Legend of Zelda: Enemy Redemptions

Noah over at The Hidden Triforce has put together a short article discussing several enemies of the Zelda series that have since been lost over the years. In particular he looks at five enemies that once played a more vital role, but are now just another enemy in the grouping.

Where has Goriya even gone? This ugly but ever so lovable enemy has not been seen since A Link to the Past. Goriya got his start as a Boomerang throwing foe in The Legend of Zelda and repeated this performance for The Adventure of Link. Goriya even made several appearances in the notoriously good Legend of Zelda cartoons. InA Link to the Past he was weakened and made to just mimic Link’s moves. Bring Goriya back. Zelda Wii could use a Boomerang touting enemy.

I personally would like to see the Lynel’s from the original Legend of Zelda make a return. We saw them in A Link to the Past, Oracle of Seasons, and Oracle of Ages, but they have since disappeared. I always thought that they were some of the more challenging overworld enemies and it is a shame that such a cool looking and difficult enemy has disappeared.

So what enemies out there do you think should return to the Zelda series? What older enemies do you think should play a more vital role in the games? Post your comments below!

  • To be perfectly honest, the only major Zelda enemies that I haven't seen in a long time are Goriya and Lynel. And while I'd like to see a return of them, sure, what I'd really like to see again are a couple of not-as-common foes. I'd like to see Gleeok come back, for in stance. Also, since this is called "Enemy Redemptions" I would like to point out that Zola/Zora (I do believe they're the same) have greatly changed since the series began. I'd actually kind of like to see evil Zoras again. Hell, they could make it a subplot or something about the Zora's splitting into two factions, or maybe they could FINALLY explain why the hell Zoras are so nice in the "early" games (timeline-wise) and yet they're enemies in the "later" games like LoZ and LttP. For that matter, I'd like to see some Goron enemies. I always wanted to know where Nintendo got those guys from and if they eventually become enemies or something.

    Just some random thoughts.

    • hextupleyoodot says:

The timeline has nothing to do with the evolution of creature design. In reality, the early zora's are the evil ones, and the division between river zoras and sea zoras is more recent. Also, we've already seen the return of River Zoras. Haven't you played the DS titles?

      • I think you clearly missed my point about the timeline. We've been told time and again that Ocarina of Time was supposed to be the "first" in the Zelda timeline; the beginning of everything, if you will. That means the Zoras did indeed start off as genuinely friendly creatures and not the fireball spitting ones we see in the first few games. Likewise I have indeed played the DS titles, and I don't think that has anything to really do with my questions about the Zoras who don't make a lot of appearences in the Wind Waker series, other than some vague hinting that they had something to do with the bird people (whose name I forgot off hand). More over, I wasn't talking about creature "design", either. And as for the Gorons, the Goron miniboss in Twilight Princess was pretty original and I thought it was a very nicely done battle. I'd like to see more done with them besides being generic mountain dwellers. Truth be told, I was surprised to see them showing up more in the WW series because you'd think Hyrule flooding would have been a big deal for them… now there's a random thought, something that goes into what happened between Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker… eh, people'd probably hate it or bat it down…

        Sorry, getting off subject.

    • Ember Incubus says:

I think the should have a subplot were, the zora tribe split into three do to the great flood or something. As result, the tribe was split in two and one side only had a river and a forest so part of tht trbe went and became Zola/River Zora enemy were as, the other half of that side became a Tiro, you know those bird people from the DS Zeldas. So as result there is 3 tribes: Sea Zora(Good guys lik in TP and N64 Zeldas), River Zora(Bad Zora from tloz and tloz:ALttP), and Tiro (Eveolved orm of zoras from WW, PH, & ST).

Vaati in 3D would be pretty awesome.. I'd like to see Agahnim make a comeback too. They count as major role characters though I guess..

  • greg says:

honesly i really want them to have gannondorf and gleeok he was fun. and a new enemy that can consume other enemies and take their power tha would be so crapin awsome

    • Joe R says:

Lol yeah enemies that go kirby on you! So if you were holding boomerang they get aquire that and if you were holding sword or arrows they aquire that too and can use all 3 of these things whenever it wants till it die! The more you switch items the bigger arsenal it gains.

  • Leon says:

I would like the Lynel to make a return, maybe as a mid boss type in a dungeon as they are always tough for me to take down.

At least, see one of these enemies make a comeback as its pretty slim seeing them again

The Hidden Triforce sucks, so I won't waste my time reading the article. :)

  • Zelda FAAAAN!!! says:

I've been on hidden Triforce before and it sucks! They talk about random things about Zelda that not much people care about. I wouldn't bother reading it.

  • And why does my site suck? Just curious to hear. I would love some real feedback.

And thanks Mases for the article post

  • MelonPiranha says:

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: WTF happened to Deku Scrubs?! All we got now are Deku babas!

  • blue2red1kat says:

I got LEDGEND OF ZELDA AND THE PHANTOM HOURGLASS for GAME this morning and i have benn playing my DS lots! If those who have the game, how tricky is the first timed dungeon? It seems pretty tricky.

  • Randomkid says:

For a new game idea for DS only, have the transportation vehicle be an old fashion airplane, kind of like the boat and train in spirit tracks and phantom hourglass.

