the hot air balloon!

    Why not a dragon?

  • Murdok says:

Perhaps the problem of being able to fly anywhere from an early point in the game could be solved by still having the creature in the game from an early point, but limiting the altitude it can reach, so at first it can only jump a little, then it gets the ability to hover and as you progress through the game you get more upgrades for jumping and flying.

  • Murdok says:

Forget the griffins and phoenixes. I think pegasus might even be a bit of a weird one – I think if anything can fly, it should be a creature that's already appeared a few times in past Zelda games, like a dragon, hawk, or owl. If they add a new kind of creature AND new flight mechanics, it might alienate Zelda fans. And I know, you could say that the wolf in TP added a new creature along with new gameplay mechanics, but Wolf Link's gameplay was just like a mix between normal Link and riding on Epona.

  • Murdok says:

As for what the gameplay would be like, I don't think it should be too different from Epona's Twilight Princess gameplay – the targeting system should still be there and Link should be able to attack enemies like Kargaroks in the air with his sword, and shoot arrows at enemies on the land. The actual flight could be controlled by pointing in the direction you want to face with the remote (or just using the Z button to bring the camera right behind you), using the control stick to move, and pressing A or maybe shaking the remote to flap the creature's wings and gain altitude.

Guys, Guys, Guys…. simple all link needs is a Rito mask. He transforms into Rito link (like in majora's mask.)
Rito are the flying tribe from windwaker.
Link can be controlled by the same mechanics as the plane in Wii sports resort !
    No technological advancments
No need for the Pegasus replication
    No problem
