This listing below was found over at Official Nintendo Magazine and in my opinion is one of the worst Top 10 Zelda lists I have ever seen in my entire life. The listing was presumably based on what readers viewed as the best Zelda games of all time and as a hardcore Zelda fan, it just flat out makes me angry seeing this listing order. The miserable list can be seen below…
10. Oracle of Seasons/Ages
9. Phantom Hourglass
8. The Minish Cap
7. Spirit Tracks
6. A Link to the Past
5. Link’s Awakening
4. Majora’s Mask
3. The Wind Waker
2. Twilight Princess
1. Ocarina of Time
Where to begin… First off, why the heck is the Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages considered to be one game? The games are completely unique from one another with an added bonus being the ability to connect them for an additional combined ending. They are distinctive stand alone games that have unique storylines, take place in different lands, and their over-lining themes are dramatically different. It bothers me, borderline making me angry when they are seen as one game on a list like this. It is not like Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue, where the games were identical except for certain Pokemon in certain games. The Oracle titles were unique games and it’s an insult to combine them. Even so, if you actually do combine them… That makes sixteen dungeons, multiple overworlds in which you can travel through time, change the seasons, fight about a half a dozen major boss battles, and have one of the largest inventories in the entire series… Yet that is considered to be that low on the totem pole? Argh!
What else… Where the heck is the original Legend of Zelda? Discounting the Four Swords titles or any of the spin-offs, there are thirteen major single player Zelda titles. With them combining the Oracle titles into one, that makes 12 major Zelda titles. The two Zelda titles left off the list… The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. I understand Adventure of Link being left off, since in a voting environment, most Zelda fans would not place the game overly high. What about the original Legend of Zelda? Major gaming magazine Game Informer recently labeled the original Legend of Zelda as the #1 game on their Top 100 Games Of All Time, yet it cannot even make a TOP TEN list for best Zelda game? ARGH!!!
Lastly, numbers 1-4 on the list are the four 3d console Zelda titles. Okay sure, there are some people out there that might just be attracted to the 3d Zelda games, but in a combined listing like this, I think this is just a direct spit in the face to the handheld/2d console titles for them to have been pushed aside. It really is a travesty that all four 3d Zelda console titles made it near the top of the list. Having these four titles at the top is a grave injustice to the series as a whole and while they are great games, they really don’t give the big picture of what the Legend of Zelda series is all about.
Knowing that this was voted on and thus, it was a popularity contest in a way, makes me understand why the results are as they appear. I don’t think I’ve ever looked a list and just been so angry over what I saw. Have mainstream Zelda fans really boiled down to this? Where any 3d console Zelda titles is just superior to any handheld or 2d console title in the eyes of the masses? Do most gamers actually think the first two Zelda games that started the series cannot even make it into the top 10 Zelda titles of all time? If you are as frustrated about this list as I am, feel free to post in the comments below… but let’s withhold the urge of releasing any inappropriate language towards this… horrific list.

I think it's all wrong except for ocarina of time
no really there shoudn't be a top zelda list cause there are all really great game they their own personal styles
The 3D games would be just as good 2D but i think thay should remake the 2D games and turn them 3D so thay are easier to play second the hand held games would be just as goood non hand held so that eliminates that but this list in my eyes is wrong i agree with OoA and OoS should never have been put as the same but if thats how everone wants to put it like that fine. furthermore PH and WW are some of the worst ones ever made so i would take them out ST i havent played yet so i would have to take that out and the fourswords were not well build so i would take them out to. so useing only the ones i have left i would put it and i am being a bit lazy becase it is late ware i am so here my list goes
10.minish cap
9orical of ages
8 orical of seasons
7 Legend of zelda
6 links to the past
5 links awakening
4 the adventure of link
3 twilight princess
2 orcarina of time
1 majoras mask (i know it has lest to do with all the games but you get to be a demi god thats the best)
so thares my list it would be a LOT difrent if all the 2Ds were 3Ds dont hate me becase i like 3D beter
I don't know why be so angry about this list. It's all about different opinion and, while I do not agree with how the listing is presented, I don't see why get so upset about it. I myself haven't played any Zelda games before Ocarina of Time (I know, the shame), so I wouldn't be able to include the first games if I were to make a list.
Also, the first one on my list would have to be Majora's Mask
Honestly, I have no list. I find all the Zelda games great. I mean, yeah, I'd probably rate Spirit Tracks over Phantom Hourglass, and the only games I've beaten of my Zelda collection were PH, ST, and TP, but I still find them all just too good to decide between. And I realize that people can get passionate over their own choices, but please, they're all just opinions, so stop saying everyone else is "wrong" or has "a bad/the worst list". People have the right to think what they want; let them.
