How would living your entire life on a peaceful island sound to you? Is it paradise or would you feel restricted, almost locked up in a cage. Hylian Dan of Zelda Universe has recently written an article entitled The Philosophy of The Wind Waker in which he looks at many of the themes of the game. As part one of a five part series, this article focuses on a lot of the individual characters that Link meets early on in his adventure.
We live in relation to islands and oceans. This is one of the key philosophical points of The Wind Waker. Islands represent comfort while oceans represent hardship. Many of the people who populate the Great Sea spend all their years within the confines of a single island, clinging to a personal little paradise. To them, the sea is too vast and dangerous and it is better and easier to remain at home.
Can life on Outset Island really be considered paradise? Link’s life on Outset Island is filled with simplicity, without much adventure and with only a few people to even interact with. Up until the start of the game he has lived his entire life on this island, never once exploring the world of the seas. Exactly what does Link do on a daily basis? The island is small, there is no room to even do much of anything in the outdoors, and the entire population of the island barely reaches the double digits. Hardly paradise and the comparisons to being locked up in prison seem to be very plausible.
One of Hylian Dan’s themes throughout the article is this idea of letting go of the past in order to reach a more exciting future. You need to leave what he considers paradise of living on an island, in exchange for living a life of adventure that opens endless opportunities. How I see it, leaving the island is a sign of breaking out of the chains that kept you there, and starting a search for a real paradise.
Part 2 of the article is scheduled for release next Sunday, March 14th.
Well, I would consider any sunny island like outside like Outset paradise. Sure, it's confined, and sometimes it might get boring there, but I'm sure you can train to be a swordsman (hint-hint). Otherwise, enjoy a life of luxury and sunbathing on the beach with a tall glass of lemonade at your side. There still might be the occasionall chores at home, but who could resist as small island paradise?
Wow nice explination but I would have to disagree. Looking back in Zelda's previous games she's in dark places but now all of a sudden it's sunny??????????? Come on I mean who ever envited this game needs to notice change is not what we need. Don't you agree Ezlo? They've been making these games over thousands of years and have done a great job why change it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So listen to your comment again Ezlo a think about what I just told you.
Hmm… This reminds me of that: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7...
Look at the chaotic part on the right. In between the chaos are some rather regular places. Interestingly, they are called "Islands of order". But the most interesting part about those plots is the chaos
(It's not the most interesting image in the world, on an artistic point of view but it is great in just describing that philosophy)
However, it's rather all about the balance between order and chaos. There, the most interesting images emerge:

As mathematical and very off any reality this might seem, it really describes the balance between order and chaos or the "golden middle" rather well
It's like Tetra being kidnapped by te Helmarok King was a signal for link to leave, or something.
to be honest, that article looks pretty lame.
well, there are some fun things to do- swords man training, studing on moving around and what your buttons do, eating soup, swimming, walking through the woods before their curse, riding on bettle's boat, looking out at sea from the watchtower, using arial's telescope, possibly, mabey, just quite getting a peice of heart and triforce chart if you can climb rock walls and got the hero's sword, a triforce peice if you could dive, and if you 'beat your life' the DX camera to take colored pictures of friends and faimly and then grow up to be a respected photographist
wait! how does anyone live on this island in the first place? you'd have to eat the pigs (which they do) but then they only have one and the how does breeding to get more food work then? you could eat sea gulls forever and that would get boring. they seemed to have NO crops so how does 'grandma' make soup? the worst is that they dont seem to have any fishing supplies OR food besides pears and all purpose bait on the shop ship. they'd all be dead by now.
You got to remember that this is a game and is not meant to compare it to real life!!!!!
there are millons of thing to do on a island like outset. you can swim, look out at the sea, play with the seagulls , train to use a sword, plus the kids on out set seem to look up to link, link could also play with ayurl, or walk through the woods, and in the intro link is staring out at the sea on a summit. He proubly has to help with chores some time.
um how day stay alive i dont c any food dere but i would want 2 jump off da bridge
Oh yher he could also go out and catch those funny purple crabs. Anyone tried crabbing cus it definately passes the time away. Has anyone also noticed that every cell shaded zelda starts with link being lazy and sleeping then getting woken up by some idiot wanting to send him off on some dumb errand. Sitting on an island like that all my life i would probably sleep most of the time.
