10 Games of the 90s That Have Aged Well

The guys over at The Kartel have put together a list of their top 10 games from the 90′s that have aged quite well. Most of the games are from the Super Nintendo era and we even got one Zelda title on the list; A Link to the Past. This is what they had to say about the Zelda classic.

This game perfected the dungeon-adventure-RPG formula. Taking lessons learned from its previous iterations and adding in new features and abilities to keep things fresh. This entry into the series saw the birth of many features now commonplace in the franchise. The introduction of a “Dark World”, Link could travel to at any point added new depth to puzzle solving along with the design of multi-level dungeons.

New items like the Master Sword, Heart Pieces, the Hook Shot, Pegasus Boots, and the ever popular Spin Attack technique all came from this game. The staples of the franchise today can find their roots in a Link to the Past, which not only created them, but implemented them in unique ways that are still copied and used in the latest Zelda games.

Check out the full listing over at The Kartel.

While I can't possibly argue that Link to the Past and Super Mario World have aged very well, and in fact are still played regularly by fans and are active choices in the Modding community… I have to say I think that list is a bit on the faulty. It sounds like the writer just picked his 10 favourite games and went with it, which is fair, but also a bit off the mark.

Metal Gear Solid, though a great game and probably better than all its sequals, really hasn't aged well. Neither has Final Fantasy 7, the game that caused a schism between RPG fans everywhere. The simple fact that both games look like crap (FF7 much more so than MGS) compared to today's games, while many 2-D games still look beautifully made. In fact, most 3-D games don't age well. A notable exception being Super Mario 64 and one or two others that escape me at the moment. No, most of the games that age well from the 90's were 2-D games, regardless of genre. It's one of the reasons I call this list out as being biased. Not always because of looks either, usually it was the gameplay and music as well.

That list is missing Super Metroid, one of the most popular games not only in the Metroid community, but in the modding community, as well. Visually it still looks good, the controls are tight, and it can stand up to other games in the series that were made recently. Link to the Past is a good choice though, because like Super Metroid and Super Mario World, it still looks breath-takingly beautiful (spriting is an overlooked art), and it's also got great controls and excellent gameplay. Plus it doesn't get boring. The best way to tell if a game has aged well for someone, is if they find themselves bored easily by it. That can be a result of length, gameplay, repetition, etc… And why aren't Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger on that list? All of those games aged well compared to their modern counterparts, so surely at least ONE should have been on there. I find it interesting that the only RPG he mentions is one of the ones that looked severely dated by the time its sequel came out a year or two later.

And yes, I'm saying that Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask didn't really age well. They're both great games, but some of the later gameplay mechanics (such as a movable camera) are sorely missed, and much like Metroid Prime 2, MM suffered from being "too damn hard" for many of the fans to ever finish.

well, in my opinion, ocarina fo time aged well, it still have that charm and the z-targeting system is simply brilliant, alongside with many more stuff, the camera is not a problem, i prefer ir because is not very annoying (like some recent games with movable camera) and it still an amazing game

Worthless list. There shouldn't be a single 3D game on it. I would go as far as to say that FF7 is the poster child for games that haven't aged well. Its graphics are so utterly, abysmally ugly that quite often it's difficult to tell what something is even supposed to be, and the rendered cut scenes are hardly any better. 2D games from that era look much better now – many SNES games still look attractive, but back then people would wet their pants over the most laughably primitive 3D. Now that its graphics look so primitive, it's easy to see that FF7 wasn't really anything more special than FF6 or Chrono Trigger.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

All of those names seem sort of random aside from “A Child’s Thought of Love”- which isn’t bad. How about- Youth’s Method to Partay, haha. In the event you wanted something random then Yellow Polka Dotted Sneakers seems pretty cool.