WIND WAKER DA BEST!!!!!!!!!! Also, GameInformers list was of the top 200 games, not 100
This is the order of the 6 six Zelda games I have played:
6. The Minish Cap
5. The Wind Waker
4. A Link to the Past
3. Majora's Mask
2. Ocarina of Time
1. Twilight Princess
To me, Twilight Princess was an amazing game, an I would love it if the Zelda Wii would be based of this game
Here is my list of games.(this is my opinion)
10.Legend of Zelda II.
9.Link's Awakening
8.Minish Cap
7.Spirit Tracks
6.Orcale of Ages
5.Twighlight Princess
4.Wind Waker
3.Majora's Mask
2.Legend of Zelda
1.Ocarina of Time
that is pretty cool.
The majority of people are shallow, and they always have been. You just didn't notice until poll results shed light on it. The main problem is that more people are playing video games now, so the tastes of the majority are beginning to affect what is considered desirable in gaming. That's unfortunate for those of us who don't share the tastes of the majority.
It's only a Top 10 list from a magazine . Who cares?
Personally, i agree with Griffin, everyone's going to have their own opinion. For instance, my favorite Zelda title is Ocarina of Time, due to the the fact that it has my favorite charactors, i love the Ocarina warp abillity, it has some of my all time favorite songs (e.g. The Lost Woods theme & the windmill song/ song of storms), and it was the first Zelda title i ever played. On the other hand, I have a friend who is also into zelda who's all time favorite title is Windwaker because of the art work (i'm not the biggest fan of toon link, but he's ok) and he like the charactors in Windwaker.
i think st and ph should be switched becasue st had limited movement, and ph introduced phantoms unlike in st where malidus totally copied bellum
yes but phantom hourglass had terrible controls, the boat was awful and the lazy "repeat the same dungeon every level" was tedious and boring, also Spirit tracks had a more interesting storyline MUCH better music more interesting bosses, and more fun Items as well as the phantom-zelda which i thought was brilliant the only thing i can give to phantom hourglass is some interesting boss battles and some nice secret islands but otherwise, its my least favorite game in the series (not including Zelda II)
Erm… If they're all good, what's the point of arguing it?
It's not as if they're saying the omissions are bad or anything, they're just saying they prefer the others slightly more. It's nothing to blow a fuse over. Sure, if they said "THE ORIGINAL LEGEND OF ZELDA SUCKS OLOL" then yeah, you can go to town on 'em, but they didn't.
To be fair, by today's standards the original The Legend of Zelda is simply a crap game. it's no surprise the 10 other games that have come out since the first two are better, they should be. They all have higher production value and a wider appeal in general.
That isn't to say The Legend of Zelda isn't important, or a bad game, but if you look at it in earnest almost every Zelda title released since has been superior. I know, Mases, you are IN LOVE with 2D Zelda and think the original is possibly the best ever, but realize not everyone shares those thoughts. Besides, it's a top 10 listing – why let it enrage you? Calling it the worst listing ever… really? If I had to guess, they most likely count FSA as it's own game, not a spin off. It it's own release (as it was actually released as it's own game, unlike Four Swords). In either case, it is perfectly logical to say The Legend of Zelda is not better then those 10/11 games.
As for the 43D ones being 1 – 4: In the eyes of the general gaming populace this seems to be the case, Those 4 games had the most mass appeal. So, is it wrong? Maybe a "core" Zelda player thinks so, but really the general populace I think would agree with that list, which doesn't make it the worst ever. Maybe we, as veterans, need to get over ourselves? It's a list. Why be upset? Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on what they like. I will comment now and then about something missing from a list, but I wont really go to town about it. It's not worth it. This top 10 listing is pretty unanimous with the general opinions of the entire series. What we represent, honestly, is a very TINY percentage of the people that actually play the games.
I completely agree with what you said! Todays' standards have completely redifined gaming.
they are right with ocarina of time being on top……but the rest is just junk. how do these people think that is true? i've only played spirit tracks and phantom hourglass and a little twilight princess……………but to be honest, they were great but i have nver played the others cuz i dont have the right system( no n64 or wii or nes or dx etc). anyhow, I think this list is too fake. even a complete idiot would know it is wrong!
Oh and not to be harsh on games I haven't played but some of them sound WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY suckish. So yeah. I am thinking this is a general agreement- the list SUCKS.