  • Randomkid says:

They should put bosses like Barinade, Ganondorf, and volvagia in a ds game

  • Reyh says:

An enemy I'd like to see in the new Zelda Wii, would probably be Rope(s). Give them the same girth, if not a little smaller. And make them 15-20 ft long. And make them cobra like. Make then highly evasive, but quick attackers. I think that would be quite the interesting foe to face.

  • frog says:

    3-d Gleerok anyone?

  • thombre says:

concur with random kid. i think its high time they step up the portable game environment a bit too. Im a nintendo fan, always have been since 1985 with my wacky robot. but the other systems are leaving nintendo in their dust with much higher end graphics, larger worlds, and more sophisticated game play on both consoles and handhelds alike.

    • Jay says:

What I see in the other console's games are just good looking graphics. Some of them have no story whatsoever and are there for the sole purpose of online multi-player. I for one stick with Nintendo because when it comes to their franchises, IE: Mario and Zelda, they always have a good story and good gameplay. Well Mario may be lacking in story but it is 99% of the time, a good play through.

      • Joe R says:

I completely agree with you. As AVGN and myself always say: Better graphics do not make a better game. It's true take mw2. It has amazing graphics, but basically no story. Zelda does not have the best graphics, but in TP they weren't horrible. They still were appealing. If mw2 didn't have graphics, the people that are wet for them would and any xbox shooter fan in general would abandon it. This is because all you have left is online shooter with normal graphics and no story. Zelda is a much more complete experience. Wake up Xbox! Graphics aren't everything!

    hi

  • ajsdvqeub says:

i do would love to see a 3-D lynel, and also a super kind of final boss (like vaati with majoras mask on) well, not exactly like that, just saying

    • Andrew says:

How about Ganondorf, with Majora's Mask, Bellum attached,( like with Linebeck ) and Malladus's demon in them. ( like with Cole ) Now that would be a boss!

  • konoha4dawin says:

I'd like to see more bots
and more octorock (even though are heaps)
    better octarocks

  • Link8150 says:

I would like to see land octorocks in a 3D Zelda game and also like a few people have said I think it would be cool to have a 3D Gleeock.

  • Joe R says:

I do agree that we need a challenge in the overworld. Bulbins are too easy and some enemy's are too annoying. We need an enemy that may take a little strategy to avoid taking loads of damage, but something that is fun to destroy. Helmosaurs from TP are a perfect example of what to NOT add. You need to painfully aim the hookshot, shoot it, swing the sword once and their dead. They aren't worth attacking. Don't add Leevers because they aren't worth attacking either. Any enemy that we usually run by should not be an enemy. We need to enjoy the enemies in our overworld. So make them much more difficult Nintendo. Refer to my earlier responses for more of my insights.

i would like to see a much harder version of dark link from oot

  • zelda fanatic says:

    BRING BACK THE DEKU SCRUBS!!!!!!!!!

  • ajsdvqeub says:

YEAH!! DEKU SCRUBS AND LYNELS, even if nintendo won't read this and it's useless to say this stuff, I just felt like saying it

  • J-Dog says:

    LYNELS AND IRON KNUCKLES!!!

  • Andrew says:

Link should be Nintendo's icon, not Mario!

  • Andrew says:

They should Bring back the multi headed dragon boss from the first game.

  • Zelda68 says:

I think that we should see the "Dead Hand" again – it looked so creepy at the time, and it would look even scarier in better graphics.

  • Elemental13th says:

Hehehe Well as far as link enemies go i prefer the dead hands and stalchilds expesially in MM when you can TALK to them i like the idea o the masks BRING THEM BACK

  • a baker' dozen idea says:

Enemies that should have been in twilight princess and that should be in the new zelda coming 2010. First off, bring back some decent dodongos! i want to stuff some lizards full of explosives again, i miss that. And the iron knuckle, completely different from the darknut. sure they both have armor, but the knuckle uses an axe and moves with a stiff upper posture while the darknut moves in a slightly crouched battle ready pose. and i love the idea of the boomerang wielding enemy coming back, the goriya, it seems like it would prove a formidable enemy.

  • a baker' dozen idea says:

but you know what else is formidable? the LYNEL, the one with the sword. now that would be the best, especially with graphics like twilight princess. a new version of the like-like would probably look pretty creepy, but it would be nice to have them back. the leevers ere dissapointing in TP, they only came in little packs ith the "occasional" big ones. in OoT they frickin' swarmed you. plus it would have been nice to have some agressive peahats, not all of them had to be pacifists. and there were virtually no octoroks in twilight princess! there should have at least been some on land and in water, with a new squiddy look going on.

  • a baker' dozen idea says:

and the gohmas, my god the gohmas! none at all, PERIOD! except for that one in the temple of time, and that battle was dissapointing, it was just some damn spider with an eye on its abdomen. there was no contact with the spider itself and proved very unexciting. speaking of spiders, barely any skulltulas showed up, and they never appeared up on nearby webs, nor did they wrap you up in them. but the icing on the cake, the one guy id like to show up is Dark Link. From OoT, best battle ever.

  • a baker' dozen idea says:

Anyway, some other guys that should make appearances: bubbles, ghinis, moldorms, ropes, wallmasters, wizzrobes, patra, aquamentus, gleeok, hinox, mimic, facade, deku scrubs, wolfos, and volvagi-like dragons. Just throwin' em out there! Goodbye. ;{D And if you have a valid argument or opinion , let the world hear it! if not, then SIT DOWN.