How can you judge any game you haven't played? I have played OOT, MM, WW, TP, ST, PH, ALttP, MC, and FSA and I don't think the list is wrong. I may not agree with a few of their choices, but people differ on opinions. Don't call others idiots, especially if they've played more games on the list than you, just because they don't agree with you.
Wrost. Zelda. Top ten. List. Ever
ok, first off how is A Link to the Past better than the OoT, the most favorite or "popular" Zelda Game there will probably ever be. I mean come on people, it was the first 3d zelda game released, which meant it wouldn't be as good as the WW or TP, so you got to cut the game some slack. The story line was very interesting and described more of the triforce, which was hardly explained at all in A Link to the Past. So here is my ratings
1. OoT
2. WW
3.TP
4.PH
5.Minish Cap
6.LoZ
7.A link to the past
8.Spirit Tracks
9. Oracle of seasons
10. Zelda II
I agree with the top four, at least. Handheld Zelda games, while I immesely enjoy, just don't feel like "real" games to me. I'm a television-screen gamer, I own only four handhelds and tons of 3D games. I'm not really into "old" games that much, like the first LoZ or or first Sonic games or whatever.
That being said, you can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time. Someone will always disagree. By whatever means they got this information, it was true for them, and I'm sure other's results might vary.
agreed. being a HUGE zelda fan my whole life (Mario is duuuuumb haha) i can say that this is truly a terrible, terrible, absolutely terrible list indeed. and since everyone else is doing it and im very opinionated heres my top 10. with some reasons too :O
1. LOZ-best Zelda ever. period.
2. Wind Waker-many innovative elements, my fave storyline, SO MANY SIDE QUESTS, etc. very underrated as being a tough competitor for that top spot
3. Link's Awakening-terrific game, one of the few that featured a land other than Hyrule, just a great game overall
4. OOT-first 3D Zelda, fantastic dungeons, great looking for the N64, etc.
5. OOS-great gameplay, loved the interactivity with OOA, different setting, innovative as well, etc.
I totally agree with you. Wind Waker was amazing.
6. OOA-same as above. I just liked OOS more because I like the Subrosians, Din, and Onox more than the Tokay, Nayru, and Veran
7. LTTP-great game, great storyline, innovative, etc. unusually low I know, but i feel ok putting it in 7th
8. MM-once again land other than Hyrule, so different from the usual Zelda design, the masks, ONI LINK (haha), SKULL KID/MAJORA
9. Minish Cap-I thoroughly enjoyed this title, best looking 2D Zelda, many sidequests as well, VAATI
10. tie between TP and Four Swords-I loved the darker atmosphere that TP had, i actually really enjoyed the Wolf Link playability, really enjoyed the storyline even if its mostly regurgitated OOT, etc. Four Swords is just too unique to leave out, first of the only two multiplayer Zeldas, loved the competition it created while still requiring teamwork, so much fun, VAATI AGAIN, etc.
really comfortable with that list there
to, not wo…. typo
I simply just can't believe any list that puts Phantom Hourglass above the Oracle titles. What is it, that the Oracle games were made by Capcom? That they weren't as popular as some of the other Zelda games? I'm seriously thinking that some of the people in this world who do reviews on Zelda games really haven't even fully played most of them. If they had, this list would look completely different.
First off, the Oracle games shouldn't be 10th. Give good ole Phantom Hourglass that spot, because it sucked. Minish Cap would have to come next, and that's mainly a personal opinion of mine more than a fact. I just didn't like Minish Cap. And Twilight Princess…. sigh…. Twilight Princess was NOT that good people. It was NOT a great game, and not a very good Zelda game. Yes, it was epic. Yes, it was nice when it first came out. But being that I bought my Wii at midnight on the release date, along with Twilight Princess, and haven't played it since I first beat it is a pretty good indication that its not a very good Zelda game. The Oracles are a better set of games than Twilight Princess. No, no… much less… Oracle of Ages is much better than Twilight Princess.
I'll end this "rant" here and just say that, for the most part, this list is about what I would expect from someone who is just reviewing the series. This list is absolutely no different than any other passer-by that would come and compile a list of the Zelda games. Fact is, this makes me think and them look like they haven't even played some, or most, of the Zelda games.
F-A-I-L
I agree with MrMosley
OOT and Wind Waker for the win!!!!!

11. LA from what I heard its an okay game.
12. ST it was too easy from what I've heard and I don't like the story.
